With a mix of effective character moments, viscerally thrilling action, humor, intrigue, and surprising heart, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of Marvel Studios' strongest entries to date. This one is in fact a game changer. [9/10]

Winter Soldier hits its marks, and hits most of them strongly. If you’re a fan of the ongoing Marvel movie saga, there’s a lot to chew on. If you enjoy “which side are you on” conspiracies, the twists and turns satisfy. If you like team-up action with great chase sequences where you can put your brain in neutral and let the screen wash over you, a medium popcorn is probably required. Just make sure to engage your brain again for the ending.

For whatever reason, Captain America seems to be the character that the folks at Marvel Studios are really best at translating to the big screen. Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger was an immensely fun period adventure with wonderful themes about duty and honor, and The Winter Soldier only furthers and expands on those ideas while replacing The Dirty Dozen approach with something closer to Three Days of the Condor. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a spectacularly-made, tense, thrilling ride, and whether you go to the theater for the blockbuster action or the exciting story, you will leave more than satisfied. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an ideal middle chapter in a larger story. The performances are charismatic, the story is surprising, and the action exciting. Plot wise, there’s some complex stuff going on ,which you’ll definitely need a conversation or two to get straight. When that happens though, you’ll be on pins and needles to see what it all means for everything Marvel moving ahead. There are some problems, but even acknowledging those, it’s hard not to fall in love with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. [7.5/10]

SOURCE: Slash Film

The first “Captain America” had a lot of great ideas, but its vacillation in tone and occasional failures to deliver the emotions for which it was clearly aiming made it one of the lesser recent Marvel movies. This time around, however, it's a movie that's raising the bar on what we can expect from the ongoing adventures of these men and women in tights.

All that said, there is a lot to like here. It looks great, it sounds great (Henry Jackman's score is a keeper), is performed strongly across the board, has some heart and soul behind, isn't afraid to be a little weird sometimes (another character from the first movie makes a very odd, very enjoyable return at the mid-point), and certainly more so than "Iron Man 3" or "Thor: The Dark World," feels like its own beast rather than the latest $200 million episode of the Marvel TV series. And maybe it's because it gets so much right, that what it gets wrong feels all the more frustrating. [B-]

The central conflict of this film is completely absurd – and may have far-reaching implications for some of the other Marvel properties – but the series continues to luck out with its ace casting choices, zippy dialogue and fast action. Despite all the explosions and ridiculous technology, you still care about Steve Rogers, whose anachronistic seriousness trying dutifully to fit in to our jaded times is as apt a metaphor for remix culture as anything else. This entry won’t win any new converts, but anyone already invested in this series is going to have a blast. [8/10]

SOURCE: Screen Crush

Captain America may not flex as much box-office muscle as his Marvel stablemates Iron Man and Thor, but there's a steadfast band of fans who pledge allegiance to Captain America: The First Avenger as possibly the best of all the Marvel superhero films — other than The Avengers. These true-blue enthusiasts will not be disappointed in this second entry in the series, which takes the bold (for Marvel) step of reducing CGI spectacle to a relative minimum in favor of reviving the pleasures of hard-driving old-school action, surprising character development and intriguing suspense.

SOURCE: The Hollywood Reporter

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" may not be the perfect representation of the comic books but that's actually a good thing. Instead, it gains huge points by working as a standalone movie set in the world of espionage and world politics that's different enough from previous Marvel movies to be more accessible for non-comic fans than anything Marvel's done thus far. [8/10]

SOURCE: Superhero Hype

Consistently entertaining, it clips along with the swagger that Marvel has earned as the dominant force in modern blockbusters, steamrolling over the sillier plot points. And the end result does at least help to bring around some seismic shifts to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a brave move from a studio unwilling to rest on their (ridiculously successful) laurels. With a string of gratifying action sequences, and a breakneck pace leavened by a frequently witty script, The Winter Soldier stands alone as a solidly entertaining blockbuster. [4*]

With Steve and the rest of the Avengers having each taken sizeable steps on their own personal journeys, it makes it even more exciting to see how these characters interact with one another once they reassemble next year. To that end, make sure you stay watching through the credits. Captain’s orders. [5*]

THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/20/2014, 1:43 PM
Phase 2 needs a good movie. This WILL be great
Nick56 - 3/20/2014, 1:44 PM
Didn't IM3 and Thor 2 get positive reviews? Yeah so this means nothing to me. Really excited for it, hope its not another letdown.
ALmazing - 3/20/2014, 1:45 PM
Good Job Marvel...

AlphaMasterFlex - 3/20/2014, 1:45 PM
So hopefully it's not [frick]ing shit like Thor 2. :D
KidGoku - 3/20/2014, 1:45 PM
I'm excited for this but I really think that Guardians of the Galaxy will be the best out of the Phase 2 films. I just got a feeling.
Starfox - 3/20/2014, 1:46 PM
Keep em Coming.
KidGoku - 3/20/2014, 1:46 PM
But yeah reviews don't mean shit when it comes to CBMs, same with comedies. It's all a matter of taste.
SimyJo - 3/20/2014, 1:47 PM
S'alright I s'pose. Beats being poked with a sh**ty -stick.

