When Latino Review caught up with Simon Kinberg, who is helping Fox Studios to expand and establish its own Marvel Cinematic Universe with X-Men and Fantastic Four, the writer/producer discussed Marvel's First Family reboot as well as the 2016 X-Men: Apocalypse. "We think about these X-Men movies as spread over – X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past to Apocalypse was imagined as a trilogy for us," he said, when asked if he sees the franchise being single narrative like Marvel Studios' different phases. "It’s the Origin stories in some ways of Charles, Raven, Hank and Eric and we will be settling things up in Apocalypse that will be generating new stories. We look at it globally as to where to mutants fit into the world. That’s why we jump from the 60’s to the 70’s and now the 80’s. We really want to be able to track the progression of the world and where do mutants fit in that world. It’s a pretty radical thing to do in any movie but certainly in a superhero franchise where you are jumping a decade each time you make a film. The reason that it is globally is that we wanted to be able to track the impact of mutants and the emergence of mutants into the world. Personally, we are very clear from the beginning as to how Charles, Eric and Raven especially dovetail, duck and weave in and out of each others lives. We were building, in some ways, a trilogy that is a story of three people; a brother, a little sister and another man who comes, in some ways, as a brother and how that sister leaves with the new brother. The war for that sisters’ soul between these two men defines First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse . That’s a larger story we are telling even though each of those films is its own coherent and complete film. You can look at the arc of those three characters almost like a television show arcing over three complete episodes."

Simon Kinberg then confirmed that, like First Class did with 1960s and Days of Future Past with the 70s, X-Men: Apocalypse will "take advantage of the historical context of the 80s." He was then asked about Channing Tatum playing Gambit on the big-screen and if he'll be introduced in a team movie (like Apocalypse) before getting his own solo movie or vice versa. "I genuinely don’t know the answer to that question," Kingberg responded. "It’s something we are all talking about whether it would be good for Gambit to be in a mainline X-Men movie or he would be in his own stand-alone movie potentially one day to be able to be in another X-Men movie after his Gambit movie introduces him. I really don’t know the answer. I don’t think there is a hard and fast rule which way is better. I think both ways have worked and I think actually the real question will be is there a role that is strong and specific enough for Gambit in a mainline X-Men movie whether it be Apocalypse or future X-Men movie that would be the right way to introduce the character. You don’t want to stick characters in these movies and manufacture something for them to do. You want the movie to tell you that it needs another character or ideally it needs this specific character." And finally, Simon Kinberg was persuaded to discuss the identity of the Four Horsemen in X-Men: Apocalypse. "I will tell you this and obviously there are a lot of different versions of the Horseman over the books, and this will not reveal any of the identities so I apologize in advance," he started. "I will let you know that our choosing of the Horseman was something that we, Bryan and myself took very, very seriously and did only after an exhaustive review of all the different Horseman, both in the comics and the cartoons who have at one point or another fallen under Apocalypse." What do you think?

Starring Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawrence (among others), X-Men: Apocalypse is expected to be directed by Bryan Singer and is set for release May 27, 2016.

Really looking forward to Apocalypse and the Four Horsemen. I'm unsure about Channing Tatum as Gambit but i'm willing to give it a chance.

EzioKenway1225 - 7/22/2014, 10:53 PM
i really like First Class,i loved DOFP and Hopefully Apocalypse continues the good streak that the X Men have been able to get for themselves after two bad films in X3 and X Men Origins

ImTheDoctor - 7/22/2014, 11:15 PM
@batz:

Mustaine wrote it first (while in Metallica), but Metallica did it better. XD

great interview with MBJ, stuff in it regarding Fantastic Four.

sounds like Trank's really approaching it in an interesting way...from the start position of the characters, not plot, not vilains, not superpowers and stuff.

it actually sounds pretty interesting the way he talks about it.

but god, man... war between these two brother's for their sister's soul?

can we [frick]ing get a goddam movie actually about the X-Men for once?
not Charles, not Eric... but the X-Men.

after this movie, can that finally happen?
Maven - 7/22/2014, 11:33 PM
X1 and X3 were the only team movies.
Jaspion - 7/22/2014, 11:35 PM
I'm sorry but this Raven being Charles sister is the dumbest thing ever. Where did this idea come from?
HulkbusterNYC - 7/22/2014, 11:44 PM
@deth I am with you man.. DoFP was good buts till didn't feel like the X-men I really want to see..
JoJo1982 - 7/22/2014, 11:58 PM
@dethpillow

I agree with ya
I'm not feeling the whole "still focusing on Eric, raven, and Xavier" thing
Maven - 7/22/2014, 11:59 PM
Time to put Mags and Mystique to rest.
Ocelot - 7/23/2014, 12:05 AM
This movie was always going to focus on Charles, Erik, Raven and to an extent Wolverine and Beast. If you thought it wasn't then you were doing nothing other than deluding yourself.

Storm, Cyclops and Jean will probably have similar type of roles to Pyro, Iceman and Rogue in X-MEN 2.

