Gwyneth Paltrow Hesitant About Reprising ‘Pepper Potts’ In THE AVENGERS Sequel

Attending the Toronto Film Festival premiere of Thanks For Sharing, her sex addition flick starring her Avengers co-star Mark Ruffalo, actress Gwyneth Paltrow vaguely discussed her reprisal as ‘Pepper Potts’ in Iron Man 3. Seemingly unsure if she'll be interested in reprising the role after completing the Shane Black-directed third installment, namely in Marvel's The Avengers Joss Whedon-helmed sequel, she tells E! News:

“I just came off of Iron Man 3, which is as special effects-y and action-y as it gets, so to do something like [Thanks For Sharing] where it's really small, funny and exciting, is really great. I don't know [about returning for The Avengers seqeuel], I'm getting old for this shit, you know what I mean?”

Described as a “technological crisis thriller,” set in the world of international war, arms & terror, Marvel Studios' “Iron Man 3” stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Dale Dickey, Ashley Hamilton, James Badge Dale, with Sir Ben Kingsley and Jon Favreau. Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) takes over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two “Iron Man” films. Principal photography will occur primarily in North Carolina and China. And “Iron Man 3” is set for release in May 3, 2013.

RDJ is almost fifty. Don't say things like that Pepper!
satanpunk - 9/10/2012, 11:31 AM
replace her, she wont be missed
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 9/10/2012, 11:45 AM
I don't know why she is saying something like this because she had no action sequences in The Avengers.I'm sure she will have some in IM3.And Gwyneth, you're not old yet babe.
ElChavo - 9/10/2012, 12:17 PM
no to rescue
LMB10 - 9/10/2012, 12:25 PM
It's not like she'd need a huge role... 5 mins at the most is all that would be neccisary
Luminus - 9/10/2012, 12:30 PM
These actors kill me. They get hired for a move that does billions and then start complaining about being "typcast" or "getting too old." These people need to start eating Ramen noodles for dinner, so that they can remember what it's like to suffer.
nuclearpriest - 9/10/2012, 3:19 PM
Sounds like someone wants to hear a cash register going ch-ching.
Jollem - 9/10/2012, 3:38 PM
"I just came off of Iron Man 3, which is as [special] effects-y and action-y as it gets"

don't forget one-liner-y. people love that. s'what won him over and brought him to the general publics eye

i thought it was quick how they moved will the pepper/anthony sappy love deal. so if she's dunzo, then i guess tony can be more of a playboy. dudes like that stuff, right?
ACira - 9/10/2012, 3:46 PM
I don't see why she's hesitant about Avengers 2, it's not like she had a big role in the first one, she had like 3 scenes, and I'd bet if she appeared in the sequel she'd have less.

Maybe her departure could lead to Demon In A Bottle? I mean they've already sort-of tackled Tony quitting drinking in Iron Man 2 after the drunk party armour scene, but what better reason for him to relapse and really lose it all to drink than the first woman he's ever loved leaving (however they decide to do that; her leaving him, or being killed off).
Jollem - 9/10/2012, 4:03 PM
@ACira - they dropped the ball with Demon in a Bottle in iron man 2. johnny favs pretty much says so in the commentary. that ackward drunk scene where iron man pees in his pants and whatnot...that's what we got. not surprising. the movies gotta be more family-friendly. probably for money reasons
RunDTC - 9/10/2012, 4:33 PM
@BluePallando: no, no, no...

Peggy>Black Widow>Jane Foster>Darcy>Maria Hill>Christine Everhart>Betty Ross>Pepper
rocky - 9/10/2012, 4:35 PM
I don't see why Demon in a Bottle would be out, part 2 like part 1 showed Tony easily crossing that line so they could work as omens of things to come.

As far as Paltrow, I'd opt for them writing her off than replacing her and then doing like ACira said above.
bababoozer - 9/10/2012, 4:39 PM
I felt they made her a lil frumpy in Avengers, but she still pretty hot. Don't know if she'll make IM4, though.
Tainted87 - 9/10/2012, 4:41 PM
Gwyneth, you are my favorite MCU love interest, you are only second to Jennifer Connelly's Betty in my eyes, and she's two years older.

Your barefoot stroll through Stark Tower in short shorts left a lasting impression on men and women alike.

