The film has many returning actors and characters, along with new characters from the video game not featured in the films. The film is preceded by Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) and Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010). It is the second film in the series to be filmed in 3D. The film will take plot elements from the fourth video game.
