Mark Strong Heading to Green Lantern Movie Set

UPDATE: Though his role in John Carter of Mars hasn't wrapped yet, the villainous actor is taking another break to prep for his role as Sinestro.

Production on Martin Campbell's Green Lantern hasn't slowed down since day one. The majority of the film's main cast, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Temuera Morrison, have been spotted filming scenes throughout the New Orleans, LA, area.

A few weeks ago, we learned that veteran comic book movie actor Mark Strong will head to the New Orleans set of Green Lantern this June to begin filming his scenes. Strong has been cast to portray Hal Jordan's Lantern Corps teammate and mentor Sinestro in the comic adaptation.

We also learned Sinestro will indeed have his famous widow’s peak and thin mustache in the film; also, Strong has already been fitted for "special Sinestro contact lenses."

Today, Londan based voice agency Another Tongue, which represents Mark Strong for voice casting, revealed that he will be taking a break from the John Carter set sooner than expected:

"MARK STRONG is heading over to New Orleans this month to do make-up tests for his role in "Green Lantern" as Sinestro."

There has been no word yet from the studio if Strong is the only actor being called down for make-up tests. Temuera Morrison who portrays Abin Sur, the alien predecessor to Hal Jordan, filmed his scene for the movie last month in Madisonville, LA. Hopefully, fans will soon get the information they've been waiting for: final casting decisions for the film's other Lanterns Kilowog, Tomar-Re and Salaak.

UPDATE: In a brief interview with the NY Post, Strong confirmed that Sinestro's costume will be CG as well and his make-up will involve prosthetics.

Regarding his think British accent and whether he would have to mask it for the role, Strong said, "All the Green Lanterns are able to communicate with each other in a common language because of their rings, so it doesn't really matter what accent they use, I talked about it with [director] Martin Campbell, and an English accent suits the character."

I can't wait to see Strong as Sinestro. He will be amazingly awesome.
gtrman - 5/7/2010, 1:25 PM
IM2 Was great. No real issues worth complaining about. I think they still have the magic!

Where Green Lantern is concerned, I am greatly anticipating this film. with the CG ring forms and when they are capable of on film, this can either go really well, or really bad. The first few promo shots of Reynolds in costume will be a big deciding factor for me. That, and what they do with Strong. I still would have preferred to see Hugo Weaving as Sinestro simply for the shape of his head and ability to really piss you off in a movie as a bad guy, but I'll give Strong his moment and judge not until I see the film.

I'm thinking it will go really well, however.

im with Tyler!! I CANT WAIT TO SEE HIM!!!!
JoshWilding - 5/7/2010, 1:35 PM
Damn, now if only this guy would play a Marvel villain! :P Nice find MULTI!
blueorangeny - 5/7/2010, 1:43 PM
First and foremost, great article. I can't wait for GL.

regarding IM2 I'm planning to see it tomorrow. But to be honest I've been reading comments and reviews and so far it's 50/50.

Seeing IM2 tomorrow at 1 PM in NYC...IMAX FTW :)
BigbyBadWolf - 5/7/2010, 2:04 PM
I'm really looking forward to the GL movie too. Mark Strong should rock as Sinistro. He blew me away in Sherlock Holmes so I have high hopes for him in this. Great find, Poni. :)
HelaGood - 5/7/2010, 2:05 PM
i agree with InterestingJohn. i think the only reason poeple are hung up on hugo playing sinestro are his eyebrows
Flurb - 5/7/2010, 2:21 PM
I think they'd both do well as Sinestro, but Mark Strong has been picked and I admire him greatly, I think he will do a brilliant job. Plus, how bad can they really mess up sinestro's makeup? He's a human with red skin, basically.

