GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Co-Auther Andy Lanning “Eager” To See the Movie

Taking into account that it's based on their 2008 lineup of interstellar heroes, Andy Lanning & Dan Abnett have shared their excitement for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy via statement!

As announced at Comic-Con and showcased via concept art, Marvel Studios' live-action Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation will focus on the superhero team's 2008 incarnation. This is likely due to the reboot, penned by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, being considered more “modernized” than the 1969 original 31st-Century lineup.

In learning that Marvel Studios was adding the interstellar heroes to their cinematic universe, Andy Lanning offered Newsarama a statement on behalf of Abnett and himself. Expressing their excitement, while thanking others involved in addition to commenting on whether they're involved with the film, the statement reads:

“Dan and I are really excited to see the Guardians of the Galaxy make it to the big screen, especially as it would appear to be the iteration of the team established during our run on the title. We will be eager to see the film along with all the fans of cosmic stories.

One thing we'd like to go on the record with is that we owe a huge debt of thanks to the great stories of our predecessors, in particular, Jim Starlin and Keith Giffen, these guys are the giants on whom we stood. Beyond that, we're sorry but we really don't know anything [about the movie], so we can't make any further comment.”

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

From a screenplay by Nicole Perlman and Chris McCoy, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

Spidey31 - 8/13/2012, 2:31 PM

Moakynubs - 8/13/2012, 2:31 PM
I love GOTG. I'm really excited for this because it's such a curve ball from marvel.
marvel72 - 8/13/2012, 2:38 PM
its gonna be awesome, definetly one of the best cosmic comic books ever!

dan abnett lives in maidstone, kent uk about 13 miles driving distance from where i live, how cool is that.
nuclearpriest - 8/13/2012, 2:39 PM
Whether this movie lives or dies is completely dependent upon whom they get to direct it. That announcement will tell all.
BenderdickCumPatch - 8/13/2012, 2:42 PM
Is this a dream that this film is happenng?
shiverman20 - 8/13/2012, 2:44 PM
This whole Marvel Studios thing just feels too good to be true, but 6 movies into the 'series' and it's better and better each time! Pixar are the only other studio I have this much faith in
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 8/13/2012, 2:45 PM
The original team would have been a cool choice but we'll see
Hawksblueyes - 8/13/2012, 2:48 PM
Kudo's to him for giving Starlin props. Everything the modern version of TGOTG have gone through, has been direct continuations of Starlins' original Captain Marvel and Warlock runs. Those books were WAY ahead of their time.
dancingmonkey08 - 8/13/2012, 2:51 PM
My non-comic friends are iffy about this movie, this team doesnt have the same cool factor as the Avengers. It will take some convincing to get people to go see this. I have personally never read the comic but I loved their appearance in EMH cartoon so I will defintely go see this movie. Plus I have not lost faith in Marvel Studios, love anything by them!

@nuclearpriest
very true

@yossarian
As always I thank you for the pics, certain parts of me thank you and everyone thanks you and now I will be in bunk
OriginalGuardiansPlease - 8/13/2012, 2:51 PM
not going to bother seeing this...im still pissed they couldnt fit Starhawk or Major Victory in there....

hell Vance is the only character to have been on both teams...he made the most sense out of the bunch. You don't need to explain his entire back story.

Thanks Marvel for showing a lack of respect so far towards the original guardians
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/13/2012, 2:53 PM
@nuclearpriest I can't wait to see Marvel's list of directors they want for this movie.
SageMode - 8/13/2012, 2:57 PM
BRING IT!!!!!!

UrbanKnight - 8/13/2012, 3:11 PM
Marvel is so [frick]in lucky that nerds run their shit not suits!!!
Id be nicer if they dug a lil deeper in their projects like IM but they are livin the geek dream.

Maybe they arent trying to burn themselves out so fast so they are saving great stuff for later, i hope.

Come on WB get it togetha!
longbowhunter - 8/13/2012, 3:13 PM
DnA's cosmic Marvel stuff was some of the most original work to come outta the House Of Ideas in years. I'm glad not only is it being recognized but also rewarded with a live action feature. I wish I could take my cat to see this movie when the time comes. He looks like Rocket Racoon.
marvel72 - 8/13/2012, 3:16 PM

It'd be weird if he wasn't excited.
Pahenya - 8/13/2012, 3:28 PM
the original team would be better...just cant take the f'n raccoon seriously...gonna be a tough translation to the screen
Spidey31 - 8/13/2012, 3:32 PM

YOSS

Damn, whos that?
ThatOneDude - 8/13/2012, 3:35 PM
Drax FTW!!
bbarber2323 - 8/13/2012, 3:36 PM
Im not trolling here. I just don't see a talking, gun toting raccoon being an awesome addition to the MCU. I'm actually dreading any scene someday of Tony Stark talking to this raccoon. I mean somebody tell me why you guys are looking forward to this??
SageMode - 8/13/2012, 3:39 PM
PAHENYA

Just look at movies like STAR WARS and LORD OF THE RINGS. If done correctly, ROCKET RACCOON can work onscreen.
SageMode - 8/13/2012, 3:43 PM
BBARBER2323

Simple.......cause MARVEL IS WINNING. :-).
Optimus83 - 8/13/2012, 3:48 PM
¡¡¡I cant wait for this movie!!!
ckal - 8/13/2012, 3:51 PM
LOVE DNA.

