"Obviously in the books, there's an element of goodie-goodie that we like. Doc Savage was the basis essentially for Superman because his name is Clark and he has a Fortress of Solitude, and oh, Superman has the same thing...that's odd! But that kind of perfect hero who never makes mistakes is great to a point, and the type of adventure and pulp it represents is so imitated; Raiders of the Lost Ark is essentially a child of Doc Savage.

We needed something more cerebral. We've kept it in the 30s. We've beefed up the rationale behind what it would take to be the perfect person and to be trained as such from childhood and how that would scar someone and what it would take to be a parent who is capable of inflicting that on a kid. But beyond that, we're also trying to be true to the series. Give him the helper, while also reinvigorating it and introducing a whole new brand of people to this is a challenge because it's been around for 75 years.

I've read all of them. I love them. I read my first one 45 years ago. I love Doc Savage and hope everyone comes to see it.

Here's the problem. They kind of gotta be tall. He's the perfect physical specimen and when people look at him, they're overawed by the sort of symmetry and perfection he exudes. I don't know that you could use like a James McAvoy as Doc Savage. You couldn't do it. He's a fine actor, but we need someone big. Back in the day Schwarzenegger was talked about to play Doc Savage. I don't know yet; who do you think? [Chris Hemsworth?] That's not a bad idea! You need someone magnetic and someone a little but off because that's the fun of the character. He's been secluded from people and kept from any social niceties for so long that he's become a savant."

I feel a disturbance. Something is telling me that this is John Carter all over again.
Kingdork - 9/17/2013, 3:23 AM
Waiting for the IM3 haters to come in ^^
GetsugaTensho22 - 9/17/2013, 3:30 AM
^^ OF COURSE you are. Because unless they come in, how else are you going to show off how cool you are, by going against the popular opinion (i.e. that Iron Man 3 was horrible) and prove just how much better than everybody you are?
sanyaya - 9/17/2013, 3:31 AM
Hmmm interesting I've heard of Doc savage but never read any comics of him interesting character
SnapperCarr - 9/17/2013, 3:32 AM

They must worship Helios the god of Melanoma.

Doc Savage was kind of the unofficial inspiration for Superman in much the same way that The Shadow inspired the creators of Batman.
marvel72 - 9/17/2013, 5:33 AM
hate to say it but i think the rock could play him well.
JediPhilosopher - 9/17/2013, 5:37 AM
I remember I used to ask my Grandpa if he liked the Superman movies (at that time there were only the Donner films) and he'd first say he prefered the old tv show (lol I watched it when I was little, but that was pretty goofy), but then he'd keep bringing up that he grew up reading Doc Savage. I never knew who that was. The internet came along, and years passed, and I finally looked it up probably in 2009. I didn't know they were still making anything based on these old characters. But the characters sound cool. A modern day interpretation of them could be good, or even going back to the time of their origin.
GodzillaKart - 9/17/2013, 5:38 AM
Done right, this could be really good. Big risk though.
Dedpool - 9/17/2013, 5:39 AM
They want a Man of bronze, i say use the Rock!!!! And if not then put a bad wig on Vin Diesel lol
SoundWave - 9/17/2013, 5:47 AM
Hm... With Chris Hemsworth in main role I'll watch it even if Shane Black is a director. Chris is awesome!
TheMexicanSuperman - 9/17/2013, 5:53 AM
As long as Shane Black doesn't direct the Death Note adaptation, I'm good.
KrazyForKomix - 9/17/2013, 6:10 AM
Joe Manganiello, Kevin Durand, or Daniel Cudmore are distinct possibilities.

I read Doc Savage as a kid and the author, Lester Dent, was born and raised about ten miles from my hometown. I remember watching Raiders of the Lost Ark and thinking, this is more or less Doc Savage!!

Anyways, I'm actually really looking forward to this and Chris Hemsworth would be a great choice!
devil - 9/17/2013, 6:46 AM
is this going to be apart off the dccu
StrangerX - 9/17/2013, 7:21 AM
I still have the Wizard magazine when they were talking about Arnold for Doc. Funny thing is its the same issue they released the cast for the first C film.
decimus83 - 9/17/2013, 7:21 AM
Don't know much about Doc Savage, but I just bet that the "enemy" of the film will actually turn out to be a front-man for another person who actually is the real enemy even though he claims to be what the front-man claimed to be when he is actually nothing like what the enemy was going to be, since he will not be true to the source material and will instead be a complete fabrication with random powers.

The front-man's real name, by the way, will be something like Arron Whitlow.

Shane Black sucks!
StrangerX - 9/17/2013, 7:22 AM
* first X film

CBM! These ads are killing me! At least give us the option of clicking them off! It's becoming a hassle to even come here anymore.
heitish - 9/17/2013, 7:34 AM
The majority thinks that IM3 is a good movie,
And so do I!
jp688 - 9/17/2013, 7:47 AM
THIS is the movie I've been waiting for for all these years! This and T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents.
jp688 - 9/17/2013, 7:48 AM
BTW, a billion and a half dollars say that absolutely nobody on planet Earth gives a rat's ass that you might feel compelled to say how much IM3 "sucked!". BTW, nice vocabulary, Einsteins.
DurtyTalynt - 9/17/2013, 8:03 AM
I remember reading one of my old Wizard magazines and it had an article about Arnold playing Doc. Anyway since then ive been interested in seeing this movie get made and Shanes take on the character sounds ok with.
DurtyTalynt - 9/17/2013, 8:22 AM
And Iron man 3 was a good comicbook film.
Newbus - 9/17/2013, 8:39 AM
I remember seeing the film ages ago but I recall it was Doc Savage's sidekicks that did the work. He just stood around being Bronze and tanned.
TheMadman - 9/17/2013, 9:00 AM
Honestly, in the photo used in the article, he resembles Armie Hammer. He's a big dude.
Starjammer - 9/17/2013, 9:17 AM
sanjuro

Dude no, you definitely blame Shane Black. But most of all Kevin Feige. At any point he could have said "Wait...this is terrible."
Mechagino - 9/17/2013, 9:55 AM
You know I hear all this "inspiration for superman" dealy yet most of what people are referring to doesn't happen until a decade or so after his release, maybe even longer. :\

That said, I'm stoked for this as I love Indiana Jones and seeing who Doc is indeed a big inspiration to him, I look forward to watching it.

I should read my double pulp novel collection thingie when I get the chance.
naterator - 9/17/2013, 10:04 AM
This is the problem with Hollywood. Great idea...Cast THOR as DOC SAVAGE....Hollywood cant figure out how to be original. Nor does it understand the basic principals of continuity. People will associate THOR and DOC SAVAGE as linked if they use the same actor,,,especially if they are both MARVEL properties. Just cast a different actor... there are lots out there. Cast an unknown. how hard is that?
DocBantam - 9/17/2013, 10:27 AM
Josh Holloway for Doc. Make it happen
BezierCurve - 9/17/2013, 12:13 PM
@naterator Doc Savage is not a Marvel property you twit. Human Torch is Cap'N 'Murica, Daredevil is Batman, and the Joker was also in the Shining. The only who is that stupid is you.
jimoakley666 - 9/17/2013, 1:22 PM
Daniel Craig, maybe?
