EDITORIAL: THE AVEN-Who?! Why A JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie WILL Outshine Earth's Mightiest

The Avengers impressed fans and critics alike, earning a whopping $1.5 billion at the box office. Does a Justice League movie REALLY have a chance of reaching - or even surpassing - that sort of success? Hell yes. Read on for my thoughts on the huge potential of a movie starring DC's most iconic superheroes!

I’ve always been a Marvel guy. The only reason I find it necessary to point that out is because it's inevitable that there will be accusations of bias; after all, for some fans, it’s impossible not to favour one company over the other. In truth, that’s how it was for me for a very long time. DC’s characters simply did not appeal to me. I can relate to an everyman like Peter Parker or a flawed hero like Daredevil. The near indestructible Superman or billionaire Batman however? Not so much. However, “The New 52” (which I fully appreciate was far from popular with some long-time fans) reinvigorated my interest in DC’s stable of superheroes, particularly the Justice League.

The thought of seeing that roster of superheroes together on the big screen – Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Green Lantern and The Flash – is to me, undeniably an even more exciting and appealing thought than the spectacle that was Marvel’s The Avengers. I mean, The Avengers was one hell of a movie. Joss Whedon quickly brought together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and after a thrilling set of sequences aboard the Helicarrier, we were treated to an epic battle in New York City. It’s a movie full of unforgettable moments and a goddamn masterpiece in my eyes. I am not for a second taking anything away from Marvel’s extremely successful superhero ensemble. However, I truly believe that a Justice League movie has the potential to easily blow The Avengers out of the water. I also believe that it could surpass the Marvel Studios movie in terms of box office success too; don't be surprised to see Batman/Superman perform better than expected in 2015 for a start...

Anyway, as cool as it was to see Captain America fighting alongside Iron Man, Thor and Hulk (and as great as it will be to introduce Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to that roster in The Avengers: Age of Ultron), even a “Marvel guy” like me finds the prospect of seeing Batman and Superman leading a team like the one mentioned above to be way more exciting. We will of course get our first glimpse of such a team-up in 2015’s Batman/Superman, but are Zack Snyder and David Goyer the right men to bring the superhero team to the big screen? While I could certainly get behind Snyder being in the director’s chair, I think it would be a mistake for Goyer to be solely responsible for the screenplay. For me, Man of Steel wasn’t the movie it could and should have been because of just that. If anything, I believe that it would be for the best if Ben Affleck were to take the helm, but regardless of who ends up directing, it’s vital that they get the story right.

The problem DC has of course is that unlike Marvel, they don’t have an already established series of solo films which will have introduced the various members of the Justice League. While many see this as a disadvantage, I believe it could be for the best. A big chunk of The Avengers was devoted to bringing the team discover and showing what they were all up to. While Whedon handled these scenes well, they undeniably make the movie drag a little on repeat viewings. All the Justice League movie has to do is follow the formula of the comic book series of the same name in “The New 52”. With Batman and Superman already established, simply introduce the rest of the team – who will be as new to those two as they are to the audience - as the movie (and perhaps the battle against Darkseid, who definitely seems like the best choice of villain for the movie) progresses. Just have a read of that first arc, and even if the planned big screen adaptation has nothing else in common with it, the way the likes of Wonder Woman and Aquaman are introduced would work perfectly in the movie. It would of course also mean that those heroes could then have their own solo outings AFTER they’ve been introduced to the regular moviegoer, perhaps meaning that Warner Bros. would feel more confident in moving forward with more DC adaptations.

So, as controversial a statement as it may be, I truly do believe that a Justice League movie would have absolutely no problem in decimating The Avengers. Sure, there’s room for both to exist – what kind of comic book fan wouldn’t want to see both of these franchises in theatres at the same time? – but for me, DC’s superhero ensemble has all the right ingredients to be better than anything Marvel produces. There does always have to be a winner after all. Captain America and Iron Man are all very well and good, but does that really have the same appeal as The Flash racing Superman or Green Lantern decking Batman? Not for me. It was mindblowing seeing Thor and Hulk doing battle, but a recreation of that kiss between Superman and Wonder Woman somehow seems even more worthy of a geek out moment! The thing is, as relatable as Marvel’s superheroes are, there’s arguably something more iconic about DC’s stable; the fact that the Superman logo is the second most recognisable symbol in the world says it all really.

What do you guys think?

TheWolverine08 - 9/4/2013, 11:06 AM
Are you saying that a well done DC movie will be automatically better than a Marvel movie?
NitPicker - 9/4/2013, 11:06 AM
...So anyway, the last episode of Futurama is coming up. Somebody start a petition to get it back on the air.
JoeMomma29 - 9/4/2013, 11:07 AM
Though Gusto likes Flame wars he will even dress up for the occasion.

