Conducted during San Diego Comic-Con, Wired has just posted a descent video of their exclusive chat with Iron Man 3 director Shane Black and James “Rhodey” Rhodes actor Don Cheadle. Promising a gritty, intense techno-thriller, check out all of what Black & Cheadle had to say.

“Shane is obviously bringing his own flare to it,” says Don Cheadle. “And the script that he and Drew Pearce wrote is very very different, but it still feels like...some things have to be paid off in the same way.” “That's right,” Black agreed. “In fact I owe sort of a debt to [Jon] Favreau I have to carry on what he started without violating it — at the same time bringing sort of my own enhancement if I can.”

Cheadle adds that, “[Iron Man 3] feels a little more scarily possible,” while Black continues: “We had kind of a conundrum in that The Avengers opens up this huge skyhole full of inter-dimensional aliens, and you kind of look back and [think], ’Well, what do you do after that?’ Except go back to a sort of more gritty, intense kind of techno-thriller root. You just go in and you sort of wrestle...you gotta of jerk things around a bit, and mix it up so that there's still more story to tell. And the way you do that is treat it like the first two [movies] were part of an ongoing story that hasn't finished yet. The journeys are all mythic in a way we recognize from a lot of years...mythic superhero stories. Today's world is so complicated that the simplicity of myth has come back around the desire, or need for people to feel and see that that's unprecedented; given how just confusing the world is right now.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

@intruder
agree
DioFoRio - 12/4/2012, 12:19 PM
So they're doing the Demon in a Butthole story?
LFANCH - 12/4/2012, 12:26 PM
@dionysios actually, I think he said they weren't going into his alcoholism.
OtakuPapi - 12/4/2012, 12:26 PM
Don Cheadle looks 60 geez. He looks like a grandpa
jimpinto24 - 12/4/2012, 12:29 PM
Iron Man 3 has a more serious tone. We see Tony Stark becoming more mature since the events of The Avengers.
GodzillaKart - 12/4/2012, 12:32 PM
Sounds fantastic.

So glad they are not touching the "Demon in a Bottle" story.

I like my Stark a fun drunk. Problem drunks are such a buzz kill.
SageMode - 12/4/2012, 12:37 PM
I'm just waiting to see what Mandarin's rings can do......but so far, this definitely sounds like the best of the trilogy. Only time well tell......

FETTASTIC

I think Jamie Foxx would've been a better War Machine than Cheadle and Howard, but Cheadle was more convincing in that role than Howard IMO.

I'm really excited for this. I didn't really like the last two films but this one looks and sounds very promising.
Jollem - 12/4/2012, 12:52 PM
in the director's commentary for iron man 2, jon favs clearly states that the silly, awkward drunk scene "was as close to Demon in a Bottle as they were going to do".

so...that was it. they took one of best stories from iron man's lore and nerfed it. that's what we got. the ball was dropped on that one
Greengo - 12/4/2012, 12:53 PM
Ummmm... I can't believe I just sat through a [frick]ing Lysol wipes commercial for that Trudy -_-
Durf - 12/4/2012, 1:06 PM
I really like what I'm hearing and seeing for this movie. It really looks like it has potential to be the best of the trilogy. Can't wait!

Nice find DCMF. Fantastic work as always.

looking 4ward to this....

