Zack Snyder Dishes On How Gory The Blu-Ray Edition Of The Watchmen Will Be

The Watchmen “Director’s Cut” Blu-Ray disc hits theaters July 21st, and guess what? We get more Rorschach!!
Is The Watchmen looking a little bit better of a movie since most of the summer's over rated blockbusters have hit theaters and whimpered out? Yes it is. In fact in light of some of the disappointing flicks we have gotten this past movie going season The Watchmen proved to be dark, gritty and well, just a great adult ComicBookMovie.

The Watchmen “Director’s Cut” Blu-Ray disc hits theaters July 21st and along with the Hollis Mason death scene that fans have demanded to see, there’s some pretty cool stuff in there.

“There’s a couple Rorschach scenes; it’s a little bit more violent overall,” Snyder states of the “Maximum Movie Mode” Blu-Ray disc, which even has a mode exclusively for Blu-Ray where the director walks onto the screen and explains a certain scenes’ significance. “It’s a little gorier, a teeny bit gorier; like, when Veidt’s being assassinated, the secretary puts her hand out and she gets shot in the hand - and her fingers fly off.”

That's Perfect!!

Wait!! There's more Easter egg goodness inserted into Zack Snyder’s 25-minute-longer Director’s Cut, “After Hollis dies, we cut to Dan and Rorschach and they go to Happy Harry’s to get some info on who’s trying to assassinate Veidt…at the end of that scene, in the theatrical version, it cuts (after they get some information). In the longer version, Dan notices on the TV that there’s a report that Hollis has been murdered. He sees that, and then he sees a Knot Top in the bar, and he attacks him and beats the shit out of him, just like in the graphic novel. Then Rorschach pulls him off and says ‘not in front of the civilians!’”

More Rorschach is just what the Doctor ordered and with this new release we get just that.

Snyder also states “Dan Dreiberg is getting emotional, he’s knocking the guy’s teeth out of his mouth; it’s pretty gory,” Snyder promised of the scene cut from the theatrical release for its length. “It’s the kind of thing where you get to see Dan lose it, which helps set up the end of the movie a little bit.”

“Everybody gets a little bit extra character from all that stuff,” Snyder states of the new cut.

LEEE777 - 6/29/2009, 1:05 PM
watchmen definately out did all the other movies so far. i may have to buy a blue ray just for this. or more likely a ps3. its a good excuse to get one
superdog - 6/29/2009, 1:12 PM
I'm getting this version just because it has more scenes of Rorschach in it.
Bandrews1 - 6/29/2009, 1:12 PM
Any versions a good version, but yeah, this is gonna be a killer! ; )
LEEE777 - 6/29/2009, 1:13 PM
hey lee777 you gonna get the blue ray wolverine? there may be extra footage for ya in there
superdog - 6/29/2009, 1:20 PM
Yeah of course i will. ; )

: D
LEEE777 - 6/29/2009, 1:22 PM
Oh dont get him going on Wolverine!!

This looks class, more Rorschach? How can that go wrong!

And Watchmen was better than every other "Blockbuster" summer movie that has come out since..combined. The only one that could give it a run for its money is Star Trek.
Rorschach01 - 6/29/2009, 1:23 PM
ROR @ ; D
LEEE777 - 6/29/2009, 1:29 PM
I'm getting this. I wont even try to look for a cheap copy somewhere. I will actually go into a store and pay full price.
MsKyle08 - 6/29/2009, 1:31 PM
Now for some music =

LEEE777 - 6/29/2009, 1:31 PM
i agree with the star trek comparison. and trust me ror, leee777 didnt need me to get him started on wolvie. he woudl have got there eventually. i just wanted to get it out of the way early
superdog - 6/29/2009, 1:32 PM
You know I saw footage of dan attacking the punk who killed hollis. It was during the interview things that were posted on this very site. I really though that would be in the theatres, i was pretty upset when it wasnt.
divo - 6/29/2009, 1:34 PM
Hey, i was suprised i liked TREK! Coz i don't really like Star Trek lol! ; D

