I am a huge fan of the Universal Monsters movies and I went to see this movie with high expectations but sadly, I came out of the theater dissapointed.

The effects and transformation scenes were done well I thought. There is also tons of blood and gore in this movie also. The wolfman did look a little odd to me though for some reason. Joe Johnston did the action scenes very well also and I thought the killing sprees in London were also good.

The story is basically the same as the original movie, with a few new twists and turns. I won't say them here, since I don't want to spoil it for you.

Now as for the actors, they basically sucked in this movie. Del Toro just didn't act that good for some reason. Blunt's performance was OK, nothing really special. Hugo Weaving and Anthony Hopkins delivered decent performances.

And what do I think about how Joe Johnston did? All I can say is, Marvel, please get this guy away from Captain America and don't let him direct it! He's good with action scenes but he sucks with developing characters. Hopefully Marvel will realize this and get Johnston the hell away from Captain America, before it's to late!

So overall, The Wolfman is a decent movie but don't go in expecting to see a Oscar-worthy picture.

THE PROSTHETICS WERE PRETTY COOL, HONORING THE ORIGINAL BUT ALSO BEING CURRENT, I LIKE HOW THEY MADE HIS LEGS LUPINE , IN THE ORIGINAL, LON CHANEY DID THE TIP TOE DEAL TO MAKE HIS FEET SEEM LUPINE, ITS COOL THEY TOOK IT A STEP FURTHER IN THIS INCARNATION, THE FAST TAKE DOWNS AND THE DOWN ON ALL FOURS RUNNING WAS PRETTY SICK TOO...

i loved the movie. as for character development...don't blame the director, blame the scriptwriter. why is it the director's fault? he just directs what is given to him. same goes for x-men 3...

I SAW THE BLACK LAGOON CONCEPT DESIGNS, PRETTY SICK, TOO EACH HIS OWN MY FRIEND BUT I THINK COPPOLA'S DRACULA WAS A STAND ALONE MASTERPIECE..THERE'S A MONSTER SQUAD REMAKE?? REALLY?,,,AND JOHNSTON DIDN'T DO BAD AND GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF HIM HAVING LITTLE TIME TO PREPARE FOR IT, I THINK HE DID WELL..

i was pretty surprised with the amount of gore in the film but overall i enjoyed it. there were parts that made me jump and the action scenes were good. i thought hopkins did a good job but i agree del toro was not that great

It's meh. Good action and effects (except the Wolfman looks funny up close), poor character development and failure to connect the audience to the characters emotionally.

Haven't seen Wolfman yet, but to the folks who like Coppola's vampire film, fine. But it sure ain't Bram Stoker's story OR his characters.

@Superdog- I just looked up info on a Monster Squad re-do. Mike Mitchell (directed Duece Bigelow, Male Gigalo, Shrek Forever After & Sky High) is signed to direct. Should start filming later this year. Not sure how I feel about that.

Wolfman, while not a masterpiece, is decent. I think they did a good job of holding on to the feeling of the original, while add some more modern elements to it. Let's face it, the story is not like that of Dracula or Frankenstein. I love the fact that they stuck with a WOLF-MAN and not a wolf!

As for Johnston, he had very little, if any, time to pre-pare for this film. The setting and cinematography was absolutley stunning to look at and I hope he carries that look over to Captain America.

@superdog- agreed. I'd pay money to see an adult version of that kid say "Wolfman doesn't have any nards!"

@ GUNSMITH

I must agree! The transformation in that movie still freaks me out. CGI is great but there is still something about latex and squeeze bulbs that looks more real to me.

ozymandias,

after reading your review, i just don't get it. i (respectively) disagree on virtually all issues.

acting: it was superb in this film. the lines were great. the leads (del toro, hopkins, weaving, blunt) & the supporting roles (from cops to angry villagers) were all terrific.

directing: the pacing was excellent, the shots were awesome, & the special effects were very cool. it moved along nicely towards climax & then resolution.

joe johnston: he totally proved to me that he is the right man for cap, ESPECIALLY since it's a period piece.

perhaps our differences lie in the fact that i'm not as familiar with the classic univeral horror movies. but i was glad to see a horror movie that wasn't another mindless slasher flick. it's the best movie i've seen at the theater since the dark knight. idk, i shared some more thoughts here: http://foxswanderings.blogspot.com/2010/02/thoughts-on-wolfman.html

I loved it! I love the way It honors the original while still being It's own movie.
Coppola's Dracula and American Werewolf in London are Masterpieces!
