BOX OFFICE: 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE Conquers Competition At Home And Overseas

Many had assumed that Noam Murro's 300: Rise of an Empire would be both a critical and commercial flop, and while the reaction has been admittedly mixed, the sequel to the Zack Snyder helmed original has dominated both the North American and worldwide box offices this weekend.

So, it looks like 300: Rise of an Empire will be a commercial hit, but with a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes (where it's described as an "empty exercise in stylish gore" and a "step down from its predecessor"), it doesn't seem unfair to say that this isn't exactly a slam dunk for Warner Bros.! What did you think of the movie? Let us know in the comment section below.

After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.

STARRING:

Sullivan Stapleton as Themistocles
Eva Green as Artemisia
Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo of Sparta
Rodrigo Santoro as King Xerxes
Hans Matheson as Aeskylos
Andrew Pleavin as Daxos
Callan Mulvey as Scyllias
David Wenham as Dilios
Jack O'Connell as Calisto
Andrew Tiernan as Ephialtes
Yigal Naor as Darius

300: Rise of an Empire did great this weekend worldwide! $132 million opening worldwide weekend is great! Saw it yesterday in 3D. Decent movie with some great acting (Eva Green being the major standout) and awesome action scenes made better by how it's directed. Some of the CGI was a bit iffy at points and the story could of used a little more spicing up. For what it is, it's a damn enjoyable film that will surely entertain fans of the previous film.
3.5/5

Wasn't a fan of the first movie, but this one was surprisingly awesome. Loved the naval battles, and Eva Green was a total badass. Haven't had this much fun while watching in a movie in a long time tbh
DrunkenNukem - 3/9/2014, 11:48 AM
Is a good movie...the 1st one was better
ALegendaryPanda - 3/9/2014, 11:50 AM
I saw it yesterday and while I didn't like it as much as the original, I thought it was very enjoyable.
ALegendaryPanda - 3/9/2014, 11:50 AM
And Eva Green was a great villain!

Still surprised this is doing well. Good news for WB.
Grabthemcakes - 3/9/2014, 11:56 AM
Snyder haters are rallying for this movie to fail which is insane given this is a CBM site. Regardless, the opening weekend box office put a wrench in their hopes of the movie failing. With this opening weekend 300 ROAE is going to turn out rather profitable. Depending on how possible it is not unreasonable to think a third installment may be on this way making 300 a franchise. With a $110 million budget for 300: ROAE is in the driver’s seat.
MrBatmor - 3/9/2014, 12:01 PM
@grab I only know one person who did not like this movie(on this site) ie (ror )... So no one was really hoping this movie to fail.. Snyder was not really involved...he was one of the producers
JoJo1982 - 3/9/2014, 12:01 PM
@grabthemcakes

Well actually this movie is cbm related since it's franchise is based on the frank miller's comic book
But this movie should at least make back it's budget in the U.S. and looking to do pretty damn well overseas
DrunkenNukem - 3/9/2014, 12:01 PM
@Grab yeah...i wonder where is my pal @andrew
JoJo1982 - 3/9/2014, 12:03 PM
@goldenone

The only good things in this movie is some pretty impressive action scenes and Eva green that's pretty much it
JoJo1982 - 3/9/2014, 12:03 PM
@drunken

On suicide watch lol
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 3/9/2014, 12:03 PM
Wait, an 'R' rated feature taking the #1 spot? And actually gaining a sizable profit? Gimme my Deadpool movie, you [frick]s.
alecwright - 3/9/2014, 12:13 PM
Every one of u nerds should be stoked that a R-rated action flick made so much bank! This is a wake up call to studios that R-rated actioners can be profitable.

So bring on the BLOOD AND BOOBS MOTHER[frick]ERS!
ekrolo2 - 3/9/2014, 12:22 PM
Why is a B or B- Cinemascore mediocre but a B+ and over is great?
DrunkenNukem - 3/9/2014, 12:24 PM
WB produced SIN CITY and 300

They already know R-rated films works..and are profitable
ekrolo2 - 3/9/2014, 12:26 PM
@Drunken

So.... Would they be open to a Suicide Squad movie that was rated R?
Darth258 - 3/9/2014, 12:27 PM
Watched it yesterday. A really good sequel.
JamesMan - 3/9/2014, 12:29 PM
@ekrolo2

Well remember a few months ago there was a rumor that WB/DC would be doing smaller budget CBM's and Suicide Squad was mentioned.
JoJo1982 - 3/9/2014, 12:33 PM
Deathstroke movie!!!
MexicanChinman - 3/9/2014, 12:34 PM
I can't wait to watch this movie. Godzillafart is having a heart attack.
DrunkenNukem - 3/9/2014, 12:36 PM
@ekrolo2 usually for R-rated that depends of the director and the writer(s) for a film..

But yeah i mean they should be open to do so

I hope to see a movie about SUICIDE Squad...
JoJo1982 - 3/9/2014, 12:42 PM
Lot of haters are on suicide watch right now
Brainiac13 - 3/9/2014, 1:02 PM
Yet to see..........good that it's doing well.

:D
Comedian03 - 3/9/2014, 1:09 PM
The ONLY enjoyable part of this movie was Eva Green's sex scene.

I couldn't stop looking at my watch waiting for it to be over. 300 wasn't anything special, but it was at least fun to watch for the action and the visuals, this one just seems like they tried so hard to imitate the first one.
MrNiklander - 3/9/2014, 1:09 PM
Awesome I liked 300 and from the looks of things I will love the shit out of this one

Any real man loves the 300 movies. Testosterone-deficient "men" will not.
Ramiel - 3/9/2014, 1:40 PM
The first one was really fun. This one looks rubbish.
SaxoWolf - 3/9/2014, 2:07 PM
gaikinger - 3/9/2014, 2:18 PM
Excellent companion to the original..

While the first was geared to Republicans.......red cloaks and uncompromising battlers.....

We now get blue cloaks with reluctant fighters who eventually get bailed out by the guys in red......for the democrats.

Something for both sides of the aisle......yeah!

Athenians = boylovers
gaikinger - 3/9/2014, 2:19 PM
Negrotige - couldn't sum it up better myself
YoungThanos - 3/9/2014, 2:31 PM
Glade it's doing well.
GodzillaKart - 3/9/2014, 2:55 PM
@Bravado: A million and one, baby! A million and one.

sameoldthing - 3/9/2014, 2:59 PM
It's a very cool movie,great action with sex & violence.
So glad an R-rated action film is successful.
Tired of the weak ass PG crap.
GodzillaKart - 3/9/2014, 3:01 PM
Won't be seeing. If I'm going to watch a really stupid movie....I prefer those that know they are stupid.

GodzillaKart - 3/9/2014, 3:02 PM
OK. That was trolling. I apologize. :)