If HOLLYWOOD did more movies like WATCHMEN & TREK we'd all be happy!
LEEE777 - 6/29/2009, 1:36 PM
Hey, Rorschach01, never thought you'd be a big fan of Rorscha...oh yeah. Don't mind me!
Howlett04 - 6/29/2009, 1:41 PM
yes leee777 WE would be happy, but hollywood usually doesnt care about us. they only care about the almight dollar, and if the outside comic society has more money, they will make the movies for them not us. can you think of a recent comicbook movie in which they did that?
superdog - 6/29/2009, 1:43 PM
Best movie this year and in my opinion highly underated against TDK
teabag - 6/29/2009, 1:51 PM
Quick ? - when does the Director's Cut Blu Ray come out. The 21st of July???
Raiden - 6/29/2009, 1:52 PM
F-ing a.

Can't wait for the director's cut. I'm all over that. Oh yeah - Watchmen is by far the best film of the year so far - Star Trek is a close second.

Keven - 6/29/2009, 2:01 PM
The movie rocked and so will the director's cut. The only thing I would have changed was to actually have the final confrontation/dialogue between veidt and manhattan, it felt like a bit of a ripoff to just have them reference the key line.
mwmcintyre - 6/29/2009, 2:08 PM
I only watched Watchmen once and while waitin for my Imax to start it they decided to not show it... Bastards!!!

Cant Wait for the full shebang to come out on blueray for an awesome 3 and a half hour binge!!!

Off topic @Rorshach Was it you who has been looking forward to 'the road' for a while?
TheAnswer - 6/29/2009, 2:13 PM
Well... TDK was amazing... But I think Watchmen steals the cake. (Plus, when I saw it, some dude in the theatre shouted "YOU CAN DOOOOOO EEEET!) when Niteowl and Silkie got it on, lol)

Plus... You wouldn't see this crap in Watchmen, either...

BaronBubba - 6/29/2009, 2:18 PM
that way, they can sell different versions of my toys so we can make more money
superdog - 6/29/2009, 2:22 PM
I hear they are gonna bring out a vhs version....

teabag - 6/29/2009, 2:28 PM

teabag - 6/29/2009, 2:32 PM
haha! i hope that line is in the directors cut!

joshw24 - 6/29/2009, 2:37 PM
ive seen events so tiny and fast they hardly can be said to have occured at all.......thats what she said...ba dum dum.

Rorschach01 - 6/29/2009, 3:16 PM
Fotc @ Are you Supermike's bf???? : D
LEEE777 - 6/29/2009, 3:21 PM
Man, I've gotta' see the Hollis Mason death scene. It was one of the most upsetting parts in the book.
longbowhunter - 6/29/2009, 3:41 PM
I'll only cry during the Hollis Mason scene if they have his OLD dog with him... Then my tears shall flow like great waterfalls above a magical land of gnomes and elves.
BaronBubba - 6/29/2009, 4:47 PM
"I'll only cry during the Hollis Mason scene if they have his OLD dog with him... Then my tears shall flow like great waterfalls above a magical land of gnomes and elves."

Dude... You AND Teabag get a room, and leave the Comicbook movies to us adults!
SupermanReturns2 - 6/29/2009, 5:11 PM
Yeah go watch Marley and me if u wanna cry about dead dogs
superdog - 6/29/2009, 5:31 PM
Well, I'd rather watch or read "Of Mice and Men" to do that...

So sad...

Kyos - 6/29/2009, 6:01 PM
"And i get to tend them Rabbits George"

BOOM

Sob, sniffle.
Rorschach01 - 6/29/2009, 6:12 PM
Ha! good shit! Best movie of the year by far! Probley slipped into my personal top 10 all time!
CloSeTNerD29 - 6/29/2009, 6:13 PM
Anybody want to name their top 10?
CloSeTNerD29 - 6/29/2009, 6:23 PM
Movies full stop of CBMs?
Rorschach01 - 6/29/2009, 6:36 PM
Yeah dude whatever
CloSeTNerD29 - 6/29/2009, 6:41 PM
Oh excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me!

