"Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane"

Stop right there please.
Pasto
Pasto - 10/6/2015, 6:42 AM
That's like if someone was directing a Green Arrow film and said they were watching 'Arrow' for inspiration.

As much as I loved Ultimate Spider-Man there is a major issue.

In 10 years we never saw anyone grow in the comic. Peter was in High School when it started and in High School when it ended throughout 10 years. Hell in the 616, Stan had Peter in what? HS until Spidey #30 I think? He was the same as throughout the 10 years. Of course it's Bendis after all.

Also Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane?

Ugh.

I'm surprised you guys are surprised they are taking inspiration from ultimate. Thats where a good chunk of MCU stuff comes from. I mean i know TASM said they took stuff from ultimate, but lets face it, they took more from the spectacular spider-man tv show then they did from ultimate.

As for this news, eh, i could go either way, Spider-Man loves mary jane isn't awful, and i like aspects of ultimate, mainly the early stuff. I'm sure they will take some 616 stuff as well, so i'm not super worried. Well no more worried then i was with who is writing the movie. But that is a conversation for another time.

But @Pasto this is Marvel Studios. They can do no wrong.

They got Kevin Feige. The guy who doesn't director nor write any film in the MCU who's somehow someway to be the one to praise for all the MCU films if they succeed. Even though Feige almost destroyed the MCU in a single blow but shipping Zak Penn's (writer of Elektra and X-Men The Last Stand) Avengers script to director that Whedon said the scirpt was basically dogshit.

Marvel Studios is fine. They know what they are doing. There Spidey will be better then any of the previous Spideys simiply because it's in the MCU even though none of the MCU films hold a candle or come close to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 which Feige himself admitted.

To make sure we got a great Spidey film, Feige hired the best people in charge. He hired the writers of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 (which wasn't better than 1 which oh Lord and Miller wrote), Horrible Bosses (which while ok isn't known for it's writing but for the cast involved), Horrible Bosses 2 (which was dogshit), The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (remember how great that film was....), and recent the John Hughes inspired Vacation which has a 28% on RT and Jeremy Jahns proclaimed as dogshit.

But we got a director who's just like Marc Webb. He has done 1 film that was released in theaters that was positively received. Now he's doing Spidey.

They pushed back half of Phrase 3 for this Spidey film being written by top men who nobody can defend and when they do defend the writers or director; they say trust Feige. No disrespect to Feige since he's great but I don't put faith in someone who I have never met or will never met and since he won't be writing and directing the film.

But it's completely fine. I mean hell Sony's got that animated Spidey film. Yea its written by Lord and Miller and produced by Tom Rothman (guy who's the reason Fox Daredevil sucked, Galactus was a cloud, Brett Ratner directing X3, didn't want sentinels in X-Men films, and never wanted to greenlight a Deadpool film).

That awkward moment you realize Tom Rothman, the guy is the reason Fox and Marvel have bad blood, is producing a better Spidey film then Kevin Feige.

Oooooh boy.

Watts I just hope to God you've been watching this in-between setting up the plot:

Man... you do make some very very valid points. Can't argue with those.

Also... why thehell is people complaining about the movie being based on Ultimate Spider-man? I mean, seriously... USM was for years way better than the 616 Spider-man stuff (hey, remember Morlun and all that totemic shit? Oh, remember One More Day/Brand New Day? Or all the shit-fest that came after that??)

Spidey 2 will definitely be that May 2020 date. He will be the face of the MCU soon.

I wish Spidey had quality writers.

Exactly. For most of the 21st century, Ultimate Spiderman has been the go to comic series for Spiderman. I've liked handful of stories here and there from Spiderman in 616 like Spiderman Blue, but shit like Sins Past, Other, and of course OMD have killed all my interest in 616 Spiderman. And while we're at it, I feel when it comes to Spidey's Highschool life, Ultimate is the way to go. For 616, it was really Peter's college life that was the highlight.

@Quick1029

and what's wrong with that? As far as I'm concerned, we've yet to actually get MJ on the big screen. No, the character Dunst was playing was not Mary Jane.

