Tom Holland Talks About His SPIDER-MAN Preparation, Favorite Comic, & That 'Peter Parker' Photo
Well, it's been officially confirmed that Marvel's most popular superhero, Spider-Man, will definitely make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Now, we have a ton of new details on how Tom Holland is preparing for the role, his favorite comics, and a lot more! Come check it out!
After months of speculation (and more than a handful of confirmations), Entertainment Weekly finally told the world what they wanted to hear yesterday - that Spider-Man will indeed make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War.
In a recent interview with Collider, Holland spoke at length about his preparation for the role of a lifetime. When asked about his more than impressive backflipping skills, which many of you may have seen posted on his personal Instagram, he admitted that it was a skill he developed long before landing the Spidey job: "I used to be in a show in London called Billy Elliot, so I was one of the young kids in that, and that’s just one of the skills I learned from there really. And I’ve just sort of continued on with it and tried to excel, and it’s gonna help me a lot I think when we come to shooting Spider-Man."
There's been a lot of talk about which line of comics Marvel Studios, Sony Pictures, & Jon Watts, John Francis Daley, & Jonathan M. Goldstein may use as inspiration for their new interpretation of Spider-Man with the Ultimate line of comics seemingly the most likely candidate. Holland more or less confirmed the fact when he shared his favorite comic at the moment, which is, of course, Ultimate Spider-Man:
“There’s lots of things I didn’t know about him. I mean, there’s so many different versions of his story, and my favorite of which at the moment is the Ultimate Spider-Man. And the one thing I’m really excited about is that he’s not a superhero that’s on his own, you know? He has connections with some of the most powerful people in this Marvel Universe so I’m quite excited to explore that and see if Marvel will go down that route, you know? Which I’m sure they will. I mean, if they’ve got all these incredible characters at hand, I mean, why not use them, you know?”
As for that recent photo of Holland that set the internet on fire where he was trying to emulate Johnny Depp's early '90s look, but instead found himself looking a lot more like Peter Parker ripped straight out of the comics. Was that intentional? According to Holland, not at all. He was actually completely unaware of the similarities until fans starting tweeting him nonstop. Here's his explanation: “But you know what? That was so innocent though! I did not know that I was doing that. Afterwards I was kind of like, ‘Yeah, that is kind of Spider-Man hair.’ I’d just watched Edward Scissorhands again and I sort of looked up Johnny Depp, I was like, ‘Oh, he’s so cool. I’m gonna try to copy his hairstyle,’ and everyone went crazy saying I looked like Peter Parker, which I guess is a good thing. But that is not my hairstyle right now.”