SimyJo

(Kidding!: - can't frickin' wait!)
Starfox - 3/20/2014, 1:48 PM
oh and [frick] that 7.5 out of 10.
ndwwrestler2 - 3/20/2014, 1:49 PM
Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 had their flaws, but I enjoyed them for the most part although they weren't as good as I wanted them or expected them to be. But out of the three, Cap has the highest expectations (for me) because it's based off my favorite all-time comic book.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/20/2014, 1:50 PM
Predicting around an 86-90% on Rotten
ezio619 - 3/20/2014, 1:51 PM
kurne-its mainly because he is just a unstoppable killing machine, he doesnt really have a personality but it makes sense since he is not himself throught almost all of the film apparently, he is brainwashed, though i have heard he is a badass

i think phase 2 has been really good sofar,im3 was really good, thor was good, not great, just good,i havent disliked a marvel studios film yet,i think their weakest film is iron man 2 and even that is ok imo but i dont think they have made a really great one either, avengers is realllllllllllly good imo, it combines thefun of an action blockbuster with some great character interaction and depth, its not the deepest thing in the world but it does have some depth to it,i do hope cap 2 and guardians kick it up a notch and then we end with a bang with age of ultron
batman1216 - 3/20/2014, 1:53 PM
I knew it would get reviews, but as always the early hype machine and pre-screenings had me expecting to see 10's across the board and this does seem to be slightly disappointing in that regard. Same thing happened with all comic movies last year as well.
CaptainAmerica31 - 3/20/2014, 1:54 PM
It's gonna be better than Iron man 3 and Thor, so far it's getting good review, not necessarily great but it'll be marvels first 80% movie on RT.
patriautism - 3/20/2014, 1:54 PM
Well I sure loved the first 10 minutes that was released online. I'll be first in line.
batz11 - 3/20/2014, 1:54 PM
Suck it haters!

Haha ;)
DrDoom - 3/20/2014, 1:55 PM
I loved Phase Two so far, and it looks like Winter Soldier won't break the streak.

Bring it home, Marvel!
CaptainAmerica31 - 3/20/2014, 1:56 PM
It's possible it can reach 90%, but I'm think high 80s as of now. More reviews will come and we'll be able to get a solid look. If the next couple of reviews are negative it maybe dip too high 70s but we really can't tell. I'm going for 80%, marvel needs an 80%
ProfessorX - 3/20/2014, 1:56 PM
The reviews don't mean much in assessing how good a movie is. HOWEVER, positive reviews do get more people to go and see the movie, which is obviously a good thing.
ComicsBornAndBred - 3/20/2014, 1:56 PM
This film shouldn't be anything lower than 8/10... No 8.5/10
Maestro - 3/20/2014, 1:56 PM
IGN's con

"A bit plot heavy"

Yup, this film will be awesome. Predicting 88%-95% on RT

A fresh rating is over 55 I believe. This movie will get ton's of fresh ratings.
AsgardianHobo - 3/20/2014, 1:58 PM
RT at 100% after 6 reviews! niiiice!
ComicsBornAndBred - 3/20/2014, 1:58 PM
I see this film ending with like a 80- 85% on rotten tomatoes when it's all said and done. IM3 had like a 76 and this is waaay better than that
ProfessorX - 3/20/2014, 1:58 PM
@Spidey31: My prediction is 89%.
iDude - 3/20/2014, 1:59 PM
Have a feeling this is going to be the best Marvel movie yet. Come on April 4th!
Omarvls - 3/20/2014, 1:59 PM
IGN

9.0 AMAZING

ezio619 - 3/20/2014, 1:59 PM
spideyboy-u may be right cause the guysover at screenrant saidthat back in comic con of 2012, they met with their sources at marvel and they said cap 2 was the best script marvel studios has ever had which seems to be true for now but they then met their source again last year and while they said cap 2 is great, but when james gunn rewrote the script for guardians, it is now the best script they ever have had
charlie2094 - 3/20/2014, 1:59 PM
@Nick56

Thor didn't get great reviews, almost "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes, definitely not as strong as Cap. Thor reviews said it was a bit generic

So glad this has turned out well! Lost a bit of faith in Marvel last year, super excited this has turned out so well! Having great reviews absolutely speaks quality, excited for this
CaptainAmerica31 - 3/20/2014, 1:59 PM
Plot heavy is good. Marvel needs to make more movies like this and less like IM3 and TDW. Those are brining phase two down for me
DaVinci31 - 3/20/2014, 2:00 PM
Gotta' agree with MrBlackJack on this one.
ezio619 - 3/20/2014, 2:01 PM
i am so happy that my favorite member of the MCU version of The Avengers and one of my favorite superheroes Captain America is getting one of,if not the best marvel studios film so far
CaptainAmerica31 - 3/20/2014, 2:02 PM
Thor and IM3 got fresh reviews when they came out, these coming weeks should give is a good picture on how far it will drop. If it maintains above a 90% all the way to the week it's released there is no doubt it'll be a 80%+ movie. It'll be on BB and First class level of good. Which is wonderful
antman8o8 - 3/20/2014, 2:02 PM
YES!

ezio619 - 3/20/2014, 2:03 PM
spidey-im3 imo is more character heavy, more Tony oriented and thor 2 is character oriented too, mainly with the relationship between thor and loki atleast in my opinion
Maestro - 3/20/2014, 2:03 PM
Nubase - 3/20/2014, 2:03 PM
@batz11

RT means noting at all or to me, also only 6 people have given it a fresh review hence its 100% rating, guess l will wait for the free download in a couple of months time
Maestro - 3/20/2014, 2:04 PM
@ezio

agreed
SpiderFraud - 3/20/2014, 2:06 PM
I guess critic reviews mean a lot when its positive . Plan on seeing Cap in a few hours, can't wait.
