Joss Whedon Confident In James Gunn's ‘Twisted Take’ On GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Revealing the current stage of James Gunn's direction, The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon says the Super director has a “twisted take” on Guardians of the Galaxy, & Rocket Raccoon!

The untitled sequel to The Avengers is the only cinematic addition to Marvel's shared universe that writer-director Joss Whedon is contracted to helm. However, his three-year deal with the studio allows his “creative” input into the other “Phase 2” films that will ultimately lead up to Earth Mightiest Heroes' big reassembly.

And with Marvel's risky interstellar superhero assembly, Guardians of the Galaxy on that “Phase 2” slate, and rumored to lead directly into The Avengers sequel, surely Whedon will be in the know. And that's especially so considering the studio tapped his good friend, James Gunn, to direct the 2014 flick last month. And while promoting his praised take on the classic William Shakespeare comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, the critically acclaimed filmmaker shared with MTV News what he thinks about Gunn's direction so far.

“James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, 'Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I'm not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].' And then they said, 'Well, we're thinking about using James Gunn.' And I said, 'Oh, then no, you're fine.' He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote 'The Specials.' People don't understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed] 'Super.' Gunn has barely started, but already has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It's going to be hard for the humans to keep up," said Whedon. "I know he's going to come from left field and I'm going to go, 'What?' And then, 'Of course, why didn't I think of that?' And then I'm going to beat him!”

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

Directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

IronDean2099 - 9/10/2012, 7:50 AM
I'm still not sure it's a good idea to have GOTG show up in A2. I think they're getting ahead of themselves. Everyone has seen the Avengers, but unless they see Guardians (which could still flop) they won't know what's going on in the Avengers sequel.
DrHorrible - 9/10/2012, 7:52 AM
It sounds very interesting to me. I don't know much about the Guardians of the Galaxy, but this movie has DEFINITELY peaked my interest.
TragicBronson - 9/10/2012, 7:53 AM
Hopefully everything turns out as planned for Marvel. Otherwise this ragtag group of space heroes is gonna overwhelm the world...
ksommer - 9/10/2012, 7:55 AM
I loved the "Then I'm going to beat him" line. Whedon is awesome.
GoILL - 9/10/2012, 7:56 AM

Big fan of guardians of the galaxy and I feel so lucky to be getting a movie lol I think rocket raccoon might have the yoda effect on people were he looks funny but people grow to love him and will feel emotion when he gets hit or hurt .

AHH JOSS, MARVEL KNEW YOU WERE THE MAN AND NOW THE WORLD KNOWS WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH A BIG BUDGET SUPERHERO MOVIE. YOUR GOLD NOW.
LoudLon - 9/10/2012, 8:12 AM
I'm not sold with Gunn directing. His films so far have been kind of forgettable; Super, Slither, the original script for Dawn of the Dead '04 (I've read it -- pretty clunky) and of course his work for Troma. So, yeah, I'm a touch worried about this one.
MarkV - 9/10/2012, 8:16 AM
Call me crazy, I think this won't get made.
blvdnoise - 9/10/2012, 8:17 AM
Liam Neeson for Racoon ;)
AC1 - 9/10/2012, 8:18 AM
I have a feeling that this will be a film that comic book and sci-fi fans adore, but I'm not sure how the rest of the cinema-going audience will respond to it.
coolguy - 9/10/2012, 8:21 AM
If this can be pulled off I will have new faith in a gl movie.
CPBuff22 - 9/10/2012, 8:22 AM
I am currently in the middle of rereading everything from Annihilation through War of Kings and let me tell ya, I LOVE Guardians of the Galaxy. I really hope Adam Warlock makes a cameo at very least and we can see him in the third phase. I have nothing but faith in Joss & Marvel at this point. They would have to really do a horrible job to loose that faith.