Also back to the Sinestro thing: Bruce Willis looks like Sinestro, quite a bit in my opinion, but I wouldn't necessarily want him to play him:

Wicked stuff!!
gtrman - 5/7/2010, 2:48 PM
I can't agree with you John. Weaving's head is shaped far more like Sinestro's. Mark Strong's head is anything but slender. In fact, it's more square on the bottom and round on top, whereas Sinestro is drawn (at least as far as that pic you posted goes) with a round chin, no cheekbones, high pointed eyebrows, a large forehead with a widows peak (Stong only has a large forehead due to having shaved his head in that pic), an elongated head...his head is the exact OPPOSITE of Mark Strong. Sinestro is typically drawn as a tall slender person and Weaving is closer to that. Sinestro doesn't have a strong jaw...he's lean-muscle and bony.

weaving

As far as Strong having more of a Sinestro look more than Weaving "ever" did, I don't really thing weaving was ever going for the Sinestro look. I personally feel Hugo Weaving is a far better and more accomplished actor than Strong, and has the ability to blend into character better. I think he makes a far more sinister villain (even over Strong's Blackwell). If I have to I'll photoshop a mustache on Weaving, but I think he's a better fit by far.
Minotauro - 5/7/2010, 2:57 PM
I second that @gtrman.
SUPERBATSPIDERMAN - 5/7/2010, 3:22 PM
Weaving would be a great Sinestro but I think Strong will blow us away sort of like Ledger as Joker I guarantee you that he will be awesome.
KIDDSOUL - 5/7/2010, 3:53 PM
Hugos receding hairline make his head look bigger...sorry Hugo. :(
Nytwng77043 - 5/7/2010, 4:16 PM
Contract is done. 'nuff said. However, it would make a great argument if the sequel pulls a "Rhodey" (i.e., IM2).
TxLantern - 5/7/2010, 4:25 PM
I like Strong as Sinestro myself. He can pull it off without the elongated forehead. He was great in Sherlock Holmes. Im not worried at all.
Phinehas - 5/7/2010, 4:36 PM
InterestingJohn and gtrman

I think Ruffles are far better than Pringles.

Strong will deliver this role because he a superb actor. The subtle differences and similarities to his character's comic counterpart is almost irrelevant at this point. Not merely by the fact that he's been contracted out to do it, but because he CAN do it. And will! Make-up will give him the believability necessary for fans to identify him with the comic counterpart.
TxLantern - 5/7/2010, 4:58 PM
InterestingJohn I completely agree with you on Strong. I do however disagree with you on ruffles vs. Pringles issue. lol
LEEE777 - 5/7/2010, 5:24 PM
WEAVING would own SINESTRO!!!

Though STRONG will too!

BRADLEY COOPER where are you GUY???? : D
Misterfan - 5/7/2010, 5:52 PM
Its been a while, but i'm back. hey i think Weaving looks a lot like Sinestro than strong, plus strong's jawline is too strong like looking. Look at most Sinestro pics, his got a long face like Weaving, anyways weaving would totally own the role, but not too sure on Strong. I really wasn't impressed in S.H
Gotbatman - 5/7/2010, 6:47 PM
can't wait to see pics of this guy as sinestro!

Mark Strong kicks ASS! I loved him in Body of Lies.
rodsvilaca - 5/7/2010, 9:32 PM
I really prefer Jason Isaacs to playing Thaal Sinestro, but Mark Strong is always a good idea to play villains.

I just can't wait to see the movie designs to the Power Batteries:

After Avengers, Batman 3 and Green Lantern I think we might see the Justice League Movie not too far behind....
fanboiii - 5/7/2010, 11:48 PM
^ Hey, why is Batman in the middle!

Strong = Sinestro, Weaving = Red Skull. I'm more than pleased with this casting.
Angelus - 5/8/2010, 7:12 AM
People who say Weaving is more Sinestro must be high or drunk, or something. Strong is SINESTRO!!!!!! THIS IS HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Diodoro - 5/8/2010, 7:23 AM
@Shazam171- love the new photoshoped Supes first time i've seen it done decently-
@Dave- does WW really need a solo movie, or can they pull her in later for the JLA shindig, sort of how they would bring in Hawkeye for Avengers?

It seems to suit her, doesn't it?

