UPDATE: Is A New 3-D Star Wars Trilogy On The Horizon?

The good people at marketsaw.blogspot.com think so! Wait until you find out who is rumored to direct?
This from Marketsaw:

"Here is a strong rumor that should wet your appetites! (or sour them if you have had too much of the franchise). I have been hearing rumblings... extremely quiet at first, but now heating up significantly and from a trusted source - that George Lucas is preparing to unleash another STAR WARS trilogy upon us, this time in stereoscopic 3D. This is NOT the TV series, these are brand spankin' new 3D STAR WARS movies."

Music to my ears! If this becomes true then I really hope Lucas goes with a current story featuring Luke, Han, Leia, Chewey and the rest of the gang. I want to see the Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. That would be epic to watch up on the big screen in 3-D.

More from Marketsaw:

"What an interesting competitive box office landscape that would make over the next 6 to 10 years! James Cameron's AVATAR world vs. George Lucas' STAR WARS world. I could see Lucas getting a little jealous over a successful launch of AVATAR - jealous because it is a fully articulated universe, like his. And if he doesn't act on it - his franchise may well be relegated to a back seat as potentially the records will start falling to Pandora. Heck STAR WARS is still not 3D yet and what better way to try to maintain a lock on bragging rights than to launch into three more in native stereoscopic 3D."

So it sounds like Lucas is waiting to see how well James Cameron's Avatar will do at the box office before he starts running with this new idea. That's fair, but why does Lucas give a damn. George knows that to rekindle the Star Wars universe back into good standing's with the franchise's long term fans he has to deliver something good. Not something so so, and the whole movie cannot be a special effect.

Anyone want to guess who is rumored to be directing? Only Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola are rumored to be taking the director's chair with Lucas producing. I have said this many times before, stick with what your good at. Lucas is a writer and a producer NOT A DIRECTOR!!! I would love to see how a fresh Star Wars Trilogy would play out in the hands of Steven Spielberg. One word, Epic!

UPDATE: AICN sent an email asking the folks at Lucasfilms to confirm the new plans for a new 3-D Star Wars trilogy. Lucasfilm sent back a flat confirmation that they are not working on re releasing the original trilogy in a 3-D format or working on a new trilogy. This coming from the same people that denied that Ewan Mcgregor was in fact cast as Obi-Wan. I must have been out of my mind to think Lucas wanted to right a few of his wrongs out there in movie land. Instead it appears that he doesnt care what the fans want. Just what he wants, turning him into the Hollywood mogul/tyrant that he once hated and vowing to never become. At least there is hope. Star Trek and Avatar will keep reaching deeper in the pockets of George Lucas hopefully waking him up enough so that he can see the true nature of the force.

Yep, that's exactly what this franchise needs. More CGI
MultiPurposePoni - 10/22/2009, 8:11 AM
Multi@ lol....i dont think he needs to worry about Avatar more about how shit the last 3 were :)
teabag - 10/22/2009, 8:15 AM
Hey Multi, did you see my Hall Of Villains tour article? Just wondering. I mentioned your name in the article. Let me know if those pics are entered into the Halloween contest?

Star Wars: Boy I hope Lucas only produces, the guy can not draw the emotion from his actors. Empire and Return were my two favorite Star Wars flicks with Revenge of the sith coming in third place. George did not direct Empire or Return,,,go figure.
jman1977 - 10/22/2009, 8:15 AM
I think this could be great.

P.S. - Saw the Avatar action figures at Target yesterday...what pieces of crap. Made me think of that Small Soldiers movie from a few years back when all the action figures come to life. Ugh.
Bamf7 - 10/22/2009, 8:17 AM
@Jman - Good find!
Bamf7 - 10/22/2009, 8:17 AM
@jman: No buddy, I missed that one! Let me go find it
MultiPurposePoni - 10/22/2009, 8:19 AM
Thanks Bam
jman1977 - 10/22/2009, 8:20 AM
OH MY FORCE !!!!! IS THAT TRUE ???? SWEET !!!!!!!!
Denn1s - 10/22/2009, 8:20 AM
Yeah when Lucus directs it all goes wrong...im sure the success of Star Trek has nothing to do with this either :)
teabag - 10/22/2009, 8:21 AM
@jman: Costumes look great! Could you do me a favor and email me the high res pics with the user names of the guys in costumes?

cbmcostumecontest2009@gmail.com

@teabag: Go check out the Cap costume article, we found a new possible Cap actor!
MultiPurposePoni - 10/22/2009, 8:23 AM
good point Tea. There were so many problems with the most recent trilogy that Lucas probably feels that he needs to do something to re spark interest in Star Wars. With Star Trek and Avatar tearing up the box office George is probably saying "Hey, what about my 45 percent market share from the sci fi communtiy?" Umm well sir, the last trilogy had Binks in it as comic relief??? And you killed the best villain Star Wars has had in years in the first episode only to replace him with some old fart named count dooku? And the ships of the past look better then the ships of the future,, and,,,oh you get the point!!
jman1977 - 10/22/2009, 8:25 AM
I have been for saying for many years that they need to do a post Episode 6 series.

