Well this is interesting. Heroic Hollywood are reporting that Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm have found their director for Star Wars: Episode IX. Apparently they have tapped Colin Trevorrow for the task, after he steered Jurassic World to $1.4 billion (and counting) at the global box office this year. According to El Mayimbe, Lucasfilm are set to officially unveil the director at the Star Wars panel at SDCC later today - so we'll be able to get some closure on this rumor fairly quickly.

Given the immense financial success of Trevorrow's last movie, this report does have some weight behind it when you add in the fact that he was considered to direct Star Wars: Episode VII - before JJ Abrams got the gig. Trevorrow would join Abrams, Rian Johnson (Star Wars: Episode VIII), Gareth Edwards (Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One), Phil Lord & Chris Miller (Untitled Han Solo Spin-Off) on Lucasfilm's impressive roster of directors working on their Star Wars expanded universe.

No other details have been released at this time. How do you feel about this news? Are you excited to see Trevorrow helm another huge sci-fi blockbuster? We won't have to wait too long to find out if it's true, so check back later today for more news as this story unfolds!

And once again, box office success trumps discernible talent.
This guy is not a good choice for SW, he is mediocre at best. Jurassic World would still be hit with basically any director.

I think its a bad idea to have a different director for each episode. Maybe for those gratuitous spin-offs. But not the main storyline of the saga.

This has just reminded me that Rian Johnson is doing Episode VIII instead of JJ, and now I'm sad :(

Maybe he was giving us a hint when he said he wouldn't direct the Jurassic sequel, Trevorrow said:

“Jurassic Park is like Star Wars, different directors can give a different taste to each movie. I would be involved in some way, but not as director.”

Good god, Trevorrow's Jurasic-shite was absolute ass. Worst movie i've seen since Jurassic Park 3. I don't care how much money it made, so many great ideas where established and were reducing to absolute stupidity, that ending was one of the worst i've seen. The only reason why I sat through the whole thing was because the tickets cost $29 @ imax. Now their going to set him loose on Star Wars? great!! It really is about the money isn't it!

Cheers to @Brainiac13 for the nod :)

I can't guarantee this will stay up (or that it's even true), but if El Mayimbe is willing to put his neck on the line for a rumor that we'll learn the truth about later today, I felt he must have something that's got him so confident.

I didn't care for Jurassic World so can't say if this is a good thing or not. i'll have to check out his other film(s). I just hope studios don't start picking up flavour of the month directors to handle massive franchises.

@FrozenDiamondz- Whedon has said many a time how he plans to just sleep after Age of Ultron and that he wants to create something original and his own thing after just doing adaptations of other properties (The Avengers/ Age of Ultron, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Much Ado About Nothing). He's probably been offered a bunch of stuff but I reckon for the moment he's just taking a little time out.

@NeoBaggins They did that with the original trilogy and that turned out fine.

He's not the reason why Jurassic World is so popular.
It's a well known, hugely popular brand.
It would've been successful regardless.

i will defend this choice. Good eye and know how to create some really neat action scenes. Also kudos for the guys who helped him choose location for JW.

The problem with JW was the script. Last act wasn't all that good and the villains were corny.

Hell, i'm not even the SW fan but i do approve Colin.

@ExSOLDIER I agree totally. Its an average movie at best. I would prefer a different director for Star Wars.

@spidey1994

True. But I think most of today's directors are very distinct in style and have more specific stamps. You can see the directors style in a movie and STAR WARS is very specific place with a particular feel to it. That's why you hear things like "Guardians is a James Gunn film" and "Iron Man 3 is a Shane Black film". STAR WARS has to be a STAR WARS film and I think Abrams gets that. A JJ trilogy seems more consistent than having different directors follow up. Not ruling out a positive situation like Lucus to Kirshner, but I can only see that if its another old school director that knows the feel, like Joe Johnston.

When I see that Rogue One army its undeniably badass. But its also like looking at a cut-scene from a new STAR WARS game. The new stuff is awesome, does it really feel like STAR WARS when you see it? hhhmm I need to see more.

Look at TERMINATOR. The last three films are drastically different in feel. That's how I'm imagining the STAR WARS films all over the place.

Also, ROTJ cinematography does look and feel different from ESB.

Ugh, Jurassic World wasn't even that good.
If you're gonna hire somebody because his movie (a beloved franchise) brought in a billion bucks, why hasn't Michael Bay gotten a call?

For those bemoaning different directors - you know what had different directors for each film? The original trilogy. You know what had the same director? The prequels.
