James Preston Rogers Makes His Case For Thor

We get to hear straight from the actors mouth on why he should play The God of Thunder.
Popdose.com had a sit down with Thor hopeful James Preston Rogers:

"Aside from the obvious (more leading man roles, prestige, etc.), what is it that draws you to the character of Thor? What makes you want to play him?

Thor is one of the most complete characters that I may ever play, being 6′6″. There’s more to him than, say, Conan or He-Man. His is a true character arc. Maybe as close as I’ll get to playing Hamlet, especially with Branagh attached to the project.

Because of your height and build, is it harder to get called in to read for “good guy” parts as opposed to “villain” roles?

Yeah, I don’t get many reads as the good guy. Strange, huh?

Say Marvel Studios calls you in for a read. They like you, they choose to hire you for Thor–but then Branagh says (for whatever reason) he wants you to take another six months of acting lessons to more fully ready yourself for the part during the film’s prep time. Would you be willing to follow his lead on this?

I’m a team player and would do whatever it took to make the best product possible. Believe me!

Bruce Lee, who was pretty much at the peak of human health during his career, once injured his back while weightlifting. How do you stay in shape without damaging yourself, and what advice do you give to lifters just starting out?

I stay in shape by lifting weights and staying active. For people just starting off, I say stay focused on your motivation. Accept it as a lifestyle. This time next year will come whether you go to the gym or not, but if you can get to the gym, your life will be a lot different this time next year.

You win the part of Thor, the movie’s a smash, and two days after opening, the following directors leave messages on your machine to come read for their next film: Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, James Cameron. Whose call do you take first, and why?

I’d go with Spielberg, ’cause that was the name I heard first as a kid.

You’ve been a bouncer, a member of the WWE and now an actor. What drew you into acting? What is YOUR passion about?

I enjoy being creative. The whole film and TV process I fell in love with right away. I just have a need to express myself, and this is a great outlet.

What kind of acting career do you ultimately envision for yourself? Are there certain roles you’d be less likely to want to try than others?

I think it would be a great career for me to be involved with period pieces (LotR, Braveheart, Outlander, etc.). I am big with long hair, muscles and look like a warrior. Plus I have a lot of training and experience with combat and weapons. Here’s where it gets interesting: I was a human before I was tall and big. I’ve loved, lost, laughed, cried, done it all. So I would love an opportunity to really showcase my skills and life experience, but a warrior would be a FUN career.

Many actors eventually find themselves drawn into the darker side of the profession: drugs, too much partying, and being convinced to raise 250,000 kids with Angelina Jolie. What’s your support system, and how do you intend to keep yourself grounded?

I have a great group of friends and family. I’ve also worked in the nightclub scene for many years and have seen first-hand what happens to people who don’t have their head on straight. I’m well and ready for this.

What’s an average “day off” for James Preston Rogers? How do you chill?

My days “off”? I don’t really have ‘em! I’d find my way to the gym, maybe lie in the sun. Invite my friends over for a BBQ. Play with my dog Deacon, a South African Boerboel.

Your promo video for yourself was great, but have you ever considered doing a mini-movie in full Thor regalia, such as the excellent fan films Grayson or Batman: Dead End in order to more fully cement your viability to play Thor?

It’s kinda funny how this whole thing started. The hardcore Thor fans found me and have put me out there. Then when asked the question by the media “Do you want to play Thor?” I said “yeah,” and away it went. The comedic Thor skit that’s on the internet was done at MTV Canada. They called me in to do the piece. Wasn’t my idea. I don’t want to be taken as a joke, this is how I make my living. I feel if I were to put out more little skits, I would be taken less seriously. When I’m looking for someone to look up to, those days are gone. Arnie and Sly are all grown up and no one has taken up the slack. I like to think I possess the skills to do that. What a great job that would be, huh?"

James Preston Rogers is a perfect fit. As long as he has the acting chops to play Thor he for sure has the look. Branagh wont let some ruddy poo yahoo get in there and "Thee and "Thou the movie to death. I would wait an additional 6 months to watch a blockbuster that has good, not just decent, but had good acting in it. Bring it ON.

thwip284 - 4/29/2009, 8:28 AM
God, more from this desperate mallet head! I spose i admire his tenacity, but doesnt he realize he has a head like a bag of spanners?