downey is the man
Maximus101 - 12/4/2012, 1:17 PM
Im excited to see this movie, it sounds promising. I like how the usual haters in here praise anything marvel but anything that is dc they hate lol
beane2099 - 12/4/2012, 1:33 PM
I'm sorry, but why is it so damn necessary that they do Demon in a Bottle? I think 2 pretty much WAS their version of Demon in a Bottle. This isn't like the comics. We get one movie every couple years. There's but so much screen time you get to tell Iron Man stories. Why do that twice? Whether or not you liked IM 2 is irrelevant to that point. The point is, we've seen Tony descend into excess and come back from it. That's my take nayways.
kemuael - 12/4/2012, 1:40 PM
AM SO PUMPED!!!!!
Jollem - 12/4/2012, 1:46 PM
@beane2099 - Demon in a Bottle is one of iron man's few great stories that he has. i think a lot of people were expecting it from the start as soon as they heard who was cast for tony stark. i was one of those. i think they should have at least used the alternate scene they filmed for it in iron man 2. it was more impactful. but...they pretty much crapped on the story line and that's that
Funsize - 12/4/2012, 1:55 PM
so excited for this movie!!! I never knew iron man 2 had so much hate though. I thought it was an ok movie but not a good one.
TheAbomination - 12/4/2012, 2:08 PM
Based on what I've seen from the Lethal Weapon movies (and the first IM3 trailer), I trust Shane. This movie will kick ass.
TheFirstAvenger97 - 12/4/2012, 2:19 PM
^ ckal and Nerd are right.
aresww3 - 12/4/2012, 2:19 PM
sounds to me like Pepper Pots is going to die.
Jollem - 12/4/2012, 2:21 PM
@TheNerdicon - i'm sure they could have done justice to, and made a kick-ass story line based off of the story compared to what we got. maybe even have it played out throughout all three movies. who knows?
Jollem - 12/4/2012, 2:28 PM
also, "there is no External antagoinst, therefore no fights, therefore a snoozefest" is something i don't agree with. although fighting and cgi and 'splosions are a good time, the internal struggle with characters and character development and all that is the meat for many, many stories. not just in movies, either
BasedThanos - 12/4/2012, 2:42 PM
Sounds great.
jimoakley666 - 12/4/2012, 3:13 PM
I find it very odd that Americans keep saying that "the world is so confusing now" and "These are strange times we live in".

The rest of the world is just as [frick]ed up and odd as it always was. The only difference is America has now joined the 'we got our arse slapped club'. The IRA were blowing our shit up on a daily basis here (Britain) in the 80's and we didn't wander around so confounded with life. You just have to get on with it, boys.
XavierLehnsherr - 12/4/2012, 3:28 PM
I'm going into alcoholism.
figuresmaniac - 12/4/2012, 3:37 PM
Is it just me or Cheadle looks old and shrinking?
I know he is a great actor but i prefer Foxx as Rhodes
SageMode - 12/4/2012, 3:55 PM
And one of the usual suspects arrives.
in response, I would say something concerning WB/DC's box office track record, but it speaks for itself.

Until the mean time, lets enjoy Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the critically acclaimed fourth highest grossing movie franchise of all time.
MarkV - 12/4/2012, 4:14 PM
NOT interested in Demon in a Bottle.
Fogs - 12/4/2012, 4:16 PM
Awesome as usual.

@figuresmaniac - being captain planet is tiring.
NeoBaggins - 12/4/2012, 4:36 PM
I totally respect how this guy considers what Favreau laid down while forging a new tone for Iron Man- at the same time, mindful of theAvengers scope and going into a smaller Iron Man story on the heels of it. I'm looking forward to this.

Cereal for everyone.

Maximus101 - 12/4/2012, 7:41 PM
@marvel12 don't need to cause I'm not trolling I am simply declaring a statment without hate. if you were grown up you could know the difference between trolling and everything else. I only to tell you to grow up cause you constantly troll batman articles.
Maximus101 - 12/4/2012, 7:41 PM
@kennyrogers come on now don't be upset lol
UrbanKnight - 12/4/2012, 7:45 PM
"gritty, intense kind of techno-thriller".
Sounds DARK to me. lol.
mgeoff88 - 12/4/2012, 8:10 PM
With Shane Black, you have to expect gritty and intense. I'm glad Don Cheadle is back in IM3.

I prefer him to Terrence Howard. He may have looked more like Rhodey from the comics, but his performance was flat IMHO.
PapaMidnite - 12/5/2012, 1:02 PM
I think IM3 has potential to become the best of the trilogy. Can't wait to see RDJ as Stark again!
