Kevin Feige Discusses The Significance Of Death In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

A lot of fans weren't pleased when Agent Coulson was resurrected for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and after being asked whether Marvel ever seriously considered killing off Nick Fury in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Kevin Feige has commented on whether death means DEATH in the MCU!

Talking to Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked whether Marvel actually ever considered pulling the trigger for real and killing off Samuel L. Jackson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. "We never actually discussed doing it, no," he confirmed. "Maybe as part of a very early general conversation. But it didn't go particularly far before the idea that ended up in the film came up." As for whether or not they have any plans to kill off a major character in Avengers: Age of Ultron or beyond and if such a death would be permanent, he added: "You never know. Again, we take our cues from the comics and everyone knows that in comics and soap operas, people die and come back. Except for Uncle Ben and Bucky, but oh! Bucky's going to come back and it's going to be awesome. When appropriate to the story, we certainly will not hesitate. Frigga is dead. She's not coming back. Big funeral." In fairness, while death not having lasting consequences in the MCU could be criticised, that IS how it's always worked in the comic books that these movies are based on! Regardless, Feige then went on to talk a little more about what to expect from The Avengers sequel now that S.H.I.E.L.D. is gone. "The dynamic certainly has changed. For us that was one of the benefits of doing this storyline - that it will force them to use something different in their next team-up than S.H.I.E.L.D., which basically provided the groundwork and the basis by which they assembled the first time."

Kill them.
Mrcool210 - 4/24/2014, 5:51 PM
Seeing as how coulson came back im guessing they're going to be just like the comics, where aside from a few people death doesn't matter and they will just keep bringing them back.
Tony93 - 4/24/2014, 5:51 PM
significance of death..
"theres no such thing"
JordanKing - 4/24/2014, 5:51 PM
What death? Frigga is the only one that stuck and nobody gave a crap about her. Yinsen was more likeable!
TheAbaryMan369 - 4/24/2014, 5:52 PM
Coulson returning was pretty cool I guess, but now just keep people dead, okay Marvel?
TheAbaryMan369 - 4/24/2014, 5:52 PM
But if Pierce returns I'd laugh, and laugh, and laugh, then punch a wall.
staypuffed - 4/24/2014, 5:53 PM
What's the point of having Fury alive if he's not working for SHIELD?
marvel72 - 4/24/2014, 5:53 PM
you forgot another number one......

the number one(best)comic book movie ever!
ALegendaryPanda - 4/24/2014, 5:54 PM
I think they should kill off a major character permanently in Age of Ultron.
MrCBM56 - 4/24/2014, 5:54 PM
Frigga death was weak but the funeral was powerful.
yonny616 - 4/24/2014, 5:54 PM
The only people that die in the MCU is villains. I mean, even Aldrich Killian, who survived the suit expleoding died.

The number of times MainEvent changed his box office predictions: 4

Four styles? I only saw one: awesome.

ALegendaryPanda - 4/24/2014, 5:55 PM
Can you imagine the audience reaction if Ultron just blew Iron Man to pieces? Damn.
TheMexicanSuperman - 4/24/2014, 5:55 PM
I wish they kept Coulson dead.
StarYeezus - 4/24/2014, 5:56 PM
@MrCBM

Would you rather Kurse snapped her neck?

I kid!!!
DudeGuyMan - 4/24/2014, 5:57 PM
Alot of people have died in the MCU. Mostly innocent bystanders.
maninfinesuit - 4/24/2014, 5:57 PM
Also, kill Stark in Avengers 2. Do it.
DropAload - 4/24/2014, 5:58 PM
And we are the champions my friend.

And we'll keep on fighting till thee end.
blackandyellow - 4/24/2014, 5:58 PM
It's time to kill Black Widow and Hawkeye to make some room for Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Falcon, and the Defenders.

I accidentally clicked the button that goes to the very first article on this site and it was weird. It was news about X-Men 2 and Daredevil. I wonder if anyone from back then is still around?
SuperCat - 4/24/2014, 6:00 PM
Gotta admit, they had me fooled with Fury in Cap 2.

ALegendaryPanda - 4/24/2014, 6:01 PM
If George R.R. Martin was writing these movies Iron Man would've been dead at the end of the first Avengers. Lol
Tony93 - 4/24/2014, 6:01 PM
Lmao I forgot Aldrich Killian died from a pole swung by Pepper
StarYeezus - 4/24/2014, 6:04 PM

antoineflemming - 4/24/2014, 6:05 PM
LOL.
maninfinesuit - 4/24/2014, 6:05 PM
They should really just off Thor's entire supporting cast but Loki. They're all [frick]ing awful or forgettable.
antoineflemming - 4/24/2014, 6:05 PM
StarYeezus, none of them are going to die on screen.
StarYeezus - 4/24/2014, 6:05 PM
No Avengers will die. I do believe they'll end up splitting teams in the aftermath.
ManDeth - 4/24/2014, 6:05 PM
Feige forgets that comics and soap operas are heading towards extinction. Better to not be just like them.
SpideyQuad - 4/24/2014, 6:07 PM
Cat.... Fury dies???
MarvelSquadie - 4/24/2014, 6:07 PM
Lol, what if they kill Tony, but make him to an A.I.. Like what they did to Arnim Zola.. harhar. Tony the new JARVIS. And JARVIS now is Vision.
Demongod20 - 4/24/2014, 6:07 PM
Death is just a state of being. You pass on to the afterlife or other world but that doesn't mean you can't be resurrected if appropriate to the story. I just hope that they don’t bring people back willy nilly. They need to put rules on resurrection so that people just don’t go "Hey just use magic revive method". It should be difficult and messy to revive actual dead characters. I don’t mind bringing back mistakenly dead characters though.
Scarilian - 4/24/2014, 6:07 PM
@Tony93
"Lmao I forgot Aldrich Killian died from a pole swung by Pepper"

Actually he died from Pepper using her extremis powers to rip the arm off an Iron Man suit and throw a tank missile at him using the repulsor to explode the missile causing him to over-heat destroying him.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 4/24/2014, 6:07 PM
Yinsen- dead
Obadiah Stane- dead
Howard Stark- dead (never seen his death)
Whiplash- dead
Killian- dead
Maya Hansen- dead
Coldblood- dead
Extremis soldier brandt- dead
King Laufey- dead
Malekith- dead (but can be and hopefully is resurrected)
Alexander Pierce- dead
Frigga- dead

So yeah there are Marvel deaths that will stay permanent. Mostly all in Iron Man films. ;)
nikgrid - 4/24/2014, 6:07 PM
Coulson dying was lame motivation for the Avengers to band together and then bringing him back was lame because Clark Gregg can't carry a show.
Scarilian - 4/24/2014, 6:10 PM
You do realise what happens in 'The Infinity Gauntlet' right? EVERYONE DIES! The Avengers are slaughtered in arguably the biggest massacre of all time.

They'll kill off EVERY member in Avengers 3 except one character who will get the Gauntlet and reverse time and bring them back to life before they defeat Thanos.
batz11 - 4/24/2014, 6:10 PM
3 for Black Widow...how about 3 holes I'd happily invade?
Scarilian - 4/24/2014, 6:10 PM
So yeah... they're keeping a lot of the characters alive so they can kill them off for dramatic affect in Avengers 3.
