Making more promotional rounds for Marvel's The Avengers Blu-ray and DVD release, the studios' co-president, Louis D'Esposito has delved more into future expansions of the Marvel cinematic universe. Teasing The Avengers sequel's expanded roster, D'Esposito also dots on the film that's expected to lead directly into that Joss Whedon-directed “2015 cinematic event,” Guardians of the Galaxy. He also comments on their prospective villain.

When Cine Premiere asked the Marvel co-chairman what character he would have liked to see in the original box office behemoth, D'Esposito said, “we discussed it at the time and I think in The Avengers 2 will see some new characters. We're currently working on Phase 2 and we have Iron Man 3 , Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier , so we returned to those franchises to enlarge them, but I think in The Avengers 2 will see one or two new characters.”

Regarding The Avengers' new threat, the original film's mid-credits surprise may have already revealed him to be the Mad Titan Thanos. However, after that was brought, D'Esposito could only say, “I think Thanos' presence keeps the audience interested. At the end of Iron Man, many did not know who was Nick Fury and many wondered who the patch. serves to generate interest and from there you can go ahead and tell their stories.”

Even if Thanos doesn't appear in The Avengers sequel, Marvel president Kevin Feige has hinted that the plum villain will be the centerpiece of the James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy movie. When asked about the 2014 interstellar superhero team-up, D'Esposito says, “In the development process we have many characters and stories are always planning and a concept that we thought we could use and would be unsatisfactory. Decided to do it. Not think there's a secret formula, as you know we have a Black Panther, Iron Fist, Luke Cage & more that we are developing and things & all you want to be made, but few [films] are made before others.”

As for the gun-toting Rocket Raccoon, D'Esposito said he “has the potential to give a good show.”

Marvel Studios already describes their highly-anticipated sequel to the No. 3 highest grossing film of all time, “Marvel's The Avengers,” as another “big cinematic event.” And expected to feature the reassembly of iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow & Nick Fury taking on a new unexpected enemy, new additions to the superhero team up of a lifetime are possible.

Expecting reprisals from Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” sequel is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. And set for release May 1, 2015, the film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to the sequel, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014.

Ugh, so cryptic.
AlcoholicA - 9/18/2012, 8:36 AM
So they ARE working on Panther?

I would like to see the Heroes for Hire just beat the shít out of people for an hour and a half.
80sFace - 9/18/2012, 8:41 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if Black Widow or Hawkeye (or both) aren't in Avengers 2. And they go with one or two other heroes, like Ant-Man, Captain/Ms. Marvel.
herodian - 9/18/2012, 8:44 AM
I read somewhere that Tommy Chong was going to voice Thanos in future films.
I hear Danny McBride is voicing Thanos.
Linta - 9/18/2012, 8:52 AM

MARVELPSYCHO79 - 9/18/2012, 9:01 AM
The Pyms have to join the Avengers for Part 2 since they should have been in the first one.Plus,Marvel should let the Avengers and more heroes face Thanos in Avengers 3.
rockerdude22 - 9/18/2012, 9:05 AM
There's still a possibility that Ant-Man will be a part of Phase 2. He could very well be one of the new characters for Avengers 2!
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 9/18/2012, 9:05 AM
I wish Joss Whedon was a fan of the Wonder Man character.I would love to see Wonder Man fight and join the Avengers.
HelaGood - 9/18/2012, 9:12 AM
Iron Fist would be soooo awesome!!!
novaprime - 9/18/2012, 9:19 AM
Cant wait, will love to see Peter Quill AKA, STARLORD WITH THAT COOL UNIFORM AND HEMIT. IN AVG 2.
theHuch - 9/18/2012, 9:22 AM
I can't wait to see Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon on the big screen, but it has to be the perfect casting for Peter Quill and I'm afraid it is not Nathan Fillion anymore.
Hawkeyefan - 9/18/2012, 9:24 AM
All the orignial roster from the first film will be back like HAWKEYE( please more screen time),BLACK WIDOW,THOR,CAPTAIN AMERICA,HULK,IRON MAN, and Nick Fury and Maria Hill. Probably new to the team will probably be FALCON,MS. MARVEL or Someone else.
Gromblidor - 9/18/2012, 9:24 AM
Where there is an Ant Man, there is a Wasp. Those are your 2 new Characters for Avengers 2. Pym will create Ultron for shield at the end of "Ant Man" and he will be the villan in Avengers 2. Ultron will create Vision and he will turn good at the end of Avengers 2. Then the they will make Black Panther and he will be in Avengers 3 with Vision.
TwoToGo - 9/18/2012, 9:25 AM
Dude,

proofread your article before putting it online. The quotes are all messed up.
DrDoom - 9/18/2012, 9:29 AM
So Black Panther and Heroes for Hire are in development.
Sweeeeeeet. Now just add Ms. Marvel to the list.
m0th3r - 9/18/2012, 9:36 AM
@AlcoholicA "I would like to see the Heroes for Hire just beat the shít out of people for an hour and a half."