Im only joking James, im sure you would be a great Thor, now run along, theres a good boy;)
RorMachine - 4/29/2009, 8:33 AM
Dude... after reading this... i'd take "Pants down? They pretty much [frick]ing ass-raped us!" Paul "HHH" Levesque over this guy... and that's as low as i go. Still can't believe i said it... i feel all dirty now... and not kinky dirty either.

Jesus I'm so sick of hearing about HHH for every F-ing Super hero, I'm sure by tomorrow when I wake up ill see someone saying HHH should play the role of Black Panther. I cant see any true fan wanting to see the douche HHH play anything.

Yohon Kalic - 4/29/2009, 8:41 AM
What the hell are you talking about yohan kalic. What else have we wanted to see HHH in??
divo - 4/29/2009, 8:52 AM

wards - 4/29/2009, 9:00 AM
He could play sloth in a goonies remake

HuXli - 4/29/2009, 9:02 AM
hey you guys!
wards - 4/29/2009, 9:05 AM
I'm sure their are other Asgardians that this guy could play. But I don't think Thor is it.

I haven't heard anything about Odin. Who should play him?

I would like to see someone like Bryan Cox or Stellan Skarsgard
TucsonRican - 4/29/2009, 9:05 AM

@divo

Thor, Captain America, new star wars show, sabertooth, red sonja, just a few of the movies I heard people wanting him in, just go up to search and type in HHH, i'm sure it will bring up a few topics.

Yohon Kalic - 4/29/2009, 9:10 AM
@ Yohan Kalic & Shaman

Very true...this guy is tall and is big and has long blonde hair....thats it!! no REAL qualities as thor AT ALL ok i'll admit this guy does want it bad but as Shaman shed light on, would this guy stand out from the big idiot 'actors' like HHH? don think so..this guy is just made to b a dumb silent 'big guy' in films like HHH in blade trinity or that guy...whats his name who playes sabertooth in x1

lets get a real actor for thor nuff said
mutantJ - 4/29/2009, 9:17 AM
He's like the persistent little dweeb who cant take a hint when he's be turned down by the girl he's courting over and over again.
JamesH - 4/29/2009, 9:24 AM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@mutantJ
Whoa don't put me in that, I don't want this guy to be Thor, Ive had this convo already on the last post of him being Thor, I think he would care about the character more then most actors, but I really cant see anyone playing the bigger then life Thor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yohon Kalic - 4/29/2009, 9:26 AM
Can he act??? If he can act i say maybe, but really you need a actor with the acting calibur, oscar stuff to act out THOR, or it'll look like a joke!
LEEE777 - 4/29/2009, 9:40 AM
Yohon Kalic- Dude, if you didn't get my sarcasm in my thread, it would also explain why you don't get why mutantJ is putting you in the same boat as me. NEVER... and i'm sure everyone on here would testify... NEVER IN MY LIFE have i wanted an idiot dumb ass wrestler for any role (aside from Dwayne Johnson for Warpath). What i said was that this guy shown on top is even WORSE than the completely idiotic idea to have HHH as Thor.
Shaman - 4/29/2009, 9:51 AM
because realy THOR in a real life movie needs a very serious actor..one who can act out shakespear but yet looks strong enuff to kick hulk in the balls lool and i know thats why the casting is the hardest I personaly have seen because when we list the possible actors to play Thor they are either to small (ok i know you can bulk up but some people just geneticly cant get bug enuff no matter how much they pump out in gym or how many steriod injections they put in there arse)or they are big enuff like this James Preston Rogers hu is 'big enuff' but he looks and seems like he cant read a thomas the tak engine bokwitut busting a brain cell..oh yh and btw he wud need a bloody big helmet for that head SHHESH that guy can fit a whole other face on that forhead lool anyhu i just think the casting of thor is gunna take alot more time and consideration
mutantJ - 4/29/2009, 9:57 AM
@ Shaman

calm down mate maybe puttin u and Yohan in the same boat wernt a great idea...oh well as long as my point was made