We NEED you, don't go....
UrbanKnight - 9/10/2012, 4:55 PM
If you don't get into that ginger wig, high heels and skirt!...
Don't play hard to get girl, wit yo fine ass milf self.
defenderofthefaith - 9/10/2012, 5:02 PM
I don't think it will matter. I am thinking Jane Foster will be the main female this time around(besides Black Widow of course). I have a feeling they are going to need her science in the Avengers 2. I think the only reason she was not in the first one was because she was pregnant when they shot it.
ComfortablyNumb - 9/10/2012, 5:32 PM
She needs to get the [frick] over it.
SuperSpiderMan5778 - 9/10/2012, 5:44 PM
who does she think she is? Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon?
silverdog - 9/10/2012, 5:51 PM
well, if she wants to go... not the end of the world. thank you miss paltrow, Christina Hendricks as pepper pots for the 4 minutes of screen time she is going to have in the avengers 2.
subzero1077 - 9/10/2012, 5:55 PM
She doesn't look that old to me.
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 9/10/2012, 6:00 PM
Her role in the Avengers film was so physically demanding it's easy to see why she is having reservations...by easy to see I mean WTF?!?!? Seriously?!?! Show up, put on another pair of jean shorts, prance around for a few days, collect your pay check.
TheAbomination - 9/10/2012, 6:10 PM
Replace her with another actress or introduce some of Tony stark's other love interests. Either way, as long as RDJ signs on for a couple more Marvel flicks, I'm fine.
OrganizedChaos - 9/10/2012, 6:15 PM
she says "I'm getting old for this shit"

She really meant "I'm getting annoyed from this shit"
ieatlegos - 9/10/2012, 6:50 PM
She's saying she's going to die in Iron Man 3, which would be pretty good.
AEStark - 9/10/2012, 6:53 PM
I'm fine with it. Larocca has been drawing Nicole Kidman as pepper for years.
CeltiC527 - 9/10/2012, 7:23 PM
I find it funny how Marvel fans love the actors and actresses that play in the Marvel films, until they start to talk bad about the films or talk about not returning. People always talked so highly of Paltrow as pepper and now that she might not come back people don't care and talk crap about her? And the same goes with Norton, Howard, Rourke, Dallas, and even the directors like Favreau and Branah.
mgeoff88 - 9/10/2012, 7:23 PM
Wow, I'm really surprised about this. It looked like she had fun during the filming of The Avengers.

I really like her as Pepper Potts. She's great in the role. I don't want her to be recasted in The Avengers 2.

@Tainted87 That was beautiful.
EastcoastAvenger - 9/10/2012, 7:33 PM
What is the "Shit" she is referring to anyway? She couldn't possibly mean playing make believe in which she is paid many millions of dollars for is shit?

These actors and actresses live a life most of us can't imagine. Meanwhile, most of America is waking up every day to go to a job that allows them to barely get by with the wages they earn.
DrDoom - 9/10/2012, 7:36 PM
@Tainted87

Jennifer Connelly isn't part of the MCU.

Also . . . . Gwyneth . . . .

Don't be stupid. It's money, and you're not old enough for "this shit". Get over yourself. You live as few people dare to dream.
FOOM - 9/10/2012, 7:36 PM
'I'm getting old for this shit, you know what I mean?'
How positively Shakespearean.
And here I was thinking she was talking about Chris Martin.
Goodbye Gwyneth.
Temple - 9/10/2012, 7:49 PM
@Luminus Truth, well said.
StormLoganSummers - 9/10/2012, 7:58 PM
Sometimes I think I'm getting too a little too old for this shit too.
Moakynubs - 9/10/2012, 8:02 PM
She has the least special effects-y and action-y shots in every movie.
Bandido - 9/10/2012, 8:06 PM
lol @StormLogan comment
Lowell58 - 9/10/2012, 9:22 PM
It must be rough, all that looking upset and stuff. Not to mention the missing of phone calls on a jet. I'm surprised she made it out of Avengers.
Jollem - 9/10/2012, 10:46 PM
@CeltiC527 - wishy-washy, fair-weathered, and defensive are no strangers in these neck of the 'nets :)

i imagine if rdjr. one day said he was done with marvel and it was just something to do for money and didn't care for it there would be people saying: "whatever, he wasn't an entertaining tony stark anyway. etc..."
kemuael - 9/11/2012, 12:40 AM
well if she wants out then..bye! she wont be missed, well not by me :-)
113 - 9/11/2012, 2:07 AM
I actually really like her Pepper Potts. And I'd still hit it!
blkyank - 9/11/2012, 2:52 AM
What the f.ck is so offensive about an actor giving her honest opinion?

When she says she is getting too old for this shit she is talking about continuing a role that is ment to provide a foil for RDJ and some eye candy.

She likely believes that its not in the character"s future to be fleshed out beyond screaming "Tony" and would rather bow out on her terms then be released because she is "Too old" down the road.