ROFL...
ATrueHero1987 - 9/18/2012, 9:37 AM
I really hope Ant-Man/Giant-Man & Wasp are in The Avengers 2 but something tells me that Falcon might be in there.
RamonSuarez - 9/18/2012, 9:37 AM
So basically Esposito is hinting that Thanos will play more of a behind the scenes type of role like Nick Fury.

I like.
AlcoholicA - 9/18/2012, 9:38 AM
Thanks to stig I must now go re-read all of Thanos Imperative tonight.....

Also, as you see above, Drax is dead, yet alive and kicking with no explanation in "Avengers Assemble"....
TheAbomination - 9/18/2012, 9:41 AM
Thanos will be the lead villain in Guardians and the Avengers, then we'll see Iron Fist, Ms. Marvel and the Panther in Phase 3...
ATrueHero1987 - 9/18/2012, 9:41 AM
Villains that HAVE to come to the big screen:
Kang
Ultron
Michael Korvac
OrganizedChaos - 9/18/2012, 9:43 AM
@AlcoholicA I second that. lol
AlcoholicA - 9/18/2012, 9:43 AM
@m0ther

It would be badass though, would it not?
TheAbomination - 9/18/2012, 9:46 AM
Also, AlcoholicA, I too find it strange that some of the characters that died during the Thanos Imperative popped up in Avengers Assemble with no explanation whatsoever.
Soze - 9/18/2012, 9:48 AM
Sure I read somewhere that Johansson had signed on to do sequels. Wouldn't be surprised to see no Renner though, he has had some negative things to say about the role of Hawkeye in the first film and if more characters are going to be introduced it seems at least one has to drop out. I'd prefer either Vision or Scarlett Witch ( is she part of Fox's rights with The X-Men? ) personally.
AlcoholicA - 9/18/2012, 9:49 AM
@TheAbomination

I haven't read the latest issue yet, but the whole Guardians of the Galaxy falling out of the sky without any head's up and everyone being alive...just everything GOTG so far in Avengers of Assemble feels as forced as Black Fury and Coulsen in 616.

I understand that GOTG needs face time to promote the movie, but let the guys who did everything Cosmic (Annihilation, war of kings, imperative, etc.) handle it.
thatiscrazy - 9/18/2012, 9:54 AM
So... About the Surfer. ya just can't do cosmic Marvel with out the surfer =( Why fox... WWWWWHHHHYYYYEEEEEE!?
superotherside - 9/18/2012, 10:05 AM
Awesome! Can't wait to see Thanos on screen!
marvel72 - 9/18/2012, 10:17 AM
whenever we see thanos be it guardians of the galaxy or the avengers 2,he's gonna steal the show.no doubt he will become the greatest comic book movie villain ever!
Jollem - 9/18/2012, 10:29 AM
fayzon10 - 9/18/2012, 10:30 AM
Let's not forget, the red skull is still out there too I'm sure he'll join the fight at some point in the future.
beane2099 - 9/18/2012, 10:38 AM
I would actually prefer a different villain for Avengers 2. Thanos and what he is needs to be built up, especially if they're going to go into the infinity gauntlet. If they wait for phase 3, it'll give em time to build up a better story and introduce more characters. Someone brought up before that Inifinity Gauntlet should actually be amovie unto itself. I would agree. Use each phase to build up to that. But that's just one way of looking at it. On the flip side that's like 20 movies all building to one thing. Crazy talk.
Equivocal - 9/18/2012, 10:38 AM
ckal - 9/18/2012, 10:43 AM
Phase 3 will clearly include:

Black Panther
Iron Fist
Doctor Strange
marvel72 - 9/18/2012, 11:12 AM
@ ckal

i hope marvel fit daredevil into phase 3 as well,if not at least a marvel knights movie universe with the punisher, moon knight, blade & so on.
AlcoholicA - 9/18/2012, 11:21 AM
@marvel72

