Despite facing competition from Rock of Ages ($15M) and Adam Sandler comedy That's My Boy ($13M), Madagascar 3 and Ridley Scott's Prometheus retained their spots from last weekend, grossing an estimated $35M and $20.2M respectively. Prometheus has now grossed an estimated $88.8M domestically despite falling around 60% since last weekend. Prometheus isn't doing nearly as well as i thought it would.
And The Avengers are still going strong which is good to see.
:)
SUPERMAN2013 - 6/17/2012, 8:26 AM
The most over-rated and stupidly anticipated film of the year
kevberg - 6/17/2012, 8:41 AM
wha? Dark Knight?
hope420 - 6/17/2012, 8:50 AM
Ahhh Prometheus. The movie that asked a lot of questions and didn't answer any of em. It was still a fun movie.
batmanmovie2012 - 6/17/2012, 8:52 AM
@DoubleD Even though it is near it's adjusted total there are still 3D ticket prices so TDK's attendance is slightly more. Though Avengers might be more attended in the end it won't be out of the water. Plus I'm going to say end of month until 600 million
prettynuclear2 - 6/17/2012, 9:13 AM
How do you get lost in a spaceship if it's just a large circle?
Nubase - 6/17/2012, 9:20 AM
the whole crew of avengers was pretty stupis, in fact the whole movie was stupid, nick fury should have called Optimus Prime and his crew to take on loki!

Why are you even comparing Prometheus to Avengers is beyond me, Avengers should be compared to The incredibles or kung fu panda, its in the same ball park.
Action - 6/17/2012, 9:24 AM
Prometheus is a movie to be rented on dvd. I spent money seeing this film in Imax. I will never see another film in the theaters without seeing the reviews first.
BrickWall - 6/17/2012, 9:25 AM
Still don't get why people on this site get so hyped about how much these films make.

Counting the money on a daily basis as though they themselves are making a return on the film.
TheMyth - 6/17/2012, 9:29 AM
prettynuclear2, lol that is terrible reasoning...

I'm still gonna see it, [frick]ers!

MadTitan - 6/17/2012, 9:43 AM
i was actually looking forward to this film but guess whose still the boss:

TheMyth - 6/17/2012, 9:56 AM
Brickwall, It varies from person to person, some more trivial and others for harmless curiosity as they're #'s for the very movies we follow on this site. What makes the #'s important is that they dictate the future of a franchise or even an entire genre. Prometheus is a case of the latter and its success could've revitalized true sci-fi, or so we all thought. Imagine if Avengers had failed. Whether you personally enjoyed it or not doesn't matter, but if it had failed to make money the entire MCU would collapse and all of its future potential. DC/WB are skittish enough and the success of Avengers has made a unified DCCU with a JL a very awesome and very real possibility. It's been speculated that MoS might be kicking that off and all this CBM success can only bolster their confidence in such a thing. Imagine if TDKR fails to make money(lol I know but play along), Marvel will dominate live action unchallenged with sporadic interruptions.
I may not be getting a slice of the profit, but I like to see that I will be getting more CBM's. Sorry if you can't appreciate at least that aspect of it.

MadTitan - 6/17/2012, 10:03 AM
enough with the avengers, please

can't stop it, lol
Ranger14 - 6/17/2012, 10:03 AM
"I love people always turn articles that have nothing to do with the avengers into talking about the avengers."

Did you read the article and article description? I suggest you do so again.

Avengers will become the all-time box office adjusted top grossing comic book hero film this week. :-)
dellamorte1872 - 6/17/2012, 10:11 AM
60% decline...it'll keep fallinbg too im sure as word of mouth spreads; it's horrible!
thewonderer - 6/17/2012, 10:13 AM
Woah, even with Prometheus' okay reception, I'm shocked it didn't do better. I thought the Alien legacy would definitely bring it way higher.

Also, enough with the bashing of other films IN TERMS of box office records. In that case, Avatar is the best movie of all time.