JoeMomma29 - 9/4/2013, 11:09 AM
I agree that a JL movie would rock and should do better than the Avengers etc... but it will never happen because WB has full control over DC and they are a bunch of morons over there.

Hey at least DC rules in comics, video games, and live action T.V..

I hate you WB!!!!!!1
TheBaroness89 - 9/4/2013, 11:11 AM
as Johnny Storm likes to say
FLAME ON!
JoeMomma29 - 9/4/2013, 11:15 AM
It will not happen until DC gets their own studio like Marvel did, that is the key. Us DC fans will continue to get one or two movies every other year.
thejoshl - 9/4/2013, 11:16 AM
Bring Jonathan Nolan back to do the story. Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight. All Nolan's best films were either written by Jonathan entirely, or had him on to come up with the concept.
Tevii - 9/4/2013, 11:16 AM
Im more of a DC guy, I like the characters and love how they are more FANTASTIC (powers wise).... that being said, I doubt JLA could beat Avengers.

Not because it couldnt, but you HAVE to take into account the companies behind them. WB has screwed up non-stop. And they dont show any signs of stopping.

i thought they were with MoS. But the sequel is already pushing too hard, the appearance of Batman is too early, having an older batman makes no sense, Ben Affleck, I like a lot as an actor, but is not necessary. (Didnt they learn you dont need a big COSTLY name to have success with cavill... and learn the cost of failure with Reynolds GL?) and now its become a Batman movie with Superman in it rather than Superman Part II.

They want to cling to a Nolan ideal that doesnt work in the DCU overall. Worked great with Batman, and cannot work with the others.

Avengers explores the characters, is more true to the source and Marvel has for the most part not disappoiinted. WB has disappointed on every turn.

JLA COULD beat Avengers, but WONT beat Avengers
didich - 9/4/2013, 11:17 AM
There's only one intelligent answer to this editorial: lol no.
Omarvls - 9/4/2013, 11:17 AM
The ONLY reason this editorial exists is because there already has been an Avengers film
If it was the other way around I'm sure you would write this

"Yeah seeing Superman race Flash is cool and all but can you imagine seeing Thor duck it out with the Hulk or Captain America, Balck Widow and Hawkeye on a 3 way battle against Hydra"

So Avengers/Justice League is all the same
JoJo1982 - 9/4/2013, 11:18 AM
Oh Noo..... "The war has begun" -- Magneto in X2
charlie2094 - 9/4/2013, 11:18 AM
Whilst I do think a Justice League is more exciting, what with icons like Superman, Batman and my favourite DC character THE Green Lantern (Hal Jordan btw ;) ) I'm still a Marvel guy and don't at the moment believe DC could deliver a great Justice League. That said, Batman/Superman alone should challenge Avengers, so if they were to at least introduce Flash as well, think Justice League could do huge when and if, it actually releases...

Justice League would not come close to Avengers as it stands, unless they very much marketed it as a Batman/Superman film...which we're getting.

What's with all these editorials recently? I miss something?
kinghulk - 9/4/2013, 11:18 AM
avengers win simple as
TheWolverine08 - 9/4/2013, 11:18 AM
@MAC Captain America is relatable.
didich - 9/4/2013, 11:20 AM
Also, this editorial is flawless flame-war fuel. Congratulations.
Dunejedi - 9/4/2013, 11:20 AM
@ Joemomma Don't forget about animated films. They're killing it over there.

Justice League COULD do better, but there's a whole lot riding on it.
StarkAnthony - 9/4/2013, 11:20 AM
"I used to like Marvel, I'm not biased."
"DC's heroes are more exciting than Marvel's." that was the basic idea of this post.
SageMode - 9/4/2013, 11:20 AM
If Snyder directs this, its gonna suck. PnS
JoeMomma29 - 9/4/2013, 11:20 AM
@ Charlie

There is a contest to win $500 bucks, the amount of time some of these people are writing these editorials and stories they can make the $500 by giving Gusto sponge baths in a week.

