Joss Whedon On Drafting THE AVENGERS 2; Hints At New Brother/Sister Characters?

While attending the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Iron Man 3, Yahoo Movies caught up with Joss Whedon, writer-director of Marvel’s The Avengers big assembly & creative consultant of Marvel’s upcoming slate, to discuss the status of the hotly-anticipated 2015 sequel. Watch the vid!

“I have actually finished a draft, we’re in a very good place. It's going really well, eventually somebody will explain to me that it's not. But I've been writing, meeting with actors, and we're starting to storyboard and all the preliminary processes. This is the part where it's all still fun. It’s an evolution, and that goes on all through shooting and it never stops. I’ve done enough shows and movies to be comfortable with that. You do come to a point where we all agree …‘Oh, I've got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books; a brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.’ You lock certain things in. But then there’s a certain fluidity when you’re working with Robert [Downey Jr.]. He’s going to want to do something new on the day, and you’re going to want him to, because it’s going to be funny. So you always keep yourself open. I try not to think of it as topping The Avengers, I try to think of this as its own movie.”

“And by the way, Shane [Black] not helping! Iron Man 3 not helping! I see this and said, ‘Aw, man, he really got it right!’ The pressure continues! When Tony sees another superhero, he increases his swagger. Tony, he sees Thor, and he says, ‘Yeah, I got a suit of muscles that big. I invented it! Oh, you can pick up a hammer? You’re so special!’ He sees it as a challenge! He loves it.”

As underlined above, Joss Whedon seemingly implied that, at some point, his draft for The Avengers sequel featured two new characters who are siblings. The most famous brother/sister act in the Marvel Comics is certainly Wanda & Pietro Maximoff, better known as Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver. Concerning which studio owns the mutant duo’s rights, Marvel president Kevin Feige said last year, “It’s a little complicated; If [Fox] wants to use them in an X-Men movie they could, if we want to use them in an Avengers movie we could.” Only speculation as of now, but what do you think?

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013!; & “Thor 2” on November 8, 2013.

SpoonWielder - 4/24/2013, 11:46 PM

DCMarvelFreshman - 4/24/2013, 11:50 PM
@sansClaymore Picked up on that too. I was gonna make a big deal of it in the article, but I'm a bit sleepy (2:50 AM here). I'm to catch some zzzzzz now though.
sansClaymore - 4/24/2013, 11:54 PM

sansClaymore - 4/24/2013, 11:57 PM
ill shit bricks if days of future past bridges the two franchises. it could work with the whole timeline mutidimensional universes converging from a flux in the capacitor at 88 miles an hour MARTY!!!!!!!
Stutzman - 4/25/2013, 12:00 AM
nice!
CorronZenith30 - 4/25/2013, 12:02 AM
Iron man 3 was really good IMO but Ive got some questions to ask... ill wait until the States has seen it first though before I start asking, not big on the trolling biz :-)
DetectiveMartinHart - 4/25/2013, 12:09 AM
Wait, What if in the end of the Avengers 2 it's revealed that the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe is just the Incoherent imagination of River Tamm, spending the time day-dreaming while the crew of the Serentity take her to the doll-house program
Lockjaw - 4/25/2013, 12:10 AM
Mutants in Avengers 2!?!?!?!?!?! DoFP tie in?!? FF tie in?!? Spider-man tie in?!? :-o
Banner - 4/25/2013, 12:10 AM
@Sithlord.. damn right it will be explosive with speedy and the red Witch.

@sKeemAn... Cap is the leader but he ain't kicking ass like Thor, Iron-Man and the Hulk, watched the movie again.
ahhmynuts - 4/25/2013, 12:15 AM
@skeeman
i wouldnt be opposed to cap getting more screen time, or anyone for that matter, but priority is make the movie great. cant just stick more cap scenes in there because hes the leader at the expense of the movie. they almost did that in Avengers and we all know how good that movie turned out.

Ya you guys are right. Brother Sister act, i don't know who else that can be.
DetectiveMartinHart - 4/25/2013, 12:34 AM
Obviously he's gonna pull an Oldboy and right in the middle of Hawkeye and Black Widow sharing a kiss Hakweye finds out that he has been hypnotized, his time at SHIELD has really been imprisonment, and that B.W. is his sister.
l0rdleg0las - 4/25/2013, 12:36 AM
i am sorry to say this, but i truly hope that there is a lot less focus on Iron Man the 2nd time around. Cap and Thor got severely short changed in the first movie, and at times it seemed more like "Iron Man and his superhero buddies and 2 token agents" more than The Avengers
pesmerga44 - 4/25/2013, 12:36 AM
There will be no x-men tie in because MCU can use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as long as there is no mention of Magneto or mutants I believe definitely not Magneto or X-men not sure if mutants is off limit. They fell into an area where they belong to either Fox or Marvel it is all in how they are worded.
KingLing - 4/25/2013, 12:37 AM
I remember reading a while back that Marvel could use Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but they wouldn't be able to explain how they got their powers, unless they got it some other way than by being mutants.

