The New Live Action TMNT Movie Will Follow In The Same Footsteps As Batman Begins

TMNT co-creator Peter Laird lets us in on some nice details regarding the upcoming live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
When asked in what direction the new film will be taking Peter Laird had the following to say:

“I can say that at this point there are a lot of positive feelings about a ‘Batman Begins’-style ‘reboot,’ which would, of necessity, include a retelling of the Turtles’ origin story,” Laird told MTV News of early plot discussions regarding the film. “Having said that, I would also be into an all-new story, if it was decided that that was a more desirable direction. Either way is fine with me, to be honest!”

Peter went on to share some potential plot points regarding the new film:
“Simply telling the story of what happened in the first issue of the ‘TMNT’ comic book would be a pretty short movie, so I suspect other things from the Turtles’ history in the comics might be brought into it,” continued Laird. “I would not be unhappy to somehow see the tale of Baxter Stockman and the robotic ‘mousers’ folded into this movie, as well as some elements possibly setting up the TCRI connection for a possible sixth (or seventh) movie. But I think I’m getting a little ahead of myself there.”

Peter goes on to say that making a TMNT movie has to include The Shredder and that April O’Neil and Casey Jones have also been in discussions to appear as well.

Finally Peter offered details on the technology that will be used to make the turtles have facial expressions:

“The basic idea, as I understand it, is to do an all live action shoot, with actors and stuntmen in full Turtle suits,” said Laird. “To add expressiveness to the Turtles’ faces which would be difficult if not impossible to get with animatronics and/or puppetry, there would be ‘face replacement,’ with CGI Turtle faces superimposed on the live action performers’ heads.”

“This technology has been proven to be incredibly effective if done correctly,” added Laird. “Look at the character of Davey Jones in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies, with his mass of writhing tentacles… an incredible effect.”

You don't deserve your username, DA.

Ninja Turtles are awesome and it sounds like they are really gonna make this one shine!
saymekian - 4/30/2009, 9:00 AM
cannot wait for this film!!!
Rorschachfan09 - 4/30/2009, 9:08 AM
I care. I'm excited for another live action turtles flic. That CG mistake that was recently released was too much for the kids and might as well been a new CG TV series...
CyborgNinja - 4/30/2009, 9:13 AM
Hey Cyborg, The first set of Turtle movies were for kids too. Remember, When we were kids and enjoyed the movies? Don't you want a new generation to like them too? Or do you want the franchise to die?

Personally I really liked the CGI movie. They did things with it that were a long time coming. Specifically the Raph & Leo fight. That was AWESOME!!!
Was a fan and always a fan.
thills22 - 4/30/2009, 9:25 AM
never was fan of the turtles after i was 5. but if theyre doing baxter stockman i'll be there!
dellamorte1872 - 4/30/2009, 9:27 AM
Still think it should be CGI like batman and superman should be
Supermike - 4/30/2009, 9:29 AM
hell yeah i've been waiting for this since 1993
CaptainPretender - 4/30/2009, 9:34 AM
I can't wait to see wat they do with this.
Bandrews1 - 4/30/2009, 9:38 AM
LOL Supermike I find all of ur comments hilarious cause your such a douche!!!!
FattSmelliott - 4/30/2009, 9:54 AM
Nice! this is perfect! exactly what the Turtles franchise needs, and it's going back to its awesome live action style!
davidzuck - 4/30/2009, 10:04 AM
woot woot! :)
SpiderMan209 - 4/30/2009, 10:06 AM
HELLS YEAH! Love me some Ninja Turtles!
LastSon1027 - 4/30/2009, 10:10 AM
Bad-freakin-Ass, this could be awesome, sounds like they may be putting more than amoments thought into it.
theFACE - 4/30/2009, 10:13 AM
Cyborgninja the cgi movie was less kid friendly than the damn live action ones! I didnt see any dance routines with Vanilla Ice in that one...

