Marvel's ABC TV Series Greenlit, Titled S.H.I.E.L.D; Joss Whedon Co-Writing & May Direct

First announced with Joss Whedon officially signing on to write and direct The Avengers highly-anticipated sequel, details for Marvel's mystery ABC spin-off series have finally been revealed. The ever-reliable Deadline has learned not only what the live-action show will be about, but also Whedon's role(s) in its development.

The infamous site reveals that the live-action series has been greenlit, and will revolve around the fictional peacekeeping organization that's been well-established in the Marvel cinematic universe as the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division; better known as S.H.I.E.L.D.

In addition, the report adds that Joss Whedon will pen the pilot with his brother, Jed Whedon & his wife Maurissa Tancharoen. And set to start immediately, Whedon may also direct the pilot if his schedule allows it. The aforementioned writing team will also executive produce the pilot with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.

There's no word on whether the S.H.I.E.L.D. characters from the movies, notably Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill, will reprise their roles. However, we can surely expect the show to open doors for other S.H.I.E.L.D. characters from the comics, that wouldn't fit in the movies. This series will be considered Marvel's first live-action TV project even though they're many in the works. What do you think?

KaneVonDoom - 8/28/2012, 6:24 PM
Whaaaaa?!?! Didn't really see this coming. Hope they do it more like Clone Wars than Star Trek.... That'd be huge.
ClaireLannister2016 - 8/28/2012, 6:27 PM
Awesome! Bring it on!
JatevinM - 8/28/2012, 6:29 PM
Maybe I'll finally get to know what the hell happened in Budapest
Spidey91 - 8/28/2012, 6:30 PM

Hammbone - 8/28/2012, 6:33 PM
A couple of actors that could play either Luke Cage or Black Panther in the upcoming Marvel Movies are Robert Christopher Riley or Eli Harris both were in Bourne Lagacy. Yeah Bring it on.
80sFace - 8/28/2012, 6:33 PM
So what does it mean? SHIELD agents interacting with other Marvel heroes and villains?
ksommer - 8/28/2012, 6:36 PM
Awesome! Cant wait!
TheAlexLynch - 8/28/2012, 6:37 PM
This means it'll be about SHIELD agents and their average missions.
DrDoom - 8/28/2012, 6:38 PM
I'd kind of prefer them to focus on the movie universe, to be honest. I don't want to have to stop a Marvel movie marathon halfway through to watch a show.
RorMachine - 8/28/2012, 6:43 PM
A show only revolving around SHIELD sounds like a snoozefest to me, but obviously Whedon's involvement instantly raises it ..hopefully they will interact with other Marvel heroes too though.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 8/28/2012, 6:43 PM
$200,000 shillings says it will be very reminiscent of Mission Impossible.
JerBear - 8/28/2012, 6:43 PM
YYEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!
himynameisnik - 8/28/2012, 6:44 PM
knew it! so happy! Hope they bring in like Clay Quatermain, Sidney Levine, Carol Danvers and everyone. I think Sam Jackson should be in like 1 out of 10 episodes so he's just like the figurehead who pops in every now and then, Hill and Sitwell could run the operation with Hawkeye and Black Widow making the odd appearence
Limehead - 8/28/2012, 6:45 PM

[frick] YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This sounds [frick]ing brilliant, I hope ABC, Marvel and Disney realize the gold mine they are sitting on and just make this THE BEST TV show out there. [frick]ing awesome. Now we need to take out Maria Hill from How I Meet Your Mother and we are all set.
WruceBane - 8/28/2012, 6:49 PM
This is awesome news on so many levels. Avengers was great, but Joss really excels at serial storytelling, and building characters across a season's arc. And SHIELD is a great device to explore the rest of the Marvel universe.
DEATHbyEXILE - 8/28/2012, 6:50 PM
NosferatuZodd - 8/28/2012, 6:50 PM
now they can introduce T'Challa!!! notice i called him "T'challa" instead of Black Panther. so that makes me cool!!
aztecRaingod - 8/28/2012, 6:50 PM
Crazy.I bet it will be a little like X-files, only with Superheroes moreso than aliens.
BruceLeroy - 8/28/2012, 6:51 PM
This would be an incredibly smart move on Marvel's part if it's true.