@Ramiel

I think Guardians 3 is going to be in that May 2020 spot. I still don't think Marvel will sacrifice a prime May spot for Sony, even if it's Spiderman.
BlackPhillip
BlackPhillip - 10/9/2015, 9:26 PM
If they wanted a John Hughes vibe, why didn't they try to hire Chris Columbus?

TASM3 originally had a May spot, which Marvel gave to them.

Spidey 2 isn't one of the 2020 dates because those were all announced as part of the Disney schedule.

Despite being in the MCU, Spider-Man films are still released by Sony, and therefor NOT considered part of the Disney schedule.

Hahaha, yeah, no. Cap 2 blows every Spider-Man movie out of the park.

Ultimate comic I just knew it but I think they should be looking at old school spider-man comics like amazing spider-man issue #33.

@Franshu I actually liked the totem stuff. I felt it gave him an interesting Doctor Strange-ish aspect that opened up dealing with more supernatural villains. Also, the whole Totem thing itself actually ended with Peter ultimately not caring whether his bite was pure science or if something supernatural had been involved to nudge it along. In the end, he realized he was who he was and what he has done, what he has accomplished, the people he has helped is what mattered more than whether or not the spider was sent by a god to bestow some radioactive powers on him. In some ways it made him similar to Moon Knight, though without the constant communication with the totem god. I'm not sure the totem god ever even wanted Peter to know there'd been supernatural involvement in his origin. Like Peter was to be his avatar/ his chosen knight, but Peter was also supposed to become this from his own decisions, his choices and experiences and not because anyone told him to. Besides, Ezekiel is a much better spider-powered character introduced than Silk will ever be.

For as many faults as there were in some places, and some of the horrible editorial derailments to some stories (Sins Past) JMS run was maybe the last really good Spider-Man run to me.

And while I dislike pretty much everything Bendis excretes currently and of the past few years, I did really like the early days of Ultimate Spider-Man. Everything save for his stupid Hulk-Goblin characters was great for it's time. I even enjoyed his rendition of Clone Saga. But the closer it got to Ultimatum the less I enjoyed it. Not even The Beetle's cool utlimate design could get me to stick by that point.

Look, we can all agree that the Ultimate line went off the rails in spectacularly disastrous fashion, but Ultimate Spider-Man is exactly what this movie should feel like.

I love Spiderman 2, but there's a lot of silly stuff in that movie looking back. that hospital kill scene was jarring and out of place, o yeah, and Dunst's character was unbearable to watch.

I love both, but I'm giving the edge to Winter Solcier.

i think people might be reading a little too much into this (like people always do...with everything). I'm pretty sure he said he likes the ultimates because it was based around him in his high school days, where half of it was high school and relationship struggles, etc. and the other half was his super hero life. which, from what we've heard, is what the new series will be like. outline of the ultimates similarly outlines the concept of the new series, therefore he likes the ultimates approach. same reason why he said he liked the spider-man loves mary jane series, because it was about their relationship (and he liked the art style). i don't think that means theyre going to automatically adapt stories straight from the ultimates. I'm sure he's reading a little of everything.

also, i don't know why people freak out about him only directing 1 movie. to me it doesn't matter, they're all professionals. he's been in film school, he directed a movie with kevin bacon, these guys know how to direct. and its not like they write the script, which to me is the most important thing. he just needs a vision and how to capture it all on film. marc webb, even if you didnt like his vision, only directed music videos and 1 romance movie, yet could still create those insane battle scenes. its not like webb wrote the 2 movies. james gunn was pretty unknown too right? gotta make your start somewhere. jon favreau directed ironman and people loved it.

I have some of those Spider-Man loves Mary Jane comics. And Gwen Stacy is in fact in that comic. By the way, Gwen, Liz,Harry and Flash were all major cast for the comic along with Peter/Spidey and MJ.

Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane was a really fun comic, and I was pretty skeptical before I read it. But it did a good job of portraying that teenaged angst, without being overly melodramatic about it.

But yea, someone needs to make sure Watts watches the entire Spectacular Spider-Man series. They handled the high school relationshippy stuff REALLY well, along with everything else

I'm okay with this. As long as they don't look to Ultimate Mysterio for any inspiration.

That shit can burn.
