News broke only hours ago that ABC are green-lighting a live-action TV series based on Marvel's peacekeeping organization, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the first details have been revealed via the pilot's co-writer & prospective director Joss Whedon. Moderating the Writers Guild Theater today, Variety quotes the filmmaker saying:

“The storyline for the proposed series will be largely "autonomous" from the "Avengers" sequel feature. The series will revolve around the activities of the SHIELD org governing body for the superheroes featured in "Avengers.”

As reported earlier, Whedon will direct the pilot, if his schedule allows it. And he's being credited as the co-writer alongside his brother, Jed Whedon & his wife Maurissa Tancharoen. And the Dollhouse trio are also serving as executive producers with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb. What do you think?

Can't wait to see how this goes
Durf - 8/28/2012, 10:57 PM
I'm really excited to see how this goes and what we will get
gammaface248 - 8/28/2012, 10:59 PM
it makes sense that its a shield based tv show. I think that it will be some sort of segway/intro to heroes for hire earzmundo. Now whatever is going on with the Hulk tv show, i seriously doubt it will star mark ruffalo. Probably have some sort of connection between the two shows. Great News!!!!!!
jimpinto24 - 8/28/2012, 11:02 PM
I can't wait for S.H.I.E.L.D!
LuckyKyd - 8/28/2012, 11:04 PM
This sounds almost too good to be true. I'm incredibly psyched... Bring it on!!!
MarkV - 8/28/2012, 11:04 PM
Hate to be a concern troll, but I can't see how this will work. Maybe I'm wrong?
dracula - 8/28/2012, 11:04 PM
i bet its going to be great and then canseled after one season because of the cost to make it just like fire fly and it should focus on the two from the marvel one shot item 42
gammaface248 - 8/28/2012, 11:06 PM
nahh, dont be so negative. If this was greenlit five years ago...it wouldnt have made it a full season. There is so much money in marvel, they'll do whatever they want to for a while..
santoanderson - 8/28/2012, 11:06 PM
I wonder if this will end up being like the X-Files or Fringe, but with superheros.
RAWRG - 8/28/2012, 11:07 PM
Can't wait for this! Hope to see some new agents like Quartermain and more of Agent Sitwell
Malcopunch - 8/28/2012, 11:10 PM
There are two things we need in this show:

1.Ant-man
2.Agent Coulson as Vision

Also the Shield show could involve..them recruiting Multiple Superheroes from around the world..like Moon Knight,Daredevil and maybe even Namor
TheSoulEater - 8/28/2012, 11:10 PM
OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tazmaniak - 8/28/2012, 11:12 PM
@dracula, it's doubtful those 2 will play a part in the series. Jesse Bradford is the star of an NBC sitcom debuting this fall and Lizzy Caplan is the star of a Showtime drama debuting next year.
dwaynejohnsonsfromundahcheesepanini - 8/28/2012, 11:13 PM
OH gravy! I mean goodie! He's directing a big budget sequel and doing this show. He better leave Avengers 3 to someone else. Not a concern troll or hater, but does the term "burnout" mean anything?

Maybe that's the deal with that Fiege;

"I develop the show & stay on for the sequel.., that's it."

Otherwise I see some serious thinning of quality. Joss is only a man.., with one heck of a ssssssspeech impediment.

SkateandDestroy88 - 8/28/2012, 11:23 PM
Hmm, I still can't believe how awesome the avengers was.
Bring it.
Malcopunch - 8/28/2012, 11:24 PM
Personally..they should go with the Ultimate Unvierce version of SHEILF because it is alot less members..The Sheild Show could have:

General Nick Fury
Carol Danvers
Dum Dum Dugan (He could not of aged at all)
Sharon Carter (Grandaughter of Peggy Charcter)
Corporal Thaddeus Aloysius Cadwallander "Dum Dum" Dugan[
Agent Sharon Carter
James "Jimmy" Woo
Clay Quartermain[
Dr. Philip Lawson (Mahr Vehl)
Betty Ross
Daimon Hellstrom
Agent Wendell Vaughn.
The New Sentinels
Elijah Stern (Tinkerer)
Sam Wilson (Falcon)
Xi'an Coy Manh
Dr. Jennifer Walters
Blackie Drago (Vulture)
Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat)
Henry Pym (Giant-Man)
Natasha Romanova (Black Widow)