didich - 9/4/2013, 11:21 AM
@beto

Nowdays I'm not sure WW is more famours/appealing than Thor. Same with Hulk and Flash.
Greengo - 9/4/2013, 11:21 AM
LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BlackHulk - 9/4/2013, 11:22 AM
Marvel would have had a decisive win if they had Antman and Wasp instead of Hawkeye and Black Widow in the Avengers. But a good Justice League movie with its core members will break Avatar records.
TheWolverine08 - 9/4/2013, 11:22 AM
@beto All your hero comparisons don't make any sense.
RorMachine - 9/4/2013, 11:23 AM
Potential is there of course, but the only way we can make make a real prediction on whether it'll match up or surpass The Avengers is when we have a director, writer and a cast. In other words as much as I love most of the JL characters, they have a LOT to live up to with Whedon and co.
spidey23435 - 9/4/2013, 11:24 AM
So you say the benifit of not having the solo films is that they then don't have to take time out of the screenplay to explain how they come together? that makes no sense at all do these characters just appear out of thin air. You would have to take the same time to intro who the characters are and why they are helping. I'm not saying you have to use the same route of the individual movies but to say it will save screen time is just a silly notion. Secondly you just state that you believe it will decimate the Avengers yet offer no real reason other than that is your opinion. Avengers grossed over a billion dollars and is the 2nd highest grossing Blu Ray 2nd to Avatar. Now I am not saying because it sold well it is the best movie ever made but I am saying it set all new records, which would be hard for a JL movie to do considering it will have to compete with an Avengers movie. So to not only would it have to top that but then "decimate" it as well not likely. Regardless this boils down to the fact you have an opinion of why it will be better but have 0 facts or really provide any information other than you think A guy running fast next to superman, or a guy with a power ring punching Batman or supes and Wonderwoman kissing would be any better then Thor and Hulk fighting, Cap and Thors showdown, or Iron man and Thors. In my opinion I would prefer these but thats just it, its only an opinion and you know that they say about those.
JoeMomma29 - 9/4/2013, 11:24 AM
@ BlackHulk

I agree with you, most non fans of comic books will recognize Supes, Batman, WW, Aquaman, and Flash. Those characters are iconic and will draw in crowds if you put them on the big screen together, but I have no faith in WB to actually pull it off.
Dumegg - 9/4/2013, 11:24 AM
So... A kiss between Superman and Wonder Woman
Is more exciting to you than Thor vs Hulk?
Um...ok.
gambgel - 9/4/2013, 11:25 AM
Justice League has huge potential, thats for sure.

Im getting really hyped about it, and Im a xmen fan, but JL is a monster
JoJo1982 - 9/4/2013, 11:25 AM
It's a chance that justice league can be better than avengers if done right.
But can justice league make more money then Avengers, probably not seeing as Avengers did something no other movie done(team-up) and if just justice league does it ppl will be saying its a avengers rip off.
Spidey91 - 9/4/2013, 11:26 AM
yeah.........no
Tevii - 9/4/2013, 11:26 AM
RorMachine - actually not even then, WB execs tend to dictate to their directors where they want it to go. Which is a HUGE problem since they are visionless suits.

So not only do we have to wait to see who writes and directs, we have to hope WB execs let the director/writer do what they envision

"I just.. I mean...

Sigh, shit editorial. Why does people have to be disrespect in editorial, I'll never known. Yea I say shit about TASM in comments but I would never write an editorial bashing the film.

I mean just why the dumb shit nonsense? A section meant for intelligence is a cash grab."

Yet again in total agreement with Levi.

"While Whedon handled these scenes well, they undeniably make the movie drag a little on repeat viewings."

1.5 billion says it ain't so 'undeniable' as you suggest.
NovaCorpsFan - 9/4/2013, 11:28 AM
A Red Dwarf movie would surpass a JLA film... (he said with a naughty chuckle).
SoundWave - 9/4/2013, 11:28 AM
Solo films, small cross-overs before and UNITE tv-series "Arrow" and "Flash" with MovieVerce of "Man of Steel", "Batman/Superman" (and possibly "Green Lantern" if they really plan use Mark Strong's Thaal Sinestro in future movies). Amell-Arrow must be in JL! Flash must have among 2 tv seasons before solo movie in 2016. "Amazon" must be launch as origin/prequel story for Wonder-Woman and she must appear cameos in MovieVerse. More easter eggs in each movie about general universe of Batman, Flash, Superman, Green Arrow and etc.

They could make like MoS and GL was parallel, and 5 seasons of "Arrow" was BEFORE MoS/GL movies about aliens. Or 2-3 seasons before and 4-5 after or at the same time.

It must be BIG live action universe unite Movies and TV-series. Only this way is totaly 100% right.
Greengo - 9/4/2013, 11:28 AM
I never looked at the various character's introduction that way (I obviously don't keep up with the New 52) but it sounds like it would work to me.

Marvel is kind of blazing the trail with the CBM's and although their formula works so far, it's not the end all be all strategy to have a successful team up film.

TheWolverine08 - 9/4/2013, 11:28 AM
@MAC I do find Cap relatable. He was a scrawny dude who didn't have it easy in life and wasn't was blessed with nothing. He went by his convictions to be helpful to people, refused to give up, and succeeded. The guy is inspirational and relatable.
didich - 9/4/2013, 11:30 AM
You forget the GA, if a JL movie comes out, will think it's an Avengers rip-off.
TheWolverine08 - 9/4/2013, 11:31 AM
@Levi True, true. I've seen a lot of military guys who love Cap.
didich - 9/4/2013, 11:32 AM
@beto

You don't know that. WW and Flash don't have movies so we don't know how well liked would they be.

GL was a popular character with a popular comic-book run when his movie came out and was a BO bomb.
