Coulson’s Revival In AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Explained?

Sources of Slash Film have come across an explanation as to how Marvel’s The Avengers director Joss Whedon plans to resurrect Clark Gregg’s beloved S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. small-screen adaptation, after the character appeared to be killed off amid last year’s superhero assembly. While the explanation is a highly speculated one, apparently…

In the pilot, it’s revealed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the ultimate super spy, faked Agent Coulson’s death on purpose to motivate The Avengers. Some S.H.I.E.L.D. members were in on it (including, possibly, Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders) but The Avengers were not. Their security clearance wasn’t high enough. Coulson was forced to hold his breath as part of the ruse and that’s a point of contention among his colleagues After the fact, Fury moved him to a remote location until things died down, and then he was reinserted into duty at the time of the show.

You may recall a bit of Nick Fury’s tactic coming into play in Marvel’s The Avengers when Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) called him out on the (fake) bloodied Captain America trading cards; “They needed the push,” he said. This makes what’s being reported above a little bit unsurprising. Anyhow, as Slash Flash further notes, it’s still unknown how Loki’s scepter didn’t get the job done or how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will affect Phase 2 of the cinematic universe, but what do you think?

Joss Whedon shows us not all heroes are super with MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven’t been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They’ll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual – of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents – that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world. Executive Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb comes Marvel’s first live-action TV series, MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Well, that's stupid, to put it mildly of course...
Reasonnnn - 4/26/2013, 1:19 PM
Disappointing. My avatar does not approve.
SpoonWielder - 4/26/2013, 1:19 PM
@TheDIsSilent
Really? I think that's the most logical way to do it.

I don't think Maria Hill knew though, I think she suspects. She was questioning Fury about the trading cards.
KeefNCookies - 4/26/2013, 1:19 PM
Um... what? Why not introduce LMDs for real? I hope there's more to it than just that...
Reasonnnn - 4/26/2013, 1:19 PM
WE ARE NOT SOLDIERS - My avatar once said.
marcvader1 - 4/26/2013, 1:20 PM
That's utterly stupid if true.
SuperSpiderMan5778 - 4/26/2013, 1:23 PM
that is lame i mean what about the convo fury had with coulson..."i'm clocking boss" "not an option"....i mean what was all that?
CaptainObvious - 4/26/2013, 1:24 PM
This is stupid beyond belief. Why would Coulson have to hold his breath in front of Fury if Fury was in on it? If it was to fool the medics, why couldn't Fury let the medics in on the ruse? It's not like they would tell the Avengers. They are part of SHIELD and therefore are obligated to keep secrets. Also, if this was their plan, then when did they have time to come up with it? How did Fury know that Loki wouldn't obliterate Coulson or decapitate him when he confronted Loki? How did Coulson survive being stabbed in the heart?
SpoonWielder - 4/26/2013, 1:27 PM
I think it was more of "Shoot, Coulson's been stabbed, wait I can use this!"

I don't think it was a "Okay, so you go in this room and let Loki ram his spear through your heart, that'll get the Avengers on his tail"
Destruktor2k - 4/26/2013, 1:29 PM
I really don't give a flying moneky's ass on how he is back. I am just happy that he is alive

Plus, look at the big picture, this might be the reason for The avengers to detach themselves from SHIELD once they find out he is am effing liar. since his death was the reason the team got together, this will be an event for them to question the integrity of the team and whether they should still be a team in avengers 2.

Plus Nick Fury has always been a manipulative, lying bastards in the comics.

and to sum it up: COULSON LIVES, FURY LIES!!!
BigDamnHero - 4/26/2013, 1:29 PM
Well, whatever the explanation it would've been pretty stupid. So I don't really care that much... As long as the show's good, go for it Joss.

It'll be interesting to see The Avenger's reactions to the news. I wonder if Black Widow was in on it?
CavEl - 4/26/2013, 1:35 PM
What kind of medical team doesn't know a dead person from a person that's just holding their breath?

PsychoManiacJacky - 4/26/2013, 1:38 PM
I think this is an awesome idea and it even sets up the perfect plot for The Avengers 2. It would just bring the tension up even more in the movie. The Avenger's can't trust Nick Fury anymore, Tony Stark goes on the edge about it. It could bring out a wild crazy storyline for The Avengers 2. I don't know why everyone hates the idea it has lot's of potential.
maryboo - 4/26/2013, 1:39 PM
Great, so now death will be as meaningless in the movies as it is in the comics.
Goggles - 4/26/2013, 1:40 PM
Bringing Coulson back to life, and in such a dumb manner, will render all future deaths in the MCU useless and meaningless.

And remember, folks: just hold your breath and no one will know the difference.
ruadh - 4/26/2013, 1:41 PM
Don't believe it at all. Whedon and Gregg keep saying "revived", and that he DID die. They aren't saying he never died.