I meant should we name out top ten movies, or top then comic book movies..

But yknow, whatever
Rorschach01 - 6/29/2009, 7:15 PM
dont do it ror. you already get crushed for your reviews, if you make a top 10 list i worry about your safety and sanity
superdog - 6/29/2009, 7:16 PM
Well, the Watchmen movie was cool, but I felt it was sort of a study guide for the graphic novel.

Some of the most devastating scenes in the comic were totally different and, for me, they lost their impact. I admit that it wasn't the trainwreck I expected but the Laurie at Mars scene was one of my favorites and in the movie it was kind of meh, Rorscharch handcuffing the child killer and giving him a saw and setting the place on fire was also great instead of splitting his head in two, and don't get me started on the machine of doom (I still have serious issues with it, I mean if you were the most powerful being in the universe would you help anyone build a machine that could replicate your powers? I mean that's just dumb) I still want to see a Watchmen movie with a squid in the ending. And some scenes were just uncomfortable (most specificallly the Hallelujah sex scene, and the salesman-comicbook kid hug)

So for me the graphic novel is really great, the movie was good but it can't maesure itself to the original, no matter how gory it is and how much rorscharch they want to push down my throat. I mean some of the foreshadowing wasn't that.. it was just spelling what was to come. Still I'll probably buy the blu ray just to see what they cram in there as extras. But I have to agree, so far it has been one of the best CBM this year, best movie so far is Up.

And ror, listen to superdog, he apparently has sound advice, sort of like Jiminy cricket.
NoobMike - 6/29/2009, 7:31 PM
Sorry didnt mean 2 sound like a douche. Yeah Ror your better off not...
CloSeTNerD29 - 6/29/2009, 8:13 PM
IS THE SQUID IN THE EXTRAS?

GUNSMITH - 6/29/2009, 8:21 PM

8)The African Queen

13 ghosts
Carlito's way
clerks 2
the big Lewboski
liar liar
top 10 of all time
Nd by the way watchmen was not that great. it may have been better than any action flick this year but tghat does not mean we should call it the greatest comic book movie of all time. it in no way shape or form gave me what the book did, ther for this movie is bettere left sub par. i will be buying this though.. of course
da2213viking - 6/29/2009, 9:34 PM
Liar Liar Top 10 of all time? Well to each is own.

I do agree Watchmen was no where near the Comic

HAWK out
THEHAWK - 6/29/2009, 9:44 PM
nope I'm just someone who likes originality in film. I think cinema follows a different format than books or comics(both?) I think it showed in the awkwardness of the movie. If you all are such fans and the movie is so perfect why did it fail in the box office
fotc - 6/29/2009, 11:12 PM
Dr. Manattan's schlong being one of the few things they kept intact from the comic?
THEHAWK - 6/29/2009, 11:22 PM
fotc it failed in the boxoffice because it only appealed to us comic geeks, alot of people are unaware of what watchmen is, at least they are from where im from. aside from that i loved this movie, wouldnt be one of my all time favs though
BOOK552 - 6/29/2009, 11:33 PM
theres enough fans put there to pull in more than a total of 100 mil total.. i mean it was the book basically to a t but i think it needed to hit all of the ideas of the ocmics but not in that exact order... i couldnt get involved in the movie at all becuase of its format... this is just my opinion obviously im in the minority, maybe for a reason but i just didnt like how it played out on the screan
fotc - 6/29/2009, 11:54 PM
@supermanreturns2....Real adults cry.........little boys pretend it never happens!!

fotc...watchmen is full of originality compared to every other superhero film out there.....cus its not recognised doesnt mean its a shit film.....to me its the holy grail

teabag - 6/30/2009, 1:05 AM
OZYMANDIAS SUCKED! i know he did his weird on again off again accent foron purpose when ADRIAN would get really mad. but i found it distracting if that is what he was going for. and OZYMANDIAS IS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER SO TO [frick] HIM UP THAT BAD WAS AWEUL! him and rorsach were my favorite charcters in the original GRAPHIC NOVEL
dellamorte1872 - 6/30/2009, 4:34 AM
"If you all are such fans and the movie is so perfect why did it fail in the box office"

The same reason that robot "testicles" are considered humorous.
J. "Falcon" Ayers - 6/30/2009, 4:35 AM
haha, exactly! The box office argument is a brain fart. "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" was number 1 at the Box office for weeks and made a stack of cash. "The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford" never touched the box office and made [frick] all. Guess which one is the better movie?

