SUPERMAN EXCLUSIVE: Joe Kelly on Creating Superman vs. The Elite

Superman vs. The Elite hits stores on June 12th, and throughout the week we'll be presenting our exclusive interview with writer Joey Kelly who discusses the conception of the original story and its adaptation.

The Elite were introduced by Kelly in the pages of Action Comics #775, "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way." In the first part of our exclusive interview with the writer, who adapted the story for the film's screenplay, he reflects on his motivations for the story, how he became involved with writing Superman in the first place and how he came to truly understand the character.

Not the first one. I like that sophistication you mentioned and see how it will mean to me. One's perspective on an issue doesn't always came out parallel to other people's opinion it's just a matter of preference in the end

Good story with great characters but terrible character designs.

@wearethewalkingdead9 - I'll take that as a head's up, LOL. On that note I guess i will reconsider that buying options for now. LOL.

One concern i have though is the character designs, it looks bad but I'm more interested with the story

How the [frick] is the movie long? It's 1 hour and 15 minutes. Deathstrokeslade, check out my review. The movie is great. The animation is the only lackluster thing. The story is [frick]ing amazing. You get to see pissed off Superman...like you've never seen him before.

i have seen it and i like it! the character designs are weak and not my cup of tea but the story is awesome. it warrants a repeat viewing to me.

I like this movie a lot. I wish the art direction was different though. Even though I am on the side of the Elites on the issue they put forth in this movie "Kill em all(bad guys that murder) and let God sort them out".

The did so well with GL First Flight and Batman: Under the Red Hood, this seemed below those. Better than some of the rest and not bad. I wish they could prduce live action as well as the animated films. Marvel is crushing DC in the movie arena, wish they were equal.

If these movies are so 'good' why doesn't DC make theatrical releases? Mask of the Phatasm was it. I'm tired of all the direct-to-dvd stuff. They don't have the courage to do anything else.

@Cheeze187: they have limited budget and I think they are putting most of it in the adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns.

This was one of the only DC ani movies that I've enjoyed. While I agree with GOBSMITH that the ending had issues -- it's a bit Superfriendsy in one particular aspect -- I over thought it was FAR smarter and better animated than nearly all of the other ani films.

As a for instance, JL: Doom had a ton of plot holes and far worse animation than we see here.

And nearly every other DC ani movie is rife with with misogyny and gratuitous violence, in this one, the violence (and I'm OK w/action, I'm just talking unnecessary violence) is PART of the story. Never mind the fact that anytime Superman previously has appeared, they make him out to be a moron (who doesn't know how to use his powers) or a jerk.

This flick had Superman right. I like the designs -- although Lois's design doesn't fit her voice at all (although I like Perrette's perf a lot).

And I liked the ending, save for this one juvenile aspect of it about endangering/not endangering people on the street. * MINOR SPOILER * They change the ending from the comics, and I thought this was a far more Superman-like ending.

What a BORING interview! Almost as long as the DVD itself LOL