Within the last 5/6 years they have made some of my favorite runs on titles I have ever read. They truly made cosmic Marvel for the current generation.

Bring them back on cosmic Marvel!!
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/13/2012, 3:51 PM
Kevin Feige did say at Comic-Con that there will be more announcements about GOTG in the next coming months.I hope Nova,Quasar, and Adam Warlock will be in this movie too.I like the 2008 team way more than the team from the 90s comics.
ckal - 8/13/2012, 3:53 PM
I really think they need to add another character or two to that line up, though.

Adam Warlock and Nova I would LOVE, more than love to see.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/13/2012, 3:53 PM
@yossarian That ass is beautiful! Now I want a white woman!
ckal - 8/13/2012, 3:53 PM
Forgot to add Quasar. I am embarrassed now.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/13/2012, 3:55 PM
@ckal Great minds think alike.Nova and Warlock have to be involved.
siggisuperman - 8/13/2012, 3:58 PM
I want Drax, Nova, Starlord, Quasar, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamorra. Adam Warlock would be cool as well
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/13/2012, 4:02 PM
@ckal I want Marvel to make an Iron Fist movie so badly.Danny Rand would be so badass.I think Danny's training should look like Bruce's in Batman Begins, but with superpowers and a superpowered Shaolin temple.Iron Fist has lots of potential to be a blockbuster.
marvel72 - 8/13/2012, 4:21 PM
@ yossarian

i'm more of a tit man myself but saying that i do appreciate a fine arse when i see one.

@ MARVELPSYCHO79

i would love to see nova, quaser & warlock but personally i think marvel are gonna have trouble with warlock.

warlock first appearence was in fantastic four 66(cocoon form) & 67(humanoid form)& we all know who own the rights to the fantastic four universe of characters.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/13/2012, 4:27 PM
@marvel72 Marvel might have the rights to Adam Warlock.Marvel has the rights to Namor and he's a mutant and Marvel has Black Panther and he first appeared in the Fantastic Four comic. It depends on what characters Marvel signed away to Fox with the FF.
SageMode - 8/13/2012, 4:28 PM
MARVEL72

Im pretty sure Marvel has the rights to Adam Warlock.

Similar issue how Black Panther first debuted in FF also, but Marvel has his rights.

Gearhead - 8/13/2012, 4:30 PM
NOVA ! Please!! he turned into one of my favorite heroes up there with spider after i read his comics
marvel72 - 8/13/2012, 4:33 PM
@ MARVELPSYCHO79
@ sagemode

there was an article about marvel & fox in talks about extending the daredevil rights for a few cosmic characters i.e silver surfer & galactus.

warlock might be included in that deal they're trying to struck.

its also like they ain't aloud to use super skrull.

we'll have to wait & see,fingers crossed.
SkateandDestroy88 - 8/13/2012, 4:36 PM
Looks really Awesome. Imagine if you rebooted a comic book series and then 3 years later Marvel Studios tells you they want to make into a blockbuster.
MarkV - 8/13/2012, 4:39 PM
Why, Marvel, why?

Pahenya - 8/13/2012, 4:39 PM
SageMode

Maybe, IF george lucas or peter jackson were helming OR if the typical Disney formula is used... I've got an idea...let's add howard the duck to the team!...the raccoon doesn't fit. He needs to be replaced IMO
NeoBaggins - 8/13/2012, 5:00 PM
Super interested in this one. If the cast and budget are there to bring this to life, it could blow everything away. The idea alone is worth a billion dollars.

The trailer should induce pants shitting. Yes, my anticipation is through the roof.

Also aware that this is one of those things that can be really good... or really bad. Production is key on this. It can't lack or be cheap in any aspect.
Ranger14 - 8/13/2012, 5:01 PM
"just cant take the f'n raccoon seriously"

Yes. All those who diss Rocket Raccoon have a point. I mean, look how unpopular and what a failure Yoda was on screen.

*end sarcasm*

MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/13/2012, 5:09 PM
@marvel72 I bet Marvel has the rights to Adam Warlock because Warlock had his own series in the 90s.I think it was the early 90s when Marvel signed a lot of their film rights away because of bankruptcy.Fox might just have Doom,Silver Surfer,Galactus, and Negative Zone villains/Annihillus.I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel had the rights to the Shi'ar Empire because Fox has rights to all the mutants in the X-Men universe. Also,Marvel has the rights to the Inhumans and they first appeared in the Fantastic Four comics.
Namor - 8/13/2012, 5:13 PM
[frick] that, i want to see the Raccoon on screen badly! If u don't, then simply don't see it! Don't try ruining it for others with ur crying and whinging about it. Just move on, and find something else that intrests u..

Rocket Raccoon, ur the man!
Durf - 8/13/2012, 5:23 PM
So looking forward to this!
NeoBaggins - 8/13/2012, 5:32 PM
I can see the worries about Rocket, but far as I'm concerned, he HAS TO BE in the movie. It's a cosmic fantasy film and should fit right inline with everything else. Take it back to the glory days of the 80s when adventure films captivated with it's strange characters.

I remember the day I bought RR #1 in a 4 issue series. Hated waiting for the next book and it prompted me to start drawing more animal-based mutant characters.
beane2099 - 8/13/2012, 5:43 PM
We just had a movie about a talking teddy bear make 300 million+ dollars this summer and someone's getting all ants in the pants about a talking raccoon?
