BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Takes $35.5M On Friday; $90+M Weekend Expected

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took a little less than expected yesterday, but it's believed that the Marc Webb helmed sequel will still earn upwards of $90 million this weekend. However, that all depends on how well it does today, and its debut in China could ultimately prove to be far more important...

We have a box office update on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for you today, with a confirmed Friday haul of $35.5 million. That puts it on track for a weekend debut of anywhere between $90 million to $92 million, with $94+ million possible depending on whether moviegoers flock to go and see it today. Sony are apparently quite anxious to see how well the sequel performs, especially with a long running time and a whopping budget of $225 million (as well as around $190 million spent on marketing). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has only two weekends to make a mark in North America before Godzilla stomps into theaters. It's difficult to compare The Amazing Spider-Man's debut with this follow-up as the reboot opened ahead of the July 4th holiday. In 2002, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man opened to $114.8 million on the same May weekend and ended up with $403.7 million in total compared to The Amazing Spider-Man's $262 million. However, all eyes are on China where the sequel opens tomorrow. With so much spent on the sequel, the studio are hoping that it can make its numbers up overseas in order to at least gross the same worldwide as 2012's instalment.

So many Marvelites will have their heart broken this weekend.............
LEEE777 - 5/3/2014, 7:40 AM
They still should have called it ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN!

ULTIMATE Amazing Spider Man2 Banner

Because that's basically what Webb's Universe is! :P
Transforminator - 5/3/2014, 7:40 AM
Shit movie.
Abary - 5/3/2014, 7:42 AM
I'm seeing it in a few hours. I don't go to the theater often since the closest one in two hours away...
TheRationalNerd - 5/3/2014, 7:47 AM
I just love it how that voice over in the trailer/tv spot says...

bobevanz - 5/3/2014, 7:47 AM
Not shit
charlie2094 - 5/3/2014, 7:48 AM
Enjoyed the film, but was incredibly flawed...

Disappointing it won't manage $100m, did previously think this was a possible $1 Billion film, but could maybe be the lowest grossing Spidey at the domestic, progressively gotten smaller. Still do amazing at the foreign...somewhere between $750-$850 once finished
TheRationalNerd - 5/3/2014, 7:52 AM

Yeah I said the same. I think spidey will come very close to 800 million after it hits the foreign markets but I think Transformers has the better shot of grabbing 1billion. It all depends on how well they advertise it and promote it. It's going to be a huge summer for sure.
McNyagano - 5/3/2014, 7:54 AM
Wait it's gonna open less than Cap 2? What?:o

Nick: “Looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain."

bobevanz - 5/3/2014, 7:56 AM
Releasing this after the masterpiece of cap 2 really changed peoples opinions on cbm's. It was great, but nowhere near the level of cap 2.
SuperCat - 5/3/2014, 7:57 AM
Haven't had a chance to see this yet :(
MediaMan - 5/3/2014, 8:00 AM
The best comparison is really how TASM2 compares to TASM, and it's going to be 30% ahead on opening weekend. That's very good. Cap was an unusually high opening (for a Cap movie), but that's because it was an unusually good movie. TASM2 is splitting audiences - many love it, many don't. Haven't seen it yet myself...
McNyagano - 5/3/2014, 8:00 AM

Where did you read that?
BruceLeroy - 5/3/2014, 8:03 AM
How exactly is TASM2 doing better financially than CAP2 supposed to break hearts @JoeMomma29 ? I'm really not understanding your logic.
thing94 - 5/3/2014, 8:03 AM
I was 50/50 on it. I don't enjoy Garfield's Peter, I just don't. He's too jittery, can't talk straight without mumbling, and too hipster. Give me the classic Peter that shined from the 60s to the 90s.

Goblin was scary and I look forward to him in the next films.

At this point I'm just looking forward to seeing the villains. That's pretty sad, when you don't like the hero.

But hell, it's all about the villains sometimes.

yonny616 - 5/3/2014, 8:04 AM
@McN Actually Iron Man is giving the orders now, but Cap seems to be a close second. lol
astromerc - 5/3/2014, 8:05 AM
So yeah I saw it...meh too jokey and way too much Pete and Gwen. Everything was cliche.
GinjaNinja - 5/3/2014, 8:05 AM
Of course it will make more than cap, its spiderman... A list vs B list. hope its good, cn't go this weekend, but will next weekend hopefully.
KrazyForKomix - 5/3/2014, 8:06 AM
@ JoeMomma29

um . . . why?
sjoerdo0 - 5/3/2014, 8:06 AM
Best spiderman movie i know.
kalelhawj - 5/3/2014, 8:08 AM
An amazing and emotional movie... Right there with spidy 2. Credit has no idea what a good movie is...
Mashpataters - 5/3/2014, 8:10 AM
The movie is not as bad as everyone has been saying. It IS convoluted and their are more than a few awkward scenes, but overall it has a good 1st act, a mediocre and confused second act and a great, and i mean great, final act. If you are a fan of spidey and don't mind a little extra fat and cheese, it's worth the ride. 7/10 for me.
McNyagano - 5/3/2014, 8:10 AM

Because trolls gonna troll. He admitted to being a troll, don't hold anything he posts with much credence.

