Speaking with The Capital, actor Mark Ruffalo, who've voiced his opposition to the proposal allowing hydrofracking in New York, further backed his opinion. However, this time he compared the opposition to his Incredible Hulk role in next year's The Avengers.

Actor Mark Ruffalo says his leading role in fighting hydrofracking in New York bears more than a passing resemblance to his leading role in the new Avengers movie. “The great thing about the Avengers and our superhero mythology is that they are people that fight for the common man over impossible odds, and for the betterment of the whole,” said Ruffalo, who plays the Incredible Hulk. “So in some ways, that whole mythology feeds into what I’m trying to do here.”

For those who don't know, Hydrofracking is a new development in natural gas extraction, which makes mining for natural gas in dense shale more economically possible, where before it was not. And as mentioned before, Ruffalo has voiced being against it in the past.

Marvel's The Avengers is the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner with Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston, directed by Joss Whedon, Marvel's The Avengers will be released May 4, 2012.

Mastyrwerk - 11/30/2011, 12:47 PM
First?
headlopper - 11/30/2011, 12:49 PM
"The great thing about the Avengers and our superhero mythology is that they are people that fight for the common man over impossible odds, and for the betterment of the whole...”

Need to send him to Congress.
Mastyrwerk - 11/30/2011, 12:49 PM
D'oh! Ok. Still haven't gotten first yet. Matter of time.
I like him. Pretty generic comparison, but his heart is in the right place.
DCMarvelFreshman - 11/30/2011, 12:52 PM
@Zombie137 Sorry, I assumed everyone knew. It's there now.
redleaf - 11/30/2011, 12:54 PM
So he thinks he's a superhero by protesting against hydrofracking. lol
hawkeye4ever - 11/30/2011, 12:54 PM
it is a very common word now, i seen 5-10 articles about it and a few news pieces. Not trying to be rude or any thing.
mrHJK - 11/30/2011, 12:58 PM
@redleaf: he's a hero for doing what he can to fight for something important, yeah
redleaf - 11/30/2011, 1:02 PM
Not really. He's an activist. Do you know both sides of the issue on hydrofracking? Can't call him a hero for that.
imnotahero - 11/30/2011, 1:03 PM
and here i thought it had something to do with Battlestar Galactica.... jk.
kriswone - 11/30/2011, 1:03 PM
Watch the documentary "Gasland" and if you aren't mad in the first 15 minutes you own a lot of stock in the gas/oil companies.

Imagine turning on the faucet in your kitchen sink and water comes out, then you try to light it on fire with a bic, and it does, flaming so much it burns your house down. Then it gets worse, the gas companies say it's not their fault, you no longer have drinkable water and have to prove that the gas companies did this.
Greengo - 11/30/2011, 1:04 PM
What an ass.

It's bad enough they replaced Norton with this f'n guy, know he has to spew his self-righteousness on us?

Don't spoil the movie with your activism, douche bag. Yes you can have one without the other.
RorMachine - 11/30/2011, 1:10 PM
Dudes a crusader, he's all over Twitter. I will never come down on anyone for trying to make a difference even if I don't always agree with his politics and no matter what profession he happens to have.

Side note, Hydro-Fracking. lol. FRACKING TOASTERS!
headlopper - 11/30/2011, 1:14 PM
"Hydro-fraking"...ha , that's what SHE said!
Greengo - 11/30/2011, 1:26 PM
@Ror: you don't have to. You agree with him. There are plenty of other people who just want to go see the Avengers who don't care, or don't agree entirely. Why alienate those people?

I think fracking probably is dangerous what with gas in the pipes and unexplained earthquakes in Oklahoma.

But why asociate Avengers into his personal agenda?

I don't feel like it's a political issue.
JackBauer - 11/30/2011, 1:28 PM
I don't know enough about this Hydro-fracking to comment on that.

Celebrity or pseudo celebrity activists never influence my opinion on anything, but I applaud his enthusiasm for his cause.
Greengo - 11/30/2011, 1:35 PM
Correction: my bad I don't know if RorMachine agrees with him or not : )
MassExecutions - 11/30/2011, 1:43 PM
From what I've read Hydro-Fracking is something that needs to happen, but we need to know more about. Natural gas is way cleaner than other fossil fuels, and fracking will probably make it way cheaper. We've just got to find uniform ways to make sure drinking water contamination doesn't happen, and believe it or not, also the earthquake thing. Some signs actually show it may be cleaner than other mining and drilling techniques. Just have to be sure not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
grifter - 11/30/2011, 1:49 PM
Politics on comicbookmovie.com, sheesh I get enough politics and Government crap on FB already.
RorMachine - 11/30/2011, 1:50 PM
I also don't know enough about it to agree or disagree I just respect his passion. It's not alienating someone who doesn't care just because he also happens to be in The Avengers. Will they expect The Hulk to be a lib crusader in the movie cos of Ruffalo's beliefs?
Greengo - 11/30/2011, 1:54 PM
Yes. Absolutely. That's what I'm afraid of:

A liberal Hulk.

