SPIDER-MAN Producers Claim We Won't See Anyone Other Than Peter Parker On Their Watch

Hoping to see Miles Morales, Ben Reilly or Miguel O'Hara on the big screen? Tough! The producers of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 talk about that, the crossover potential of their movies, why the Mary Jane scenes won't be on the Blu-ray, a possible return for a redesigned Lizard and much more!

"No," Avi Arad replied when The Playlist asked whether they had considered expanding the Spider-Man franchise by releasing movies focusing on some of the other characters to have held the Spider-Man mantle like Miles Morales, Ben Reilly or Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O'Hara. "The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today's world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don't know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man." That's disappointing news, and a little baffling, especially as there's serious franchise potential for each of them. There may still yet be hope though, as Tolmach added that could change when they're no longer overseeing the franchise.

The duo then went on to discuss how The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Sinister Six and Venom are "all going to converge in some way", with Arad adding: "Don't forget that Venom has Planet of the Symbiote. There's a lot of meat on this dark bone. And it all comes back to Spider-Man. So everything we are going to do, all the extensions, Spider-Man will always be there, the idea, even if he's off-screen, will be there." As for whether these plans could include a possible return for Rhys Ifans, Arad teased, "All I can tell you is that we've never had more of an opportunity, by establishing Oscorp as the station from which it's all coming. You can do a whole new vision of what the Lizard will look like next time." Oh, and talking of characters making a return, will we at least see Mary Jane Watson on the Blu-ray deleted scenes? "No," Tolmach confirmed. "Because it never made sense. It was never in a cut of the movie. It just didn't make sense."

On the plus side, Arad does at least have an inkling about how fans feel about his control over the Spider-Man franchise for Sony. "Go on Superhero Hype and you'll see 500 people who want me dead." Be sure to click on the link below to read the fascinating interview in full!

To Avi and Matt:

batman1216 - 4/30/2014, 2:22 PM
I totally agree with this. I have not and never will accept anyone else other than Peter Parker as Spider-man. As much as I love Batman, I can accept Dick, Tim or Damian taking over the mantle, but anyone other than Peter as Spider-man irks me to no end. Ultimate was my favorite book for years and after Peter died I just couldn't continue. Miles Morales has his supporters, but it just doesn't work for me.
HeroWithAThousandFaces - 4/30/2014, 2:22 PM
2099 would be a great cinematic experience.
GL - 4/30/2014, 2:23 PM
:-(((((( maybe one day when I'm old and on the verge of death
DrDoom - 4/30/2014, 2:23 PM
They want you dead for a very good reason, Mr. Arad.
HellsHammer - 4/30/2014, 2:23 PM
Good. Too early in the franchise to even consider anyone BUT Peter.
CaptainObvious - 4/30/2014, 2:24 PM
It's baffling that these two think they know what's best for Spider-Man.

If the superhero bubble ever does burst, this franchise will the first to fall.
CoulsonLives - 4/30/2014, 2:24 PM
Man, I wanted 2099... :(
rorywilliams - 4/30/2014, 2:25 PM
It's funny he talks about franchise integrity and withstanding the test of time when by all accounts the new Spider-Man movie sucks. Piss off, Arad.
kinghulk - 4/30/2014, 2:25 PM
avi arad sucks i want to see miles morales.
Nick56 - 4/30/2014, 2:26 PM
I'd honestly rather see a Spider-Man 2099 movie instead of Amazing Spider-Man sequels
GiantNerd - 4/30/2014, 2:27 PM
The title could use a second glance.
MrMartinMarvel - 4/30/2014, 2:27 PM
Not even Spidey 2099?
BatManiac - 4/30/2014, 2:27 PM
I like The Lizard's design, so there's no need to redesign him, in my opinion. If they do, I just hope it's better.

TheAbaryMan369 - 4/30/2014, 2:28 PM
[frick] you. I want 2099.