All films have their advantages and disadvantages of reaching box office numbers.
dellamorte1872 - 6/17/2012, 10:16 AM
THEY kept arguing it wasnt ALIEN like when they msde it they marketed it wrong if they wanted that result
MadTitan - 6/17/2012, 10:18 AM
no more avengers

on second thoughts

winning big! lol
dellamorte1872 - 6/17/2012, 10:18 AM
if they wanted help from that LEGACY they came at it COMPLETELY wrong!
thewonderer - 6/17/2012, 10:19 AM
@dellamorte

Wow if thats the case, this is the biggest case of irony I've ever seen.
Darkhawk8 - 6/17/2012, 10:21 AM
Come on 600 million!!!
dellamorte1872 - 6/17/2012, 10:21 AM
i know its bad marketing dude, remember "it became its own thing" it stopped being a prequel it had only its DNA that turned people off i bet, plus as i said shitty word of mouth. we prolly wont get a sequel. which is ok with me honestly; i wouldnt pay to see it
Gerrit - 6/17/2012, 10:48 AM
I loved Prometheus. Most, if not all, of the complaints that I've read so far don't stack up. Some people want the movie to do all the thinking for them. And the second Avengers gif MadTian posted is f#cking hilarious!

check by yourself which movies were released during the first 7 weeks of the Tdk run :-):-):-) and judge objectively
Godzillafart - 6/17/2012, 11:04 AM
Prometheus was written by someone with zero understanding of genetics and evolution. Terrible wasted opportunity.
dellamorte1872 - 6/17/2012, 11:06 AM

BrickWall - 6/17/2012, 11:12 AM
@TheMyth lots of comic book movies have failed finacially and they have not harmed the possibilities of studios making further films.

Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Green Lantern, and both Ghost Rider films were all crap movies and flopped box office wise.

There are probably other comic book movies that also failed that I can't think of right now.

I'm more interested in watching good films than watching these studios get rich.
carrowsboy - 6/17/2012, 11:17 AM
Batman Forever flopped? It was the #1 movie of 1995.
MoonDoggyX - 6/17/2012, 11:18 AM
I think that word of mouth is definitely killing Prometheus. Several people that i work with waitto hear what I think of most sci-fi/comic book movies before they spend money on it.

And though I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy myself in this film a little, the lasting effect it left was disappointment. I'd be hard pressed to recommend this movie to someone...
BrickWall - 6/17/2012, 11:25 AM
@Carrowsboy actually it was Toy Story.

$100 million budget, $300 million return obviously I am basing this in regards to the return we see for comic book movies today.

BrickWall - 6/17/2012, 11:28 AM
Plus 1989 Batman made a $100 million more.
Bobevanz - 6/17/2012, 12:05 PM
Aside from damon lindelof being a primo doucher making nonsense of this damn movie. Ridley deserves better, on a side note... WHERES THAT AVENGERS DIRECTORS CUT? Re-releasing will guarantee, guarantee the number 2 spot. Maybe those blue bastards might finally be slain, by the almighty avengers!!
NOLANITE - 6/17/2012, 12:12 PM
The Avengers equals epic fail.
Small scale indoor shooting flick that
Goes good with popcorn.

Very respectfully
NOLANITE.

P.S
I saw Prometheus in IMAX and I thought
It was pretty good. Its a thinking man's
Movie so if you didn't get it then..
You don't think much!

The Avengers is probably the greatest movie ever,I´m a huge Batman fan and I got to admith The Dark Knight has to deal with the second place.
@Mad Titan - MORE AVENGERS!!!!!!!!
@Nolanite - The Avengers equals epic EPICNESS, and I don´t even know if that word exists.

AVENGERS FOREVER!!
Ranger14 - 6/17/2012, 12:26 PM
"The Avengers equals epic fail"

Yes, because it is as critically acclaimed as TDK and will pass it in overall all-time adjusted box office already this coming week. Such an epic fail. And that is not a diss toward TDK. Just the facts to keep things in perspective for a Nolan fan. TDK was far from a failure as far as a film goes.

More like an epic troll fail here.