oh yh and btw i just saw my spelling mitakes in my last comment lool i type to fast
mutantJ - 4/29/2009, 10:00 AM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@shaman
I wasnt tring to say you wanted HHH, just hate how people even think of him lol, as for mutantJ's post, I just misread it I guess, but yeah that was my real point. I dont want to see any wrestler for any super role, (aside from Dwayne Johnson for Black Adam.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yohon Kalic - 4/29/2009, 10:02 AM
Hmmm... a no name meathead? I dont think so. Stick to the gym, steroid user.
DarkAvengers - 4/29/2009, 10:04 AM
@ DarkAvengers I'm bigger than him and I'm not a steroid user. Gotta give him respect, he is very persistant. I think he needs to let it go. Brannagh has to much at steak to allow a D actor to be Thor.
SirPrize - 4/29/2009, 10:13 AM
Yeah ive always wanted THE ROCK as BLACK ADAM too!!! He fits so perfect! An man, he would also make a great WARPATH!!! CENA could make a great character not CAP or THOR though! But i watched MARINE and i thought he was really good in that as a action star!!! HELL YEAH, THOR needs a serious actor to play him!!! Anything less just wouldn't work or fit! @ SIRPRIZE @ I thought you was green an little lol! Heh heh!!! joking ; )
LEEE777 - 4/29/2009, 10:18 AM
I think you guys are being a bit unfair. Just because the guy is really big, doesn't mean he's stupid or cannot act. I mean, that's just being bigoted against big things... It's "bigthingsism". It's wrong.
adamant877 - 4/29/2009, 10:18 AM
adamant877 @ Like SirPrize said, MARVEL's got alot at stake with THOR! But i cant comment on the guy myself, have never seen him act, infact ive never seen him till now period lol! Has he been in a movie before???
LEEE777 - 4/29/2009, 10:21 AM
He played a norse warrior named Bjorn in "Outlander" with James Caviezel.

P.S. I wasn't being serious, this guy is as likely to get the role of Thor as I am to bed Megan Fox. I was trying to emulate that ridiculous Old Spice commercial. LOL
adamant877 - 4/29/2009, 10:24 AM
I havent seen anything he was in. I say give him a read!
shibazz - 4/29/2009, 10:44 AM
HE LOOKS THE PART, ALL BIG NAMES STARTED AS NO NAMES..
GUNSMITH - 4/29/2009, 10:58 AM
I say give him the part IF i get Megan Fox in bed :))
Shaman - 4/29/2009, 11:05 AM
omg you have to be kidding right this musclebond fat head wants to be the norse god of lighting. he might look like he could fit the part but his head is way to damn big and he looks like he might have taken too many steroids.
dogchasingcars - 4/29/2009, 11:07 AM
Shaman: Hey!!! I called first dibs!? lol
adamant877 - 4/29/2009, 11:16 AM
@shibazz--he was in outlander. When i saw it, before all this thor madness, i thought he might make a good thor. As the movie progressed, nah.

I think he should have a part as another asgardian. A warrior that wants to fill thors shoes (just like in real life). There is a heroic battle, thor wins. That would be cool eh? eh?

Outlander isnt that bad. It's like a really good scifi channel movie.
Betty - 4/29/2009, 12:06 PM
Well he does look like Thor but I think you guys are being way too harsh on the guy, I mean if nobody never gives him a shot at a REAL ROLE than how the heck does everyone here know he can't do it? The man has a dream and I dont think any of you all are big enough to make that decision. If he needs acting lessons than let him take acting lessons like every other human on the planet, nuff said.
Sortis - 4/29/2009, 12:21 PM
Hells yes...give the guy the part.

...and why do all of you comment on his face not being "pretty" enough????

This is freaking THOR...not some sissy looking pretty boy emo crap.

Macksimus - 4/29/2009, 12:44 PM
I don't know a thing about his acting, but looks wise he has my vote all the way!

