Kevin Feige Talks ANT-MAN, Why's He's Not In AVENGERS: AOU, Casting Paul Rudd And More

Kevin Feige explains how Ant-Man is indeed connected to the MCU, why the character won't be in Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd's take on Hank Pym and Scott Lang. He also seemingly confirms the appearance of a younger Hank and Tony Stark as the creator of Ultron.

Edgar Wright's Ant-Man is a movie which has been a long time coming, especially as it's been in the works before Iron Man blasted onto the big screen in 2008. Now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded to such a great extent, Empire Magazine caught up with Kevin Feige to ask him whether or not the movie has been changed in order to reflect that. "A little bit. Not much. There's been a little bit of connective tissue that wouldn't have been there in in his draft ten years ago," he revealed. "We changed, frankly some of the MCU to accommodate this version of Ant-Man. Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with Ant-Man, going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for Avengers the first time. It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the Ant-Man story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to Avengers."

As for why Hank Pym - the original creator of Ultron in the comic books - isn't in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Feige explained: "It was two things - a story Edgar wanted to tell that we'll see with Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, and now we're 11 films in, it's looking at the characters we've already introduced who already have the technology and the brains to do...certain things [Laughs]." He's obviously alluding to Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark there, an equally logical choice for the creator of Ultron in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for whether Pym is the "original Tony Stark", he added, "He's certainly older. Original Tony Stark? In that he is an inventor and a scientist, but he has a very different demeanour that Tony and a very different ego, even when he was younger."

Finally, talk turned to the decision to cast Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, and Feige dropped a few very interesting hints about the Anchorman star's take on the character. "Look at that origin of the petty crook who comes into contact with a suit and does his best to make good, and then look at someone like Paul Rudd, who can do slightly unsavoury things like break into people's houses and still be charming and who you root for and whose redemption you will find satisfaction in." How do you guys feel about these comments? Let's hear what the Ant-man 'fans' have to say about this;)
batz11 - 4/24/2014, 6:18 AM
This movie is a much bigger 'risk' than GotG imo...think it will still kill if done right...I trust Edgar and liking the cast so far...
Kurne - 4/24/2014, 6:19 AM
I would have liked Pym and Stark as the MCU's science bros :(
Lozzy - 4/24/2014, 6:20 AM
I cant handle all this Marvel talk today!!!!!!!!!
Shroombeast - 4/24/2014, 6:21 AM
I think they should have done Ant-Man before Avengers 2, but oh well. Hell, they probably should have done it instead of Iron Man 2. And [frick] this old Hank Pym shit.
batmanvsuperman - 4/24/2014, 6:27 AM
Awesome love ant man and Paul Rudd no homo
TheAbaryMan369 - 4/24/2014, 6:27 AM
As much as I am looking forward to Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, not including Hank Pym is a major mistake. Hank Pym, believe-it-or-not, is one of my favorite Marvel characters. I'd love to see him done with perfection.
FirstAvenger - 4/24/2014, 6:27 AM
I wake up and it's Marvel day??? Cool!
Doopie - 4/24/2014, 6:28 AM
Edgar's a great movie maker i'm sure he will turn this into gold.
MrMartinMarvel - 4/24/2014, 6:28 AM
Yep, it's definitely a Marvel news day. Let's do this…
Doopie - 4/24/2014, 6:28 AM
all this marvel news is coming from just one interview?
SuperCat - 4/24/2014, 6:32 AM
F*ck that. He should be in the movie.

As pissed off as I was upon hearing the news about old Pym, and as much I wish they were making Dr Strange or something instead of Ant-Man, I'm really looking forward to Wright's interpretation of of the character. I'm sure he's gonna knock it straight out of the mother[frick]ing park!
Missy - 4/24/2014, 6:38 AM
He should have at least a cameo... well, who says he will not have?
MrCBM56 - 4/24/2014, 6:38 AM
What a bunch of unnecessary changes to the character. Not really looking foward to this....
RodimusPryme - 4/24/2014, 6:39 AM
Ant-Man Sucks.
Spock0Clock - 4/24/2014, 6:43 AM
I'm really looking forward to Ant-Man. I'm a long-time Pym fan, but I have no problem with him playing a little second fiddle to Stark (and even Lang). After all, that's Pym's lot in life: to be the punching bag. Plus, I'm interested in what sort of superhero stuff was going on between Captain America's glory days and Iron Man's origins. Flashbacks of the first Ant-Man are a perfect way to do that.

As for Rudd, love him. It sounds like they're going to make him a bit more O'Grady "irredeemable", which is also cool. I'm a little bummed that Ultron is getting coopted by Stark, but I'm 90% sure we'll get Rudd and Lilly as Ant-Man and Wasp in Avengers 3 (and a bit beyond), and that's got me ballistically excited.