Making a show about Shield would be an extremely easy way for Marvel to showcase more of their characters. Especially the street level characters. We wouldn't have to wait on the movies for everything. Have the movies deal with the huge Avenger level threats while the tv show deals with the smaller characters and threats in the Marvel U.

Extremely smart move. I'm hoping it's true.
Lego - 8/28/2012, 6:52 PM
sounds cool. Hope they don't put Black Panther in there and rob him of the big screen.
JULEZ13 - 8/28/2012, 6:52 PM
I really thought they were gonna make a Hulk TV Show... This news is very unexpected. Wondering what this show is gonna be about... Will there be cameos of other heroes or will it just be about SHIELD agents? I'll check it out of course.
BIGBMH - 8/28/2012, 6:52 PM
Very exciting!
ATrueHero1987 - 8/28/2012, 6:53 PM
Oh yes! Jeph Leob writing episodes, Oh no!
AutobotCommander84 - 8/28/2012, 6:54 PM
Meh. I don't really care about S.H.I.E.L.D. unless they follow on from Item 47, which I thought was the second best of the three behind A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor's Hammer.
super01 - 8/28/2012, 6:55 PM
Cool. Looking forward to it.
DylansMyDog - 8/28/2012, 6:55 PM
with AIM appearing in IM3 I bet they will be at least one of the villains in the show. Bring on MODOK!
Geeksiah - 8/28/2012, 6:58 PM
Item 47 was nothing but a backdoor Pilot..
BlazinTexan - 8/28/2012, 6:58 PM
your a asshat^
Wingding - 8/28/2012, 6:59 PM
Awesome! Maybe they'll have those two people from Item 47 in it.
SageMode - 8/28/2012, 7:00 PM
Awesome news
Wingding - 8/28/2012, 7:00 PM

JerBear - 8/28/2012, 7:02 PM

Cobie Smulders, Max Hernandez, Titus Welliver, Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford
spidey1994 - 8/28/2012, 7:02 PM
Defenitley will be watchinf this!
csdot - 8/28/2012, 7:03 PM
i dont see how this could be bad, im sure it will be littered with Marvel cameos. Whedon knows how to please the fanboys.
CCR - 8/28/2012, 7:05 PM
AWESOME.
continuezero - 8/28/2012, 7:05 PM
Hopefully it's not more of that Item 147 BS cuz that was garbage.
SCURVYDOG619 - 8/28/2012, 7:05 PM
Could we see Dum-Dum Dugan in this SHIELD series?Or maybe Clay Quartermain and RICK JONES???

Wow....Just had a thought...What if this is based on Hickman's SHIELD book?????
Ranger14 - 8/28/2012, 7:07 PM
Nosferatu@ lol...yes because the average person isn't interested in watching Marvel shows. Oh wait a minute...the Avengers, featuring S.H.I.E.LD., brought in how many average viewers to the theater? Watching a tv series tied to the MCU and Avengers shouldn't have any challenge with viewership.
RAWRG - 8/28/2012, 7:07 PM
HOLY SHIT YES!
thewonderer - 8/28/2012, 7:08 PM
Whats the point?

I mean, if they're actually doing this, please use the opportunity to put in some c lister marvel characters.

Otherwise, this sounds extremely boring.

Why is everyone excited?

Don't you realize the whole marvel superhero costume (pun intended) is just A FRONT to license yet another cop type show serial.

Its pretty much assured this will have nothing to do with actual superheroes
nowtheresaBATman - 8/28/2012, 7:09 PM
Would much rather see a Hulk or Punisher show.

This sounds boring but it'll probably be better than Arrow atleast.
thewonderer - 8/28/2012, 7:09 PM
@Ranger

People watched Avengers for the heroes dude, no one cares about Shield.

If anything, people will watch the pilot and drop it upon realizing that
sweeetbass - 8/28/2012, 7:10 PM
I can see fury being in the pilot, cameos in major archs, and season finales. Colbie will be on board once himym ends... Maybe they'll have a flashback solo caulson episode. I could see one of the seasons being the registration act. Maybe this is where pym can be introduced if it comes out before the ant man movie... This could have a dollhouse/firefly/mission impossible/alias vibe. Maybe it will feel like heroes but with some balls and better budget. I have high hopes for this.