And criticizing him for being muscular is just about as stupid as stupid gets.
If he can act he would be perfect
Juggernaut - 4/29/2009, 12:48 PM
OMG!!! Ive seen OUTLANDER, damn im gonna hav'ta check it out again lol! Thanx @ ADAMANT877 @ and @ BETTY @ I thought OUTLANDER was brilliant and original!!! Don't know why ppl don;t like it? It was friggin' cool!!! Infact everyone ive told watch it and love it!!!
LEEE777 - 4/29/2009, 12:57 PM
What is wrong with finding someone that looks like him for the role anyway? It seems like common sense to me.

let's see who's a good actor?? You could get Elijah Woods to play him. Or Mia Farrow. Or what about Micheal Cane? Mathew Broderick maybe?

As long as you guys don't care if the actor looks like Thor at all, then really just anybody could do it right?
Juggernaut - 4/29/2009, 1:04 PM
gotta give him props for trying! he's getting his name out there. He seems to be very passionate about the character! He doesn't need to be a leader like Cap. in fact He just really needs to be believable as a warrior god.
ManOfIron - 4/29/2009, 1:28 PM
@ Juggernaught

you better be jokin

@Manofiron

No he's an oaf and dont luk one inch Nordish at all,
i know make him the god of...erm...i dunno the god of forheads or suttn buh god of thunder? hell no
mutantJ - 4/29/2009, 2:04 PM
I say give him a shot. If not Thor, then maybe Baulder or Heimdal. Who knows.
CaptainAmazing - 4/29/2009, 2:21 PM
That picture intimadates me....
TheSoulEater - 4/29/2009, 2:31 PM
I was being silly and sarcastic, but there was a point in it. Finally they produce a candidate that actually favors the guy and you guys flip out about it like it's a bad thing.

It's retarded to hate on a guy just because he's muscular. It's like you guys are determined that Thor be played by a puny little dork like Toby McQuire.
I say give the guy a chance. He might just pull it off
Juggernaut - 4/29/2009, 3:12 PM
Verne Troyer for Thor...F'Yeah.
SirPrize - 4/29/2009, 3:26 PM

sirprize: no
NightAvenger - 4/29/2009, 3:51 PM

Sorry buddy, but I'm not backing you on this one. You should do some independant films for a while, try filming a few commercials, then go work on either a Nickelodeon or Disney show or a soap opera. Maybe after all that, you'll get cast in CSI as a dead drug addict, or maybe a made-for-TV movie. After that, try getting cast in a mediocre comedy like Surviving Suburbia as a recurring role, then work on getting some lead roles before you ever imagine that you'll have a shot at booking a COMIC BOOK HERO on your first time out.

Wow, pretty much planned your life out for you, huh?
bobbyjones6969 - 4/29/2009, 4:05 PM
SirPrize: How about we conjure up some Valkyries to take care of this guy? lol
adamant877 - 4/29/2009, 4:15 PM
The best he could do is keep on acting in the wrestling rings.He may have Thor's body, but he doesn't look like a God, he looks more like a troll.
I'll suport him for the part of Ulrich the Troll.
Verdugo - 4/29/2009, 4:17 PM
Adamant877 - I'm afraid to conjure up some Valkyries cause he might want to play one of them too. He has long hair yannow. LOL.

NewAvenger4 - Verne Troyer was a joke.
SirPrize - 4/29/2009, 4:54 PM
Juggernaut makes a good point. I can't think of a single 'good' actor that looks the part of Thor. Since it'll be an action movie directed by Brannagh, the acting will probaby be pretty hammy anyways (not dissing Brannagh, he just has a flair for the dramatic ;), there is hardly any need for acadamy award winning performances here.

I'd rather have someone like this guy who looks the part stumble through a line or two to pull of the part than, say, Tim Robbins or Johnny Depp try to play Thor just because they are 'good' actors. If they can get a good actor who looks like Thor, great, but I havent seen one yet.
Shadowelfz - 4/29/2009, 5:11 PM
Maybe Josh Hartnett was being considered for Balder instead of Thor and Loki.
SupahPhreak - 4/29/2009, 8:36 PM
he had a few minute exposure on the movie outlander of jim caviezel... and one those character who was killed too soon...so acting wise..cant judge im not quite satisfied with his few minute performance...

