CNN Talks Comic Book Movies and Green Lantern

Cool video article on CNN I came across about comic book movies and also touched a bit on the Green Lantern movie. The main focus is about how the most successful comic book movies tend to stick to the source material a lot more, therefore having more authenticity. I thought I'd share it with you guys, see it here and tell me what you think...

The bit touched on about The Green Lantern movie in development is, it's being compared to Iron Man in that it's not necessarily a household name, but has huge potential! I think it's a amazing character and in an epic setting with a space opera feel to it could be one of the biggest and best comic book movies ever told on the big screen. I can't wait to see it done right and with the past two attempts of The Dark Knight and Watchmen being near perfect, i see this another gem from Warner Brothers in the making! ; )

LEEE777 - Well i hope you enjoyed the video clip, tell me your thoughts below.

nice find LEEE.
charbelelnasr - 9/15/2009, 8:18 AM
Firsting on your own article, for shame Leee, for shame;) I know most people would've rather seen Ryan Reynolds play the Flash (myself included), but I think Green Lantern is going to be a huge success especially if DC treats this movie like they treated Dark Knight or like Marvel treated Iron Man.
MatchesMalone - 9/15/2009, 8:34 AM
quality video
ItsNotASchooner - 9/15/2009, 8:40 AM

Matches @ Lol, i have no shame, heh heh! ; D

Yeah id rather him WALLY WEST too, but he should make a great HAL (well as long as we don't get loads of One liner REYNOLDS jokes lol), anyway im sue DC with treat GL with respect just like they did the TDK, hopefully this can even be bigger than IRON MAN, ya never know!
LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 8:43 AM
@ LEEE777: Good stuff, bro.

@ MatchesMalone: I think about 99% of this site agrees with you about Ryan Reynolds playing Flash.

Spideyshawn - 9/15/2009, 10:16 AM
Sticking to the source material works better? Novel idea.
Bamf7 - 9/15/2009, 10:17 AM
@spideyshawn, Ha, ha, ha. lol. Kanye would be enough of an asshole to do that...........Again!

@sirprize, He would be enough of an asshole to do that a third time!lol
supermarioworldE - 9/15/2009, 10:17 AM
Me too, Cape. lulz

@ Bamf: yeah right? Still there are many who reject that notion it seems.

Personally I think the winning combination is something like this: keep the powers, the origin, and the personality of the character as much like the book as you possibly can. Then use classic stories as your template for plot points but tweak them whereever needed.
DarthMulder - 9/15/2009, 10:21 AM
@ mulder

i agree with that, but it seems most film makers confuse "tweak" with totally change. in X3, the dark phoenix story was almost unrecognizable, AND it wasn't even the main plot. but yeah, tweaking is a good idea, just no "changing"!
CorndogBurglar - 9/15/2009, 10:37 AM
Spideyshawn, lame.
InFamouslyCool - 9/15/2009, 10:53 AM
Kanye West and Michael Bay should form a tag team called the Douche brothers..they would be unbeaten is the asshole stakes.
Rorschach01 - 9/15/2009, 11:12 AM
I agree with her 100%. Stick to the true comicbook origins and make it a little bit of your own, but not too much! An example of that going too far was Hulk. The origin was nothing like the comics and story was so far out there. I can't wait for Green Lantern and I expect great things to happen from the movie.
airbeyonder18 - 9/15/2009, 11:14 AM
no disrespect to anyone but enough with this ryan reynolds should've been flash! should've, could've would've. he's green lantern so oh well.
droopy1317 - 9/15/2009, 11:14 AM
Sticking to the source material? What does that mean anyway??

There are a ton of incarnations of the same characters in comics.. It's all about being wise enough to be able to translate the most appropriate for the big screen.. And if none of them are suitable, think of something that will work..

If Samuel L. Jackson was cast as Nick Fury 15 years ago??
Imran - 9/15/2009, 11:17 AM
Corndogburgler, very very true. Good point.

And as far as I am concerned, the example you gave is probably the worst example of that that we have.
They could have adapted that story to the scope and budget of the trilogy, but still preserved it's essence.

It would have been tricky and maybe even a little more risky but it could have been done.

DarthMulder - 9/15/2009, 11:20 AM
to be fair tho. TDK wasn't really true to the source? It was Nolans version loosely based on the source material.. i loved it dont get me wrong, but it can be successful and not true to the source. the newer hulk was great, and true but not considered a success, critically, or dollar wise
fotc - 9/15/2009, 11:23 AM
Thanks to those of you who wished me well on the GL military casting call. I just got an email a few minutes ago telling me that I was one of the lucky few selected to audition! Even better, one of my teammates was picked out as well! If we get these parts it would be the second time we both worked as extras in a WB superhero production. HOOAH!
MultiPurposePoni - 9/15/2009, 11:32 AM
@ congrats multipurpose!!!!
CorndogBurglar - 9/15/2009, 11:49 AM
fotc, actually that's true. That's proof that sometimes tweaks work out well and sometimes they don't. I think Nolan knew he had a home run on his hands even if it was a radical take.
So that is one example that we can think of in which a CBM is quite different form the source and yet still quite good.

So obviously it is indeed possible for that to happen, but it's just doesn't happen very much. I am trying to think of another example...

DarthMulder - 9/15/2009, 12:07 PM
FOTC @ Atleast in TDK BATMAN and JOKER wasn't brothers lol!

WOLVERINE only made it becoz, he's like one of the most popular MARVEL charcters, if it was any others that movie would've flopped!

