Some may call it a predictable choice, but it's hard to argue with the logic of selecting Grand Theft Auto V as the "Game of the Year", despite the fact that it faced off against the likes of BioShock Infinite, Super Mario 3D World, The Last of Us and Tomb Raider in that category. Still, the one game which many thought could take down Rockstar's latest release was The Last of Us, and while it fell slightly short of doing so, the superb release still managed to walk away with awards for "Best PlayStation Game", "Best Studio", and perhaps most deservedly, honours for its superb voice cast.

Yeah, my son was just looking at that...
LittleDanglyThing - 12/8/2013, 3:23 AM
Too bad Spike's video game awards is a joke.
It's basically a popularity contest, that shitty Walking Dead point and click "game" won Game of the Year last year... that's not a game.
Sumitsjc - 12/8/2013, 3:23 AM
Great list although I thought last of us will be the GOTY.
And Why Batman: Arkham Origins didn't even get the Nomination.that means Rocksteady have to go big next year.
driver - 12/8/2013, 3:24 AM
Game of the Year??? It is fun but Last of US makes it look like shit in any department except sandbox!
LTTOBTS - 12/8/2013, 3:51 AM
Grand Theft Auto's MASSIVE open world game play allows them to win the Game of the Year. The way it's set out. The things you can do. The places you can see. There's nothing quite like it. Crushing The Last of Us' sales within a week shows how popular and deserving the game is.

Graphics also kick The Last of Us into the middle of next week. That is why, GTA V remains as the most popular game of 2013 and worthy winner of Game of the Year.

You need your eyes checked if you think GTA V had better graphics than TLoU. I mean come on. Go back to your X-box lol
Groillagrod87 - 12/8/2013, 4:04 AM
No love for tomb raider it was a great game.
TheFascinatingMan - 12/8/2013, 4:05 AM
I think we can all agree that Joel McHale single-handedly made this show the hellhole it was. What a loser. I was trying to watch with my family and he mentioned stuff like uterus smoke!
Newbus - 12/8/2013, 4:07 AM
I haven't played the last of us but looks like any previous on-rails-survival-zombie-game. It reminds me of Half Life and that's over ten years old.

The Last of Us raised the bar in gaming. It's incredible!
Bl00dwerK - 12/8/2013, 4:27 AM
What's with all the Ellen Page games?
Alphadog - 12/8/2013, 4:29 AM
I kind of regret buying The Last of Us. Great graphics but i did not care about the characters that much and gameplay was so boring. Seriously, I love Uncharted but Last of Us sucked. Its suppost to be fun ence it being a game. Haven't played GTA 5 but it seems a whole lot more fun. If guys disagree than stick with that and Walking dead. Meanwhile i'll be playing Infamous and Batman Arkham series over and over again without getting bored.
KidGoku - 12/8/2013, 4:38 AM
GTA V got real boring quick. The Last of Us deserved that.
MightyZeus - 12/8/2013, 4:50 AM
GTA 5 was over rated at best. It was a great game but it was decent but a brilliant game to look at.

Glad Black Flag is up there along with Bioshock Infinite. The Last of Us deserves way more credit.
patrat18 - 12/8/2013, 5:40 AM
Injustice.
TheMexicanSuperman - 12/8/2013, 6:11 AM
@Alphadog, I'm guessing you like Michael Bay style games. If you think the game was boring, then films like Godfather, The Road, The Master, Watchmen, and films like those are the most boring films to you.

@Newbus, you should really play the game. It's not really about zombies (infected) at all. The game is more about the relationship between the two main characters, and their willingness to protect each other at all cost from humans and infected. The game is one the most brutal games I've played, and by brutal I mean the stuff you have to do to survive. The game is a masterpiece. If you have seen the film called The Road, then it would give a good example of how the game is.
DefcoN - 12/8/2013, 6:16 AM
The Last of Us was a masterpiece, that kind of game I've been waiting to play for many years.
ReeferInferno - 12/8/2013, 6:35 AM
I thought GTA5 deserved to win best game of the year, but the Last of Us has a better story but I loved both so I'm happy.

As a TLoUit was great, but the gameplay did start to feel a little repetitive to me after a while like having to use the raft for Ellie like so many times. GTA 5 had so much more varied gameplay that it deserved to win best game imo. Maybe it's cause this is my first GTA game or something.