Wolverine's will obviously take Angel's role.
staypuffed - 7/23/2014, 12:57 AM
Even though Days of Future Past was amazing, I'm not overly excited for the next one. I will be in time, but not yet. The whole Apocalypse angle doesn't exactly WOW me.
CherryBomb - 7/23/2014, 1:01 AM
So excited for the Horsemen most of all!
Jollem - 7/23/2014, 1:10 AM
@staypuffed - prepare yourself for the wow-ing, for it is coming
CherryBomb - 7/23/2014, 1:42 AM
I just want Emma Frost back.

After DOFP, I'm in. Loved that movie and looking forward to Apocalypse. Performance and storytelling was top notch.
SimpleeComplex - 7/23/2014, 3:45 AM
A war for Mystique's soul? Hahhahhaa ur kidding rite? How about the X-men as an actual cohesive team that uses strategy, training simulations and utilizes sophisticated alien tech. Tired of seeing this potrayal of a rag tag group of rejects that only band together put of desperation. The X-men are supposed THE badass team who can go toe to toe with the Avengers. But at least if they're gonna center this around a strong female, at least it should be around ...an actual strong female X-MEN team member i.e. Jean, Rogue. Oh wait its cuz J Law plays Mystique and she's the hot ticket now. Never mind.

...And since X3 is erased, WWIII as Archangel aka Death or GTFO!!!
TelaVizion - 7/23/2014, 3:50 AM
X-Force or X-Factor should be the next trilogy. Take a break from "X-Men" title.
0megaDaGod - 7/23/2014, 3:55 AM
I get the feeling Wolverine is gonna be a Horsemen like he was in Astonishing X Men. That would actually be a real dope place to take the character

Not even sure how I'll handle Tatum if he doesn't nail it as Gambit. That shit could be literally the worst thing ever

It would be interesting to see them use the timeline element to have Patrick Stewart telling Wolverine about the shit that went down in the past since he doesn't remember any of it somehow

And I completely understand the brother, sister, other man/brother thing, but it's creepy as phuck once you realize Mystique tried to sleep with Xavier and Magneto. Plus, it kinda hits home with the problem of these X Men movies and why they don't 'get' them. You can't have an X Men movie where none of the 3 characters they focus on are X Men. That's phuckin hilarious, and is part of why I enjoyed First Class a bit more than DOFP, despite DOFP being the superior movie in many ways
0megaDaGod - 7/23/2014, 3:56 AM
@SimpleeComplex

Exactly. It's like, Mystique? Really?!?

jimoakley666 - 7/23/2014, 4:24 AM
I have literally no shits to give about Gambit. I'd mush rather see Fantomex interacting with Wolverine.

I hope the next movie looks to Remender's recent X-Force and Louise Simonson's classic X-Factor.

The way they left Logan at the end of the last movie, I wouldn't be surprised if we see Mystique working with Apocalypse and Logan as one of the horsemen with some Apocalypse-backed adamantium. It was always hinted in the comics that Apocalypse had something to do with the Weapon X programme (until they muddied the waters with shitty Romulous).

It'd be nice to see an alterred timeline where Warren Worthington II had kids earlier and Warren III is the same age as Scott & Jean, joins the X-Men but gets kidnapped to become Archangel. Maybe Wolverine & Sabretooth working together brainwashed by Apocalypse can be responsible for tearing his wings off.
spandex - 7/23/2014, 4:28 AM
I'm meh on Gambit too, but Channing Tatum's okay.
0megaDaGod - 7/23/2014, 4:31 AM
@Jimmoakley686

So true. Romulus pretty much screwed up so much X Men continuity it wasn't even funny
CookieKid247 - 7/23/2014, 4:49 AM
I like X-Men but the films can't afford any missteps right now so they need to be careful.
FilmDork1221 - 7/23/2014, 5:07 AM
Can people finally stop calling Bryan Singer a douche, he didn't make Xmen The Last Stand or Origins Wolverine, those were the movies that destroyed both the reputation of the Xmen movies and the continuity of the series
DrunkenNukem - 7/23/2014, 5:09 AM
You guys better don´t dress up the 4 horseman like just some renegades from the 80s riding on harley davidson motorcycles, listening Guns n´ Roses..

don´t get me wrong i love G n´ R.
gambgel - 7/23/2014, 5:11 AM
so they still dont know what to do with Gambit? oh lord....
0bstreperous - 7/23/2014, 5:20 AM
No angel is sacrilege....

They'll definitely be using the last episodes of xmen evolution as ... an homage omage?

Mags having to really fight for power will be great especially with fassbender
McNyagano - 7/23/2014, 5:34 AM
eh whatever. This guy is the one that had originally made Apocalypse an alien and made him merge with Magneto. I'm very cautous about Kinberg's input in the script. He's the Goyer of Fox.
Nubase - 7/23/2014, 5:39 AM
First class and DOFP are superb movies, no one can deny that, really looking forward to Apoc
MCUfan1 - 7/23/2014, 5:58 AM
Dofp was really X-Men 4 more than a First Class sequel if you think about it. I wanted to see Magneto's Brotherhood do damage but no you kill them off screen so that you can fix continuity. Which you still managed to frick up.
GliderMan - 7/23/2014, 5:59 AM
No Quicksilver. Mystique goes good.
