Chris Hemsworth Shares Thoughts On Kenneth Branagh Passing On THOR Sequel!

Late last month, Marvel Studios set an official release date for the sequel to their Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor movie,
along with the unfortunate news that Branagh won't be returning to helm. And chatting recently with the L.A. Times' Hero Complex, the star behind the Mighty Avenger, Chris Hemsworth shared saddened thoughts on Branagh's decision. During San Diego Comic-Con, Hemsworth says:

“I’m really disappointed, Ken built that character and everything I know about the Thor world I learned while shoulder-to-shoulder with Ken. I learned so much from him. As long as he’s happy that’s the thing,” said Hemsworth, who left San Diego to return to the New Mexico set of ”The Avengers.” “I learned so much from Ken while we built [the first film] so at least I had that time with someone like that. The start of anything creative is the most important period in a way. That’s when the most can go wrong and Ken made sure we got it right.”

The article further quotes Hemsworth stating the studio will decide fairly soon on Branagh's replacement, and that hes left a mark that will carry forward on the franchise. And with the Don Payne-written script underway, Thor 2 is supposedly scheduled for filming May next year, near the release of Chris Hemsworth's 'Thor' reprisal in The Avengers.

Thor 2 primarily follows the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth), on a journey exploring the broader stakes for the Nine Realms, the dynamic of his relationship with his father, 'Odin' (Anthony Hopkins), as well love interest, 'Jane Foster' (Natalie Portman). Taking 'Thor' "literally" to other worlds, look for the sequel in theaters July 26, 2013.

Ugh I hate when they switch directors. Hopefully the next guy understands what to do with Thor.

@BooYa: When Branagh's departure was announced, all that was said was his decision to step down was "mutual and amicable" and that he'll remain onboard in a production capacity.

I'm just worried that Hopkins won't be coming back...

Although I am sad to see Branagh gone, I would like to see Marcus Nispel replace him as director... Thor was ok, but it wasn't awesome...the fights were too short, and Hemsworth wasn't believable as Thor...as Donald Blake on Earth, yea...but not amongst Tom Hiddleson and Anthoey Hopkins as Loki and Thor...I still strongly believe Marvel should have gotten an older actor to play Thor, I think Hemsworth is too young...I know Marvel wants an actor that can grow into the part, but he just didn't do Thor justice for me...bring on Avengers!!..

rottencotten I don't think Nispel is available. He has his hands full with the cinematic masterpiece CONAN-3D. With all the press he'll have to do after that film comes out, he'll have so many directing offers on the table that doing THOR2 may be a long shot. Let's keep our fingers crossed and pray as well.

I'll probably get killed for this but, what about Micheal Bay? With the right script and under Marvel supervision maybe he could work. You know there would be plenty of big(not using the E word) action sequences.

Honestly, I hope he departed because he didn't want to make a sequel. That may seem snobbish to some people, but it isn't HIS character (and his respective comics) to continue developing as he pleases. You should also keep in mind that although Thor 2 is supposed to be a standalone movie, not bridging towards another Avengers flick, it will be set AFTER the Avengers, a story that will definitely impact the next Thor film (considering how Loki is the main villain). Maybe he wanted his own continuity to work with.

The way I see it: as a superhero movie, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was definitely better than Green Lantern, but like that one, it tried to push too much into such a short span of time. It was the necessary prelude/introduction to what Thor is capable of. Kenneth Branagh was good, but there are better directors out there.

That's my optimistic take, anyway.

@Neobaggins, thanks for agreeing dude, you don't get that much on here...his film work with The Pathfinder, and what we have seen so far of Conan is what makes me think he would be perfect for a Thor sequal...but you are right, if Conan does good, he might just want to do a sequal to that...but I can cross my fingers and pray...

@Tainted87, I also agree with you, too much in a span of not even two hours...a lot more time should have been spent developing the mythos of Asgard...

eyesore Never be ashamed of acknowledging Bay's brilliance. People forget, he's a DIRECTOR, not a writer. He's a visionary like Snyder or the Watchowski Bros. I've watched Transformer films and thought about how other films would look with his style of directing and action sets. Not sure if THOR is the franchise for him, but Bay would be awesome on a number of CBM's.

Oh shit, I almost forgot. The directing of John Carter from Mars looks like the guy could do THOR justice.

But what we have to remember is; to display good writing, good actors and good directors, the budget and production values plays a major role in all this. Even the sound track.

i hate directors that do this and walk away from such good and successful films like this. this series is great and its going to do great at the box office no doubt. we need directors who direct cbm's like raimi and nolan did, they stuck with there films
Ceejay
Ceejay - 7/28/2011, 12:04 AM
He hasn't walked away from anything, he didn't sign up to direct an entire series of the same product in the first place. He's a director, no self respecting director wants to keep making the same project for years unless its their own thing they're bringing to the screen. Thor is a franchise, unless they sign someone up for two or more movies, you can't in any reality expect them to want to do the same thing all over again, there's little creative challenge in that!

I think Branaugh got to live his dream of putting Thor on screen. He doesn't need to prove to anyone that he can follow that up. I guess this means the next director to take up the flag has A LOT to live up to.

Though I wish he'd at least stayed on as a producer. At least we'd have the comfort of knowing he'd have something to say about the next people in line. Now If the other cast members drop out, THEN I'll be p&^%ed!

i'd rather lose a director than an actor (a major cast member, like Terrence Howard, or the LEAD, Edward Norton), in a franchise. as the Potter movies, changing directors might even be beneficial to the series, especially if they start the change from the first sequel.

as for the replacement...no, i don't want Ridley Scott. save him for a future WONDER WOMAN pic (that project just fits HIS bill).

FORGET Nispell..Pathfinder sux BIG TIME...and i ain't too confident bout this new Conan flick.

Gore Verbinski is an interesting choice. the same goes with Matthew Vaughn.

but, my ideal choice for Thor 2 would be GUILLERMO DEL TORO. c'mon...his cinematic style just SCREAMS: I'm Thoooooorrr....!!! well, not in that screeching Conan O'Brien's voice, at least.

Saw Cap over the weekend, and the end credit trailer looked sweeeeeeet for The Avengers movie. Thor's new outfit, even Loki looked different. The way Marvel will piece together all theses characters is great. Can't wait for Thor 2 as well as all the others.

Wasn't all that impressed with Thor to begin with, maybe the new director will
-get rid of the ridiculous costumes and make the asgardians look like real functional warriors
-find the correct pacing for the movie the whole way through.
-present a real threat for our hero to overcome