There is so much fertile ground for great story telling, it would be a shame not to. But Lucas just NEEDS to find someone else to write it.

Of course they can't possibly top the chemistry and charisma of the original principal cast. And it's also not very likely the CGI will measure up the the brilliantly shot quirky, beleiveable special effects used in the past. But it never hurts to try I guess.

I would like to see the old boy repair his legacy a little bit. But he will have to pop that bubble he lives in a bit and listen to some other perspectives besides his own.

DarthMulder - 10/22/2009, 8:28 AM
I thought that they were gonna release the original trilogy in 3D, not some new picture.

It doesn't really matter though, because even if they do make a new STAR WARS film, and even if said film is totally AWESOME; jaded, pretentious, A-HOLE fanboys will STILL find fault with it.

If Lucas is worried about pleasing fans he should just forget it. NO MATTER WHAT he does with the STAR WARS films fanboys will whine and complain and say "what I would have done is this..." or "I would've cast this person..." or "My lame fanfic with multiple misspellings, grammar errors, and disjointed, incomprehensible plot is way better than this".

Give up George. You can't win.
gibbyblaylock - 10/22/2009, 8:29 AM
hehehehe yeah Jman the prob with Lucus is he has great visual flare but has no soul.....even a new hope was souless compared to Empire and Jedi, and Darth Maul could of been his new Vader like you say :)

Multi@ checking him out :)
teabag - 10/22/2009, 8:30 AM
If Lucas wanted to spark interest in Star Wars again, he should do a syndicated tv mini series. there are so many good story lines to use:

Jedi Academy
Tales of the Bounty Hunters
The Old Republic
Shadows of the Empire
MultiPurposePoni - 10/22/2009, 8:30 AM
If Spielberg is in full control, this will be epic! I think we remember what happen last time Lucas got to help...

BmanHall - 10/22/2009, 8:32 AM
Am I the only one who doesn't think this is a good idea?
Michael Galusick - 10/22/2009, 8:38 AM
this fits w/ peter mayhew having eps 7, 8, and 9 in his contract and mark hammil saying something about it when ep 3 came out, however, there was talk of releasing the 6 that are out in 3D but maybe they'll pull a toy story.

also newsflazh multi purpose (insert living under rock joke here), the star wars live action tv serie goes into production next year. they're writing it now and it takes place between eps 3 and 4. boba fett and will be a big part of it.
deathmetalbrian - 10/22/2009, 8:38 AM
Well this is much better news!!!

So this CGI or LIVE???

3D is the future of movies! I still want him to hurry up an get the Live series going, but this is wayyy cool!

One day hopefully we'll get them EPISODES 7, 8 & 9 TRILOGY!!!!

LEEE777 - 10/22/2009, 8:41 AM
This wont happen, he will release the original films in 3D.
Star Wars VII-IX has been rumoured for years but lets face it, the books and comics, and games have covered all that, and are mostly regarded as canonical.
Carrie Fisher et al have aged, and Mark Hamill has stated he wishes he wasnt so associated with Luke. Fair enough, theres all the areas the books havent covered, but for a new audience (unfamiliar with the books), it would be difficult to jump so many years in the future.
And he wont film any of the books, I dont see that happening.
Hell though, if someone wanted to do a CGI film of the Hand of Thrawn triology, Id be just as happy to see it.
Cant we just just leave Star Wars alone?
invalensname - 10/22/2009, 8:42 AM
On a higher note Gibbyblaylock is in a good mood :)

LEEE@ you make me laugh....you dont want someone else playing Mad Max but your happy for other people to play the original Star Wars characters lol :P
teabag - 10/22/2009, 8:42 AM
@death: You call THAT a newsflash? They've been saying that for YEARS. Has anyone been cast? Who's directing? What station will it air on?

THOSE are newsflashes. You're just repeating the same bullsh*t we've all heard over and over again.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/22/2009, 8:43 AM
@ mulder

the funny thing is there are already 3 stories that take place after "Jedi" originally lucas had 9 episodes. i really hope this is episodes 7 8 and 9!
CorndogBurglar - 10/22/2009, 8:48 AM
TEA @ Its STAR WARS and MAD MAX is kinda crap anyway! ; D

FOOD TIME!!! : P
LEEE777 - 10/22/2009, 8:51 AM
@ multi, sandsweet announced about 2 months ago that the writing for the first season has commenced and there will be casing announcements after the new year. now lets hug it out.
deathmetalbrian - 10/22/2009, 8:52 AM
I say old JEDI MASTER as MARK HAMILL!!!
LEEE777 - 10/22/2009, 8:54 AM
could be good if done right :D
ComicFreak11 - 10/22/2009, 8:57 AM
"I really hope Lucas goes with a currant story featuring Luke, Han, Leia, Chewey and the rest of the gang."

