Roger Ebert Did Not Like Kick Ass

Although the movie going audience is loving it Roger Ebert perched up on top of his soap box and blew Kick Ass all to hell.

Which kinda stinks. I mean you have the most popular critic from the last 20 or 30 years damn a ComicBookMovie that you are geeked to see. This is why:

"Shall I have feelings, or should I pretend to be cool? Will I seem hopelessly square if I find “Kick-Ass” morally reprehensible and will I appear to have missed the point? Let's say you're a big fan of the original comic book, and you think the movie does it justice. You know what? You inhabit a world I am so very not interested in. A movie camera makes a record of whatever is placed in front of it, and in this case, it shows deadly carnage dished out by an 11-year-old girl, after which an adult man brutally hammers her to within an inch of her life. Blood everywhere. Now tell me all about the context."

Roger I think a lot of people have already pegged you as hopelessly square just from alot of the other reviews you have turned in. It's 2010, Hollywood is not known for originality anymore. The movies that they do put out have to be somewhat over the top or NO ONE will see it much less see it and complain. Yes thats right, if you go view a movie and hate it Hollywood does not care. They already got you to spend the money. Mission Accomplished.

From being somewhat of a movie critic myself I can say that I totally respect Ebert's opinion, but I do not agree with it. Kick Ass is not a movie for kids. Obviously. Which in critics minds (and everyone in Australia) already knocks it down a notch. Reason is because its a Super Hero movie about kids but no kids should see it. The cussing and the fight scenes are geared towards us grown ups which is fine. It is what it is. Not every ComicBookMovie should involve the kiddie factor or we will get watered down movies like 'The Phantom Menace' and charecters like Jar Jar Binks not once every 5 or 6 years but all the time.

So I say BRING IT. Kick Ass is going to be a Kick Ass flick and I cant wait to see Hit Girl up on the big screen Kicking Big Daddy's Ass, foul mouth and all. Other then the cussing it's what Spidey has suppose to been up to himself (smart ass factor was missing in all three Spidey flicks).

We will see you Sunday night at the Portage 16 IMAX Theater in Portage IN to screen Kick Ass and turn in our review for ComicBookMovie.

Kick-Ass is probably going to be one of those movies that's considered "critic-proof". The audience for this flick doesn't care what some guy that reeks of failed filmmaker thinks.

his face creeps me out O.o
1chris2 - 4/16/2010, 11:00 AM
he is kinda right. everything that hollywood put out is nonstop action,in 3d to get people to watch and then they do not care what you think because they have duped you and made their money, and thats why i do not go to the movies that often.
ecksmanfan - 4/16/2010, 11:01 AM
@jman- Good article and well said! People have an expectation now days that if a film includes any kind of "superhero" it must be for kids. That idea is quickly changing with films like Kick Ass, Defendor, and other lesser know comic book characters that are making their way to the big screen.

Roger Ebert is an effing moron that doesn't know a good movie when he sees it. He's one of those guys that enjoys Oscar winning movies that blow like MOnster's Ball and crap like that. If he says he doesn't like it, I generally will go and watch it and be thoroughly entertained. He's one of those guys that will be on his High Horse until the day he falls off and dies. Terrible critic and ignorant to what is really good. It's a shame that his ugly mugg and opinion had to be posted on this site.
Nightwing09 - 4/16/2010, 11:05 AM
Ebert can Kiss-My-Ass
lvlheaded - 4/16/2010, 11:05 AM
ebert is 67, firstly who expects someone that old to get it, secondly is that pic old or has he been hitting up the plastic surgeon like crazy
KEROSENE - 4/16/2010, 11:08 AM
saw it last night. faaaaaantastic. No this movie is not for children, it wasn't billed for children, nor should it be seen by them. I will say however, chloe moritz's performance was top notch. not just the violence and swearing, the actual performance and acting was spot on awesome. Robert Ebert hasn't put out a realistic review in years. the man (as respected as he once was) is out of touch. At some point you just have to realize that you're no longer the top of your game and can't keep up with the next generation. I will say that the movie won't win any oscars, but there was one point during the climax that i did in fact physically applaud.
mwkcope - 4/16/2010, 11:09 AM
Ryden@Firstly,Daredevil was good, but Spider-Man was better.Secondly, let the guy have his damn opinion.
crazyray - 4/16/2010, 11:11 AM
live in Chicago...that pic is old as hell... he doesnt have a lower jaw (or any sense of artistic merit... or effin' "entertainment" anymore). Screw him. And "Valley of the Dolls" sucked. There I said it. Go hype some art house dribbel.
SraFisher - 4/16/2010, 11:11 AM
shut up mwkcope
teebtime - 4/16/2010, 11:11 AM
i doubt that anyone who shells out the cheese to see kick ass in a theatre honestly cares what ebert thinks
xobten - 4/16/2010, 11:12 AM
Having seen the movie a couple of weeks ago I can honestly say, hand on heart IT ROCKS !!! Comic fans everywhere are and will love it.