Oh i forgot to put up my traditional BRADLEY COOPER pic up! : P

Phinehas - 5/8/2010, 1:22 PM
LEEE777
Cooper could certainly accentuate that paticular boorish aspect to Gardner, but doesn't really enmesh the ponderous jock. But that wouldn't deter me from thinking he'd own the role.
ClaireLannister2016 - 5/8/2010, 4:44 PM
@leee
I bet Batman is secretly enjoying looking at Guy's ass. ;)
odie00 - 5/9/2010, 1:57 AM
haha batman actually smiles and tells kyle to tell guy to shave his ass cause its hairy lol. bradley could so do guy gardner. i cant think of anyone else. i mean if ryan could be hal then someone we know for a fact that can do guys part should get it, guy isnt going to be in the film anyways as far as i know. john stewart is and they have some unknown for him which is cool. hopefully they introduce kyle at some point hes my fave out of the earth lanterns
Angelus - 5/9/2010, 8:36 AM
@ LEEE777 - I gotta admit, Bradley Cooper looks alot like Guy Gardner's butt.
Ranger14 - 5/9/2010, 10:52 AM
Bradley Cooper = Pointy chin
Guy Gardner - Strong square chin

I have always seen Gardner's chin as one of his signature features. That's why I have a challenge with Cooper for the part.
colbatman - 5/9/2010, 12:24 PM
@IntrestingJohn I'm sorry but in the pic you put up Hugo looks much more like Sinestro than Strong. Not saying that strong is or isn't the better actor to play sinestro. Just that in that in that particular comparison your visual aid doesn't mesh with your written argument.
Ranger14 - 5/9/2010, 1:19 PM
colbatman@ I agree 100%. The shape of Hugo's face is much more fitting. Funny how people see things so differently. One thing I do know, that fan poster is a terrible image of Strong as Sinestro.
MONTEZ - 5/9/2010, 3:01 PM
love the fan pic/choice for wonder woman. i am a marvel guy, but a huge batman fan, and loved the justice league cartoon. i really hope to see a jl movie, along with solo ww, flash, true superman films. even an aqua man film would be sick. it's time for dc to put there great characters to use.
MONTEZ - 5/9/2010, 3:07 PM
wow, this is how anal we have gotten about casting? we are comparing heads, wow.
Flurb - 5/9/2010, 3:48 PM
@doughboy I agree, haha.

To be honest, I think looks matter only a little. Especially for Sinestro since he's going to be made up anyway and it will be more on the makeup artists' hands then it is on Strong's genes as far as appearance. However, acting is important, which Strong of course can Deliver.
Joker08 - 5/10/2010, 1:17 AM
Temuera Morrison was spotted filming?? Did I miss something?! Does someone know what Abin Sur will look like? I can't wait! :)

@MPP: I've seen the film twice now - I missed the Namor references! Where are they? This is so exciting! And I also heard about some Black Panther references - can you confirm that? Does this mean Marvel Studios has their rights for film?

Oh - and for the record, I'd be fine with Cooper, but my first choice for Guy Gardner is Steve Zahn.

LEEE777 - 5/10/2010, 12:35 PM
OH GOD,,,, not another RIMMER lover!!!

HELL NO!

BRADLEY COOPER = PERFECT!

GUYS @ Lol! ; D

r0r5ch4ch84 - 5/10/2010, 11:48 PM
Sorry folks, I agree with LEEE.
doctorretroandthepogs - 5/11/2010, 5:45 PM
I'm happy he's using a british accent. That's how I always pictured Sinestro. As long as they don't make Killowog sound French or something crazy, I'm happy with the directors choices thus far.
doctorretroandthepogs - 5/11/2010, 5:49 PM
@ InterestingJohn
I completely agree with you about Renner. He can pull off asshole really well. Watch "The Assasination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford". Great film.
Joker08 - 5/11/2010, 11:12 PM
My reasoning is that not only does Zahn look the part and could pull off the role in general, but I think he'd have great chemistry with Reynolds.
