Teased in the various frames from yesterday’s theatrical trailer, it’s no secret that Marvel has borrowed several elements from Warren Ellis’ celebrated Extremis story arc, for the much-anticipated third Iron Man installment. Speaking with SFX Magazine, director Shane Black explained precisely how the Extremis virus will translate on-screen, both visually and scientifically.

“In the Extremis comic book, there’s a type of thing that takes over and basically upgrades DNA. Sometimes you die. But if you live through the experience then you come out this changed thing. But the way they do it is the guy that does it is not some man chosen to be the super soldier -he’s just a militia guy. There’s an element of realism to it as well. So what we’ve tried to do is take this very science-fictiony concept of super people, and ground it in the type of people who volunteer for this being not necessarily super villains, but just people who upgrade. I love the idea of a super villain that doesn’t wear a cape, that doesn’t wear a super suit. That goes around dressed as you are right now. As for the science of it, once again we’ve gone back to the comic books, and I think pretty much lifted the Maya Hensen idea, that she met [Tony] long ago and had the germ of an idea, which now has come to fruition full circle, but she’s afraid because it’s gotten out there. And we go from there. I think you’ll be interested in the effect that we generate to demonstrate what Extremis does to a human being. It’s a pretty interesting special effect. But we’ve deliberately stayed away from defining, ‘Oh it’s nanites.’ What we do keep from the comic is the idea that there’s a slot in the brain that seems to have been dormant, but exists in human beings, almost as though it’s waiting for human beings to find a way to fill it.It’s been there forever.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Marvel Studios will also release “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel’s The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

I still feel like there is more to the Mandarin than they are saying. Imagine in the final showdown Kingsley takes off the robe and is completely ripped. Then him and IM duke it out for 20 minutes. Oh god one can only hope.
NorrinRaddical - 3/6/2013, 10:53 AM

I'm glad they haven't gone the whole hog with Extremis. It's looking like it means no fire-breathing etc too. Maybe just a bit like Captain America but a little more squiffy.

I'm wondering if Pepper gets a dose in the film too. That scene of her crying while in the same Extremis harness. And then in her underwear next to a burning shipping container.

Also, I wonder if Maya has the same ending in the film as she does in the comic? It would be interesting.

@NorrinRaddical @blackandyellow
LOL yh she's annoying as fuuck but no1 watches her videos for what she has to say so the mute button will probably become your best friend on her videos.

BasedThanos - 3/6/2013, 11:34 AM
@fett
I'm somewhat hoping they don't have the armor come out of his skin (probably will). But the armor flying to him I don't have a problem with.

All I'm saying is that the Mandarin's rings better be more than just fancy accessories.
hoodedjester - 3/6/2013, 1:02 PM
looking forward to seeing this one. Here's hoping it's on par with the first one and so much better than number 2
unknownfacts - 3/6/2013, 1:27 PM
This looks like another great year for comic book movies wonder how long will it last.
MrE - 3/6/2013, 1:32 PM
The harnesses the "upgrades" are standing in look like what Pepper is in at one point in the trailer.
CorronZenith30 - 3/6/2013, 2:07 PM

Jollem - 3/6/2013, 2:25 PM
