Prequel Movie "The Thing" Starts Filming Come March

Production Weekly (via Twitter) is reporting that shooting for the prequel is happening in March. "The Thing" has come a long way since its original movie, it's had many books, comic books. and even video games.

Universal will be developing the sequel/prequel and director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. is to helm the project.

From Twitter:

Universal's prequel to John Carpenter's classic thriller "The Thing," is due to begin filming March and continue till June in Toronto.

The movie plot of this prequel as reported on the web but could change, apparently will focus on the Norwegian camps in the Antarctic that were ravaged by the alien first before the good old USA discovered the decimated camps.

LEEE777 - Sounds cold. Hey let's hope Kurt Russel gets some kinda cameo in this to keep it feeling "The Thing" and keeping a connection to the first one, a sci-fi classic.

The original and remake were truly greats....both.

I would love to see this.

Carpenters version is one of my favorite movies.

Too bad they couldn't get him to do this prequel. I thought he was going to make a sequel, but I haven't heard anything about it in a long time.

@ Macksimus

yeah, Carpenter had a story that would've picked up right after the original, AND would've starred Kurt Russell and Keith David (with built-in explanations for the actors appearing older: severe frostbite from the end of the original). Apparently Universal didn't want to pay him, and since they already own the rights....well, pretty standard Hollywood crappy decision-making there...

They better do this right.

They are on the right track, I'll give them that. I've often thought about a prequel for this set in the Norweigen camp, really the only thing (no pun intended) that would work for me. I thought it would be cool to do the movie half english/half norwegien, maybe have some English speaking investors or some members of the science team. May heighten the craziness to have people jabbering in Norg and English when they can't understand one another, not knowing who to trust. Total chaos thru-out the camp.

Ronald D. Moore is working on the script as I hear it, so that's encouraging news.

Sounds like a good plan! John Carpenter is a great writer, and even director. But, respectfully, I don't think he would handle a big budget film well. I think he would get all 'Lucas'y with it and go overthetop 80s with it. There were a few movies he did that were really cool! The Thing was one of them. Others include but not limited to:
They Live
Escape from New York
Halloween

Except for Halloween, they can all handle some modern updating.

2 things (no pun intended) this movie needs to succeed... 1. John Carpenter 2. NO CGI!!! we need old school animatronics just like the first one, that's what made it truly terrifying

Nellb4Zod-
Two things-
1. Where have I seen that thumbnail of yours before?

2. Too much reliance on one form of FX can be just as detrimental as another. I think all forms should be used! Miniatures, suits, Make-up, animatronics, and CGI for enhancements. Too much of one thing can be equally bad.

Love the original. Back before John Carpenter lost his mind and began making stuff like Ghosts Of Mars.

and classics like Vampires? Terrible.

I always wished for another Big Trouble in Little China...

Probably best that it never came to fruition.

this movie was all about direction. it wasa raw and gritty and still stands up very well today. i hope he uses carpenters simple yet extremely effective score. very moody stuff. carpenter lost his mind on escape from l.a. all the other crap followed. starman and christine also showcase just how awsome carpenter can be. i thought prince of darkness and they live were very enjoyable too.

of course big trouble in little china( tour de force ) and escape from new york are all time cult classics.

Yeah guys, I love all of that old stuff. Even Prince Of Darkness, which was very flawed, but still very creepy in places too. And what can you say about They Live, Big Trouble, Escape From NY and Halloween? It pains me to see what happened to Michael Myers. They should have left it at one movie..thats it.

I can live with the original Halloween II, it wasn't too bad. Rob Zombie should have his DGA card fkn burned. Ohhh well. You know I remember hearing somewhere that Carpenter said there was some connection between The Thing, The Prince of Darkness, and In The Mouth of Madness. Ever heard that before?

I'm not really thrilled about a sequel... The John Carpenter one can not be beat... I'd still probably see it though if the do make a sequel...
gaikinger
gaikinger - 1/5/2010, 8:07 PM
another great carpenter movie ( many will disagree ) was the fog. again a great carpenter score, suspence and all around creepyness. then there was the remake which proved just how out of touch with the source material a different director can get. just an utter piece of garbage. i mean if this is really worth doing...what the f@#%K is carpenter so busy doing that he cant man this thing himself? if it was really worth doing he'd do it right? of course the one sequel he did do was a steaming hunk of poop(escape from l.a.). its a slippery sloap here.

It's part of his Apocalypse Trilogy. Three different movies with three different takes on the end of the world.

Crazy. I just watched this at work last week. Great movie. Have to love those alien/monster movies where the people are "alienated" in some hostile place, forcing them to deal with the creature. Oh, and single creatures I think make a movie more frightening than multiply ones. Much like the first Alien movie. Great stuff. Will be great to see, and maybe learn, more details about the 'wegians finding the crashed ship and how things unfold there.