Very Respectfully,

Comic Book Movie fan
Coloso - 6/17/2012, 12:47 PM
@NOLANITE the only disappointment around here is you. After all the sh*t talking you did about Avengers, you disappeared instead of taking your *ss whooping. Only now do you have the balls to show yourself around here, stay classy ;p

@batmanmovie2012 TDK vs Avengers ticket sales has long been debunked by many on this site. Avengers sold more tickets its opening weekend than TDK regardless how much they were selling for. Let me repeat that -AVENGERS SOLD MORE TICKETS OPENING WEEKEND- than TDK. And when its run is done at the box-office it will clearly beat it in overall ticket sales if it hasn't already. No cheating, no un-adjusted 2012 vs 2008 money figures, no higher 2D & 3D ticket prices, no Obi-wan Kinobi Jedi mind tricks just pure ticket sales numbers 'mano-a-mano. Your welcome ;D
Ranger14 - 6/17/2012, 1:22 PM
Coloso@

It is less than $2 million away in adjusted gross, which accounts for year of release, 3-D, etc. So by the end of the week there is no more arguing or rationalizing that can be done.
MisterFixit - 6/17/2012, 2:44 PM
@maximus Are you saying that "Mamma mia!", "space chimps", "step brother", "x files 2", "the mummy 3", "pineapple express", "sisterhood of the traveling pants" and "tropic thunder" provide the same competition than "dark shadows", "the dictator", "battleship", "man in black 3", Snow White and the Huntsman", "prometheus" and "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most
Wanted?"
timepuzzler - 6/17/2012, 3:06 PM
Least favorite forum post of the day?

"if your not that stupid the film was pretty clear.."
--a site member denigrating the intelligence of other members who express disdain regarding the confusing plot holes in the film Prometheus.

1. Sentences begin with capitalized words.
2. The use of "your", not "you're" is telling.
3. Commas are handy for breaking up a sentence, creating a pause in the reader's mind.
4. Ellipses are comprised of three periods [...], not two[..].

"[I]f your (sic) not that stupid[,] the film was pretty clear..[.]"
Durf - 6/17/2012, 3:29 PM
Wow, I guess word of mouth is not helping Prometheus. Kinda failing there.

Good to see Avengers still going strong though. In a matter of a day or two, the Nolanites will have to shut up about adjusted grosses because The Avengers will pass TDK in that too. Adjusted gross is a stupid argument anyways. Once again, not hating on Batman or Nolan(love both). Just tired of hearing all the Nolanites babble about adjusted gross and whining about it. The Avengers beat TDK financially, deal with it! They are both still great movies, so stop whining!

@timepuzzler: lol, epic ownage!
Durf - 6/17/2012, 4:02 PM
@Maximus: you missed the point of my post then. There a lot of people on here who constantly bring up adjusted grosses and what not to bring down The Avengers success in some way. Well, they can't do that anymore.

Also, yes there are those that seem to whine and bitch constantly because The Avengers beat there precious TDK. Bitching about it does no good. Nor does it change the fact that both TDK and The Avengers are great. Not bashing TDK or Nolan in anyway, because I like Begins, TDK, and Nolan's movies in general. Just stating my disdain for the [frick]ing whiners and those who constantly suck Nolans cock.

And, yeah 4 years is impressive
Durf - 6/17/2012, 4:03 PM
Also, very excited for TASM and TDKR. I just want great CBMs dammit! lol
Madmex93 - 6/17/2012, 4:12 PM
Prometheus was good, only the ending sucked. It was stupid that they left it on a note of "why did they create us if they wanted to destroy us?". It was pretty obvious that the engineers created a weaker species for the sole purpose of testing their biological weapon, the set up for a sequel was stupid.
Durf - 6/17/2012, 4:16 PM
@Maximus: Ok. I see what you are saying about movies not holding records forever. Totally agree, especially with rising ticket prices(well rising prices account for the money part anyway). Glad you aren't like those people I mentioned. lol

And 700 movies? DAMN!!! I have a lot of movies, but not 700. Impressive collection my friend.

timepuzzler - 6/17/2012, 4:44 PM
!!!

Maximus101 just admitted that he likes The Avengers?

Could the world be changing for the better?

Are his Avengers trolling days behind him?

Is the nerd singularity nearly here?

Will I let him kiss my girlfriend?
"You don't have a girlfriend, timepuzzler."
Oh yeah? Then who is this?
"That's your hand."
ONE IN THE SAME!
timepuzzler - 6/17/2012, 4:51 PM
@durf

As always, you present a heapin', helpin' of epicness.

Durf - 6/17/2012, 4:56 PM
@timepuzzler: lol

And stop, you are making me blush... lol