You want the story to be about currants? Or just current.
ToxinSuomi - 10/22/2009, 9:00 AM
LEEE@ My prediction......

:P
teabag - 10/22/2009, 9:02 AM

lol
teabag - 10/22/2009, 9:10 AM
Hopefully it'll be 7, 8 and 9!!!
ElBicho - 10/22/2009, 9:11 AM
"I really hope Lucas goes with a currant story featuring Luke, Han, Leia, Chewey and the rest of the gang."

Without the original cast/characters I have no interest, and considering Harrison Ford didn't even want to be in Jedi and time has not been kind to Carrie Fisher, I'm not holding my breath. I could see Hamill as a master, but I'd want him kicking ass, not spouting zen philosphy.
JohnnyKrypton - 10/22/2009, 9:11 AM
This Death Star hath sailed. Give it a rest Lucas Skywalker.
Betty - 10/22/2009, 9:15 AM
ugh 3-D is such a gimmick .. which is perfect for Lucas since gimmicks are all he has left.
DylansMyDog - 10/22/2009, 9:15 AM
@Betty: Go check out peterparker and Jman's entrie at the contest page :)
MultiPurposePoni - 10/22/2009, 9:18 AM

:P
teabag - 10/22/2009, 9:18 AM
I wish they would go with a well acted serious tone. The prequels should have had the epic feel that Lord of the Rings had. I don't care for the 3-D format, I just want an epic three hour Star Wars movie. I'd love to see Knights of the Old Republic as a movie.
ASSASSIN666 - 10/22/2009, 9:23 AM
Gearge lucas raped our childhood!
wards - 10/22/2009, 9:26 AM
@Assassin666- That would be great. And I agree with what you said about the prequels. Ha, could not imagine a Jar-Jar Binks type character in LOTR!
invalensname - 10/22/2009, 9:29 AM
it's not happening dammit. Lucas has said over and over that STAR WARS is all about the story of the Skywalkers. A 3-D redo of the trilogies is one thing, but he's not going to make a brand new trilogy just for shits.

end.
1Rocketeer - 10/22/2009, 9:32 AM
1Rocketeer@ It sure felt like he did the last three for shits..lol :P

STAR WARS NEW TRILOGY -1,-2, and -3!!

ClintEastwood - 10/22/2009, 9:54 AM
No 3-D. I'm getting tired of this crap. All Lucas keeps doing is messing up the original trilogy. First Greedo shoots first, and now this. Why does he keep changing whats perfect for a quick buck. Its no surprise that he directs movies like every ten years. He spends that time, trying to find cheap disgraceful ways to get more money. I'm still waiting on the day that i will see the original trilogy on TV, and not some special edition, fake cgi crap. Damn you Lucas, you've fallen into the traps of Hollywood greed.
supermarioworldE - 10/22/2009, 10:05 AM
@ Corndogburgler. Very true sir. I am aware of that. I am quite familiar with the mythos as continued by Timothy Zahn and others. Hopefully they will draw on that stuff.

Being a Sith Lord myself, naturally I long to see Luke dabble in the Dark Side LOL
DarthMulder - 10/22/2009, 10:27 AM
I doubt we'll see a new trilogy, however with lucas you never know.
thwhtGuardian - 10/22/2009, 10:31 AM
3-D is stupid and unoriginal, its been done to death, after Avatar and Toy Story 3-D leave it ALONEEE! I would say the same about the star Wars franchise but the thought of episodes 7, 8 and 9 are kind of interesting. And if they do end up making those movies they better be like the originals none of thsi boring as hell trilogy, I dont care if the federation is in intergalactic debt I just want to see spaceships blow up goddamnit!!!! lol. Seriously though they needa good enough story to do it, maybe follow on the lineage, the son of Luke. It makes sense since (in the timeline of the movies) the first trilogy (really the 2ND trilogy) was followed Anakin Skywalker, the 2nd one (or 1ST one) was about his son Luke and so the 3rd one would naturally be about Luke's kids. Just an idea. :)
Ryden - 10/22/2009, 10:33 AM
Wow you nerds honestly amaze me? You really still going with that the "New Trilogy" was an awful attempt? That was his idea back in the 70s.. And for the record I like Episode I more than the others!?.. ;)
Minotauro - 10/22/2009, 11:01 AM

knights of the old republic would be so cool!