Shit, while CBM fanboys bash Paltrow for stating the obvious, others are on another thread saying Amy Adams is too [frick]ing old to play Lois Lane.

Fanboys, can't live with em,can't shoot em.
lokibane2012 - 9/11/2012, 3:44 AM
@Luminus

What wrong with ramen noodle for dinner? I love ramen noodles.
lokibane2012 - 9/11/2012, 3:50 AM
Unlike what most others here are saying, I do believe she is an important part of the IM films.

RDJ plays a likeable asshole, that's great and props to him for pulling it off. But like Hugh Laurie from House, he ran the risk of getting just plain bitter and douchey over the long run, if it wasn't for his relationship with Pepper Potts. It helps give the character a heart, and show that while he's a dick, he's still a good man.

Paltrow's acting, and her chemistry with RDJ really helps and would be hard to replicate with a new, younger actress. They both just seem like they've known each other and lived together a long time. And for those who take all that for granted, think back to the Ryan Reynolds-Blake Lively chemistry from GL...

Yeah. Losing her would be a bit of a blow to say the least.
batfan175 - 9/11/2012, 6:55 AM
i have to agree with her. Most of these huge superhero blockbusters are artistically empty (except for nolan's batman films) so i'm glad she wants to do more indeendent cinema.
plasticman - 9/11/2012, 7:37 AM
She knew coming into this role that it was a side character. That the chance of it blossoming into something bigger was not realistically going to happen. These are not movies about Pepper Potts and the Avengers (or Iron Man). I agree with BluePallando, this is contract talk for I am going to hold out for more money since this franchise is full of green and I am full of greed.

"Too old for this" is not a reference to age of the character at all. Leaving this role she is looking to do another artsy-fartsy flick about Dora Maar who met Picasso at the age of 29. Pepper is 30+ in the movies which is how old Gwyneth really is.

Am I splitting hairs? Yes, but only to prove a point that it is not a reference to the age of the character or the material but solely a comment about money. I say replace her if she does not want to cooperate. Similar actions have been taken with this franchise before with no big problem. Same thing happened with Katie Holmes in the Batman trilogy (different reasons though) but it did not take away from the story.
EarOne - 9/11/2012, 8:27 AM
hey, i don't see any malicious intent in her comment. and it's understandable she would say that. sides..i don't think her character/presence is needed in Avengers 2 or the ones afterwards..unless there's an emphasis on the tony stark character..something personal about him.

otherwise, it's time for other 'supporting' characters, like Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, Betty Ross (whoever it is playing her)..or General Ross (William Hurt or somebody else), or Odin, or even Frigga to cameo in the next Avengers movies.
Ha1frican - 9/11/2012, 9:23 AM
Which means she basically bored and wants to move on. Doubt she renews her contract which is probably up with IM 3 considering Downeys is
Gerrit - 9/11/2012, 10:54 AM
She's not getting old. That's one of the reasons why RDJ rocks, he is very comitted to the character and said he will keep on playing Iron Man as long as people enjoy his performance.
Godzillafart - 9/11/2012, 12:44 PM
It would be sad to not have her around. The comedic yet touching chemistry between Tony and Pepper is some of the best we have seen in Hollywood in a long time, let alone in a CBM. It's a real throwback to the old school Hollywood romantic banter ala Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. Good stuff and one of the best parts of the Marvel films so far.
gleetana - 9/11/2012, 1:25 PM
well, is her opinion... maybe she had more to do in iron man 3 and is tired after filming. but start complaining about avengers 2, when phase 2 is just starting and there is not even an script yet, is an exaggeration. her role could end being smaller than in the avengers.. personally, I think pepper cameo in the first movie was enough. give a chance to betty ross, sharon carter or jane foster for the sequel.
LeoAtrox - 9/11/2012, 1:46 PM
You don't need to replace her ... Just write around her. Pepper's role has expanded in the comics partly as a result of the movie character's prominance. I wouldn't say she is an inconsequential comic character, but she's not particularly important either. They've setup Stark as a major plot device for the first two films; but it doesn't play a major role in all the Iron Man stories and doesn't NEED to have just a major role in future Iron Man films either. So leave her to run Stark Industries in the movies, and just focus on Tony Stark and Iron Man apart from Stark Industries business. Tony has enough personal issues to make ten more movies with nary a mention of Stark Industries. Saving the world and developing Iron Man upgrades takes time, so he really cannot be running his company anyway (that's why Pepper is in charge).
chronoxiong - 9/11/2012, 4:04 PM
They think that they are too old to reprise their roles in sequels among sequels. Then when their career starts falling apart, what do they do? They reprise the role that was very popular with fans. Just ask the Fast & the Furious cast members.