Cash does not always = Good, and vice versa.

Ok, im not taking your advice guys! Here's my top 10..in no particular order.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
The Big Lebowski(good call da2213viking )
La Haine
Young Guns
TDK
Serenity
Dead Man's Shoes
Withnail And I
The Matrix(just the first one!)
Paris Texas
Rorschach01 - 6/30/2009, 5:09 AM
I actualy agree with alot on that list Ror...all except Serenity....it just didnt flow like a movie for me
teabag - 6/30/2009, 5:33 AM
Yeah, thats a divider. I loved the series so loved the movie, but it could be a difficult watch if you had not already watched Firefly.
Rorschach01 - 6/30/2009, 6:00 AM
I liked the series ....but i guess i just didnt feel the film....nothing against it tho!...you probably feel the same to my choises.....imagine a world where we all liked the same movies.........uuuuggghhhh.boring

teabag - 6/30/2009, 6:17 AM
Wheres WOLVIE in your top 10?????

Im joking lol! ; D

teabag - 6/30/2009, 6:48 AM
LEEE Withnail and I is well worth a watch, I love that film!

@Ror My cuz just lent me the book and it is fantastic so far it's pretty much taking up my day!!
TheAnswer - 6/30/2009, 7:04 AM
Another film i love which not alot of people know about is Dead Mans Shoes..........anyone know that one?
teabag - 6/30/2009, 7:25 AM
Watchmen as a film had its faults, but it was IMMEASURABLY better than the train wreck that was "Star Trek". At least Watchmen had a coherent plot that didn't have gaping holes in logic in virtually every scene!

I'm looking forward to the Watchmen DVD to see that "director's cut". I've got a feeling that a lot of the little things I felt were missing from the movie will be found there. I'll withhold further comment on that until I actually see it. Still no alien calamari sightings, apparently, but we'll deal with it. Not to resurrect a thread arguing about that, since I think we beat that horse to death, but I will say again that I did NOT like the "changed ending" in the movie.

So is this article saying that the regular DVD will have a lot less on it than the Blu-Ray one? I hope not. I don't own an HDTV, and have no intention of buying Blu Ray anytime in the foreseeable future. The DVD's should remain equal.
comicb00kguy - 6/30/2009, 7:31 AM
@teabag - The DVD is sitting next to me. The film is awesome!!
TheAnswer - 6/30/2009, 7:40 AM
TheAnswer...good man....love that film...seriously under recognised...i can never find the dvd...where did you get it?
teabag - 6/30/2009, 7:55 AM
Well i'm in Scotland and it's a UK film so I just got it at HMV I think but I cant be sure.
TheAnswer - 6/30/2009, 8:01 AM
Im in the UK but i never can find it damit...oh well the hunt goes on
teabag - 6/30/2009, 8:36 AM
Got here a bit late, but still, I gotta drop my top 10 movies of all time:

1. Irreversible
2. Dancer in the Dark
3. Plague Dogs
4. Cinema Paradiso
5. Ip Man
6. Hard Candy
7. Man From Earth
8. Matrix
9. Waking Life
10. 300

While Watchmen was a dream come true and a very impressive movie, it only made it into the top 20 list.
ManhuntersBastardChild - 6/30/2009, 9:51 AM
What no Muppets take Manhatten???
teabag - 6/30/2009, 10:27 AM
Wow. So has any one seen any of these
1)Casablanca
2)Harvey
3)Cool Hand Luke
4)It's a Wonderful Life
5)Goodfellas
6)The Graduate
7)The Godfather
8)The African Queen
9)CLockWork Orange
10)Dr. Strangelove:or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Atomic Bomb

i highly recommend veiwing these if you ever have a chance, they are truely life changing. And far better than most of the crap they release today. These are films that actually have a good plot.

