Will James Gunn Direct GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2?

Sure, it may seem like a rhetorical question, but the writer/director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was asked recently if he'd return to helm a sequel. Check out what James Gunn says after the jump

Last night's early buzz for Guardians of the Galaxy could indicate that Marvel Studios and Disney will have another big hit on their hands when the space epic adaptation hits theaters in less than two weeks. And given that the film is part of the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, and has cosmic elements that are already established in previous films, there will more than likely be a sequel and/or Avengers crossover somewhere down the line; It could already have a release date. However, the big question is will James Gunn give up another two+ years of his life and direct the Guardians sequel? “I’m actually in a somewhat weird position, he told The Adam Corolla Show (via Screenrant) during a recent podcast interview. “Because if the movie does well, then I’m gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I’ve already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don’t do the sequel, so it’s a weird situation.”

Tracking for the movie's opening weekend is reportedly at $60 million. James Gunn will be back.

There has already been heavy speculation of the direction Marvel will take with the inevitable Guardians of the Galaxy follow-up which is based solely on a pretty big Avengers: Age of Ultron spoiler. However, it's no secret the Mad titan Thanos will appear in the first Guardians movie, voiced by Josh Brolin, and that he's been looming in the shadows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and gathering the six Infinity Gems to form his Infinity Gauntlet. Surely both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy will be around when the purple villain nears achieving his evil plan.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

TChalla - 7/19/2014, 10:24 AM
@DrDoom Where'd you get that?!?
Phronesis - 7/19/2014, 10:25 AM
@DrDoom Our first look at the Hulkbuster armor was in the already released concept art.
TChalla - 7/19/2014, 10:27 AM
Well is it cool if I take a chance and make that into an article?
McNyagano - 7/19/2014, 10:27 AM
He'll be back. GOTG had his signature written all over it. Can't see anyone else doing it.
TChalla - 7/19/2014, 10:27 AM
[frick] it! Here goes nothing!
charlie2094 - 7/19/2014, 10:27 AM
So, unless the movie performs badly he'll be doing the sequel :P I'm sure he'll return, liking the look of what he's done so far!

"Will James Gunn Direct GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2?"

DeusExSponge - 7/19/2014, 10:28 AM
Man, North American audience don't disappoint me now like you did with Pacific Rim! From the trailers it feels like James got the gist of the Guardians of the Galaxy and it would be disappointing if we didn't get to see him work his magic on it again!
TChalla - 7/19/2014, 10:31 AM
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that was that lol
ruadh - 7/19/2014, 10:32 AM
DrDoom, probably not.
FastFlames - 7/19/2014, 10:33 AM
I can't wait just two more weeks!
Omarvls - 7/19/2014, 10:33 AM

We don't even know if the movie will be a hit let alone a Blockbuster

It might be a flop

I hope not
TheAbaryMan369 - 7/19/2014, 10:33 AM
I sure hope he'll be back.
TopCat89 - 7/19/2014, 10:35 AM
@PanthaSophomore

Haha, I gave you a thumbs up for effort!
TheDudeRusty - 7/19/2014, 10:35 AM
Marvel solos do better if another director helms the sequel.
ALegendaryPanda - 7/19/2014, 10:36 AM
I will cry myself to sleep every night if he doesn't.
TChalla - 7/19/2014, 10:37 AM
@TopCat89 Lol thanks!
MrBlackjack - 7/19/2014, 10:38 AM
Yeah he'll be back.
TChalla - 7/19/2014, 10:38 AM
Anywho! Yeah, so GOTG is definitely gonna do well! So look forward to the sequel!
ruadh - 7/19/2014, 10:38 AM
@TheDudeRusty, iron man 2 performed better than the original with the same director. Avengers 2 is likely to make more than the first, and will have the same director.
superotherside - 7/19/2014, 10:39 AM
@DrDoom Where did you find that?

AlexanderLykins - 7/19/2014, 10:39 AM
@DrDoom
No.
AlexanderLykins - 7/19/2014, 10:41 AM
Of course he'll be back.
AlexanderLykins - 7/19/2014, 10:43 AM
So this all depends on whether the movie does well financially? Guess I need to go see it a few more times than planned.
0megaDaGod - 7/19/2014, 10:45 AM
@Doom

that looks like something from that CG Iron Man cartoon from a few years back. Very cell shadish
DFens - 7/19/2014, 10:53 AM
He'll be back for sure... I hope.

MrCBM56 - 7/19/2014, 10:57 AM
The whole crew of Guardians will be back. Why? As Nick Fury would say-

"Because we'll need them to"
Sipprelle - 7/19/2014, 10:57 AM
@Turk k.
LMB10 - 7/19/2014, 10:57 AM
^ Yeah, ok Turk, keep dreaming
AlexanderLykins - 7/19/2014, 10:58 AM
@Turk

ruadh - 7/19/2014, 11:01 AM
I still think it'll do okay. As I said before, a modest hit.
SageMode - 7/19/2014, 11:03 AM
Everyone screenshot Turk's comment for use on future GOTG Box Office articles.
AlexanderLykins - 7/19/2014, 11:03 AM
60-90% on Rotten Tomatoes and $450-700 million are what I'm expecting. The MCU is the hottest thing in theaters. So people will be out in force to see where the story is going. You know, the Infinity Gauntlet story that is being adapted right before our very eyes every single film.

I hope when Stark grabs the scepter in Avengers: Age of Ultron he meets Thanos.
HurricaneXavier - 7/19/2014, 11:04 AM
Oh look, its Turk being a bitter bitch in another thread.
