Box Office Buzz January 8 – 10
It’s no real surprise to see that Avatar has once again landed the number one spot on top of the weekend box office charts, but who’d have expected such a taking?

For the fourth week in a row James Cameron’s Avatar has absconded with top place on the US domestic box office charts. This isn’t a massive surprise, but the fact it only suffered a 26% drop from last week, grossing another $50 million is relatively impressive.
As a result, Avatar has jumped up to the second spot on all time worldwide grossing films, second only to Cameron’s previous box office killer, Titanic. So far, in just over four weeks, Avatar has earned $1,341 billion dollars. That puts it at just $500 million behind Titanic, and likely to pass it considering that Titanic was in theatres for around 40 weeks, leaving Avatar another 36 weeks.
Stepping away from Avatar, the second and third spots were held by Sherlock Holmes at number two and Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel at number three.
This week’s newcomers, Daybreakers, Leap Year and Youth in Revolt didn’t do so well, earning a total of $31 million between the three. They came in at spots number 4, 6 and 9 respectively.