HAWK out
THEHAWK - 6/30/2009, 10:35 AM
Hawk, I've seen 5,7,9 and 10...all great movies! I think what makes a movie great is mainly the time in your life at which you watch it and of course that the production, direction, acting and plot are all above average. But ultimately, it comes down to temperament/taste and conext. i mean, Liar Liar made someone's list up top somewhere...if that doesn't tell us that top 10s are pretty random...lol...then i don't know what can!
ManhuntersBastardChild - 6/30/2009, 10:45 AM
Well, its all too apparent that neither SupermanReturns2 nor Superdog understand the basic tenets of sarcasm... Seeing as how they thought me saying, "I'll only cry during the Hollis Mason scene if they have his OLD dog with him... Then my tears shall flow like great waterfalls above a magical land of gnomes and elves.", was a serious statement. Wow. But then again, a person with a name that represents one of the worst Comic Movies of recent history as well as another name that relates to a... uncanny canine... Wouldn't get that.

Well... BOOHOO! NITEOWL's DAWGGIES DEADZ!
BaronBubba - 6/30/2009, 11:13 AM
How about something a little different: 10 movies everyone should see before they graduate from high school: (no particular order)
1. Animal House
2. Ferris Buehler's Day Off
3. Sixteen Candles
4. Breakfast Club
5. Up the Academy (tough to find but really funny)
6. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
7. Hollywood Knights
8. Better Off Dead
9. Weird Science
10. Real Genius

Most of these should be available on DVD at most retailers or online. All are classics.
comicb00kguy - 6/30/2009, 11:24 AM
TheHawk ive seen all those except casablanca...some great film there but i actualy think the Ten Commandments might be in my top 20..that film was a great acheivment at the time
teabag - 6/30/2009, 11:33 AM
Ah yes the Majesty that is Charlton Heston. Amazing film, back in high school we almost had a Chuck Heston themed homecoming.
THEHAWK - 6/30/2009, 12:22 PM
Teabag, Dead Mans Shoes is on my list! [frick]ing class movie. Most of the movies all of you guys listed are great, i like your styles!

ManhuntersBastardChild, as technically brilliant as Irreversible is i could never recommend it to anyone!

Cool Hand Luke is a gem, i should have stuck that in somewhere..
Rorschach01 - 6/30/2009, 12:33 PM
"What we have hear is a failure to communicate. Some men you just can;t reach, so you get what we had here last week. Well thats the way he wants it, he gets it. I don't like it anymore than you men."

-Captain

Great line from Cool Hand Luke!
THEHAWK - 6/30/2009, 12:54 PM
Rorschach, I hear you! I have had to be very selective when recommending it to other people as it can easily destroy one's reputation if the recommendee misunderstands "what exactly" it is that you liked about the movie. So, trust, i go into a thorough 45 minute explanation about what the movie is and what it means to me, before i encourage them to go out and watch it. Really stupendious acting in that movie!
ManhuntersBastardChild - 6/30/2009, 1:02 PM
it wasn't that bad.
THEHAWK - 6/30/2009, 1:36 PM
The Sand Pebbles......god bless McQueen
teabag - 6/30/2009, 2:38 PM
Empire Strikes Back didn't make anyone's list?

tisk tisk

Has the prequelogy ruined the rep of an all time classic?

With the likes of The Matrix, 300, and (hrm) Liar Liar being mentioned, that's a bit of a shocker.

teabag - que the required "shocker" image if you will.
BillyBlack - 6/30/2009, 5:59 PM
No Billy I liked the Prequel trilogy as well as the originals. They just aren't in my top 10.
THEHAWK - 6/30/2009, 8:11 PM
@Billy............

teabag - 7/1/2009, 1:38 AM
i am sorry for my...i guess crazy pick. lol. liar liar has now been replaced by the my next favorite movie. HOOK. sorry but movie was a classic. i Love hoffman's role. although the empire strikes back is a tempting one to throw in there. as well as raiders of the lost ark
