THOR: THE DARK WORLD: ‘Kurse’ Is A “Lava-Like Bull,” Says Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Making yet another effort to discuss his dual villain role in the Marvel sequel, while promoting his recent actioner, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje talks about filming Thor: The Dark World.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje recently spoke with the LA Times’ Hero Complex about his role as the baddie of Bullet of the Head as well as Marvel’s second Phase Two venture, Thor: The Dark World. Seemingly indicating that Algrim the Strong/Kurse’s comic counterparts will translate directly on-screen, Adewale says, “It’s an amalgamation of a bull and a lava-like creature. He has very animalistic tendencies but with this insatiable and unstoppable power. As an actor, that’s one of the hardest things to embody. You have to realize you are probably the most powerful thing you could imagine. And you have to be that. You can’t pretend, so that when you face Thor, it’s real.”

Rehashing on the filming process, Akinnuoye-Agbaje continues, “The outfit weighed about 40 pounds. I’m sure there will be a certain amount of CGI but a good 80% was me in that suit,” said Akinnuoye-Agbaje. “The outfit informed how I was going to move – the horns – his fighting style as well. It’s almost like he’s made out of stone.” In a separate interview with Media Mikes, the English actor lengthily added that the Alan Taylor-directed Thor: The Dark World provided “A huge opportunity to pull double duty. In order to prepare you obviously go through and read the comics and research the characters history. You also look at the imagery and have discussions with Marvel and the directors to see their vision for the characters. Then the rest is left for the designers who create the costumes, which really then assists in your performance. Specifically for Kurse, it was very much looking at the costume and what I thought it would embody. For instance it had a certain look, so I used that look for his interpretive actions. I found that very useful. So with the horns and everything, I just went with that flow and tried to define a way of moving and fighting that was in the rhythm and the way that he looked. With Algrim, again the aesthetic look and the outfit really factored in as does the location and the set. From the moment you step into that world, you immediately become that character. You make them real. So in a way you have to ground the character in reality that makes it normal for them to be in that world. I believe and hope that we have done that well in this & that the audiences are going to enjoy it.”

Marvel Studios’ “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo & Anthony Hopkins as Odin, “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery” #83 in August, 1962. “Thor: The Dark World” is presented by Marvel Studios. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso, Craig Kyle and Nigel Gostelow. The film releases November 8, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios.

Now this is my most anticipated movie this year. This movie will kick ass.Marvel needs to hurry up and release some pics and posters.I'm ready to see KURSE.I'm sure the first trailer for TDW will be with IM3.

Good stuff DCMF, as always.

Can't wait for the trailer in April.
KeefNCookies - 2/2/2013, 10:40 AM
I'm ready for the Dark World. Never gonna stop being pissed about Thor's helmet-neglect, but I'm really looking forward to this. Hated the amount of Earth time in #1 and the downgrade of Destroyer power. Here's to other worlds and praying Kurse will really bring the pain!!
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/2/2013, 10:56 AM
@KeefNCookies Destroyer was my only gripe about the first movie.Destroyer vs. Thor should have been a bloody brawl, with Thor providing all the blood. No way Thor should have beaten Destroyer so easily and so quickly.Hell,Thor gets his ass beat in the comics by imposter Destroyer armors.
Valandil - 2/2/2013, 11:00 AM
I know what is going on... AAA IS the sniper.
Cool then, boys.
DrDoom - 2/2/2013, 11:07 AM
Why can't every actor give interviews like Adewale?
Dumegg - 2/2/2013, 11:09 AM
I agree. The destroyer is a badass. He got beat way to easy. I think marvel cut corners
With the last 30 min of that movie. They wanted to keep it a 2 hr movie. Marvel could
Have given us an extra 15 min of movie.
2Challa - 2/2/2013, 11:11 AM
It is sad that DC/WB has been in partnership so long and have yet to put two heroes on screen at the same time but marvel has and is moving on successfully. Avengers is the 3rd highest selling movie of all time and I enjoyed all of Phase 1 so far. DC/WB couldnt give 2 $#!+$ about their fans and it shows all the time. Good luck ever getting a Justice League movie out (There is still no confirmation of any sort). Thor the dark world will be all the epicness of Game of Thrones and all the fun of 80s Fantasy movies. Ironman 3 will be the best in the series and will out sell Man of Steel this year. I love both companies but the treatment WB has shown DC over the years is any indication than the future of DC movies isn't too bright.

Marvel movies>>> DC movies
T:TDW> IM3> MOS >TW
thefirstavenger97 - 2/2/2013, 11:17 AM

"And then you hold your hand like this and say No, I... am your Allfather."