Weird contract stuff, since mutants as a species belongs to Fox, I guess. But I'd still be stoked!
ComicFan509 - 4/25/2013, 12:37 AM
I don't know how they would be able to explain QS and SW back story without mentioning Magneto and mutants. Which from what I've heard (and I could be wrong) Marvel isn't even allowed to mention mutants due to the movie rights. IDK though, I guess if anyone could make it work it's Joss.
ComicFan509 - 4/25/2013, 12:39 AM
lol. @ KingLing @Pesmerga44. We all thought the same thing at like the same time.
DEATHbyEXILE - 4/25/2013, 12:42 AM
Who can it be?
Human Torch and Invisible Woman
Franklin and Valeria
Quicsilver and Scarlet Witch
Quicksilver and Polaris
Collosus and Magik
Northstar and Aurora
Capt. Britain and Psylocke
Cannonball and Husk
Genis Vell and PhylaVell
Hulkling and PhyllaVell
Cable and Rachel Summers/Grey
X-Man and Rachel Summers/Grey
Slipstream and Lifeguard
Daken and X23
Daimon Hellstrom and Satana
RexDartEskimoSpy - 4/25/2013, 12:43 AM
He clearly means Luke and Leia. Duh.
DEATHbyEXILE - 4/25/2013, 12:44 AM
Or T'Challa & Shuri
DEATHbyEXILE - 4/25/2013, 12:49 AM

pesmerga44 - 4/25/2013, 12:51 AM
@DeathByExile

The only one of those pairs I do not know is Slipstream and Lifeguard never even heard of them before.
Equivocal - 4/25/2013, 12:51 AM
DetectiveMartinHart - 4/25/2013, 12:53 AM
Seriously, no-one like my Lee Woo-jin and Lee Soo-ah sugestion? man that blows!
MrLoki - 4/25/2013, 12:55 AM
I really, really hope it's Quicsilver and Scarlet Witch! I love them so much! :)))
Minato - 4/25/2013, 1:08 AM
Either Wanda and Pietro oe T'Challa ans Shuri
Banner - 4/25/2013, 1:08 AM
@death... funniest shit I've ever seen of Josh Whedon.
Triptheorist - 4/25/2013, 1:34 AM
I was hoping for Antman & Wasp.
AUSSYACE - 4/25/2013, 1:39 AM
WITH THE NEW C & D GRADE CHARACTERS SLIDING IN...

WHAT A JOKE...
RPD - 4/25/2013, 1:42 AM
So, Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch can be in The Avengers, even though they're mutants, because they are Avengers? Does that extend to other mutant characters, like Wolverine, who are also Avengers? I wouldn't think so, but I'm no expert on these things...
JerBear - 4/25/2013, 1:45 AM
@skeeman
Cap already had the most screen time in the movie.
Luminus - 4/25/2013, 1:52 AM
Okay so here's the list:

Starhawk (Stakar Ogord)
Aleta Ogord

Quicksilver (Pietro Django Maximoff)
Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff)

Hawkeye (Clinton Francis Barton)
Mockingbird (Barbara Barton)

So it MUST be Wanda and Pietro, because no one FAVS any of those other choices.
Lockjaw - 4/25/2013, 1:52 AM
Does this mean they could use Beast as he was a prominent Avenger?!?

It would be good if they introduce mutants in the MCU or it gets harder to keep coming up with the origins of superpowers...
Luminus - 4/25/2013, 2:02 AM
@logicoflame: Oh, wait, you might be on to something. He does say brother/sister ACT, instead of just saying they're brother and sister. And Hawkeye and Mockingbird are a married couple. Oops.
zmikey - 4/25/2013, 2:15 AM
Would they be able to use the Ultimate origins for Mutants? Say something like SHIELD tested on people, eventually Wanda & Pietro where an offspring, SHIELD secretly kept tabs on them, then they cause shit in their village & were brought in as TOP SECRET agents (cause, yknow, no one would know about the testing thing) and are only brought out cause the threat is so big that they're needed.
Either way, I hope they use their Ultimates costume- Wanda's may be sorta impractical but damn if it doesn't look amazing!
