Only days after it was revealed a Guardians of the Galaxy movie will be expanding Marvel Studios' cinematic universe in 2014, the anticipated release date that was announced earlier this year has been pushed back from May to August. Specifically, Box office Mojo exclusively reports that Walt Disney studios' Buena Vista distributor has moved the yet-to-be-announced Marvel flick from May 16, 2014 to August 1, 2014.

Beyond spacing out the release of the studios' other 2014 film, Captain America 2 (April 4), this move also makes room for other blockbuster films. These films, all sequels, include Transformers 4 (June 27), the untitled X-Men: First Class sequel (July 18), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2), and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (May 23).

Despite fairly reliable sources already confirming that Guardians of the Galaxy will be the currently untitled project, we can expect the official announcement at next week's San Diego Comic-Con convention. Marvel Studios' panel for Iron Man 3 will kick off July 14, 6:00pm – 7:00pm, at Hall H. What do you think?

Marvel Studios has dubbed “Guardians of the Galaxy” a “big space epic” that will introduce various cosmic entities from the Marvel Comics universe. The superhero team first appeared in “Marvel Super-Heroes #18” in 1969, created by Arnold Drake & Gene Colan. In 2008, the team was rebooted by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning in “Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2) #1.” The team's live-action roster will include Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. And also Thanos, the villain who made his live-action debut unexpectedly during Marvel's The Avengers mid-credits stinger, is expected to reprise his role. With a screenplay written by Nicole Perlman, a graduate of Disney's screenwriting program, no director is yet attached. And distributor Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has scheduled “Guardians of the Galaxy” for release on August 1, 2014.

it IS the mystery movie haha
ksommer - 7/3/2012, 11:01 AM
Interesting... I wonder if they'll keep the June release date for Guardians and maybe August is Black Panther now. Huge announcements coming soon per Agent_M who tweeted me earlier.
mawilli4 - 7/3/2012, 11:03 AM
This will take a lot of special effects work. So I hope for a LONG post-production on it. it's going to take a lot of work to not make it cheesy. just use the comics as storyboards and you'll be fine.
JordanKing - 7/3/2012, 11:07 AM
With Cap planned for April, Spidey in May and whatever WB/DC has planned for that year, there should be a little breathing space in between, so yeah it had to happen.

There was me thinking Bay's TMNT would be the one to back down.
superotherside - 7/3/2012, 11:10 AM
Not a big move. Perhaps they're making room for Ant-Man?
Curmudgeon - 7/3/2012, 11:11 AM
From Variety's piece, it didn't sound like GOTG was in that spot all along, it was being fast tracked to take that spot.

It could be that this is whatever was in that spot before, being delayed to make room for GOTG in May.

Or I could be just speculating wildly.
ksommer - 7/3/2012, 11:11 AM
@JKM I think getting away from Spidey might have been the ultimate goal since Spidey is still Marvel. I believe they still get a cut of the profits don't they?
ksommer - 7/3/2012, 11:12 AM
@batlizard11 I believe that too. There are conflicting reports. They originall had two dates, May 16th and June 29th. Then they jumped up to April for Cap 2. One report says that was the June 29th date and others say the June one is still out there.

Who knows. We'll find out at SDCC.

@mawilli4

I'ts going to take a lot of work just to not make Rocket Racoon cheesy, with him they could get it really good or really bad, it's one way or the other.

But I have high hopes for this movie, seeing how Thor, a hard-to-work concept for a movie did so well, with the increased budget for films (see Ironman 3) and with the Green Lantern example of how not make a space movie there could come something really epic from this and it could even turn out to be the space epic that GL was attempting to be.
Viltrumite - 7/3/2012, 11:17 AM
I'm guessing this is to avoid competition with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Sony had a May 2014 release date for that in place since last August, I think.
ksommer - 7/3/2012, 11:23 AM
@IM53, I don't think that's too much to ask! :)
ksommer - 7/3/2012, 11:28 AM
@IM53, I think it's a little premature to compare Rocket to Yoda. Yoda had four movies of build up before going bazerk on Count Dooku. It caught everyone off guard because of the build up.
marvel72 - 7/3/2012, 11:28 AM
as long as it comes out in 2014,they can release whenever they want.
EstimatedProphet - 7/3/2012, 11:28 AM
To those commenting about Rocket Raccoon: He's not going to be in the movie. Latino Review said they'ed be traveling back in time from the 31st century, which means it's the original GotG, which means no Raccoon or Groot.
plasticman - 7/3/2012, 11:28 AM
I think you will all agree that we anticipate a Gaurdians of the Galaxy movie over a Black Panther movie. I see this as being Black Panther that is pushed back and GOTG is getting the earlier date to build anticipation for Black Panther. Storywise it may make sense in story progression to see GOTG prior to BP.
evyllsummer - 7/3/2012, 11:29 AM
Is this because the big announcement was met with a colossal MEH?
LMB10 - 7/3/2012, 11:29 AM
They had too, Spidey comes out pretty soon beforehand. They wouldn't want to pit a new franchise against Spidey.
ATrueHero1987 - 7/3/2012, 11:29 AM
I knew it, after all, originally they had this coming 2 weeks after TASM2 comes out!
DanteSparda - 7/3/2012, 11:30 AM
@batlizard11

Well, the key for this movie it the characters, as it should be, that's the most interesting part of the comic, not the fact that it takes place in space or the alien races and cosmic threats that they have to face, it's the diversity of characters in the team, they should first market it as a space epic and a super hero sci-fi movie, then after the second trailer they should launch video featuretes of each character, showing their personalities and abilities.