True lol;) I just had to use that line, fits in perfectly with the situation happening here xD
charlie2094 - 5/3/2014, 8:10 AM

Definitely think Transformers has a shot, could easily be a $1 Billion film for sure.

Should manage the same amount as TASM1 made...still no where close to the originals. Even though I somewhat enjoyed the film, definitely a mess. A lot of the stuff just screamed studio interference, akin to Venom in Spidey 3...hopefully it's only up from here.

BlinkyStark - 5/3/2014, 8:12 AM
Pure cinematic garbage like Man of Steel

opened lower than Cap 2??

WOW SONY give the rights back to MARVEL you imbeciles!!
Super12 - 5/3/2014, 8:12 AM
This movie made me a MUCH bigger Spider-man fan. I'm starting to take back what I said about the reboot (too soon, unnecessary, too dark, etc). I LOVE this Spidey-verse their putting together. Really really fun and well put together movie.
McNyagano - 5/3/2014, 8:13 AM

Can't believe what I've just read -___-
XelCorp - 5/3/2014, 8:16 AM
Movie was [Frick]ing awesome. Haven't really seen anyone ExplaiN as to what their problem with this movie is.. Haven't really seen any ReaL complaints yet.
shamo - 5/3/2014, 8:17 AM
Best CBM of the year so far.
XelCorp - 5/3/2014, 8:18 AM
Has it been confirmed that the sinister six will show up in TASM 3?
ComicFan523 - 5/3/2014, 8:20 AM
To me this movie was more about Peter Parker than Spider-Man, which is fine. I think they're trying to portray him as something of a tortured soul. His uncle died because he didn't stop the killer from robbing that convenience store and now with what happened in this movie... Seems like his portrayal is pretty accurate with the comics for the most part.
XelCorp - 5/3/2014, 8:20 AM
Or are they being introduced in their own film first? I thought I read that somewhere. If they are in ASM3 then I suggest people start getting use to the whole ""too many things going on/too many characters"" thing
Mashpataters - 5/3/2014, 8:22 AM

the movie had a few flaws, some awkward/cheesy dialogue...and then the people that wanted to hate on the movie before they saw it took that as a confirming answer that it was complete horse-shit for some reason. that's how it always happens. It happened with Man of Steel too.

I agree with you though, I thought it was pretty great and the final act was absolutely spectacular.
XelCorp - 5/3/2014, 8:23 AM
@ComicFan523- Yeah, I think he is going to start taking things a little more seriously in the next one
MrCBM56 - 5/3/2014, 8:24 AM
Such a great film. I love it.
DoubleD - 5/3/2014, 8:25 AM
Going this afternoon ! CAN'T WAIT ! It's MARVEL so I know I will love it. I liked TASM with the Lizard. FUN FUN FUN movie. I know I will like this one too.
NightForce - 5/3/2014, 8:25 AM
Yeah this movie...Um
Ehhhhh. What can I say all of the cool shit was in the trailers. Boring slow ass joke of a movie.

No just no.
sjoerdo0 - 5/3/2014, 8:25 AM
If our god stan lee dies then marvel is no more its disney then so you get donald duck being captain america and stuff. I am happy that spider-man is in good hands of sony. True right or am i just a retard saying something that is really really weird ?
JamesMan - 5/3/2014, 8:25 AM
After seeing it last night I feel comfortable saying that Sony [frick]ing OWNED this film! This is one of the few times where I felt like I was watching a comic book on screen, I loved it! The action was fantastic, the actors perfect, the music was a damn standout, the CGI was gorgeous, and it had the perfect cinematography for a Spider-Man film (more so than any before it). The only negative I have is the Harry/Peter relationship wasn't established perfectly but it was still great!

Amazing Spider-Man 2: 4.5/5
Burkem6 - 5/3/2014, 8:25 AM
@Joemomma i usually don't comment on cbm i just like to read, but every article you show up talking about marvelites then you saw other people always troll first well you have the first comment, and you're already starting just chill with the bs.i've seen you be objective before go back to that.
