We received confirmation just a few days ago that Marvel Studios' forthcoming sequel, Thor: The Dark World will film partly in Iceland, in which ‘Malekith the Accursed’ actor Christopher Eccleston revealed he'll take part in. And now today, three beautifully scenic landmarks in the Nordic Island country have apparently been identified.

According to Þórarinn Björn, @Thrugl on Twitter, the Alan Taylor-production will use a portion of his family's land, which happens to include a beautiful canyon known as Fjaðrárgljúfur. The canyon is located in South East Iceland, while the nature of the shoot is unknown as well as when shooting will take place.

The 2nd shooting location is supposedly one of Iceland's biggest waterfalls, called Skógarfoss. Located in the southern part of the country, according to Reykjavik, access to the waterfall will be limited due to filming for Thor: The Dark World, this Friday.

And last but least, Icelandic site Visir is reporting that the star Chris Hemsworth has been spotted in town, and that he'll be shooting scenes at Landmannalaugar. The famous region, popular for hiking, is located near the volcano Hekla in southern Iceland. Google Translated, the site reports that filming may last a week. Special thanks to @Thor2fans!

Exploring Thor's relationship with the Asgardian all-father Odin, as well earthbound companion Jane Foster, “Thor: The Dark World” follows the God of Thunder to The Nine Realms beyond Asgard and earth. And as his evil half-brother, Loki, returns for Asgardian justice, a new threat rises. Also rejoining Thor are his fellow Asgardians, Lady Sif, gatekeeper Heimdall and Warriors Three, as they encounter mythical Norse creatures among evildoers.

“Thor: The Dark World” stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Jaimie Alexander, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Stellan Skarsgard, Ray Stevenson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Rene Russo, with Alice Krige & Kat Dennings. And Alan Taylor (“Game of Thrones”) takes over directorial duties from Kenneth Branagh, who helmed the first “Thor” film. From a screenplay by Don Payne and Robert Rodat, “Thor: The Dark World” is set for release on November 8, 2013.

Iceland is gorgeous in its own way. That waterfall is pretty famous. It's actually where life began....at least in Prometheus.
fettastic - 10/10/2012, 11:33 AM
Iceland was populated by Vikings, so yes it is perfect for Thor.

Yup a lot of Prometheus scenes in the beginning and when they land on the alien planet were filmed in iceland and Scotland.

Grass does not naturally grow in Iceland because it consists entirely of black volcanic rock. So almost all of the green you see on the ground is moss. However the government did start dropping a type of grass that is tough enough to grow into the rock, but it is sporadic. There is grass in Rekjavik and Keflavik of course.

Because it is impossible to farm there, all fruits and vegetables are grown in a city of greenhouses called Eden.

Iceland is just completely unique. Go there at some point if you get the chance.

holy shit...
that looks [frick]ing beautiful.

I trust Alan Taylor to make a fantastic movie. He's directed some of the best episodes of GOT. I liked how he improved "that scene" in the episode Baelor, to the point where it far superior to even the book.

Iceland is beautiful! For a place named Ice-land, it's pretty green and full of life. Beautiful country! Not my intentions to stop the heat on Iceland but they should consider to come to Norway and film the fjords too. An epic battle on preikestolen would be awesome:

LeoAtrox - 10/10/2012, 1:33 PM
I am beginning to wonder if a lot of backstory will be shown in this movie ... I'm getting a vibe (totally unsubstantiated feeling) that we're going to see Dark Ages Thor in these scenes. The Thor and the Warriors Three that are the root of the Norse legends.

I worked in Iceland for a spell and it is one of my favorite places on the planet. I have been to most of the places in those pictures and no picture can really do it justice.

Icelanders rock and Thor TDW is going to be fantastic!
CoughCough - 10/10/2012, 4:57 PM

bambistark - 10/11/2012, 8:09 AM
Hiddleston was recently spot in Iceland, so maybe Loki will be found on set soon.
fettastic - 10/11/2012, 1:12 PM
Also Icelanders are gorgeous. They are decendants of vikings so most have blonde hair and blue eyes. They also have great fashion sense and an elevated standard of living.

Another strange thing about Iceland is that since it's essentially sitting on top of a volcano, all energy is generated geothermally. It also makes taking a shower smell like sulfur!

Importing any type of animal is strictly forbidden so all their animals are purebred. Of course there aren't really native species except for Puffins, etc. They have their own breed of viking horse.

The best part was The Blue Lagoon, a natural geothermal spa with powder blue water and a white, silty substrate you spread on your face. http://www.bluelagoon.com/

My greatest impression of the place is that "People are not supposed to be able to live here". It truly was like being on an alien planet.