That would be sweet. They wouldn't even have to make it a separate universe. Just make it street-level with no interference from SHIELD.
marvelmaniaco - 9/18/2012, 11:22 AM
I wouldn't mind if falcon is in avengers 2 as long as antman and wasp are in it! I really want kang and ultron as villains in later phases because they have similar yet very different ways to them kang with his army and technology to advanced for avengers to beat in straight up fight and ultron with an army of robots! With his technology and skills! Cannot wait lol also cannot wait for heroes for hire, black panther and dr strange I really want them 3 films but I also really want a namor movie!!!
bropous - 9/18/2012, 11:35 AM
I'm warming more and more to the idea of Guardians of the Galaxy. Gamora was an assassin mind-wiped and employed and trained by Thanos. This even opens the door for a possible appearance by MoondDragon. And Rocket Raccoon, if kept to the spirit of the comics as shown above, would be a real surprise box-office draw. He's not some kiddie-winkie animated character, and his violent streak is highly endearing, ha!

Kang SHOULD make it into the Avengers' Phase Three film. He is one of the greatest enemies that the Avengers ever faced, aside from Korvac or Thanos. I actually enjoyed the Kang episodes on Earth's Mightiest Heroes immensely, and could see those forming the basis for an Avengers v Kang flick.

There are SO many good story lines to tap into for the Marvel stable. I think the harder decisions for Marvel Studios has to be not who to include, but who to leave out.

And, Yoss, a worthy successor to the legacy of Tea! Nice one!
Dunejedi1 - 9/18/2012, 11:50 AM
I heard they're going to dig up Michael Jackson's corpse, reanimate him with a thingamajiggy-frammerstat and have him voice Thanos. Fingers crossed.
DevilHulk666 - 9/18/2012, 12:34 PM
jack Black to voice Rocket Raccoon
marvel72 - 9/18/2012, 12:34 PM
@ AlcoholicA

yeah mate keep them all together, the movies don't even have to be r-rated.

the dark knight showed how far you can go with violence & that was a 12.
avengers72is24601 - 9/18/2012, 1:48 PM
PHASE 3
luke cage
iron fist
black panther
thor 3 (with surtur as the villan)
captain america reborn
smartell511 - 9/18/2012, 4:21 PM
the two new characters hes mentioning in the avengers 2 is most likely ant-man and wasp. clearly if the plum villain in guardians is thanos, theyre not going to bring him back so soon in avengers 2. that being said, it seems to me that ultron could be the main baddie in avengers 2 since ant-man comes out before avengers 2 and what better way to have a secret ending in ant-man than to have hank pym create ultron.... and if you think about it, it could be 3 new members if you include vision. im sure pym and stark will create vision to help with the machine war against ultron.

PHASE 1 - dealt with origin stories, recruitment for avengers, and cosmic cube

PHASE 2 - could deal with the worlds acceptance/hatred for heroes after post chitauri war, more recruitment for avengers, and ultron
1. iron man 3 - hints at ultron
2. thor: the dark world - hints at phase 3/thanos
3. captain america: the winter soldier - hints at ultron
4. guardians of the galaxy - hints at phase 3/thanos
5. ant-man - hints at ultron
6. avengers 2 - ant-man, wasp, and vision get recruited to avengers to fight ultron and machines (maybe something with extremis virus too since the virus deals with machines)

PHASE 3 - clearly will deal with infinity gems and infinity gauntlet =D
1. captain america 3
2. black panther
3. heroes for hire
4. doctor strange
5. thor 3
6. avengers 3 - captain america, thor, hulk, iron man, black widow, hawkeye, ant-man wasp, vision, black panther, iron fist, luke cage, doctor strange, war machine, falcon, lady sif and the warriors 3, asgard warriors, guardians of the galaxy vs. thanos with the infinity gauntlet and his army of whoever.... THE MOST EPIC SUPERHERO MOVIE OF ALL TIME
kemuael - 9/18/2012, 5:18 PM
AWESOME SAUCE!!!
@stygmartyr

Yes!

@equivocal

No!
Phileo26 - 9/18/2012, 5:50 PM
@ smartell511- I love ur ideas for Phase 3!! I just think that in order to do a movie like that w/ SO many ppl they would have to split it into 2 parts like w/ Harry potter.
