Robert Redford Explains More Of What Attracted Him To CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Beyond trying something new, Robert Redford says he's playing the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Captain America sequel because of the high-tech nature of it and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general.

Academy Award-winning actor, filmmaker, and philanthropist Robert Redford sat down recently with Entertainment Weekly at the Sundance Film Festival, which he founded 30 years ago, and discussed his many upcoming projects. With his role as the Head of S.H.I.E.L.D., Alexander Pierce, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier the first venture on his plate, Redford addressed once again why he joined the upcoming Marvel sequel. “One of the reasons that I did it was I wanted to experience this new form of filmmaking that’s taken over where you have kind of cartoon characters brought to life through high technology,” he says. “The Avengers series is a product of high technology playing a major role in the new order of filmmaking so I wanted to experience that—I just wanted to know what that was like and I had that opportunity, so for me it was like stepping into new terrain just to experience what it was like.” What do you think?

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014.

TheAbaryMan369 - 1/25/2014, 6:10 PM
Redford is probably just a normal SHIELD agent. Or maybe HE IS THE REAL MANDARIN
HypeMusheen - 1/25/2014, 6:12 PM
"where you have kind of cartoon characters brought to life through high technology," the man understands exactly what he's doing.

SuperCat - 1/25/2014, 6:21 PM
If Jackson wasn't cast already, he would have made a great Nick Fury.

Great. He is a [frick]ing legend and a great actor. I don't care why he decided to come on board. Redford always gives it his all.
GodzillaKart - 1/25/2014, 6:28 PM

Who cares what attracted him to it? It's Robert Effin' Redford, and he's in the new Cap flick! What more need be said?
ManCalledSting - 1/25/2014, 6:35 PM

BackwardGalaxy - 1/25/2014, 6:36 PM
Roughly translated to "The Avengers made a lot of money and I wanted some of that".
ds9epicfan - 1/25/2014, 6:36 PM
He's a class act and a legend, his presence in the movie only adds more excitement to what is already a highly anticipated movie!
JediSuperGuy83 - 1/25/2014, 6:37 PM
I have a feeling Pierces teams is going to have tension with Furys Team(Cap,Hill,Falcon,Widow) The Winter Soldier just exposes the corruption as S.H.I.E.L.D as A Wild Card
ezio619 - 1/25/2014, 6:41 PM
Superguy-Cap looks great but i think Guardians is gonna surprise people in a good way, maybe im being an optimist, the movie can go either way but i have this gut feeling that people are gonna be quite surprised with that movie
NoPhucksGiven - 1/25/2014, 6:41 PM
I hope his character has a twist and turns out to be the red skull. That would be awesome.
JediSuperGuy83 - 1/25/2014, 6:43 PM
@Ezio Im excited for Guardians as well But Cap is my man in Both Comics,Tv and Film for Marvel that is

Im More excited to see The Lovely Karen Gillans Nebula ive been a fan her since Doctor Who She played my all time companion Amy Pond
JediSuperGuy83 - 1/25/2014, 6:44 PM
@NoPhucksGiven SHIELD is corrupted Nonetheless The Avengers & AOS hinted at that
GodzillaKart - 1/25/2014, 6:45 PM
@BackwardGalaxy: "Roughly translated to "The Avengers made a lot of money and I wanted some of that".

You, are a God damn idiot. Look in the mirror, say the word "idiot" and forever lock the two together.

Redford is one of the greatest (and richest) actors of all time. He doesn't care about that shit.
ezio619 - 1/25/2014, 6:46 PM
I Know everyone wants Him to be The red skull but i think that he is Aleksander Lukin who technically was The Red skull in the story but going with the political thriller tone for this movie,i think he is Lukin who was put in American Politics as an agent for the Soviets, but the cold war ended, he is still pissed and is causing some shit with the Winter Soldier
ezio619 - 1/25/2014, 6:47 PM
Superguy-U LOVE DOCTOR WHO !!( bro fist) i love doctor who too, i started watching with the Matt smith doctor,i went back and watched eccleston and Tennant,i love all The Doctors but Smith is My favorite,im Looking forward to Capaldi and amy and rory were my favorite companions

@BackwardGalaxy- "Roughly translated to "The Avengers made a lot of money and I wanted some of that".

ezio619 - 1/25/2014, 6:50 PM
Superguy- I love Cap too love his morals, his values, just great, he is out of the the team in the movies, my favorite avenger, guardians just seems different, fresh and more exciting too me
JediSuperGuy83 - 1/25/2014, 6:50 PM
@Ezio Smith is Mine too
GliderMan - 1/25/2014, 6:52 PM
If he's not Red Skull, FML. Clearly Red Skull is not dead, and you don't want to wait 5+ years for Cap 3 because the Red Skull will be mostly forgotten by then to the GA.. he's not one of those villains that really sticks out
batz11 - 1/25/2014, 6:54 PM
Still one of my favorite movies of his was Spygame, if Cap is 'anything' like that, I will be very happy!...
JediSuperGuy83 - 1/25/2014, 6:56 PM
And The Sequel is set at Grand zero New York and DC
GliderMan - 1/25/2014, 6:56 PM
Also.. Rhodey cameo!
