Following Marvel Studios' president confirming Edward Norton not being involved in the upcoming "Avengers" movie and the actor's agent responding in a heavy statement, the man of the moment has released a high road statement on his FaceBook page involving the dispute.

As most of you know, I don't like to talk much about the business of making movies because it means a lot to me to protect the audience's fullest enjoyment of the 'magic' that films can have. But I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and the Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond. So here goes: It seems it won't work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in "The Avengers." I sincerely hoped it could happen and be great for everyone but it hasn't turned out as we all hoped. I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be a part of the Hulk's long and excellent history. And I really can't thank the fans enough for how much enthusiasm you've sent me way about what Louis and I tried to do in our turn with the legend. It means a lot to me. I grew up with Banner and Hulk and have been a fan of every incarnation. I'm really proud, and very blessed, to have been one of them and will be thrilled to see him live on through other actors. Hulk is bigger than all of us, that's why we love him, right?

Sincerely,
Edward Norton

That pretty much says everything. So it seems to be real folks, and not a smoke screen like most of us hoped, wished, and dreamed. What do you think?

MrSuperheromoviefan - 7/12/2010, 12:26 PM
I don't know. Sounds like Marvel had a little talk with Norton.
xman - 7/12/2010, 12:26 PM
why does marvel hate the fans?
canadianturd - 7/12/2010, 12:29 PM
Norton comes off smelling like roses in all this. Feige really [frick]ed the fans on on this one. Way to go Mr. Hollywood!
ASSASSIN666 - 7/12/2010, 12:33 PM
A f**king class act all the way, too bad I can't say the same for Marvel. Between the bullshit reboots, and f**king up several castings Marvel really let us all down. I hope they realize how we the fans feel about the horrible choices they are making, after all we're only the ones spending our money to put in their pockets. No big deal right????????????????????????
JoshWilding - 7/12/2010, 12:33 PM
Oh well, I'm glad he took the high road and didnt make the slightly offensive sort of remarks that Feige did! Regardless, I think Marvel Studios can find an actor just as good, if not better, than Norton so just move on now people and "boycott" The Avengers if you like but only you will miss out...Marvel sure wont miss your one cinema ticket, lol! :P
BigbyBadWolf - 7/12/2010, 12:40 PM
You know there is so much more to this than what we are seeing. Between the money, the politics, and the pride, it's just a giant Hollywood mess. It's a shame because we, the fans, are the ones who suffer for it. The on again off again relationship between actors, writers, and studios just gets our hopes up then dashes them to pieces. They all talk about how much they care about the fans and how much our support means to them, but our voice rarely makes a difference in how the film progresses. I understand that Hollywood is a business and they want to make money. If they did not make money, films would not continue to be made. But really? Just admit it all boils down to the mighty dollar and quit pretending it's something else. I liked Norton in The Incredible Hulk, but I'm not sorry to see the drama between him and the studio go away.
TheQuestion - 7/12/2010, 12:43 PM
Norton could've totally dissed Marvel, but I'm glad he's more focused on trying to keep things as drama free for the fans as he can make it. He understands that the Hulk is bigger than him and has a legacy that outweighs any actor. I'm still sad to see him go, and it spoils a lot of the enthusiasm I had for Avengers. Marvel has to really make it up to the fans an do some serious damage control.
juanimeli - 7/12/2010, 12:50 PM
It's been a drama between Ed and Marvel for almost a year. Everything is about money and creative rights. He did what he wanted with Hulk, even surpassing the director. Maybe Norton also wanted more than a paycheck and with RDJ,CE,CH on board who knows if there was going to be problems. Maybe even Joss whedon had something to do. The fact is that will never know.
juanimeli - 7/12/2010, 12:53 PM
I've seen Norton on really small rolls and cameos in small budget movies. It is not an issue for him the money, only the control over the Banner he created.
Talontd - 7/12/2010, 1:00 PM
Hmmmm, so he took the "High Road".......Good man.
superdog - 7/12/2010, 1:01 PM

whatshisnameMD - 7/12/2010, 1:35 PM

CaptainFurious - 7/12/2010, 1:36 PM

Dakjaniels - 7/12/2010, 1:53 PM
Well played Mr. Norton. That's how you break the news to the fans. Take note Kevin Feige, this dude's an actor. Your the head of the studio, start acting like it.
ClaireLannister2016 - 7/12/2010, 1:53 PM
ok he's not playing Banner anymore. Boo hoo. Moving on.
liquidsnake88 - 7/12/2010, 1:56 PM
Unfortunate situation...Edward Norton, you are still the man. I still look forward to your future movies, and although I won't be able to catch you as Dr. Banner again, I'm sure the opportunities won't stop!
AngelAragiel - 7/12/2010, 1:57 PM
Kevin Feige came out of this looking more like an a-hole than Norton.
Marvel just kill some of my excitment over the Avengers movie.
CBArtist - 7/12/2010, 1:59 PM
Avengers will suck with or without Norton....Unless they recast Cap. Then it might have hope.
Ryguy88 - 7/12/2010, 1:59 PM
This really is not a big deal, it wont affect the outcome of the Avengers very much at all.
thetrubatman14 - 7/12/2010, 2:01 PM

