Disney Predict $190 Million Loss On THE LONE RANGER; Tease More Unexpected Marvel Movies

Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp may blame critics for the commercial failure of The Lone Ranger, but Disney now look set to lose as much as $190 million on the big budget flop. Regardless, the studio believes that they have only reached "the tip of the iceberg" when it comes to Marvel movies!

During a conference call to discuss their third quarter fiscal earnings, Disney revealed that they expect to lose between $160 - 190 million due to the dismal box office performance of The Lone Ranger. The film cost over $215 million to produce and has so far earned only $176 million worldwide. However, Bob Iger cited Iron Man 3 as one of their big budget tentpoles which managed to succeed this year after it grossed over $1.2 billion, adding that "We think ‘The Avengers’ helped 'Iron Man 3'." They also believe that owning Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm will ensure that their upcoming releases help them stand out in what looks set to be another two crowded years at the box office. However, when it comes to Marvel, Iger claimed that the company has only reached "the tip of the iceberg" when it comes to their comic book adaptations, highlighting Guardians of the Galaxy as a movie which will introduce a lot of new characters to moviegoers. As the studio hold the rights to everyone from Black Panther to Daredevil and Doctor Strange, expect a lot more to come from them over the next few...decades?

Haha coming from Disney.

marvel need guardians of the galaxy to gross about $500,000,000,so we get a sequel & that they expand their cosmic characters.

-nova
-the inhumans
-captain mar-vell

fox let marvel studios hire/rent the silver surfer & galactus from you so they can use him for expanding their cosmic side of things.
SnapperCarr - 8/6/2013, 5:24 PM
I wonder what Marvel has in store.
avengers72 - 8/6/2013, 5:24 PM
daredevil is my favorite superhero... But I don't want him in the MCU.
Superman007 - 8/6/2013, 5:26 PM
Lone Ranger cost 215 million . It made 176 million right now and they will still lose 190 million? so to break even it would need to make aroung 400 million? thats crazy.

It has to earn back twice the production costs to break even... lol
avengers72 - 8/6/2013, 5:27 PM
I want Iron Fist, Inhumans, Captain/Ms. Marvel, pretty much al the cosmic myths, Black Panther, and maybe Blade. Though for blade I think he deserves a rated R take.
Talontd - 8/6/2013, 5:29 PM

GOTG is gonna make ALOT of money. Another superhero comic book movie involving a team and a wide cast galent with "From The Studio That Brought You MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS" is gonna raise its awareness at putting butts in the theaters. And with a good WOM, it just might cross the billion dollar mark.
TheWolverine08 - 8/6/2013, 5:35 PM
Lol, at The Lone Ranger.
Reasonnnn - 8/6/2013, 5:36 PM
Cmon Black Panther/Doctor Strange/Inhumans
Tainted87 - 8/6/2013, 5:38 PM
The Lone Ranger wasn't a bad movie. There are two factors that SUNK it.

Critics, and its length. If it wasn't for the critics, it probably would have made its budget back, but at the same time, it draaaaaaaaaaagged on.
MitchConner - 8/6/2013, 5:38 PM
Disney Shitz $190 mil...I own their stock, not worries at all. They are going to kill it for the next decade, they've set themselves up very nicely
TheWolverine08 - 8/6/2013, 5:38 PM
I want Iron Fist, Black Panther, and Daredevil movies.
MrCBM56 - 8/6/2013, 5:39 PM
I want Inhumans, Black Panther and Doc. Strange.
Reasonnnn - 8/6/2013, 5:40 PM
@Tainted87 Yes, because critics stopped Grown Ups 2. No "Western" should cost $200+ mil let alone 100 mil
McNyagano - 8/6/2013, 5:40 PM

Yet you clicked on the article...

CrimsonFlash - 8/6/2013, 5:45 PM
When studios ask them selves in the future " is 215 million too much for a western" they'll now know the answer.
Tainted87 - 8/6/2013, 5:45 PM
@Reasonnnn
Did I say otherwise?
CrimsonFlash - 8/6/2013, 5:46 PM
Please Give me a DD movie
ABLEE337 - 8/6/2013, 5:46 PM
They should get someone like Gareth Evans to direct an Iron Fist movie. I'd pay money to see that.
TheWolverine08 - 8/6/2013, 5:46 PM
@Darkking DOPE GIfs bro!
TonyChu - 8/6/2013, 5:46 PM
LMAO! Marvel to the [frick]ing rescue for Disney. Them buying Marvel and Star Wars was a great decision by Disney because those franchises will definetly bring in money.
marvel72 - 8/6/2013, 5:47 PM

-captain mar-vell

TheSisko - 8/6/2013, 5:47 PM
Daredevil needs a tv show, and yes it could on abc. I could see it as a 10pm show and get ratings similar to Scandal. ABC is the best broadcaster for 10pm shows.
MrCBM56 - 8/6/2013, 5:47 PM
Levi

Lol, I'm just busting your balls.

MercSoul - 8/6/2013, 5:47 PM
Bring This

92Marvel - 8/6/2013, 5:50 PM
I can't wait for the upcoming marvel movie.

I don't care what marvel does next just keep these epic movie coming!
Reasonnnn - 8/6/2013, 5:51 PM
@Tainted87

Putting any blame on the critics is just ridiculous. A lot of critics like Pacific Rim and it underperformed just as well.
marvel72 - 8/6/2013, 5:51 PM
@ blackandyellow

"Iron Fist should be the next character introduced. Forget expanding the cosmic shit."

have you read any of marvel's "cosmic shit",its blinding some of the best stuff coming from marvel is cosmic.
eisfresh - 8/6/2013, 5:54 PM
We will never get an R-Rated marvel movie with Disney calling the shots. The other problem I have is the over saturation of the characters. Disney is going pump TV shows that we don't need and water down the comics that we love. They see marvel as nothing but an ATM and we will never get the movies we as comicbook fans need or want
Reasonnnn - 8/6/2013, 5:55 PM
@DarkKing I wouldn't be surprised if this is the role that Vin Diesel is attached to.
maryboo - 8/6/2013, 5:55 PM
How did the hell did this piece of crap even cost that much money to make?

Did they pay Depp 80% of the budget?
Grabthemcakes - 8/6/2013, 5:56 PM
Hope I'm wrong but don't think GOTG is going to be close to a hit.