Star Wars The NEW NEW TRILOGY -3,-2, and the stunning conclusion and beginning, -1!!!
ClintEastwood - 10/22/2009, 11:53 AM
STAR WARS IS DUMB.
ClintEastwood - 10/22/2009, 11:54 AM
I don't want to see a re-boot, or re-make, or re-anything. I want to see some new movies. Old Republic or Episode VII, VIII, & IX.
MIDAS - 10/22/2009, 12:02 PM
Minotauro--i am struggling to understand why someone who registered a profile, choose a juggernaut avatar and is posting texts on a comic book movie message board that exists for 'nerds' and 'fanatics' to obsess over the minutae of such matters would call anyone on such a thread a 'nerd.' it's a bit of a logical pretzel, you know?

that said, i don't neccessarily agree that lucas is intimidated by the potential box office hugeness of avatar. lucas gave birth to a multi-billion dollar media empire of such vastness that it has been one of the dominant mass cultural aesthetics in the last 30 years of worldwide media. avatar isn't exactly knocking on that door yet...nor, i suspect, will it ever be.

if lucas is going to feel challenged to outdo anything, it will be the supposedly cutting-edge special effects of avatar because no matter the impossible to top dominance of star wars, cutting edge is only cutting edge as long as it is current. i really hope lucas does these films...and i like CorndogBurglar's idea that it could be a knights of the old republic saga. i also really hope lucas does not go some horrid cg-animation route. that feels like a bit of a cop out to me.
inlovewiththeregencyelf - 10/22/2009, 12:09 PM
I don't want to see old charcters...I would like to see The " Legacy " story line. No JAR JAR...pleaaaaaaaaase
HeckYeah - 10/22/2009, 12:27 PM
a new knights of the old republic saga would be cool, not a rehash of what's been done just something completely new...either that or I'd like to see obiwan as a padwan, that'd be cool.
thwhtGuardian - 10/22/2009, 12:28 PM
lol @ Hulkout. Were you formerly known as clinteastwood?
DarthMulder - 10/22/2009, 1:22 PM
@ thwhtknight

i would actually love a movie of the first KOTOR game!!!!! it wouldn't be able to be exactly like the game, because in the game you make your choices and decide the outcome. so it would be fresh while still being the basic story!!!
CorndogBurglar - 10/22/2009, 1:32 PM
If they are going to do this, it needs to take place in a completely different time period with completely different characters.

...a trilogy set in the times of the Old Republic would be perfect IMO. In fact I wouldn't mind seeing a young Yoda as one of the main characters. That would be really cool, and it would help tie the two trilogies together.
Macksimus - 10/22/2009, 1:51 PM
If you believe this horsesh*t, you are very gullible.
slimybug - 10/22/2009, 2:52 PM
three more so are they going to keep the same cast?
flames809 - 10/22/2009, 2:58 PM
so they would be cgi characters then? i would buy it. anyway this is just a rumor but come on guys.. we all knew they would be made anyway.
grif - 10/22/2009, 3:26 PM
@ mulder

yeah man!!! i always thought it was cool that luke actually later goes to the dark side for a while. it would have been cool if he became the first jedi to wield both dark and light sides of the force while still maintaining his light nature.

but i guess the whole point of the light side is that you don't use your power to kill, so the dark side would kind of be useless if you can't choke and zap people to death
CorndogBurglar - 10/22/2009, 4:38 PM
You gotta embrace the Dark Side and choke that shit up

i would rather see kotor movies honestly.....
KheshireKat - 10/22/2009, 8:04 PM
Star Wars is not dumb. The prequel is not dumb. George Lucas cannot execute a film, is the problem. He assumed that children should be the main audience. He relied too heavily upon CGI for the surrounding elements, and his exposition of story is too truncated. Other than that, the films would have worked under another director. Part III was the best of the prequels, but it struggled to stay above water.
Phinehas - 10/22/2009, 11:29 PM
Prequel or sequel (all the stars are now old and the focus can be on the children), ANY of the Star Wars books are better than Lucas' hash. Zahn's stories are GREAT. It's certainly not the task that it was 10-20-30 years ago, with the CGI and all. Lucas can just produce. Would be cool, and a redemption.
bababoozer - 10/23/2009, 4:11 PM
@ mulder

lol, thats funny. did you know Sammy L told lucas that he wouldn't be mace windu unless he could have a purple lightsaber?? he wanted a lightsaber that no other character has ever had, so purple it was. lol, there's some trivia for ya!

i'm pretty sure i would have gone with black, or white or gold, but hey, purple is cool, right? right?
CorndogBurglar - 10/23/2009, 5:02 PM
@ phinehas

you're right! the prequel stories were not dumb. it was the way they were made, and how they were so kiddy and hokey and loaded with terrible acting. but that story could have been made into something great!

and was it just me, or was anakin a complete moron?? he believe anything anyone told him, lol. he got tricked by everyone like a dumbass
CorndogBurglar - 10/23/2009, 5:04 PM
Can you elaborate with some examples? Aside from Palpative of coarse. :)
