GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: Expect 'Colorful, Bright And Pulpy' Sci-Fi Says Associate Producer

Kevin Feige answers whether he's nervous about bringing Guardians of the Galaxy to the big-screen while associate producer Jonathan Schwartz recalls James Gunn's pitch about the film's science fiction.

In addition to Kevin Feige's recent thoughts about The Avengers: Age of Ultron, SFX Magazine also asked the Marvel Studios honcho whether he's the least bit nervous about Guardians of the Galaxy, given it's their biggest unknown quantity. “Not really, because we really believe in them,” he replies. “And not only in the way they've been portrayed in the comic books over the years, but also in the new ideas that we have to bring them to the screen. There's definitely a comparison to be made between Iron Man & Guardians of the Galaxy because it's easy to forget that Iron Man was not well known when that first film came out. Back then I had to spend a lot time explaining to people that Iron Man is not a robot and he's actually a person and a scientist, who builds this suit. He doesn't fly like Superman, he has to obey the laws of physics. Likewise with Guardians of the Galaxy; it's based on a comic that has a certain following but nobody should feel bad if they've never heard of it because we're expecting that most people haven't.” Adding to his comment that Marvel has been tiptoeing towards a full cosmic adventure with Thor, The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World, Feige says Guardians is unique because while the hero Star-Lord is human and from Earth, hopefully the audience can relate to the adventures that he goes on as they see it through his eyes.”

Additionally, SFX Mag' also caught up with Jonathan Schwartz, who was a Marvel assistant before becoming a production executive, but he's now an associate producer on Guardians of the Galaxy. “When James Gunn came aboard he brought a completely unique visual sensibility to it, harkening back to pulpy '50s science fiction,” he recalls. “One of the things that he mentioned in his original pitch was that science fiction as we understand it has become greyer and sleeker and blacker and darker, this kind of Blade Runner world. We all love Blade Runner but that's not all that science fiction can be, so the world that you're going to see in Guardians of the Galaxy is colorful and bright and pulpy, but it's also lived-in and grounded. And finding the balance between those two things is what's driving a lot of this universe.” What do you think?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

Sounds good to me! Never got it when people said about how no one knew the Guardians...not every film has to be based on an already well known property

Excited for this, can't wait for the first footage

I actually loved the Collector, like I said this movie is going to be good to us CBM fans, as far as the general public well that is the big question!
soforizo - 1/9/2014, 9:20 AM
I still need to see a trailer to have a better idea what to think of this, ideally 2 trailers. The one floating on the internet while cool, felt like a montage. Right now I don't know what to make of this project.
DeadpoolMikeyXD - 1/9/2014, 9:21 AM
Honestly, I had no idea who the Guardians were until after they announced the film and I looked it up on Wikipedia.
I don't care if it's a property I'm not familiar with. After what I read on Wikipedia and the cameos I've seen on EMH and Ultimate Spiderman, I'm sold.
Marvel has YET to fully let me down as far as feature films. I will be there to see it ;-)
GinjaNinja - 1/9/2014, 9:21 AM
goin be goooood
Nomis - 1/9/2014, 9:22 AM
I don't care enough for this version for the GOTG to even get worked up that it's going to be a colorful, bright and pulpy comedy movie.

They got a freaking talking Raccoon with a gun in it, so I know DISNEY had their had hands to get this out before more established and "dark and gritty" heroes like Sub Mariner or Black Panther.

Eventually Marvel will be putting nipples on their heroes costumes.
ezio619 - 1/9/2014, 9:23 AM
Joemomma-yeah man hopefully the public embraces it well,i think it will be like the first iron man in that its by marvel ,w hy not check it out an people were like thats a great movie, and word of mouth caught on but i think the marvel brandname will be enough for people to give it a chance but it will sustain on if its a good movie which i hope it is!!, alos when i see your icon, i expect to hear the music behind and someone saying" ARROOOWWW" haha,
ezio619 - 1/9/2014, 9:24 AM
nomis-umm, i dont think they have namor and this guardians team is anything but for kids, the raccoon is a guy u dont want to mess with
JoeMomma29 - 1/9/2014, 9:24 AM
@ Nomis

You make some valid points there, the only downfall I see for Marvel Studios in the future is Disney. We all know how Disney likes to market their movies by incorporating them to that famous Magical Place that is family friendly.
NovaCorpsFan - 1/9/2014, 9:24 AM
Don't... diss... Tanaleer...
NovaCorpsFan - 1/9/2014, 9:25 AM
You'll make my avi angry... you won't like my avi when it's angry... I swear I'll bring him back...
ezio619 - 1/9/2014, 9:25 AM
nomis- yeah their movies are more family friendly,if kids see these movies and i like the characters they will become fans as will and the mvies will keep on coming plus james gunn has emphasized that it has a lot of drama that might surprise people
DrDoom - 1/9/2014, 9:26 AM
Every time Marvel does interviews about this movie I feel like

Nomis - 1/9/2014, 9:26 AM
And for any of you tweens out there that only got into comic books because of these movies, are wondering what other version of the GOTG I was talking about, THIS is the GOTG back in the day...

Would've been a hell of a movie!

I'm sixteen and I read original Guardians before this new team existed. I prefer them, but the new teamare still freakin' awesome.
Opticblast - 1/9/2014, 9:31 AM
This version of the GOTG is new to me as well. I stopped reading comics in the early 90s. Back then it was the Infinity Watch with Adam Warlock, Gamora, Pip The Troll and Drax (who was like a really dumb Hulk). I'm going into this with a completely open mind though and no real expectations other than to be entertained.
Amazing512 - 1/9/2014, 9:31 AM
@Nomis You're such a terrible excuse for a fan. Do the comic book world a favor and go run with scissors.
Nomis - 1/9/2014, 9:33 AM
@ ezio619 - And I understand that the bottom line is having a successful franchise that keep the cash cow fed and the money coming in so you can make more movies, believe me I know Marvel/Disney is a business first!

But shouldn't they at least have some inkling of trying to raise the bar on these movies so that the comic book movie genre don't go back or get stuck with the "kiddie films' label????

The gerne in recent years have came out of that cloud that was over it for so many years of being Science Fiction version of a "red headed stepbrother" type of movies, to having Oscar worthy performances and subject matter that is more adult oriented.

Why go back after conquering that negative stigma?
cipher - 1/9/2014, 9:34 AM
Nova- Please don't bring the avi back. I'm begging you, mate.. I can't bear it any longer. I felt like he knew about every sin I've ever committed.

Mercy.

I've started collecting Infinity Watch, freakin' awesome stuff.