J/k. I love our discussions @Ror.

What a cool dude : )

Ruffalo seems like a stand up guy n is a great actor, but I really do struggle 2 c him as Hulk... To me he looks 2 big n healthy 4 the role, always imagined Banner 2 look smaller, skinnier n leaner...

Joaquin Pheonix would've been an ideal Hulk 4 me, guy might not b so skinny anymore, but he has that intense 'crazy eyed' look 2 him, could definitely bring a Hannibal Lecter appeal 2 the role!
marantaz - 11/30/2011, 2:30 PM
Ror, Greengo - Not yet for Ruffalo in the movies, he hasn't got the star power, but the series Del Toro is doing, it's highly likely; Del Toro could easily use the series to preach his sense of morality. Marvel would be better off getting Ruffalo out as soon as possible... he's a loon, really, and he's going to alienate more than he draws... not to mention he's a mumbler.

The Hulk TV show was run into the ground by Bill Bixby, the star, because he assumed control and thought he knew better than a couple decades worth of comic book story tellers. Add to that the activism of many in Hollywood today, who are for the most part on the wrong side of the majority, and you've got a prescription for disaster if you're trying to build a franchise based on a comic book hero. While Hollywood might want you to believe these stars are worthy of you dollars, the reality is that activists Hollywood spells box office disaster. His presence concerns me for the success of the Avengers, and future Hulk movies.

As for fracking for natural gas, ask your Congressman and research it yourself, don't take the word of some actor.
Zombie137 - 11/30/2011, 2:39 PM
Thanks, I just reread my post and i sounded like a total DICK. Really didn't mean it like that.
SuperSpiderMan5778 - 11/30/2011, 2:50 PM
why the hyrdofrack would he use that as an example?
SuperSpiderMan5778 - 11/30/2011, 2:51 PM
oh to make himself look smart....douchery at its worse
MrReese - 11/30/2011, 3:00 PM

GUNSMITH - 11/30/2011, 4:15 PM
FRACK.
WinterSoldier24 - 11/30/2011, 4:22 PM
Aww, I'm kind of bumbed that he didn't mention the fact that The Incredible Hulk is like the modern-day Shakespeare =P

He should own this [frick]ing role though
Godzillafart - 11/30/2011, 7:06 PM
@Greengo: Ruffalo was being interviewed on The Capital Tonight, a political program. So, yeah, it was completely appropriate for him to be talking about hydrofracking. It's not like he brought it up during a press conference about The Avengers.
adapunisher - 11/30/2011, 8:10 PM
Isn't hydrofracking like waterboarding?
rbfn04 - 11/30/2011, 8:29 PM
Hydra fraking? Is that what they gon do in the Avangers? Frak some Hydra agents? Again? fail Marvel. Fail....
SuspenseSmith - 11/30/2011, 8:41 PM
What the frack is hydrofracking... sounds dirty.
SuspenseSmith - 11/30/2011, 8:44 PM
I hate it when actors get all political, even when I agree with them.

Somehow being an actor makes them feel entitled to make statements all the time... stupid.
SuspenseSmith - 11/30/2011, 8:46 PM
As long as his preachiness doesn't come out in the film, like Halle Berry's "There's nothing wrong with anyone" in X3... that was cringe inducingly blatant character shift and "slippage" (when you see the actor behind the character).
dancingmonkey08 - 12/1/2011, 4:13 AM
The Avengers fight the Cylons with water, its gonna be awesome because it leads to a wet t-shirt contest between Scarlett Johansson, Tricia Helfer & Grace Park! Nice! lol

But seriously have never heard of hydrofracking so not my business
tjgosurf - 12/1/2011, 5:37 AM
I think those of you that are complaining about being able to light tap water on fire shouldn't focus all their attention on one documentary. Maybe I don't know ask the resident Petroleum Engineer? But that would be too difficult, and would be smart. Dude can light that on fire due to naturally occurring methane in his water. It was debunked shortly after Gasland came out.
fadersdream - 12/1/2011, 7:29 AM
I'm a Petroleum Geologist. Hydro frak is a pretty bad thing. We know it is. There are reasons why it's done in the remote or impoverished places that it is done.

Dig a tunnel, drop a bomb inside of it to crack the rock, pump super light and super heavy boiling fluids into the tunnel, gather oil.
negativeions - 12/1/2011, 11:27 AM
Morand knows nothing of Hydrofracking. The article is misleading. It makes it seem like hydrofracking is a good thing. What a joke. What is this site corporate propaganda? Do natural gas companies advertise on comicbookmovie?? Then get your facts straight.

Hydrofracking is absolutely horrendous.

If you're not convinced you should do something about it after watching GASLAND then there is something wrong with you. It wasn't debunked at all. Haven't you ever heard of corporate PR? That's what all these PR firms do they "debunk" sources of information to protect their clients.