adamant877- Hey we can share!!! :P

You know, i get that you guys feel sorry for him because "he has a dreeeaaam". If he had the talent to begin with, we wouldn't be having this conversation because we'd all be for him. The very FACT that makes most of us hate this guy for Thor is that he'd go through acting classes "IF" Marvel asked him to. HOW BOUT TAKE THE DAMN CLASSES THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN WAAAYY WAAAAAAAYYYYYY BACK, you know to show at least SOME "dedication", INSTEAD OF DEDICATING YOUR WHOLE LIFE TO GETTING MUSCLES?!?!?!?! That's what is pissing me off about his crying for the role is that he's going "look, i got muscles and long blond hair... PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME!!!" instead of having the "acting background" REQUIRED for such a STELLAR role to begin with!!!

But you guys are right, let's give him a shot. Let's... let's give him the perfect opportunity to [frick] UP a great character we all know and love and have been waiting ALL OUR LIVES to see on the big screen... just cause... cause he dreams of it. Cause ... cause we all know that "comic book movies" don't need to be "great" to succeed at the box office right? So Marvel can start putting shit on the screen cause the masses will eat it all up right? Punisher War Zone, Elektra, Captain "freakin" America... anyone???

You know, i've always had a dream of being a lead signer in a rock band even though i know personnaly that i can't sing worth shit and never bothered to get singing lessons... anyone care to sign me up for a ten album reccord deal?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Shaman - 4/30/2009, 7:11 AM
Shaman - question is who is gonna dive for those sloppy seconds?

SirPrize - 4/30/2009, 8:19 AM
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I already got to er', and Supermike jumped in after me, so...
"Enter at your own peril!" lol
adamant877 - 4/30/2009, 10:23 AM
Juggernaut,

I agree with you just because someone is big and muscular doesnt mean the only thing they can do is hit or break things lol. Im a big guy myself 6'2 265lbs muscular and I know the sterotype, but Im college educated..... degree in Aeronautics and I also played some college football and fought. I say find someone who's atleast 6'3-6'6 over 200lbs. Has to be a GOOD actor unlike alot of superheroe characters THOR is one character that needs a good actor to pull it off. Like I've said in the past there's has to be some guy somewhere who is THOR. He really hasnt done anything else and this role was meant for him. I say find a unknown with a backround in theater, EUROPEAN,famaliar with the character,fit,and cant wait to become THOR. Like how Hugh Jackman is\became Wolverine or Health Ledger is\became the Joker.
BLADE4040 - 4/30/2009, 10:25 AM
Oy, Blade4040,

Cool. I'm an amateur BB myself, so I relate. This is good because your at least one guy that doesn't hate just because the person works out. Are you by any chance on TNation?
The description you gave:
"I say find a unknown with a backround in theater, EUROPEAN,famaliar with the character,fit,and cant wait to become THOR. Like how Hugh Jackman is\became Wolverine or Health Ledger is\became the Joker."
Can u think of anyone like that? They don't have to have blonde hair.

And about the James Preston Rogers thing.. It's really kind of moot anyway because as far as we know he isn't even in the running. No one attatched to the Thor movie has ever even mentioned his name.
Juggernaut - 4/30/2009, 1:35 PM
So the bottom line here is that There is no actor that is perfect per se. What we need is an incredibly good actor preferably with long hair, a Nordic accent and who is over 6' tall, big boned, chiseled good looks, with a build like a pro body builder.

We all know that no such actor exists so all anyone can do is hope for the best and wait and see.

But I will tell you this.. if they do get a small man for this role I will not be pleased, but I will still give it a chance.
Juggernaut - 4/30/2009, 1:42 PM
Juggernaut,

Well I think you are thinking of none other than Nick Cage. Eh? Am I right? Need I say more? That mans bones are as sharp as a laser scalpel.

nickcage
Betty - 4/30/2009, 9:57 PM
Shaman- Don't get me wrong man, I don't think they should sign him up right away, but they should at least give him a shot at reading the script. Who knows, he might be good, or he might be terrible. The casting director will find that out when hes done. Most of the time they are pretty good at casting the right actor, but every once in a while we get Nicholas Cage playing Ghost Rider or Justin Chatwin playing Goku ;)

Betty- Hell no, though with that long face of his he could pull of Beta Ray Bill...