Also the Last of Us graphics are way better than GTA5.
MisterJay - 12/8/2013, 6:43 AM
and the winner is.... me! cause i have both the last of us and gtaV and i love them both
ATrueHero1987 - 12/8/2013, 6:52 AM
Shame that Tomb Raider didn't win anything. It is a great game and it really surprised me.
HeisenBane - 12/8/2013, 7:24 AM
GTA5 for as fun as it was does not deserve game of the year. The only reason it won is because its called GTA. I actually found myself getting bored about 3 quarters of the way into the game, including completing most sides and going for collectibles. And the fact its online is a complete shambles.
HeisenBane - 12/8/2013, 7:26 AM
Oh and GTA better graphics than the Last of Us..specsavers anyone?
ATrueHero1987 - 12/8/2013, 7:38 AM
"GTA5 for as fun as it was does not deserve game of the year. The only reason it won is because its called GTA."

Or maybe...because it is considered a great game? O_o

I knew that GOTY would go to GTA5 or TLOU. It's funny that people are getting upset that TLOU didn't win.lol
BatManiac - 12/8/2013, 8:00 AM
The Last Of Us bored the shit out of me.
Alphadog - 12/8/2013, 8:33 AM
@MexicanSuperman Congratulations, you have the honor of being one of the stupidest people I've ever met. Seriously, I feel embarrassed for being on the same site as someone that compares Movies to Videogames. The most important part of a game is the gameplay and the objective of a developer should be to make creative levels that challange you as much as possible. Give us features that we haven't seen before. A game that also has good storytelling should be awarded but the objective is to do something never done before and that's where NaughtyDog failed. Besides, how good is a writer if he doesn't make you care about the characters. I cared about what Cole would do in Infamous and i was kind of sad when he died and when he had to kill his best friend. On the other hand i didn't care about the Joel's daughter and i wouldn be sad if Ellie had died at the end of the game. But hey, congratulations for NaughtyDog for making me not want to buy a sequel to the game. If they keep going on this road then maybe a few thousand people will accompany me. But don't worry cause I'm not going to start playing stupid games instead, not I'll make sure to watch the Walkthrough on Youtube. I'll probably have as much fun. In the meantime i'll happly go play Watchdogs and Infamous Second Son when they come out.
Alphadog - 12/8/2013, 8:34 AM
@Batmaniac You're not alone.
thewolfx - 12/8/2013, 8:53 AM
Seems legit and i love last of us
Ryguy88 - 12/8/2013, 9:46 AM
GTA V is a worthy winner and I had fun playing it but it din't grab me like The Last of Us and it didn't leaving me thinking long after I played it. That may not be what is required of Game of the Year though.
Ryguy88 - 12/8/2013, 9:48 AM
Batmaniac, how far did you get? The game does take a little bit to get into but once it hits its stride it will waste all of your time!
Bailkurn44 - 12/8/2013, 10:03 AM
Bioshock Infinite should have got game of the year it was amazin!!!!
BritishMonkey - 12/8/2013, 10:14 AM
I'm more happy that Bioshock Infinite got best shooter award.
actionmoviefanatix - 12/8/2013, 12:41 PM
I just don't understand the fascination with these GTA games. I understand that they're huge games and there's "lots to do" - which usually means there is a decent number of things you can do over and over. Every GTA game I try has me bored within a few hours.

The one that actually pisses me off most, though, is Gone Home winning two awards. I made the mistake of paying $20 for that game a while back after hearing so many good things. I actually do love the exploration feel but when you finally get to the end, less than two hours later, it feels like you were just cheated out of $20 and the last two hours of your life. The game starts by making you think there might be some mystery or sci-fi or something supernatural going on but at the end it is nothing more than a love story. Really pissed me off and seeing this is opening those wounds again...
ForeverPowerful - 12/8/2013, 12:54 PM
GTA 5 won because of this guy right here:

Nivekian - 12/8/2013, 1:34 PM
Too bad Trevor Phillips didn't take them all home.
AOSgotAlright - 12/8/2013, 2:21 PM
I liked both The Last of Us and GTA5, as well as Bioshock. A really surprisingly well done game was Far Cry 3. It's big and open and also tactical which none of the other games quite had. I think because the series has a certain stigma, it didn't get the credit it deserves.

FIFA 14 should have won best sports game. My least favorite of the series in a long time, but still heads and shoulders above the rest.
ForeverPowerful - 12/8/2013, 2:41 PM
@Thorablesight

I agree 100% with you on Far Cry 3. One of the most surprisingly well made games I've played in awhile. I was expecting GTA 5 to be good because of the series history. Far Cry 2 wasn't bad at all, but I wasn't expecting a very well written story and one of the most memorable video game villains of recent times.
ChanchoMcGrady - 12/8/2013, 3:21 PM
The Last of Us should have been GOTY. Best video game I've ever played.
FerFogs - 12/8/2013, 4:01 PM
GTA V is really impressive. Haven't played Last of Us.