Anyway like thills22 said, the Turtles are for kids, just because we are all grown up now we cant expect them to make a Teenage Mutant Dark Knight Of The Turtle just for us! Sure you can push the boundries a bit with pg13 and make it a bit more gritty like the original comics, but overall its going to be very kid orientated..i just hope its good!
Rorschach01 - 4/30/2009, 10:15 AM
Awesome! Righteous! Wicked! Bossanova? This sounds like an exciting adventure, especially for anyone who grew up with the ninja turtles such as myself. I love that Peter Laird has still continued to be so invested in his creations. Even though there's a bit of a generation gap, it makes you wonder how the Batman or X-men movies would go if Bob Kane and Stan Lee were calling the shots.
Deathlok - 4/30/2009, 10:21 AM
I would love to see a new turtles movie. I only hope it will still be for the kids. I watched the turtles a lot growing up and it would be nice to see it stay kid friendly.
xeddiemetalx - 4/30/2009, 10:27 AM
I agree with Thills2, but I would like for them to continue the story line where they left off.
Spock - 4/30/2009, 10:37 AM
If this is done right It'll be the greatest thing ever . I love being a Turtle!
doomsack - 4/30/2009, 11:11 AM
i hope they kinda do a short re-telling of the origins like they did in Superman Returns. just a short montage thing. who is the production company behind this? i am a little nervous about seeing live action turtles. i want to believe it but its not like it could happen...brb *tries to create turtle-people...fails miserably...* k i'm back. i have to go to my little brother's funeral so i'll talk to yall later... well maybe not. i could be going away for a long time...
ManOfIron - 4/30/2009, 11:26 AM
this has me excited. a comic book movie adaption that could actually USE the batman begins style reboot! not just gunna do it cuz it worked for batman like they want to to do with superman and prob a million other things that are being optioned as we speak. so thank you for this little bit of news. hope it doesnt suck.
MasterExploder - 4/30/2009, 11:41 AM
so exciting! i just hope april is in it and they find someone good to play her. sarah michelle gellar did a great job as april in the cgi version. i think she could pull it off in rl too.
Scarlett - 4/30/2009, 11:48 AM
SEE!!! NOW THATS THE WAY IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DAMMIT, FINALLY, FINALLY,FINALLY...SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING RIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD..GEEZ HOW LONG DID THAT TAKE?...FREAKING FOREVER AND A DAY...GAWD...
GUNSMITH - 4/30/2009, 12:06 PM
they will probaly aim it for kids.
SHHH - 4/30/2009, 12:08 PM
RE: FATTSMELLIOT comment on SuperMike

Greatest comment EVER!
OLDDIRTYJER - 4/30/2009, 12:22 PM
i hope it's a good movie
prinzjoker - 4/30/2009, 12:56 PM
Baxter Stockman?... That would be so awesome! You know... If it's the REAL Baxter Stockman and not "the Fly" ripoff.

As the movie progresses, they can make him more and more into something like Bale's character from American Psycho. That would be so baddass.
J. "Falcon" Ayers - 4/30/2009, 1:27 PM
saymekian, I grew up with the turtles too, but come on!! Do we really need another live action film? Its ridiculous. I'm 27 years old, mate. I had the original Eastman/Laird books. I just feel like its a bit childish. Scratch that. I AM SICK OF REBOOTS!!!!!!! Anyone else? Here are the only films that deserve reboots:

1. Daredevil (Just watched it again- it could b better.)

2. Superman (Anything to get a Justice League franchise going.)

i GUESS THATS IT.
DarkAvengers - 4/30/2009, 2:06 PM
I was ok with the cgi movie regardless of the plot holes. I would like to see more of those. I also collected the original eastman and laird series. In fact they are some of my most valuable comics. I would like to see a reboot in that style but i know it wont happen with the tried and true "archie" style.

Like they wouldnt have THE SHREDDER in the next one. It was always the damn shredder! (except for cgi) If it wasnt shredder, it was kang. Which is also the shredder. Because there like, house mates.

Michealangelo- "Dudes, i cant like, find my tax forms OR my W2s from 1990!"

Leonardo- "You know who i think is behind this? The Shredder!"

Fun Fact- In case some of you didnt know. Fresh Prince's "Uncle Phil"(James Avery) was the voice of the shredder. Whats cool is sometimes, if you watch fresh prince again, you can hear the shredder in his voice from time to time.
Betty - 4/30/2009, 2:44 PM
TMNT'S REBOOTED??? What a surprise not!!!! Why can't they carry on dumb!!! Don't want another stupid ORIGIN story!!! The mixing CGI, well ofcourse they are gonna do that, just like PIRATES it works!!! But REBOOT, NOOOO!!! How about just do that CASEY JONES solo movie!!! ; )
LEEE777 - 4/30/2009, 3:37 PM
ManOfIron @ yeah, if they gotta do it, short flashbacks type thing!!!
LEEE777 - 4/30/2009, 3:39 PM
baxter sounds cool but you cannot say 6th or 7th movie when this would be the first.
grif - 4/30/2009, 3:43 PM
u all will find something stupid wrong with it.
Logan-X - 4/30/2009, 4:02 PM
@Betty- Nice! thanks for the info yo!
shibazz - 4/30/2009, 4:21 PM