I ain't even mad at Fiege

I'm mad at Wright, even though I completely understand his reason for not being able to do the movie. The problem is that he waited too long to do his original film, but now 8 years later still wants to do that same story. Still can't wait tho. Movie will be crazy as phuck
ATrueHero1987 - 4/24/2014, 6:51 AM
Yep it's one of those days where it's Marvel news all day! So I hope later on today, Feige talkes about Dr. Strange & Black Panther. ;)
gambgel - 4/24/2014, 6:53 AM
cheap excuse, Kevin. You all just wanted Tony aka Robert Jr to be the creator and not caring enough about Hank being Ultron's creator.
MexicanSuperman - 4/24/2014, 6:54 AM
Antman > Avengers Age of Ultron.
charlie2094 - 4/24/2014, 6:54 AM
Really looking forward to this, think this will really surprise people, especially with Wright at the helm.

Don't mind too much that Pym isn't involved with Ultron, definitely makes more sense to have Stark be mostly responsible, have a far bigger impact that introducing a new character who's responsible.
MexicanSuperman - 4/24/2014, 6:55 AM
@gambgel, who cares? Marvel Studios changes stuff from the comics all the time.
Scarilian - 4/24/2014, 6:55 AM
Makes more sense to have Ant-Man as the inventor - even if he is not a superhero yet have him introduced as someone helping Stark create Ultron. Or have Stark base Ultron off Ant-Man. Then you have an Ant-Man film after The Avengers in which you establish the character and set up that the Ultron program is still a factor which gives you the possibility of sequels down the line.
marvel72 - 4/24/2014, 6:56 AM
would love to see the blueprints to ultron in ant-man,maybe have shield take them from him & tony stark gets his hands on them somehow.
Alfredo27 - 4/24/2014, 6:57 AM
Marvel rapes its own comics worse than fox does it just people know Xmen about 5000x better.

I think GOG will be there worst yet, just so much forced comedy designed for middle schoolers
MrMartinMarvel - 4/24/2014, 6:59 AM
@gambel We don't even know if Tony does create Ultron. I'm still standing by my theory that Ultron is an AI created by Hydra, that becomes sentient and infects an Iron Man armor.
MrCBM56 - 4/24/2014, 7:01 AM
Oh my that's even worse. Have Ultron born into evil and created for the sole purpose of? Yeah, just have Tony create him. That's even worse.
MrCBM56 - 4/24/2014, 7:02 AM

@OmegaDaGod

im with you bro whats so damn special about edgarwrights story any way that Marvel went and change Their own goddamn comic book history to accommodate him??? 10 years later and they still did not think that Ant man should be in the Avengers??? That shit dont make no goddamn sense!!!!
MrMartinMarvel - 4/24/2014, 7:02 AM
"Marvel rapes its own comics worse than fox does it just people know Xmen about 5000x better."

JoJo1982 - 4/24/2014, 7:04 AM
I don't know about about Antman
Guess will have to wait till I see some footage but the whole old Hank pym sucks.
Pretty much want get Giant Man helping the Avengers :(
DukeAcureds - 4/24/2014, 7:07 AM
"Even when he was younger."
Yep, Pym is gonna be the bad guy. He gonna turn to the dark side. This is a really good way of staying true to the most interesting aspects of his character, whilst not having such a flawed hero take center stage in a Disney movie. I am happy with this. I still think it would've been even beter had they kept Ultron as a part of the Ant-Man mythology, but whatevs. Whedon I trust.
But fvck me, I can barely wait for this film any longer. I remember hearing about this when Raimi's first Spider-Man film was in theaters. Now the sequel to the reboot of the Raimi trilogy is in theaters and we've still got a year to wait.
Tiny hero. Big-assed wait.
MrSotoMan - 4/24/2014, 7:09 AM
You know why Marvel doesn't want Ant-Man in The Avengers yet?

No one likes him. I mean nobody. I remember standing in line at the advance screening for Captain America 2, and eventually someone brought up the future of Marvel movies. Without mentioning Ant-Man from somebody like "What do you think of Ant-Man?" no it was more like "Ant-Man sounds like the lamest superhero man!"

Not joking, than 2-3 other people agreed with him immediately right after citing they had no interest in Ant-Man what so ever. So, to have Pym as not the creator of Ultron, makes sense. Again, we see a point in it as fans because well we read these comics for years and we are accustomed to that fact that Ultron was built by Pym. Honestly though, they didn't do that much harm. All they did was take out Pym and put in Stark, the story that you love is still in tact, just with someone else that makes a lot more sense in the MCU.

No bullshit though on the story I just told about Ant-Man, everybody who doesn't really read comics or read comics doesn't necessarily care for Ant-Man. Doesn't mean there is no fans, it just means it is a small margin of fans.
InfiniteMonkey - 4/24/2014, 7:09 AM
Looking forward to this.

Hope we see Evangeline in a skimpy outfit.
TheBaroness89 - 4/24/2014, 7:10 AM
They did the same thing for Next Avengers Heroes of Tomorrow- Stark created Ultron...nothing new to me. I would have liked Pym but at least it was something logically done. Its not like they are saying Hawkeye created Ultron.
InfiniteMonkey - 4/24/2014, 7:12 AM
Show us this girl Nowzzzzzzzz!
MrMartinMarvel - 4/24/2014, 7:14 AM
@MrCBM What's wrong with my theory? If they're not gonna have Pym make him, then the whole "designed for good but goes evil" thing becomes unnecessary.