Dumegg - 2/2/2013, 11:21 AM
It seems like WB doesnt like making an long term plans when it comes to
Building their DC movie universe. They seem to be happy with firing off
Stand alone comic movies. They like the quick pay off.
thorhulk77 - 2/2/2013, 11:24 AM
Cant wait :)
Nomadic1 - 2/2/2013, 11:27 AM
I want to see him in costume so bad. AAA is gonna look so bad-ass.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/2/2013, 11:32 AM
@Hush2010 I agree with everything you just said.DC/WB have all their rights to characters and they don't give a damn about making a cinematic universe.I love Marvel but there are DC characters that I care about and would love to see movies made about.DC/WB would rather make disasters like Catwoman,The Losers, and Jonah Hex before they make The Flash,Wonder Woman,Teen Titans,or even The Legion of Superheroes.DC/WB needs to get their shit together and they need to get a new writer for the Justice League script. After the Gangster Squad,I have no faith in that Will Beall script.
rockerdude22 - 2/2/2013, 11:45 AM
Can't wait to see footage for this film!

On the topic of DC/WB, I'll say this. It seems like Marvel likes to think outside-the-box when it comes to their decisions for actors, writers, and directors. So far, I think that's really paid off and their success really shows because of it. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for DC/WB. They only seem to choose actors and directors who they think will simply sell the film and not who's the best person for the job. Why do you guys think they casted RR as GL and a Gossip Girl actress as the leading lady?

DC/WB needs to learn to think outside-the-box and choose directors, writers, and actors who are the best candidates for the job and not people who will simply sell the film.
sKeemAn - 2/2/2013, 12:02 PM
I really want to see pics of him in costume. He's going to be a badass
Shamo - 2/2/2013, 12:05 PM
hope it turns out well. i think Thor's one of top 5 CBM's to date.
G3n3r4lzZoD9 - 2/2/2013, 12:08 PM
@Hush2010
Then just create a dream world where all those DC properties have movies... ;)

Can we leave the DC talk in DC related articles. This is about Thor.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/2/2013, 12:31 PM
@batz11 Surtur has to be the big baddie in Thor 3.If he is teased in Thor:TDW like Thanos was in The Avengers I would go crazy in the theater.I'm also ready to see Enchantress,The Executioner, and Balder The Brave.
wallhead - 2/2/2013, 12:33 PM
Loving his new look. I also like how the nameless asgardians' gear look like how they did in the first movie. Keeps a bit of continuity.
2Challa - 2/2/2013, 12:44 PM
@G3n3r4lzZ0D
I would if I could
JonasWepeel - 2/2/2013, 12:47 PM
This is shaping up mighty nice.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/2/2013, 12:48 PM
@wallhead I agree.I'm glad the Asgardian guards/soldiers still have the same look.Great for continuity.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/2/2013, 12:55 PM
@ballzdeep I do think we and other people on CBM need to stop acting like a**holes and stay on topic and don't bring up stuff when it doesn't have nothing to do with the article.I hate flame wars and I try my best to stay out of them.We as CBMers need to be more respectful on these threads towards each other.
YoungThanos - 2/2/2013, 12:57 PM
I'm really looking forward to this movie!
G3n3r4lzZoD9 - 2/2/2013, 1:00 PM
@Hush2010
The Ninja Alliance is getting in your way is it?
DrDoom - 2/2/2013, 1:16 PM
@MarvelPsycho

I'd be happy to see Surtur as well, but I want Enchantress & Executioner first. Surtur for Thor 4 plz
billytwohats - 2/2/2013, 1:37 PM
The first movie was well made but I just didn't like the characters. Thor and Odin where far too nice not enough Norse Mythology for me. I mean Odins horse was sired by Loki, yeah the movie reminded me too much of the 80s HeMan movie.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 2/2/2013, 1:40 PM
@DCMF how do you always get these marvel scoops. Keep them coming man, & good work. I need to quench my marvel thirst. If u can find some scoops on costume designs for the other films that would be the ultimate scoop. #MVP.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 2/2/2013, 1:41 PM
Thor was a good movie till the end. Marvel will ne giving us better endings like avengers I hope.
nowtheresaBATman - 2/2/2013, 2:00 PM
This better be good because I'm getting bored.
The Incredible Hulk is the only Marvel movie so far that's been entirely good from start to finsh-ironic since it seems Marvel itself has no love for it.Iron Man is close but the end showdown w/ Iron "the dude" Monger is laughable. Captain America was boring & Steve Rogers looks like he's wearing a halloween costume in the Avengers. The only thing good about the Avengers is Thor vs Hulk & all the scenes w/ Bruce Banner. The rest is shitauri. That blabber crap being said I have high hopes for Thor 2, Winter Soldier (as long as it doesn't have any romantic kisses while plunging down a runway at 120 mph) & IM3.
AlexDeLarge87 - 2/2/2013, 2:26 PM
Hope the fight between him and Chris is long.
DONT LET THOR EASY!
