After a "monstrous" opening (the largest of 2014 thus far), Deadline is reporting Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are developing a sequel to the blockbuster that is Godzilla.

After opening to $103M internationally — the biggest opening of 2014 so far — and grossing $93M domestic stateside this weekend, it should come as no surprise that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.‘ are already developing a sequel to the monster hit. It was confirmed to Deadline this morning that a Godzilla sequel is underway. The beast is currently stomping across international markets to take No. 1 spots in most territories.

Not much is known at the moment (obviously), but it should be a safe bet Gareth Edwards will return to direct. What are your thoughts on a sequel? Sound off below!

Gareth Edwards directs “Godzilla,” which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass”), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient,” “Cosmopolis”), and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck.,” “The Bourne Legacy”) and Bryan Cranston (“Argo,” TV’s “Breaking Bad”).

Great find BlackJack.......I really excited to see if they will feature any of the classic monster for Godzilla to fight.

AlexanderLykins - 5/18/2014, 11:50 AM
Godzilla vs. Gigan. Save King Ghidorah for the third movie!
SoFresh - 5/18/2014, 11:50 AM
Just an incredible experience it was, it´s been a long time since I´ve caught myself physically cheering for a character.
aXe - 5/18/2014, 11:50 AM
I just want a bit more godzilla this time, since we got his introduction out the way, I think it's safe to say we'll get summore godzilla in the sequel
SuperiorMrGod - 5/18/2014, 11:51 AM

That song was a blatant rip-off of Brave by Sarah Bareilis.
charlie2094 - 5/18/2014, 11:56 AM
Just saw this on Deadline, great stuff!

Really really enjoyed the film , glad it's getting a sequel. Just hope they improve in the areas that need improving (very bland human cast besides Cranston, very little Godzilla).

Another franchise to look forward to :D
DrunkenNukem - 5/18/2014, 11:57 AM
Amazing...the sounds and special effects are incredible...

I love it
charlie2094 - 5/18/2014, 11:58 AM

I don't know much about Godzilla or any other Kaiju/monsters, but I do remember seeing an easter egg for "Mothra", so that could be where the sequel goes, whatever that is :P
DEVLIN712 - 5/18/2014, 11:58 AM
Wasn't incredibly impressed by Godzilla but it wasn't the worst film I've seen this year, I'll definitely give the sequel a try
ndwwrestler2 - 5/18/2014, 11:59 AM
It could've been more in my opinion, but it was a really good movie, and definitely worthy of a sequel.

YESSSSS movie of the year bitches!!!!
SauronsBANE - 5/18/2014, 12:04 PM
Solid movie, I really really enjoyed it. But I actually don't want a sequel to this at all. Are the sequels just going to be more kaiju coming out of nowhere and attacking cities, forcing Godzilla to save our butts again and again? I feel like this movie is better served as a standalone movie. No need for any more sequels to water it down.

But realistically I the studio would never just sit on a money-making franchise like this and not make sequels. Unfortunate, but inevitable.
batz11 - 5/18/2014, 12:04 PM
Just left the theater and I'm hugely disappointed, what a pile of crap...
WinterAvenger - 5/18/2014, 12:06 PM
YESSSSSS YESSS PLEASE YESSS this film was amazing in each in every way just like in the originals perfect :D
MrCBM56 - 5/18/2014, 12:06 PM
Such a disappointing movie.

What Batz11 & SauronBANE1 said.
Klone - 5/18/2014, 12:08 PM
Did the film even explain why Godzilla saved humanity? And what the hell are the MUTOs?
JakeMurdock89 - 5/18/2014, 12:08 PM
MexicanSuperman - 5/18/2014, 12:10 PM
@SauronsBANE1, well that is what Godzilla is about.
@Iceman, it wasn't boring. Your simple mind needs explosions every five minutes to keep your short intention entertained?
Klone - 5/18/2014, 12:10 PM

@Axe, Joe
MexicanSuperman - 5/18/2014, 12:11 PM
I thought the movie was awesome. Some parts reminded me of the first Jurassic Park film.
TheManFromMars - 5/18/2014, 12:11 PM
Is he gonna fight Bullshito like @driver said on that other article?
Klone - 5/18/2014, 12:11 PM
I [frick]ing hate those condescending pricks who sneeringly say with such smugness that another person is a lower life form who must require lowly levels of entertainment for simply finding something boring they didn't.

"bbaaraaahh cause urs stewpid u need explosions every 2 secs 2 keep u entetortened brwwyhhahah"
Klone - 5/18/2014, 12:12 PM
I will kill you BlackJack.
MexicanSuperman - 5/18/2014, 12:12 PM
@MetahumanAbominationKlone, watch it and find out.
@Batz, how so?
Ramiel - 5/18/2014, 12:13 PM
Didn't Legendary and WB end their relationship?
JDUKE25 - 5/18/2014, 12:13 PM
Watched it yesterday. It was pretty good.

Slow at times, but the final fight and the way it ended was awesome. It got claps in the theater.

quas666 - 5/18/2014, 12:14 PM
It wasn't a pile of shit but it wasn't magnificent. I wish the story stuck more with cranston than his shitty son. Shitty "MUTOS". Should have been Rodan.
MexicanSuperman - 5/18/2014, 12:15 PM
@MetahumanAbominationKlone, you must get your feelings hurt easily. Stop being so sensitive.
Klone - 5/18/2014, 12:15 PM
I'd ask you to fortify your "house" BlackJack, but there isn't really much point.

Klone - 5/18/2014, 12:16 PM

No, it only annoys me when people assume that.
quas666 - 5/18/2014, 12:16 PM
I give it a 6.5 or 7/10

Was enjoyable but had tons more potential. That ending fight was great.
Chcl - 5/18/2014, 12:17 PM

I love the movie!
SauronsBANE - 5/18/2014, 12:17 PM
@TheMexicanSuperman, True, that IS what Godzilla is about...and that's exactly what we saw with this movie. Isn't that enough? Do you want 2 or 3 more sequels that are exactly the same? Or only very vaguely different (i.e. different kaiju, different humans, different cities getting destroyed)? Leave that kind of brainless redundancy to movies like Transformers.
