While Benedict Cumberbatch has said numerous times that he would like a role in Disney's new Star Wars trilogy, his involvement with the J.J. Abrams helmed Episode VII has been little more than fan speculation up until this point. Well, we've been hearing word of a major casting announcement being on the way all week, and now Film Chronicles believe they know who that is. "There’s a lot of gossip swirling around that Lucasfilm are about to make a big casting announcement regarding Star Wars VII, and that casting announcement appears to be none-other than Benedict Cumberbatch, most recently seen in director JJ Abrams’ previous movie, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’." While they don't name any sort of source, the site definitely seem confident that the Sherlock star is in the movie. After all, he did mysteriously drop out of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak recently. However, the timing of the report - the same day as Star Trek Into Darkness is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK - seems a little coincidental, so take it with a pinch of salt for the time being! What do you guys think? Sound off below!

I would love for this to happen, but this is bs.
ballstothewall - 9/2/2013, 7:29 AM
What the [frick]? It's awesome, but why? Why a dude from a Trek movie? I don't like this.
DaenerysTargaryen - 9/2/2013, 7:30 AM
This better be true *begins having CumberAttack*
ndwwrestler2 - 9/2/2013, 7:31 AM
The dude would make an awesome Sith.

Waiting for people to complain about someone being in Star Trek AND Star Wars in 3...2...1...
ndwwrestler2 - 9/2/2013, 7:33 AM
Oh look at that...It started even before the countdown.
ndwwrestler2 - 9/2/2013, 7:37 AM
@Soto Yeah, I get where your coming from. But you have to admit, he looks more like a Sith than anything.
TheAbaryMan369 - 9/2/2013, 7:42 AM
He's going to be a Rodian. I'm [frick]ing calling it now. Then you can look back and see that I called it. He's gonna be a Rodian. Just. Watch...................
Greengo - 9/2/2013, 7:42 AM
Benedict is the man!
bythepowercosmic - 9/2/2013, 7:44 AM
Well if its true at least they won't have to use and special FX on him. Dude already looks like an alien.
ezio619 - 9/2/2013, 7:44 AM
benedict cumberbatch is the man, imagine him as a sith lord
thewonderer - 9/2/2013, 7:45 AM
Benedict isn't an idiot. He's played Khan and Smaug now.

Even for Star Wars, he won't do another villain.
Greengo - 9/2/2013, 7:45 AM
Karl Urban did have a good point.
titansupes - 9/2/2013, 7:46 AM
I'd have been excited about this (potential) casting if I hadn't seen him as the other big sci-fi franchise villain just a few months ago.
InfiniteMonkey - 9/2/2013, 7:47 AM
Let the crying of babies begin! LOL
*grabs popcorn and beer*
JoJo1982 - 9/2/2013, 7:48 AM
That would be great, I hope it's true

He was the best thing in Star Trek into darkness
JoeAngersIII - 9/2/2013, 7:48 AM
Sorry, but he kicked so much major ass in "Into Darkness". He would definitely make a bad ass Sith Lord.
Hellboy6666 - 9/2/2013, 7:49 AM
As long as the OT cast is back they can cast Nic Cage for all I care, just %&cking announce their return all ready!
P.S Now I want Nic Cage in Star Wars.
Omega - 9/2/2013, 7:49 AM
Benedict for Sith :D
ndwwrestler2 - 9/2/2013, 7:49 AM
Still think Sith should be the Background villains in the series, with the Mandalorians appearing as the main threat.
AvatarIII - 9/2/2013, 7:50 AM
Did he say in a STID interview that he wanted to play a lightsaber?
frova - 9/2/2013, 7:50 AM
Star Wars Into Darkness
Christuffer - 9/2/2013, 7:50 AM
Jedi or Sith, Benedict Cumberbatch will make a great addition. If he's a Jedi, he will be a Jedi like Mace Windu was a Jedi: a hardass, but wise. If he's a Sith, he will be a badass, but typecast unfortunately.

Either way, I don't care. Awesome.

@ndwwrestler2 - The Mandalorians were wiped out supposedly during the Old Republic. That would be awesome, but weird for the continuity. :(
AvatarIII - 9/2/2013, 7:52 AM
thewonderer - 9/2/2013, 7:52 AM
Make him a jedi. Subvert peoples expectations.
GetsugaTensho22 - 9/2/2013, 7:53 AM
I smell BULLSHIT. Expect this rumor to be dispelled within the coming days.
MisterNiceGuy - 9/2/2013, 7:53 AM
Oh jesus. Let the nerdgasms begin
ndwwrestler2 - 9/2/2013, 7:59 AM
@Christuffer Actually, there were still Mandalorians. If you remember the comic books with Jango Fett, and the Clone Wars, the Mandalorians did not go away.

And in the EU, they are still there.
Chucky2003 - 9/2/2013, 7:59 AM
It would be cool, make him a bad guy,his voice is great for a Sith
Lhornbk - 9/2/2013, 8:04 AM
This is a RUMOR people, calm down.
JatevinM - 9/2/2013, 8:05 AM
I would really like to see this but I would much rather have him be Martian Manhunter like I've been saying from the begining.
ndwwrestler2 - 9/2/2013, 8:06 AM
@JatevinM It isn't like he's doing a Comic-Book based Super Hero role, Martian Manhunter can still happen.
l0rdleg0las - 9/2/2013, 8:07 AM
As awesome as this would be, I would rather the actors remain separate from each franchise. I'd much rather see a return of Khan than see him in Star Wars.
CrimsonFlash - 9/2/2013, 8:07 AM
Hope this is true and i hope he is the main hero!
gambgel - 9/2/2013, 8:07 AM
mmm, dont like the idea of actors from one franchise crossing over to a similar one.

It breaks the magic somehow

MrCBM56 - 9/2/2013, 8:16 AM
[frick] YEAH! He killed it in STID.
certofex - 9/2/2013, 8:17 AM
Excited if true. I wont build my hopes up just yet. I was disappointed he dropped out of Crimson Peak as I want him to work long term with Guillermo Del Toro and play Constantine in his Justice league dark.

THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/2/2013, 8:17 AM
Abrams pulling a Nolan?
Wingding - 9/2/2013, 8:20 AM
This is probably bull, but if it IS true then...Holy hell that'd be awesome. I would love to see him as Jacen Solo. My goodness that would be epic! He would be a great Jedi and Sith
Mrsinister - 9/2/2013, 8:21 AM
^ great idea!! He'd be an awesome brainiac!
blockridge1977 - 9/2/2013, 8:25 AM
I'm for the casting in any role... Just don't miscast him like they miscast Samuel L. Jackson as a Jedi. He should have been a space pirate or something in his skill set. I also hope there is a scene in the movie where the villain gets captured only to find out later that was part of his whole brilliant plan and then The Joker....er.... I mean Kahn....oops, I mean the sith lord escapes and brings more chaos!