Having said that and without being picky,Hit Girl kicking Big Daddys ass ???? jman, please, don't tell me you haven't read it yet ????
Brashlight - 4/16/2010, 11:15 AM
This is why i hate reading reviews on movies like this, and honestly i hate reading reviews by "film critics" at all. it seems to me like they just hate movies these days. Its like they go to movies with the mission to find whats wrong with it instead of just going to enjoy it. its pathetic. If you go to a movie trying to find the problems thats all your going to see. your not going to enjoy the movie at all. I hate critics, they are just so sad.
BmanHall - 4/16/2010, 11:17 AM
@ Tobuttica: Haha, whenever somebody mentions Monster's Ball does anyone remember ANYTHING other than Billy Bob pounding Halle Barry? XD
luffycapri - 4/16/2010, 11:19 AM
Me and my friends are going to see this today i hope its good, and not some over rated movie.

SraFisher - 4/16/2010, 11:27 AM
btw suprise suprise ebert rates yet another movie bad...this dude is garbage
CorndogBurglar - 4/16/2010, 11:27 AM
"I cant wait to see Hit Girl up on the big screen Kicking Big Daddy's Ass, foul mouth and all."

HUH?? lol...
HelaGood - 4/16/2010, 11:30 AM
i think he is paid by certain people to say certain things. if a studio wants a hit and knows they dont have one, they pay him to say its a good flick. hes done that many many times.

i also saw recently an old clip of gene siskel slamming 'ferris bueller' when it first came out. i think this is just another case of where the old farts dont understand the movie so they say its bad.

i never agree with his reviews anyway...
jman1977 - 4/16/2010, 11:34 AM
I have not read the Comic Book yet, I was going to go buy it this weekend but I dont want to ruin my movie experience. What do you guys think I should do? Get the book or wait to see the movie first. As an fyi guys I dont read any reviews or watch them and I try and stay away from the big spoilers of movies, plot points stuff like that. Info that there will be a cap and thor ref at the end of Iron Man is normal stuff, but I dont want others opinions to alter mine.
CorndogBurglar - 4/16/2010, 11:38 AM
@ jman

its up to you, from what i understand, the movie is pretty close to the comic, so its your choice. go into the movie knowing ahead of time what will happen, or not, lol.
teebtime - 4/16/2010, 11:40 AM
@jman1977- The books are incredible and I'm sure better than the movie(they always are) but if you read the books after seeing the film I don't think it would ruin the movie experience....at least initially. Keep in mind some things will no doubt be changed, whether large or small, to ease the transition into film. Either way at least you are planning on reading them. Millar is f***ing awesome. Check out Nemesis while you are there.

Macksimus - 4/16/2010, 11:44 AM
Ebert can go and jump in that volcano in Iceland...I'm going to go see "Kick Ass!"
RemiMartini - 4/16/2010, 11:44 AM
Roger Ebert is a dumbass with no jawbone. Siskel would've loved it!
SHAZAM171 - 4/16/2010, 11:48 AM
I never listened to him........ EVER!!! He is a pompous tight-@$$. So this critic's opinion means absolute 0 !!!!!! Move on.
YeaOkYea - 4/16/2010, 11:51 AM
'Kick-Ass' was KICK-ASS! The trailer definately doesn't give it justice. This is NOT a family movie. Gonna have to watch it again. Loved it! Oh & Hit-Girl was the shit!!! She stole every scene.
FoxForce5 - 4/16/2010, 11:51 AM
Roger Ebert also gave thumbs down to Lord of the Rings and said he just didn't get it. He also called the 70's, female revenge film, "Day of the Woman" a.k.a. "I Spit on Your Grave" the worst movie ever made, mostly cause he though the story of a woman who is horribly gang rapped by a group men then takes the power away from them by gruesomely murdering them, was somehow MEANT to encourage rape. Again, he often just doesn't get stuff.
thegreek - 4/16/2010, 11:52 AM
Never listen to him before won't start now .. [frick] u Ebert ... sack of shit...This movie will kick - ass and make a shit load of money asshole ...MAN i hate that guy .. Pompous asshole
Durast - 4/16/2010, 11:52 AM
@ lvlheaded & InterestingJohnHe The man survived throat cancer and can never eat again except through a feeding tube.

