Thor Gets Emaciated For Ron Howard... Again

Ron Howard tweets picture of a severely emaciated (THOR star) Chris Hemsworth on the set of IN THE HEART OF THE SEA who has now pulled off a Christian Bale weight-loss and weight-gain routine twice in succession!

Christian Bale's weight loss and weight gain for THE MACHINIST and BATMAN BEGINS is celebrated by fans as the gold standard of physical transformation for cinema. But Chris Hemsworth seems to have done one better for his many roles off late.

Hemsworth got big and muscular for THE AVENGERS. But then had to slim down for Ron Howard's racing drama RUSH because otherwise he wouldn't fit into a racing car and those guys are much more lightly built than the He-Man like Thor. Next, he shot THOR: THE DARK WORLD which required a return to his Thor physique. And now currently he is shooting survival-at-sea story IN THE HEART OF THE SEA for Ron Howard again (about the true events that inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick) and this role has called for his most extreme transformation yet. You can see in the image below that Hemsworth is a far cry from his Thor proportions here, with narrow shoulders, a caved in chest, twiggy arms and a skinny face and waist.

How did he achieve it? A crash diet of 500 calories a day. Here's what he had to say about his diet on Jimmy Kimmel.
"A bunch of sailors in a whaling ship get struck by a whale, the ship sinks and they jump onto the small rafts and drift for 90 days. And basically they begin to die and eat each other ... And we have to get rather skinny. So we're on 500 or 600 calories a day... It's funny, you've never heard 15 big, burly guys playing sailors talk about their calorie-count, what they should and shouldn't eat... I mean, you can consume 600 calories in a milkshake... So it ends up being a couple of small salads, a couple of small pieces of protein and that's kind of it and you go to bed hungry. And then you have like a fasting period of 15 hours, like you stop eating completely, and then you have little meals through the day."

Next up for him? Muscling up yet again for THE AVENGERS: THE AGE OF ULTRON.

Wow I had no idea this story was being turned into a movie. I remember having to read it in school. Some of it will be hard to translate to film. Some is even a little boring because it was the persons account of what happened.

Spoiler Warning
There was a part in the book I Remember that there was four guys I believe it was in the small life raft and they had a gun. So they picked straws and the one with the smallest straw would get shot and they would eat him. The sad thing was there was cousins on the raft and the one got the small straw so his cousin shot him, then ate him.
End Spoiler

I believe this was the biggest tragedy at sea until the Titanic. If I remember that correctly. I do think it will be interesting to see on film. This is a really sad tale and shows what man will do to survive.

@BlackIceJoe: I would NEVER do that. We would just all have to die. What kind of life is that, having to remember that you shot and ate your cousin? What is your family going to be thinking, every time they see or hear from you?

"Oh, there goes that cannibal calling again. Don't answer the pone! He doesn't have a job, so he might be hungry and that mofo does not go hungry under ANY circumstances."

I think Hemsworth will kind of always be in this position. He is so huge and muscular for Thor that he will always have to slim down if he wants to get case for normal roles.

Anybody wanna guess his weight in that photo? Seems like 160 to me.

He was 180 for Rush and this is much further along that.

I'm sorry but it does not beat Bale's transformation between The Machinist and Batman Begins, that he did in a matter of months.

It's called steroids people, many actors take them under medical supervision. It's a common thing.

Chris is a naturally tall and lanky guy.

He's not naturally bulky, which is why he bitches about getting bulking up for THOR and how hard for him it is (that and because he wants more money).

It's probably easier for him to drop extreme amounts of weight than it is for him to add muscle mass.

But this kind of extreme dieting is extremely unhealthy.

Hanks, Bale, McConaughey all damaged their bodies and prematurely aged after they did this.

Hanks got an Oscar nomination for his weight loss.

McConaughey is surely going to get one his weight loss.

Maybe Hemsworth will also be lucky?

Alright Hemsworth.Filming for Avengers:Age Of Ultron starts in March. You better get in fighting shape by then.

He probably wont need to go around with a bare upper body in AoU. Plus some camera tricks.

It honestly surprises me how people are oblivious to HGH use in Hollywood. Actors take HGH when they need to bulk up for a role. Its their job. Gaining more than 5 pounds of muscle a month is physically impossible naturally. And 5lbs alone is really pushing it. It becomes obvious when actors are done filming, they get back down to the weight they were before.

Thomas Jane did it for The Punisher, Tom Hardy for Bane, Bale for Batman, Henry Cavill for Superman, Chris Pratt for Starlord, and so on...

Damn he toned down his body weight. Now that's amazing. This guy is definitely a dedicated actor and there's very few of those in Hollywood.