Again, if Maria Hill is going to call Fury out on the bloodied cards, it's stupid that she wouldn't call him out on the even BIGGER lie.

Baloney.
Dumegg - 4/26/2013, 1:42 PM
For all the smart creative people over at marvel, " coulson was holding his breath " was
The best they could come up with.
PsychoManiacJacky - 4/26/2013, 1:46 PM
I predict his newest disguise appearance...

ruadh - 4/26/2013, 1:48 PM
I actually don't know if Fury will even be much of a factor after the way he acted during the battle in Avengers, especially with Robert Redford seeming to be in charge of SHIELD in Cap 2?
ruadh - 4/26/2013, 1:49 PM
@blackandyellow

"Sure boss. Should I go ahead and do that thing where I don't finish what I'm-...."
JDUKE25 - 4/26/2013, 1:49 PM
Sooooooo stupid
ruadh - 4/26/2013, 1:50 PM
This article is 25 days late.
CaptainObvious - 4/26/2013, 1:50 PM
The idea of the Avengers being pissy with Fury about lying is a lame idea. Now all they will do is just whine about how "SHIELD can't be trusted and Fury is a liar and blah, blah, blah." Besides, this whole idea serves no purpose because the Avengers already know SHIELD has secrets. So why would they be upset that they discovered another lie?

I'm so looking forward to the team having trust issues and whining about them instead of saving the world from Thanos.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 4/26/2013, 1:50 PM
It's like I keep saying: When Stark finds out that Coulson's not dead it'll be the straw that broke the camel's back. The Avengers will cut ties with SHIELD and officially become their own organization.
marvelmaniaco - 4/26/2013, 1:51 PM
Makes perfect sense. Simple yet effective
ruadh - 4/26/2013, 1:53 PM
@RexDartEskimoSpy

They pretty much ARE their own organization already. Stark was making Avengers tower at the end of the movie, not SHIELD tower.

Also, sorry, but Whedon and Gregg have both said Coulson is resurrected. Not faked death, resurrected.
OrgasmicPotatoe - 4/26/2013, 1:55 PM
I always thought it was one of the most stupid decision to bring back Coulson. I didn't like the character that much, had more hate than love for him in fact. Plus, he died (on-screen). Leave him dead.

Next thing you know, Superman is going to die and come back three times in Man of Steel.
MarkV - 4/26/2013, 1:56 PM
Totally ridiculous.
LucasMend - 4/26/2013, 1:56 PM
This is stupid, then the avengers motivation was for nothing. [frick]ing great huh marvel -_-
Donekin - 4/26/2013, 1:56 PM
There's no way that this is accurate. Joss Whedon would not let this fly. According to this account, wither Loki was in on staging Coulson's death or Fury whispered to guy with a scepter size hole in his ribs to "hold your breath for the cameras"? Nope. My money is on a much more plausible explanation in which "...then get to the armory" was code for "activate your life model decoy and send him in alone against the Norse god to get wasted." Then the whole scene between Fury and dying Coulson LMD could have been act.
TheRedSkull - 4/26/2013, 1:56 PM
The obvious but decent way. It opens for the Avengers to disassemble next time they're called upon and find out. More turmoil and less of trusting Fury. Makes for a great story
thorhulk77 - 4/26/2013, 1:57 PM
Coulson lives!!!!
GodzillaKart - 4/26/2013, 1:58 PM
I love the character, but if you don't want to kill him, then please just don't kill him.
ruadh - 4/26/2013, 1:58 PM
@TheRedSkull
"The obvious but decent way. It opens for the Avengers to disassemble next time they're called upon and find out. More turmoil and less of trusting Fury. Makes for a great story"

Great stories based on incredibly flawed logic are not great stories. Suspension of disbelief can go only so far.
GodzillaKart - 4/26/2013, 1:59 PM
I will add, however, that if they pull this off and make it cool, I'll be impressed.
superotherside - 4/26/2013, 1:59 PM
Depending on how it is done, I think it could be good or it could be bad. I'm not going to judge it until I see it.
thorhulk77 - 4/26/2013, 2:00 PM
You guys are saying they had nothing to avenge now. So you ignorantly believe that they still wouldnt have saved the world from Loki's invasion even if he had survived.
TheFox - 4/26/2013, 2:01 PM
That... is bullshit.

They better have a better explanation than this in the show, 'cause otherwise one of the strongest emotional beats in the Avengers has just been flushed down the goddamn toilet.

(Then again, I have no doubt that this is bull, since Clark Gregg has said time and again that Coulson's been through an ordeal that has changed him... faking one's own death does not constitute an ordeal.)

venom2019 - 4/26/2013, 2:02 PM
I [frick]ING KNEW IT!

@TheFox

Excellent point.
