Marvel Studios and James Gunn's space epic adventure Guardians of the Galaxy has reached another milestone at the box office and has also earned praise from Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.

[Guardians of the] Galaxy in some ways is the best Marvel movie ever,” Robert Downey Jr. told the press at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of The Judge. “And it’s odd for someone with — on occasion — an ego the size of mine to actually say that! We’re talking about how the Iron Mans and the Thors and the Captain Americas and the Avengers movies have afforded Marvel the opportunity to essentially take what was a third-tier, minor, kind of upstart bit of potential from one of their comic books series and say: ‘Look!’ It’s like you have a great quarterback, and his brother plays for another team, and then you say: ‘Look, this is their second cousin and we think he has a great arm and he should start.’ And then he goes and wins the Superbowl!” Downey then pinned the success of Guardians of the Galaxy on luck, producer Kevin Feige, and Walt Disney Studios. “The armature and breadth of what Disney has done in their ability to put things to market is unprecedented,” he said. Meanwhile, the James Gunn-directed Marvel adaptation has reached a new milestone at the box office. Disney reports that Guardians has crossed $500 million worldwide, earning $255.2 million domestically on Monday. The space epic looks set to pass Marvel's first 2014 outing, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which would make it the highest-grossing summer movie of the year. What do you think?

280-300 domestic
270-290 international (without China)
100-115 China (if it does as well as every CBM this year)
650-705 worldwide

Not bad for a bunch of a-holes
thunderforce - 8/27/2014, 10:01 AM
I don't think luck had anything to do with it .
Bekss - 8/27/2014, 10:01 AM
If RDJ said it then it's true.

All hail GotG.
minato808 - 8/27/2014, 10:03 AM
Have seen Winter Soldier and GOTG both multiple times and I still like Winter Soldier more but Guardians is definitely in my top 5 Marvel Studio movies.

TheAbaryMan369 - 8/27/2014, 10:10 AM
It seemed like just yesterday people were laughing at the idea of the movie reaching 200 Mil.
JoJo1982 - 8/27/2014, 10:10 AM
Of course he's praising the movie. He's goin to be in it soon ;)

Just joking

Best yes this is marvel studio's finest work, right next to Cap 2.

Jollem - 8/27/2014, 10:15 AM
the hype machine should get most of the credit. rdjr. is a hack. iron man 2 and 3 sucked
batz11 - 8/27/2014, 10:15 AM
Loved it, gotta see a couple more times (at least) in the theaters, will add to that total...
JoJo1982 - 8/27/2014, 10:15 AM
@omarvl

Honestly since it's huge opening, I believe this movie could reach 750-800 million, passing up DOFP as the highest grossing Cbm of 2014 worldwide
MarvelFan15 - 8/27/2014, 10:16 AM
Lets hope the remaining countries coming up can help get Guardians of the Galaxy to attempt a shot over a billion worldwide, China and Japan in particular. Let's hope the people in those 2 countries think of this as better than Transformers.
Doopie - 8/27/2014, 10:19 AM
he has a point
DrKinsolving - 8/27/2014, 10:19 AM
@JoJo1982

Haha, Nice, I've heard about those cartoons, I have to check it out.... and right on, I can't wait for the Inhumans movie
TheOverlord - 8/27/2014, 10:20 AM
CA:TWS, GOTG and XM:DOFP were all 5-star CBMs this year. We didn't have any in 2013. I personally liked CA the best, but it's splitting hairs, really - they were all fantastic. I hope the momentum carries into 2015. Really looking forward to A:AOU, but not feeling so optimistic about the rest.
Omarvls - 8/27/2014, 10:20 AM
@Jollem

Always being so negative or sarcastic when it comes to anything Marvel

But yeah Iron Man 2 sucked and Iron Man 3 was mediocre
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/27/2014, 10:20 AM
Guardians kicked ass and it deserves all this success.I've seen the movie four times.Wouldn't mind seeing it again.
Pending - 8/27/2014, 10:20 AM
It's gonna be crazy if this new ip manages to out gross every other cbm this year.
McNyagano - 8/27/2014, 10:21 AM
It'll be interesting to see if this hits 700 mil ww. I enjoyed, just not as good as cap 2 or DOFP imo.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/27/2014, 10:23 AM
@MarvelFan I love your enthusiasm.Keep it up my friend. This movie will be number one again this weekend.
Nomis - 8/27/2014, 10:23 AM
He must be hitting the hooch again.
Pasto - 8/27/2014, 10:25 AM
Best CBM of 2014. Best MCU film ever. Can't wait for the sequel. RDJ speaks truth.
LEEE777 - 8/27/2014, 10:25 AM
GOOD! ;)

Knew it would be the best comic book movie this year, so glad it actually was :P

:thumbs
0megaDaGod - 8/27/2014, 10:26 AM
Crazy how it's all come full circle. RDJ's role in Iron Man 1, combined with Favreau was the catalyst for everything that built up to this point

From one boss...

...to a team of bosses...

...and on to the next one.

0megaDaGod - 8/27/2014, 10:27 AM
And shit is just gonna be straight bananas when these two teams meet up

RebelVulcan - 8/27/2014, 10:29 AM
Oh look, the GOTG hate crowd have come out of their spider-holes.
'What a bunch of a-holes.'- Denarian Rael
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/27/2014, 10:31 AM
When I really look back, this is the best CBM of 2014.Now Marvel Studios, give me Black Panther and The Inhumans.A little Captain Marvel(Mar-Vell) and Carol Danvers team up movie wouldn't hurt either.Bring it.
Jollem - 8/27/2014, 10:31 AM
recently, two photons were bonded together to create a light molecule

think about the possibilities
MarvelFan15 - 8/27/2014, 10:32 AM
Thank you, @MARVELPSYCHO79.
JoJo1982 - 8/27/2014, 10:34 AM
@omega

Don't forget the Inhumans meeting up with them

And possibly the defenders too

Also the avengers team is looking at getting some more members

: D
DeusExSponge - 8/27/2014, 10:34 AM
Wowza! $500 million?! I thought that would be the max for GotG when it came to the box office and damn was I wrong! Congrats to the cast and crew that were involved with GotG and congrats to James Gunn!