DCMarvelFreshman - 7/12/2010, 2:03 PM
Continuity is my only problem with this. I don't want another Hulk relaunch.
ClaireLannister2016 - 7/12/2010, 2:09 PM
*toy story's reaction to Edward norton leaving the Avengers*
Buzz lightyear: Hold on, this is no time to be hysterical!
Hamm the Piggy Bank: This is the perfect time to be hysterical.
Rex the Green Dinosaur: Should we be HYSTERICAL?
Slinky Dog: No!
Mr. Potato Head: Yes!
Buzz Lightyear: Maybe! But not right now!
Ven0m - 7/12/2010, 2:09 PM
Your wrong there JoshW The whole point of making a movie is so I buy a ticket to go and see it. They are pissing a lot of people off and losing $$$$$ with each fan as furious as me.
GreenHalJordan - 7/12/2010, 2:13 PM
@ Starssapphire lol
and everyone, someone could have made this up, in fact it could be a way to draw in more people, by gettin em mad, marvel gets more attention, and when the time is right, BAM, Marvel tells the world it was a cover up and then all of those new fans and us are happy and the avengers makes more $$$! I hope its what theyre doin, but if not, we need to try to do sometin about this.
herrhitman - 7/12/2010, 2:16 PM
Since the Human Torch is now Captain America...

Edward Norton for Dr. Strange!
SuperDude001 - 7/12/2010, 2:17 PM
I know Marvel are not idiots but unlike DC nowadays they make rare big mistakes, and this is one of them!!!
At least Norton understands what the fans wanted!

Ahhhh... this is why I keep coming to this site. The entertainment. Certainly not for the "news," - what precious little of that exists here is lifted from other sites anyway. But this, this full-fledged hypocrisy and fanboy nerdism run amuck brings me hours of luaghter. Especially when it comes to a subject like this one. I've just finished reading hundreds of comments from people on this subject. Ed Norton not being Banner. Who gives a rat's ass?

But that's not the funny part. The funny part is when you go back and look at articles about Spider-man, or Fantastic 4, and read all the comments from people about how much ass Fox and Sony suck, and they should just give the rights to the characters back to Marvel, WHO KNOWS HOW TO DO THESE MOVIES RIGHT AND FOR THE FANS!

And I laugh and laugh and laugh until I can't freakin' breathe.

Then I come and read all the hateful comments towards Marvel over this one, tiny little inconsequential thing. People boycotting Marvel movies. Calling for the death of the studio head. It's a goddamn riot! And I laugh some more.

Because the funniest part about the whole thing is many of the people here DIDN'T LIKE THE DAMN HULK MOVIE TO BEGIN WITH!!!!! Either one of them. And now they want to KILL A GUY because he's not using the same actor from a movie they didn't even like, in a new movie, that even though it hasn't even STARTED FILMING YET, they already don't like!

I LOVE this site!!! It's like the Jerry Springer show without the fat chicks in tube tops.
JonF - 7/12/2010, 2:23 PM
Everyone calm down and grow up! This is a minor bump in the road! People that think this will ruin "Avengers" are just overreacting! In no way is the character of Bruce Banner essential to the Avengers, especially with Hank Pym around! Hell, the same could be said of the Hulk!! Let's get real! Even if this were the Defenders, you still wouldn't need Banner! How big of a role will he have anyway? C'mon. Just get over it!
yungtay4 - 7/12/2010, 2:23 PM
i thought every1 liked marvel, now that this happened its eff marvel??? I really don't see it as being THAT serious, its been a few days now, just get over it
zephyr - 7/12/2010, 2:26 PM
Norton should stick it to Marvel by going over to DC. I can see it now, EDWARD NORTON AS BARRY ALLEN IN THE FLASH.
lalosuper3001 - 7/12/2010, 2:29 PM
@JonF. You grow up! Avengers is ruined! do you hear me? RUINED! RUUUIINEEEDDD!!!!

...you get over it...