Also I LOVE James Gunn working on this film. Slither was so strange and left you feeling really uncomfortable, Super was fantastic (Ellen Page knocked it out of the park and is one of my favorite superhero movie characters of all time), & the Specials & Scooby-Doo both did a good job in balancing the cast.

I foresee great things in Marvels future.

cool cool

I think James Gunn is a solid choice for such an oddball property. Between his work with Troma, the great homage to alien invasion/zombie movies that was Slither, and the disturbing, yet fully engaging Super, I feel like Gunn will give this movie all of the quirkiness it needs. Not to mention he has Whedon's endorsement, and we all know Whedon can do no wrong in the eyes of Marvel fans right now.

@Nomis- No, but it's what Marvel Studios is giving us, so I say we ride the wave and see where it takes us. But I'm with you. I would've definitely rather have seen Luke Cage or Doctor Strange before GOTG. As steeped as I am in Marvel lore, I don't know jack shit about the Guardians, so I guess I look at it as an opportunity to learn more about them, provided it doesn't stray too far from the comics.
DalyBear - 9/10/2012, 8:29 AM
Rainn Wilson for rocket raccoon, just saying
MatchesMalone - 9/10/2012, 8:31 AM

theboywonder - 9/10/2012, 8:37 AM
Yeah I wish I knew more about this team. i'll have to do some research
Spidey91 - 9/10/2012, 8:41 AM
The Avengers proved that the whole "I'm not sure general audiences will get it" and "only fanboys will see this" argument is complete bullsh*t

"from the studio that brought you The Avengers" + good trailer + hype + some star power = BAM! another hit for MARVEL Studios
MatchesMalone - 9/10/2012, 8:45 AM
@tea- Cool. Now we can get back to the important stuff like making fun of her dick and your mangina! :)
YoungThanos - 9/10/2012, 8:48 AM
Here's to Phase 2 surpassing Phase 1.
OtakuPapi - 9/10/2012, 8:55 AM
Watched Super this morning. Loved Ellen Page's character in it.Overall a entertaining movie and very twisted, but wicked fun.Needed a bigger budget. But i believe in this guy based on that!
NeoBaggins - 9/10/2012, 9:13 AM
"Twisted take"?

Gooood, goooood....

RexDartEskimoSpy - 9/10/2012, 9:13 AM

RexDartEskimoSpy - 9/10/2012, 9:24 AM
It was confirmed when Joss told Disney "Hey fools, James Gunn should do Guardians Of The Galaxy."
marvel72 - 9/10/2012, 9:35 AM

WinterSoldier24 - 9/10/2012, 9:48 AM
Good to see you again, tea. These boards were so lonely without you... ;P

I'm loving the sound of this flick. I think it's gonna be a home run, for sure. RR is gonna steal the show like The Hulk did. You'll see! YOU'LL ALL SEE!!

;P
breakUbatman - 9/10/2012, 9:53 AM
@Spidey91

"The Avengers proved that the whole "I'm not sure general audiences will get it" and "only fanboys will see this" argument is complete bullsh*t"

Tell that to Scott Pilgrim and Watchmen...

Avengers is a lot to live up to and its a double edged sword. Iron Man set the standard for Phase 1 but the only film to reach/exceed that benchmark is The Avengers.

Similarly I'm yet to find anyone (outside this site) who didn't like TDKR but all agree TDK is better.

I just hope that we don't have to wait another 4 years for the CBM bar to be raised.
Kayo - 9/10/2012, 9:53 AM
yesssssssssss.................can't wait for the casting choice
TheAbomination - 9/10/2012, 9:54 AM
Getting more pumped for this film with each article!! Come on August '14!!!
Nostalgic14 - 9/10/2012, 10:06 AM
I'm excited for it. But idk about GotG being in the Avengers sequel. I think there is other things they could do, unless they need their help in the intergalactic fight against the Skrulls! Maybe.
LAXtremest - 9/10/2012, 10:06 AM
I am praying we get Warlock in this. That would be so epic.