LethalWeapon - 4/30/2009, 4:36 PM
Sweet! Can't Wait!!!
LuV1138 - 4/30/2009, 4:55 PM
pack this mother with ninjas up the ying yang. Its about time ninjas made a come back. for the longest time i was like we need to start making ninja movie. Ninja Gaiden if any directors are reading this. Or if not make a American Ninja again. just make more ninja movies (hyperventalating)lol
HR - 4/30/2009, 5:17 PM
DarkAvenger: once again I agree with you WHO CARES.
Unless they make it completely CGI its going to look LAME. How about putting that money and effort towards a real superheroe movie like THE FLASH,WONDER WOMAN ,GREEN LANTERN,I'd even settle for a Green Arrow movie over a bunch of lame turtles. Reboots:Superman plzzzz, Daredevil needs one but I dont care,Ghost Rider make it darker and rated R,Fantastic Four if it wasnt so corny maybe it wouldnt need one but...,and maybe Electra.
BLADE4040 - 4/30/2009, 5:46 PM
Are you serious! "WHO CARES" I grew up watching the cartoons and collecting action figures. Turtles are sweet and they must be doing something right casue they are still around.

OH YEA!
T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!

Baxtor would be sweet but i would like to see Krang or the rock soliders at some point.
shadowboxer - 4/30/2009, 6:10 PM
Hero's in a half shell!

I liked the last one (animated) and I grew up with the games and catoons and the action figures were awsome too. I'd love to take my son to see this. He has a fascination with green violence (Hulk).
Galvatron - 4/30/2009, 6:17 PM
i can't wait this is awesome i love the turtles i hope they keep making them becuase i will always watch them my favorite besides the first live action movie was number two tokka and razzar omg when they are trying to say master and it comes out as momma so great.......

ma ma mamma ::tokka nodds:: mammma!!!!!!!!
dogchasingcars - 4/30/2009, 6:52 PM
they were called FOOT soldiers @SHADOWBOXER. tokka and razzar sucked, they were corny rip-offs of bebop and rocksteady. seeing b+r along side shredder, krang, baxter stockman sounds cool. that should cover a trilogy supporting casey jones, splinter and april o'niel.
dellamorte1872 - 4/30/2009, 8:23 PM
Sounds cool but I hope they are not thinking of taking a more adult, serious tone with the 'Batman Begins' reboot style... I mean they are freakin mutated turtles for gods sake! Can't take them serious. The turtles are suppossed to be fun characters that kids and adults can enjoy. We don't need any brooding turtles. Except maybe Ralph ;)
Shadowelfz - 4/30/2009, 10:36 PM
I like the CGI movie. The live action film were awesome but it's yesterdays news. CGI RULES!!! I'll be super excited if Shredder comes back from the dead.
Torian Brown - 4/30/2009, 11:07 PM
I just hope they leave the time travelling bs out of this movie. Shredder rules!!
Tobuttica - 4/30/2009, 11:51 PM
cowabunga man, this movie is gonna rock.
Ivy182 - 5/1/2009, 2:06 AM
Wow, really, all you people trashing the idea of a live action Turtles must not have seen the original Turtles movie or remember how awesomely it rocked.
Not even the CGI movie topped that in story or writing.
The best out of all of them so far.

Oddfellow - 5/1/2009, 3:20 AM
turtle power
mikearey - 5/1/2009, 4:27 AM
I'm actually slightly worried due to a slight comment made by Peter, calling the company TCRI instead of TGRI. If he could make that mistake, I wonder what else could go wrong, and it makes you wonder how much he actually knows about the series? I'm now slightly concerned. I'll just have to wait and see now, but my hopes are now diminishing.
AdamFalcon - 5/1/2009, 8:49 AM
crazy good!
TaffetaDarling - 5/1/2009, 7:35 PM
@ dellamorte1872

yeah, i know who the difference between the foot and rock soliders. i was a good age that the time of their peak, so i rmemeber alot about them. TMNT 2 was horrible they should have just gone with bebop and rocksteady instead of using tokkor and razzar. they where horrible i still remember being mad becasue they didn't use b&r. and don't get me started on TMNT 3, there were no words for that piece.

here is a link to an image of a rock solider
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a116/jmidget123/GeneralTraag.jpg

anyways rock soliders are from demension X along with krang ;)
not foot soliders