I recomend you to read this book, I started reading it because it was part of my Secret Invasion collection, after the second issue I read I became a fan.
AsianVersionOfET - 7/3/2012, 11:30 AM
Meh.
sexfoodcomics - 7/3/2012, 11:30 AM
They haven't officially announced anything yet , so saying its been " pushed back" seems a bit premature. The original rumored info could have been wrong to begin with. I'll wait for the official marvel announcement.
JimmyPesto - 7/3/2012, 11:30 AM
Whoa, I didnt know Kratos was a Marvel character
JordanKing - 7/3/2012, 11:31 AM
@ksommer Yeah, I believe they do still get a cut of Spidey's profits. Even if it isn't much, that movie's success could generate more revenue for the comics at least.

CaptainObvious - 7/3/2012, 11:34 AM
The movie would have come out between ASM2 and the Apes sequel. Moving it to August-where there are currently no other releases-is a smart move. Plus, now they can move Captain America 2 into the summer movie season by giving it GOTG's original date.
ATrueHero1987 - 7/3/2012, 11:34 AM
@sexfoodcomics Yea, that would be funny if Black Panther really is the secret Marvel movie.lol

TonyChu - 7/3/2012, 11:37 AM
At least it is still in 2014.
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 11:39 AM
Hopefully this means we'll be gettig Marvel flicks during 2014. But, goddangit, I can't wait that long just to finally watch a GotG movie. But time flies. We'll see it soon enough. Plus, I agree with @53 on Rocket Racoon. That little son of a gun won't need to be worried about. He'll do fine. :)

This will open a whole new direction for the future Marvel films. It'll be big, my friends. :)
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 11:40 AM
@53...Good list. Now I know where to start. :)
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 11:42 AM
@bats - I'm pretty sure that we'll those guys sooner on the big screen, my friend. And to answer your question, I am not too sure about that. Maybe they have, but I'm not too sure. :)
Rick9719 - 7/3/2012, 11:44 AM
Seriously? They have yet to announce Ant Man, Hulk 2, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Shield, The Vision & Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Ms. Marvel, Power Man and Iron fist, Spider woman, Black Panther, The Falcon, Winter soldier, or Sub-Mariner, but they are putting Guardians of the Galaxy at the top of their list?!? Nothing against the Guardians, but is this REALLY the top priority for the next Marvel film?!?
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 11:46 AM
My imagination can't stop on the possibilities that we'll get from GotG. An all-out battle on Earth (or another planet) with Thanos against the Avengers and the GotG. I hope it's not too much to put in Nova along with GotG and the Avengers. The Avengers will have new recruits as well (Black Panther, Ant-Man/Giant-Man, Wasp, Vision, Ms. Marvel, War Machine).
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 11:47 AM
Hmm, well, maybe that's a bit too much to ask for (all of those characters against Thanos). But, a guy can dream, right? :)
PsyGuy - 7/3/2012, 11:48 AM
OH NO bad sign....
Cosmic1 - 7/3/2012, 11:49 AM
I guess everyone knew who the characters in Star Wars were before it was released and maybe back then talking aliens were acceptable and they are not now? I don't see what everyone's concern about this is Rocket Raccoon will steal the show, talking trees and animals that act like people that's what got Disney to where they are today the studio has a lot of experience with that stuff I think they will do it justice. When Rocket Raccoons 4 issue mini series came out it was a hit, even i thought it was odd when i saw the first issue, but once i started reading it I couldn't put it down, granted I was a tween back then, but isn't it Disney's job to keep the kid in us alive.
dopemaster - 7/3/2012, 11:50 AM
I thought something like this might happen... I also wouldn't be surprised if we got 3 movies in 2014!!
gambgel - 7/3/2012, 11:51 AM
"Not a big move. Perhaps they're making room for Ant-Man?"

Id LOVE that!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 12:06 PM
Hell, I don't need a beer to go on talking about Thanos, the MCU, GotG, Nova. But when I do drink beer, a little pizza would go well.

Heheh, :P
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 12:08 PM
@batz - LoL, cool. Yeah, just keeping an open mind on the new direction of the MCU, man. It's [frick]ing unbelieveable. Just.......wow. :D