There's sticking to the source and totally bending you over and ramming it up ya a$$! : D

SpideyShawn @ Cheers!
LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 12:30 PM
oi @leee be a gd boy and get me cigs plssssssssss lol

lc - 9/15/2009, 2:07 PM
@Spideyshawn well im not the only one who thought Nicholson was better joker. joker and two face= only good thing about TDK
bleedthefreak16 - 9/15/2009, 2:13 PM
What was wrong with that newscaster? She seemed retarded. They must only use her for late nights or online.
longbowhunter - 9/15/2009, 2:18 PM
good find LEEE but the woman hosting this show is a dumb-ass lol, se obviously knows nothing about comics and did she call Hulk the Hounk??? i'm baffled lol
Ryden - 9/15/2009, 2:38 PM

LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 3:18 PM
hey lee - im new here man - seen couple of your stuff - love wat you do man - but i disagree on ryan being flash - in my opinion - chris evans would be the best flash[wally] - just my opinion lol
samster13 - 9/15/2009, 3:19 PM
I think a good comic movie can stray from the source and yet be true to it. Ironman's origin was modernized and he faced off against Ironmonger earlier than he did in the comics, but it worked. TDK took the general origins of its villains and wrapped them in the Nolanverse Batman. X2 was a twist on God loves, man kills.

I don't think everything has to be verbatim from the source, but keeping a cornel of it makes it ring true somehow. The other secret ingredient is a good cast filled with solid actors, RDJ, Michael Caine, Bale, Oldman, Jackman, Maguire, Norton, Dafoe. You get my drift.

The worst comic movies always seem to have the weakest casts, FF for example four leads; two were awful. An ensemble needs to be filled with actors who actually have chemistry; this group didn't. Miscasting is a killer, McMahon as Doom was absolutely unforgiveable, the man has no charisma... Doom should ooze it.

The real Key too is the supporting cast. If you nail those you nail the movie JK Simmons, Bruce Campbell alone is worth the price of admission to Spidey. The supporting cast needs to ground the movie for the audience, or make them laugh. These are the average Joes who are going to be looking in at all the craziness, they HAVE to be solid.

Direction and vision play into it very heavily too. No vision, no honey. Script too. These have to be people who get the characters and have a real love for them and the type of story they represent. The director needs to match the character and identify with them in some way. Tim Burton directing a Tim Burton style Superman movie is NOT Superman, Paul Verhoven directing Spiderman is not going to feel like Spidey, etc.

nerosday - 9/15/2009, 4:13 PM
SAMSTER @ Cheers and Welcome man! Hope your enjoying it dude!!!

I'd rather have ACKLES over EVANS as FLASH lol, its too much of the same character with different powers, if EVANS did a DC hero it should be a completely different charcter than the TORCH! An man EVANS should not get replaced as THE HUMAN TORCH, [frick] the FF reboot lol.

This is a great WALLY WEST =

Trueblood.

LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 4:17 PM
that is true bout the same character. but i would still like to see him as flash lol and i think Djimon Hounsou would make a perfect "J'onn J'onzz / Martian Manhunter"

samster13 - 9/15/2009, 4:27 PM
Great MANHUNTER! But no to FLASH lol!
LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 4:44 PM
oh got a question - how do you make one of these? lol fanfic things?

and yes on flash lmfao
samster13 - 9/15/2009, 4:46 PM
I'd rather ACKLES as WALLY than EVANS lol!

A lot of hard work, get a photoshop thing an read all the stuff! ; )
LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 4:49 PM
Reynolds would have been playing an extremely similar character to his other movies if he was cast as Flash, but that didn't stop people from wanting him for the role, including you Lee, so that doesn't mean Evans can't be Wally.

Not trying to start a fire, but I just had to point that out.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/15/2009, 4:52 PM
Point taken bud! ; )

But i'd still rather him be HUMAN TORCH than WALLY, anyway, we gotta get passed BARRY first before even thinking about WALLY lol! ; D

Hey where ya been man, mizzed ya lol!
LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 6:57 PM
MULTI good luck man!! ; )
LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 7:21 PM
I've had school and sports practice, so I've been very busy and have had to cut back on my time here.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/15/2009, 7:30 PM
LEEE im ur biggest fan lol nah but seriously great find i love this article or news and i hope green lantern will be bigger than iron man and i think ryan is goin to do hal justice
Punish88r - 9/15/2009, 9:21 PM
Little confused how they could say that staying close to the source material is the most success. Watchmen was probably the most faithful and wasn't a huge success in fact it did very poor. TDK, Iron Man and Spiderman all had a lot of things that were far from close to the source material.
stupify_me - 9/15/2009, 10:24 PM
Ryan Reynolds is going to kill Green Lantern. They better follow it up with a Green Arrow movie.
stephenismyname - 9/16/2009, 12:30 AM
If by kill you mean hurt the movie's overall greatness than I agree. He was a terrible casting choice.
stupify_me - 9/16/2009, 3:01 AM

prototype 3D - 9/16/2009, 6:55 AM
Bottom line @ GUYS! Closer to source, the better the movie!!!

Any true comic book fan would agree, the less HOLLYWOOD has on their own version the better, why mess with great!

Punish88r @ Lol ; D

Cheers!

PROTO @ Very nice!

TYLER @ Didn't know you was still a friggin'school lol!
LEEE777 - 9/16/2009, 8:58 AM
Actually Kanye did do that once before. He lost a VMA to a band called Justice. He went on stage and said "If I don't win MTV loses it's integrity" or something like that.