Anyways, like someone already has mentioned, he is but one critic. Read both reviews and the websites like this one that give a different side of the story and make your own educated decision about whether or not to spend the $10 to see the film. Every critic is different because they are giving their own OPINION hardly a unified decision except if the case of Gigli. Myself, I won't be seeing the movie since I am waiting for IM2 because they are opening too close together.

airbeyonder18 - 4/16/2010, 11:56 AM
You know how much I hate this guy? With a burning passion.
BmanHall - 4/16/2010, 11:56 AM
skidz - 4/16/2010, 11:56 AM
From a generational standpoint I can agree with him, I saw it last night and though it's awesome, this isn't the kind of movie I'm taking my parents too!
veylre - 4/16/2010, 11:57 AM
the only critic I dislike more than this moron is Leonard Maltin... both of these to nutsacs manage to display disdain for just about every movie I enjoy so...
Who gives a flip !!!
fanboiii - 4/16/2010, 12:03 PM
C'mon you guys are being way too disrespectful to a guy who deserves much more. You don't have to agree with his review, but just understand where he's coming from. Ebert and Phillips both rate the movie low based on their taste. Yes, they're a bit old fashioned and maybe too morally judgmental, but they do have a point. There will be people who will be very offended and not like the movie as a result. I think that's a fair reaction, but it's just not the same as mine.
OdinsBeard - 4/16/2010, 12:04 PM
i have a feeling a lot of people are going to feel the way Mr. Ebert does. first of all i really have no interest in watching kids in movies. even when i was 12 and episode 1 came out i was like really? they're having darth vader appear as some chubby kid? and now they're rebooting spider-man and its going to have some other dumbass kid in it. casting kids gets kids to go see your movie and no one else. adults don't want to watch kids who think they have real problems when really they don't know jack shit.
But kick-ass does look pretty hilarious! and hit-girl is totally going to steal the show. AND i think hollywood needs movies like this every 5-10 years. it's kill bill for the CBM generation.
But even that being said - i have no desire too see this movie in theatres. i definitely want to see it eventually but before long it will end up on the movie channels and i'll be able to catch it in the comfort of my own home. plus i dropped the book after two issues cuz i thought it was pretty stupid. i think it will make a better movie than a comic. plus i really can't stand JRJR's art.
Also every time i see a trailer come on for this movie everyone im with thinks it looks like shit. they haven't seen the red-band trailers. so while this movie does have a lot of marketing - i don't think it's being done right and the people that will be most excited to see this movie will be 13, 14, and 15 year-olds who can't get in.
OdinsBeard - 4/16/2010, 12:08 PM
Keven@ "roger ebert should lay off the fatty foods" is the title of a south park episode.

but i agree. jman puts himself on par with Roger Ebert, as if Roger Ebert gives a damn about his respect lol. "From being somewhat of a movie critic myself I can say that I totally respect Ebert's opinion" oh great! im sure he can die happy now. now you can continue to trash him but its ok! you respect him!

JMAN1977Insert: I didnt trash him in fact I said I respected his opinion. Most of yous guys should take a page out of that book. You cant blame me for all the other BS that spew out of peoples mouths. I surly did not call Ebert fat or make fun of his past battle with cancer. Really it's sad. I HAVE FAMILY THAT HAS DEALT WITH CANCER HEARTLESS PRICKS. Hey Odin I know I'm not a respected critic but at least I'm out there in a repected Theater chain trying, at least I'm not an arm chair critic who throws cheap insults and sly jabs on Monday morning after the game's over.
Growler - 4/16/2010, 12:12 PM
Ebert isn't paid by Fox by any chance, is he?

And anyway, this isn't a Hollywood flick, it's a British flick, made entirely independently by Vaughn's MARV Films.

P862010 - 4/16/2010, 12:13 PM
kind of weird since he praised watchmen don't they have similar themes ?
BmanHall - 4/16/2010, 12:15 PM
Everybody's a critic whether you label yourself as one or not. So he didn't like the movie. It doesn't bother me and it should bother anyone else. I simply don't care for the man's opinion. There's no need to make fun of the guy for it.
marvel72 - 4/16/2010, 12:17 PM
i don't give a shit if he didn't like it,I F***ING LOVE IT.
fanboiii - 4/16/2010, 12:17 PM
Yeah, the hostility against Ebert's opinion is a bad reflection on those who enjoyed the movie. It's almost making Ebert's point for him.

I actually like Ebert as a film critic because unlike most of the amateurs he doesn't just blurt out his opinions and act like it's fact. He let's you know what he's basing his opinions on and his viewpoint. The guy had done a lot for the film industry. Making fun of his cancer is just shamefully low.
GazelTGM - 4/16/2010, 12:24 PM
@fanboiii: You are absolutely right. You took the words out of my mouth.
Betty - 4/16/2010, 12:27 PM

scarecr0w13 - 4/16/2010, 12:32 PM
i am amazed a how horrible you people are. this guys a film critic and doesnt like a movie and you attack him about his cancer or weight just because he doesnt have the same opinion as you about a movie? the pathetic one is all of you, get over it. its gonna be a lonely sad life you lead if you attack everyone you doesnt agree with you. if you wanna be hate mongers, quick being fanboys and go join the tea party. im done with this site...
CrashTest - 4/16/2010, 12:35 PM
haven't seen the movie but I never cared much about his opinion since I never agreed with it. I think allot of these so called critics need to quit.I listen to the people the fans, the real critics.