Good news, I love an expansive universe that cover over various meduims.
RobertGarlen - 8/28/2012, 11:42 PM
Is it cancelled yet? Hope not.
ACira - 8/28/2012, 11:43 PM
SHIELD makes a lot of sense as a TV show. Plus by then, How I Met Your Mother is likely to have ended, meaning Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill has the potential to be a main cast member in the series, likely as a stand in for Nick Fury (can't imagine Samuel L Jackson doing TV).
ACira - 8/28/2012, 11:44 PM
Plus this way, all the good superheroes are saved for the movies!
musashi - 8/28/2012, 11:46 PM
Bring it on!

Mission 1: Resurrect Coulson! Lol
SunSp0t - 8/28/2012, 11:50 PM
Just gimme some Cobie and its all good baby!
novaprime - 8/28/2012, 11:52 PM
Will we get to seee hawkeye WITH A MASK MABY SOME HANK AND JANET PYM CAMEOS.!! WWWWOOOOOO CANT WAIT!!!!!.
novaprime - 8/28/2012, 11:54 PM
@pux already hating mr dc fan. I BET UR EXCITED FOR THAT ARROW TV SHOW, B CUZ DC DOESNT HAVE ANYTHING EXCITING COMING OUT IN THEATERS MARVELS GONNA HAVE THERE HOLE UNIVERSE ON THE BIG SCREEEN
GizmoEl - 8/28/2012, 11:55 PM
I wouldn't mind a SHIELD tv show with Agent Maria Hill as the lead. Cobie would be great in the role and it would expand her role while bridging a connection to the movies.
dwaynejohnsonsfromundahcheesepanini - 8/28/2012, 11:55 PM
I think the tv actress hired to play Maria Hill has been immersed(at this point)with enough Marvel minutia that after the HIMYM contract ends, we'll soon see a better version of Maria Hill than we got last May. She is good.., was Joss attracted to her on set? That's the best he could get out of her? The Broken Lizard guys got an equal performance. In all seriousness this might actually be a great vehicle for Smulders and would work on the Whedon screen; stop, you all know he's better with episodic tales.
TheMightyTroy - 8/28/2012, 11:56 PM
keen to see how this turns out!
KilledHal9000 - 8/29/2012, 12:00 AM
Nick Fury will die, then possibly come back later. Sam Jackson will die in Avengers 2 or another Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie.

ShadowOfTheWeb - 8/29/2012, 12:12 AM
SO MUCH AWESOME
TimL - 8/29/2012, 12:13 AM
Cobie probably wont be in it due to HIMYM season 8.
PersonaPostOvo - 8/29/2012, 12:28 AM
I'm not very excited at all.
CoolantTech - 8/29/2012, 12:31 AM
Boobies to commemorate

dwaynejohnsonsfromundahcheesepanini - 8/29/2012, 12:38 AM
@coolant tek

the old man looking up; stage left. :D
Jollem - 8/29/2012, 12:45 AM
i guess i didn't wish hard enough for a cloak and dagger show

whedon would write a good show for these two
UrbanKnight - 8/29/2012, 12:49 AM
Autonomous? So no camoes then? Either way looks to be good. Whedon surely does loooves tv! Dont he?
luckylu - 8/29/2012, 1:01 AM
not that excited. i will most likely be skipping this it sounds really damn boring
CoolantTech - 8/29/2012, 1:07 AM
@DwayneJohnson Yeah, but strangely enough no one else seems to be looking
marvelstudios - 8/29/2012, 1:08 AM
For the people who are saying this is "boring". Firstly, did you really expect a high budget, cgi-heavy tv series. Secondly, you haven't even watched a teaser so how would you know. And thirdly, we don't even know what the main plot is nor do we know who will be cast and as who.