I'd imagine them making a Spider-Ham animated movie though.
JordanKing - 4/30/2014, 2:28 PM
I'm actually hating Avi Arad the more I hear from him.
CaptainObvious - 4/30/2014, 2:28 PM
Enjoy the success while you can, guys. It's all going to come crashing down soon.
QuestiontheAnswer - 4/30/2014, 2:28 PM
"No" I answered when asked whether I'm interested in this franchise.
JordanKing - 4/30/2014, 2:29 PM
He is the CBM fanboy wet-dream cockblocker.

Dear Avi Arad,
UltimateHunt - 4/30/2014, 2:29 PM
so dc gave us fantastic news thru a good period of time.
now sony (producers) is [frick]ing everything up,

who said we cant have peter and Ben Reilly in the same screen?

[frick] you sony
TheManFromMars - 4/30/2014, 2:31 PM
(Insert Michael Jackson eating popcorn gif here)
CoulsonLives - 4/30/2014, 2:31 PM
I like Webb, but Arad I think is the one behind all of the bad decisions.
anthonyEstark - 4/30/2014, 2:32 PM
Well, I hope "their watch" goes away, because I want to see at least Miles Morales.
JatevinM - 4/30/2014, 2:32 PM
Avi Arad just sounds stupid.
GliderMan - 4/30/2014, 2:32 PM
What do they mean Marvel tried it???!?

Also I agree with this, except for Ben Reilly, they should use him.
Pending - 4/30/2014, 2:32 PM
Yep. This will slowly devolve into one of the worst superhero franchises of all time.
Visualiza - 4/30/2014, 2:33 PM
About the only thing these imbeciles have said recently that I can get behind.
ThrotTheUnclean - 4/30/2014, 2:34 PM
He can say whatever he wants. I have no faith in his ability to represent the Spider-Man world adequately on film. The only thing I believe he will do is stick with Peter Parker, because that is the only character they can get right. While I agree that it is the most important one, when you surround that character with nothing but shit you can never have a good film.
mr2324jgf - 4/30/2014, 2:35 PM
Josh Wilding is the biggest piece of shit hack on this website, take all of what you read from him with a big grain of salt.
TheManFromMars - 4/30/2014, 2:36 PM
@BatfleckReturns

Thank you, good sir.
KINGPEN266 - 4/30/2014, 2:37 PM
SMH awwww wellll back to marvel u for me
Chekkarma - 4/30/2014, 2:37 PM
Typo in the headline "that" should be than"....2099 would be amazing and seeing Peter pass the mantle would be awesome and fresh.Peter Parker will always be the iconic Spiderman but switching it up would keep many fans interested instead of the constant rehashing of the same old thing.
Pending - 4/30/2014, 2:37 PM
Sucks hearing about the deleted scenes. Was hoping somebody could do a fan-edit of what this movie was suppose to look like at some point, an MJ cut basically.
themidnightking - 4/30/2014, 2:38 PM
[frick] you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Superior - 4/30/2014, 2:38 PM
Arad, you don't get it. It's not always about what you do, it's about how you do it. Just because you lack the [frick]ing creativity to pull off many other Spider-Men just because of the past attempts, doesn't mean it's impossible. You guys at Sony want your [frick]ing Spidey-verse so bad, but won't even take a few risks and liberties in order to expand on it. You're gonna try to expand the universe with villains but not use the other versions of Spidey? Pshhh.. bullshit. And that's uninspiring making all of his villains come from [frick]ing Oscorp. Pathetic.
cwarrior - 4/30/2014, 2:39 PM
You know some of you are claiming to have 0 interest in this spidey franchise
I think some of you are lying to yourselves negative or not you're showing it and in complete denial and continue to keep coming back to articles for this movie and its future
TheManFromMars - 4/30/2014, 2:40 PM
@cwarrior

I come to the articles for the comments.
MrPrime - 4/30/2014, 2:40 PM
Come to think of it, I think I know like man of steel more than TASM 2. THe reboot series has really been underwhelming so I doubt anything more up their sleeve will impress me unless they don't spoil it in 4 minute trailers.

You can only use peter parker so many times before it gets stale so you then will have to re invent the character over and over again. Might as well move on. You could bring up the batman argument but for me every Bruce Wayne has been fresh and had a different take on the character.