As far as i'm concerned, Marvel hasn't done wrong so far, why would this tv series be any different.
Jollem - 8/29/2012, 1:28 AM
i am not in the "boring" camp with this. mr. whedon has skills, so i believe the show will probably be quality

that being said, i think anyone that has been regularly checking out this site from time to time knows that nothing here ever gets poo thrown at it preemptively. #sarcasm :)

tho, some people might genuinely not be interested in a shield show
Orphix - 8/29/2012, 2:01 AM
Autonomous   [aw-ton-uh-muhs]

adjective
1. Government .
a. self-governing; independent; subject to its own laws only.
b. pertaining to an autonomy.
2. having autonomy; not subject to control from outside; independent: a subsidiary that functioned as an autonomous unit.
3. Biology .
a. existing and functioning as an independent organism.
b. spontaneous.

Hmmm - I guess I shall only expect exciting cameos in the pilot then.
silverdog - 8/29/2012, 2:50 AM

best news of the day. now have some regular whedon actors in there, and ask samuel jackson (not a tv actor but he seems to love the fury character, so he might say yes) and cobbie smulders (girl must want to do something different after how I met your mother season 25) to be in the pilot.

a good place to introduce winter soldier and falcon.
gleetana - 8/29/2012, 3:07 AM
wow!!good to hear that. hope it has clark gregg in some flashback episodes, and some of whedons regulars...I would love to see sarah michelle gellar as carol danvers or eliza dushku as jessica drew.
dancingmonkey08 - 8/29/2012, 3:12 AM
omg yes!!!! I was hoping for this, its the only logical choice, this will be awesome. we will follow different SHIELD agents as they fight threats, I would love that tv show! Plus they can begin to introduce characters who can be used in later MCU movies and also use characters who might not have been big enough for a movie. OMG this will be fantastic! I hope it starts Autumn 2013, then we can get two seasons before the Avengers 2 comes out and they can tie the Season 2 finale into the Avengers 2

But saying all this, they will really have to work on a way of keeping a balance between the movies and tv show. Its a good idea to have the tv show set in the movie universe, but dont make the tv show thinking everybody has seen the movies (because it could be a good way to get new fans interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) or dont throw characters into the movies, thinking everybody already knows their backstory from the tv show

oh and I support Maria Hill being the main star of the show. They can set it on the SHIELD helicarrier, (re-use the shots of it flying from the Avengers), have Maria Hill sorta be the "M" of the show, she sends out agents to combat threats that are too small for superheroes but are still a major threat. Plus she can go out on missions sometimes too. But I would love to see an appearance now and again from Samuel L Jackson, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner now and again. Maybe they could have the superheroes appear once a season for some major threat during the season and then Sam Jackson as Nick Fury in the premiere and finale. But the rest of the time Maria Hill handles his duties. And I hope How I Met Your Mother finishes up with the upcoming season because the show has run its course, so that would be perfect to free up Cobie to make this SHIELD tv series!

Plus the idea of this show is genius as they dont even have to build a new set, they have all the sets from the Avengers already, talk about using your money right!

@DAFIRG

I was actually thinking about this too, is this the way they can get the characters that they dont have the rights to into the MCU as they own the tv rights to all of their characters. Imagine an episode with the proper X-Men or even Andrew Garfield guest starring as Spider-Man for an episode, that would be awesome. I hope this comes true!
Nubase - 8/29/2012, 3:15 AM
it will fail, it will not last no more then 2 seasons
Smokey - 8/29/2012, 3:49 AM
Clark Gregg will be kicking himself... I actually hope they bring Coulson back just for the show... I mean he's the glue...
Matfin93 - 8/29/2012, 3:58 AM
Dark Knight Rises
marvel72 - 8/29/2012, 3:59 AM
would be cool if they introduce a new hero or villain each week.
CherryBomb - 8/29/2012, 4:15 AM
I don't like this idea at all.

I think they should just do one property at a time.
So like ... SHIELD are in the Avengers and the movies .. so therefore no need to be a TV show. Especially not a TV show that isn't in continuity.

And it seems like it'll be a very big budget, so if the ratings aren't amazing, then it'll get cancelled straight away. I don't think SHIELD is all that interesting to spawn a tv show.

Just my opinion, I'll be very happy to surprised, but I really think they should've gone down a different, fresh route.
